Hey guys. I'm not sure where to put this so i apoligize in advance if this is in the wrong section.
So at the moment I have a galaxy s3 which is good. It runs relatively smoothly and even though it's only 720p, the display is nice too. However my one gripe about the phone would be it's battery life. I can only make it through the day with 3 hours of screen time at 30-40% brightness.
Now the note cause my eye because of its large display and battery. The s-pen seems cool too and i could probably use it to take notes.
I was dead set on the Note 3 but I've read all these troubles Knox brought upon the rooting/dev community. Of course I root my phone to use root apps and I flash ROMs if I'm feeling up to it, but I'd like to keep my warranty if possible while being able to root my device but Knox seems to be a barricade.
So because of this, I'm considering getting the LG G2...
But what I want to know is, despite knox, should i still get the Note 3?

Depending on which note you end up with it might still be possible to have root and keep Knox at 0x0.
Regardless of Knox though, it's an amazing phone and you don't even really need root.

The Note 3 is great. However if I had an S3 and was interested in custom ROMs then I'd wait a little while until things are a little more developed for the Note, the price for it will probably be better by then too.

I'd say get it also, but you're in a Note 3 forum and 99.9% of your replies are gonna have that answer.
As I posted elsewhere It's purely personal preference, depends what you want in/from the phone itself.
As radicalisto said, but I will add it is the most perfect phone, and for once this geek may keep a phone three years! (I'm a yearly changer).
But yep I feel this is the height of technology and I would be envious of it if I had an s3 (also a great phone).

If warranty is really a concern , then go for g2 but let me tell you if you saw someone using note 3 after that, you will regret your choice. Note series has many unique features which are useful in daily life. On note 2, I barely used s pen once a week but with note 3 I am using it daily. Battery life is almost double than s3. Choice is yours.

The only real cons I have for the Note 3 is that there's no rooting available and that the G2's / Nexus 5's screen looks better IMO, at least from when I saw it in the bestbuy store. Battery life is pretty ridiculous for me. My previous phone was a Droid Charge though which lost like 10% per 10 minutes of 4G + browser. I can go a full day before it goes to 15% (by full day I mean 7 AM to 9 PM) with pretty heavy usage.
Get the N9005 version. The support is bigger for it. Like custom roms etc.. check the phone before tripping knox and you will be fine.. (screen, gps etc)
Thanks for the replies!
Right now.. the G2 is $20 with a contract renewal on Sprint.
The Note 3 is $300.. so I'm contemplating on this choice even more now.
Just don't ****ing update to MJ7 (unless it comes with it out of the box).
Excuse my language.

I've used Galaxy Note II for about 6 months and just lost it in a festival last night
So I use my old Galaxy S II for now. Do you guys think it will be worth to buy a Nexus 4. Is it like using an worse phone than ever?
Because the price of a Nexus 4 is much lower than a Note II.
I know that I will lose some advantages of a Note II such as better camera, larger screen, S-Pen and its features (which I hardly use them), better battery life.
I, however, like flashing custom roms and like the speed of AOSP roms which is way smoother than Touchwiz UX in a Note II. And of course the closed-source CPU of a Note II is not much suitable to do it.
So what do you guys think if I buy a Nexus 4 at this time. Or it would be better to wait for the new Nexus device.
Thx
Don't compare the devices based on price
The hardware will last for a long time, and it will keep receiving the latest updates too
I would sell the SII and put the money towards a Nexus 4*. The Nexus 5 (or 4.2 or whatever...) might come out, and you might hate it. It might also cost £600 pay as you go instead of being cheap like the N4
If you must have the new Nexus when it comes out, you can sell the Nexus 4 and put the money towards the new one
*This may be a little bias as I hate Samsung devices, but it doesn't take away from the fact that the Nexus 4 is great, and worth a lot more than £250
I traded my galaxy note 2 for a nexus 4 and haven't looked back. The phone is more smooth and bloat free. It's unlocked and has a better resolution of 320 ppi compared to the note 2s ppi. You get timely updates from Google and the support on this phone is unmatched. The function I miss is the s pen but you'll quickly forget all that when you start using this phone. Now for me I can't see myself using another phone other then the Nexus 4 because it's so fast and buttery smooth.

Have you noticed any lags on Nexus 4?
My old Note II had a little bit lag sometimes when scrolling through home screens or opening/closing the app drawer.
I have the note 1 and the charger port was going bad so I found a sweet deal on craiglist where this guy had just bought a N4 and he was to much an apple fan. So I scooped it up basically brand new for 300. I have had it for a week and I really do love the N4. It is so fast and easy to root. It will be getting updates for a while as well. I was always flashing AOSP roms on my note so why not just have and AOSP phone.
The only con I have found that I am getting over quickly is the screen size. I really did like the larger screen. However the N4 is not exactly a small phone either but compared to the note everything seems small. That is really the only con I have so far.
I think if your into flashing roms or like AOSP then the N4 is a no brainer.
OK. Just knows the smoothness
Let's talk about a problem (high PRS value)
Is it obviously noticeable for daily usage? I read about the problem and it makes me hesitate.

Hi,
As far as N4 is concerned, I want to tell you that I am using this phone from last 1 month & it's performance is superb.
Also if you will wait for N5, it might not come as cheap as its predecessor (N4). N4 has hardware that will not be outdated for at least 2 years.
So the choice is yours....!! :good:

The Galaxy was quite popular and it still has much life left. That's why Samsung decided to create a successor...the Galaxy S3.
I agree that you shouldn't compare phones based on it's price. Just so you know when Google sells the phone they don't make a profit off of it. They lose money rather than gain.

HUGE development for the phone as well.

you got the new htc one and galaxy s4 and note 3 in the future of course these will beat out nexus 4 specs doesn't bring down the nexus 4

I love my nexus 4 i always got tired of my old phones quick, my touch 4g, galaxy s3, htc one s, etc.

can u hold off a while while using the s2?

you can´t say that, that´s a lie.
2 hours of screentime on a smartphone on which you can do ANYTHING are absolute CRAP
2 hours of screentime, on a 24 hours day, means that you won´t go from morning till evening.
period.
I just got my n4 last week, and I´m really angry because no one mentions that the battery is CRAP.
the phone is absolutely great, but the battery, as I might have already mentioned, is CRAP.
If you interested in getting Latest updates quickly and great ROM support, just get it.
Else HTC one and S4 would be better options...
Its always worth it as long as the phone was newly released

Relax. It's not a lie, the battery is phenomenal. I use my Nexus 4 the same exact way I used my Galaxy S3, and I used to get 10-12 hours on the S3 tops.

Sounds like you have some bad configurations/apps messing up your battery life.. or unrealistic expectations. One of the two.

You can't say that that's a lie either (see what I did there? )
He's speaking from his own experiences and you have no way of conclusively proving that he's lying and hasn't managed a day with 2 hours of screen on time. For some people the battery life will be more than adequate (e.g. for myself). For others it'll be a huge disappointment (e.g. for you). Try out different kernels and you may be able to improve on what you're currently getting. I, for one, managed 17 hours with 2hrs 40 minutes of screen on time (playing Real Racing 3, that thing is addictive) before the phone reached 10% battery. This was with brightness at 100% and the kernel that comes with PA3+.

Of course, I also don't have any 'battery saver app that kills every single feature of this phone in order to go through the day.
And there's nothing unrealistic in that.

I don't use any app to control my battery. I'm on stock 4.2.2 (not even rooted)
If 18-20 hours with 2.5-3 hours screen on time is not phenomenal for today's phones, please explain to me what is.
For the record no one is acting like a "fan boy", I'm not saying that the Nexus 4 is the best phone in the world or that other phones suck, all I am saying is that it has great battery life based on my experience comparing it to multiple Android phones. Every phone I have ever owned did not get this kind of battery life.

i'm sure you will love this phone. So far I've never found a phone with a better overall than nexus 4.
The design is classy and the processor is very good. battery life is good. and the front and the back of the phone is made by gorilla glass. camera is 8mp with flash supported. and there is front camera as well. Easy to customize and root. i've root a lot of phone before and this is the easiest. I root my n4 in <5mins. And the price is not really expensive as well. so this is really recommended. it's hard to find a better phone than n4 at its price.
I have had my Nexus 4 for two months now and am happy with the choice I made. I do recommend a good case or at least a bumper and screen protector. I would only consider the Google Edition Galaxy S4, and you will pay a $200 premium over the cost of the Nexus 4.
This phone will be supported for at least 2 years down the line with ota updates second to none. That alone makes it better than any other phone in my book. Plus most of the snapdragon 600's power is wasted on Samsung's touchwiz so the nexus 4 is at least as fast as the s4.
Posting threads like this get you a very biased opinion.
I will try to be as straight as I can without sounding like a device fan boy.
Decide what you are gonna do with the device. The nexus 4 is outstanding on the development side but lacking on features. Next decide how much time you want to spend messing with your device. Battery can be a bug factor. Next decide on memory. Nexus is limited there. Then choose the best device that suites you.
As long as it fits your needs there is no wrong device.
Wayne Tech Nexus
Yes and no. Depends on your usage patterns. Battery life on 4.2.2 was respectable. However with the 4.3 update a slew of problems have been found. My Nexus 4 currently has the: low battery life, camera flash bug, boot loader on power off bug, AOSP keyboard bug.
I would suggest asking around. If you need a workable phone (for now) get a N4 with 4.2.2 else go for 4.3 to save time

Yes while that's true I personally thing touch wiz is s*it and if I get the s4 I will be flashing cm and a customers kernel on it first thing. And I do spend a lot of time messing with my phone. Over clocking. Building customers kernels with extra features etc also a lot of time gaming and listening to music. And I'm not sure about the storage in the n4 because I do use a lot of storage for music pictures/video etc. And I do like the bigger screen of the s4 but I like the support the n4 will be getting. Even though I will be building/flashing custome ROMs/kernels on which ever phone I get. So that's kind of where I'm torn about it the storage and screen size of the s4 but the openness and support of the n4

My 2 cents
got a fair amount of hard earned cash to spend (enough for a note 3 or s4) on a new phone. I would prefer to get the note 3 as i like large phablets and have always been a fan of the note series. However, I have never physically seen one or used one. So before I go and spend £600 on a phone I would like to get a user opinion. Should I get the note 3? Or should I get the S4 instead?

Go for Note 3, I've upgraded to a Note 3 coming from the S4, far better!
Note 3
Get the Note 3, you will not regret it.
It barely heats up, it has AMAZING battery life.
NO ROOT and STOCK rom but I am getting 2 days of use from one charge easy
If I use REALLLY Heavy (Playing lots of 3D GAMES, Browsing, YOUTUBE HD, ALL LTE never WIFI It lasts me a full day, I still ALWAYS have 20-30% battery life when I go to sleep after this usage.
Other normal usage, I am not worried if i forget to charge cause I have about 60% batt remaining.
AMAZING
The specs is the BEST on the market atm too.
You will not regret the Note 3
No lie on the battery life, all those little time eater games I enjoy playing throughout the day used to kill my S3 by lunch, but the Note 3 I still come home with 30-40% left, the battery just keeps going and going.
And I must admit that I have become addicted to the large screen size, it's actually very comfortable to just kick back and surf the web on this phone, I'm not hunching or squinting for anything anymore and I've become fond of that fact.
If you like bigger devices already to begin with, go for the Note 3. You will come to regret buying a smaller device eventually if you go for the S4. (I most certainly did.)

faster larger screen and the most important advantage over S4 the stylus ( s pen ):good:

I come from an S4 too. The Note 3 is a perfect fit for me size-wise and feature-wise (s-pen basically). IMHO if you think the s3 or s4 are uncomfortably big , you definitely need to try the N3 before buying. If you can handle a couple more of centimeters in your pocket, I would go for the Note without hesitation

I have both, the note 3 has all the feature of the S4 plus the spen which gives you more things to play with. On the downside the Knox warranty void is a hassle if you want to run custom firmware, especially if there is a problem down the track, but then again the later firmware versions of the S4 has Knox, and the warranty void, too....
I also have both (will sell s4 actually) and i must say note series are always refined and perfected ones compared to s series. It has been like that in s3/note2 and believe me it is the same for s4/note3. Maybe a smaller margin but it is still there.
Personally i was waiting for the nexus 5 but it doesnt have enough space and i don't like on screen buttons.
I can't see why there's a lot of complaints about region locking and the knox software ?
I mean its a year warranty i've had many phones for over a year and never needed to return them ?
My Note 3 should arrive tomororow :highfive:
choose the one that fits you.
i come from s4.but i like note3's big screen.
I have both and I strongly recommend Note 3!
Ok I think I know which one to go for

Actually the N2 had awesome signal...just as good as any Motorola. Every other Samsung device GS1, GS3, N3 have had much worse signal sensitivity. That being said I would hold off on the N3. It's a nice phone, but not that much
better then the N2.

I had the s3, note 2 then s4 and now note 3 and this is the first phone i have ever had that dosen't feel like it'll be obsolete anytime soon. not only are the specifications still amazing ( i love the 3GB of ram) but the shape and size of the phone is perfect. its so thin and flat and the screen looks way better than the note 2. not just because the resolution is better but it feels like the colors pop more and not as flushed out as the note 2. Its not worth using your upgrade now because the note 4 is around the corner. but I promise the note 3 is better than the iphone 6 (or 8?) will ever be. If you can pick up a used one for cheap its definitely a worthy upgrade from the note 2. development is picking up for our verizon device too specifically the leaked NC2 bootloader which has a possibility of a "kexec" kernel workaround that I have faith beans, hashcode and other developers are working on.
I'm glad I upgraded now. The time that passed with no root for the S5 swayed me to get the Note 3. I'm glad that root was achieved for KK but it wasn't when I made my purchase. I wasn't going to take chances; instead I chose to buy before the retail shelves were stocked with KK. The Note 4 is going to be locked down even tighter.
There are stickies at the top of this section and your Note 2 section to discuss upgrading
Thanks

I would not do that, unless you are planning to do drawings on it or you are big fan of larger screen.
I'm sorry might have misconstrued the post I have a note 3 considering the s5

Then why not. S5 is a really good phone.
Afraid of change I assume. He's offering me a mint s5 and 40 bucks for my note 3. Both white. I have tons of extras s view case otterbox a few spare batteries. Just debating the trade. Dunno why

LOL. I would say your friend is clever.
What do you think the S5 has which Note 3 doesn't?
Not exactly sure except a more managable screen. Finger print scanner. More updated firmware that's about it

Yeah exactly. Unless you need a more manageable phone there's no point in trading a Note 3 for an S5, at least that's what I think. From my personal experience I have seen the TouchWiz on Note 2 was better optimized than the TW on my S4, now unless Samsung has changed entirely I am confident that same case retains for Note 3 and S5.
I am getting one within next week too, and going for Note 3.
Again, this is my opinion, yours might differ.
The S5 has better specs including the better camera and overall hardware. If that matters to you then its worth the upgrade, I personally bought the LTE-A which has the same specs as the note 4 but in a more manageable/compact size.
Just curious I'm currently just getting back into android. Have been with ios for yearsssss now. What phone is lte-a? I obviously know what lte is. Just not up to speed on all the models yet thanks for your input dude much appreciated

S5, better phone all round. The note 4 would be a more worthy choice over the s5 but not the note 3. Besides the pen and the screen size, the extra memory, both ram and storage. Other than that its behind in terms of specs. The s5 for me Is the best phone you can buy right now. Samsung's done it again, if only they hadn't made the s4, because the s2 and s3 were amazing devices for their time. The s5 is in line with them, nothing wrong with the note 3, just don't think its better..
Made the trade absolutely love the s5. Buttery smooth and just a beautiful device

just traded my note 3 for s5 and i don't regret at all. note have a fabulous battery in standby (less then 1% per hour drain), but as soon as your screen is lit, it will drain like there's no tomorrow. On S5 it is quite the opposite: stand-by battery is nothing spectacular (2-3% per hour), but screen on consumption is absolutely brilliant: seldom it gets past 6% per hour while reading and no more de 10% per hour when wathing HD movies (full .mkv files). not sure about the camera differencies, only spent little time doing photos on note. overall, it's a wothy switch, I wouldn't look back.
I have to day I agree made the switch and absolutely love the s5. No comparison really. Hands down a better device. The note 3 is no slouch but man this s5 rocks
