OK, don't flame me. Cause this answer isn't the easiest to find.
I have rooted my OG droid and thunderbolt, didn't root my maxx HD. But I have the G2 on Verizon and I want to wireless tether. Is there a method to root that I just run an app similar to the old one touch methods and not have to install a whole ROM? Then can I wireless tether with fox if? Or do I need to install that Verizon apk to enable wireless tether? I don't want to do anything else with root and I want to keep my phone as is without a reset.
Please educate me.

Hey guys looking to help my cousin with rooting her mytouch 3g to have wireless tethering. Jsut wanted to see if android-wifi-tether apk works fine with root access?
Tethering is all thats needed, no need for recovery or anything else. So i figure the androot way is the way to go.
Thanks
You have to flash a custom recovery to root so you'll get that either way. Couldn't personally comment on wifi tethering as I haven't used it.
Sent from my HTC Magic using XDA App
Sorry to be a pain I am a newbie to Andriod I would like to root my Atrix simply to be able to tether in Europe as hotels and the like have crazy wifi tarrifs also I would like to be able to use hdtv dock webtop without paying for the mulimedia dock.
I already am updated to 1.8.3 not rooted my question is if I root with gingerbreak how do I unroot if I have to return phone under warranty. Please explain how to do this in FOR DUMMIES mode as I am completely clueless and I am not tech savvy at all and never done anything like this before.
Thanks for your help and patience I am an old fart pensioner 65yrs old
Rooting your phone pretty much means giving up that warranty, the end. However, Gingerbreak v1.2 has unroot. Never used unroot myself so I cant go into detail. Once you obtain root, use this to tether wirelessly, or this for wired.
thank you for your reply is gingerbreak 1.2v ok for att iforgot to mention i am on att
Yes, you can use it with att. You will have to enable sideloading. Wish i could tell you from experience about the unroot but from what i have read on the forums this user said he successfully unrooted his atrix with Gingerbreak 1.2.
I also read on ChainsDD's twitter today that the upcoming SuperUser Elite has a ghost mode resulting in undetectable root, we will have to wait and see. But the general rule is once you root your phone it is up to you to ensure it continues to function properly, not att.
Hello all,
So I rooted my buddies droid X and sideloaded wi-fi tether app to get his tether going but it turns on the verizon hotspot and tries to get us to subscribe. I am quickly finding out that it's not quite what I'm used to when rooting a phone. I've rooted my old hero, my gf's evo and my evo 3d all well and good. clockwork recoveries, custom roms and kernels, tethers etc. I'm a midlevel root user but on HTC phones and on sprint. Here I'm feeling like a noob (I did check the noob guide for answers but am not finding what I'm looking for same with search function).
Now that I'm rooted on this phone how do I install a recovery so I can install a custom rom? Is there a link to a tutorial? Will a custom rom have tether working the free way? I figure once I install a rooted or custom rom the tether should work the way I'm used to an not try to take me to verizon and I also am reading that there is a new OTA pushing and dont want to lose root. I've been looking on this forum for a solution and am not quite finding my answer and it seems to be because things are listed a bit different than they are on the EVO forums on XDA. I thank anyone ahead of time and am sorry for the questions.
Disregard. Finally figured out that I need the Droid 2 bootstrap rather than the droid x to get into recovery and it's all gravy now.
Check my sig if you need more help.
You can use Droid X bootstrap as long as you have USB debugging turned off.
Hi everyone. I rooted a friend/customer's Droid Incredible that came with 2.3 because he wanted to be able to tether wirelessly. This is essentially the ONLY thing he cares about. He is not a techie and is NOT a tinkerer.
I performed the downgrade (to 2.2) and root of his phone the loooong way (ADB, ZergRush, and unrevoked) and successfully got Wifi Tether to work. It's precisely how he wants his phone.
The problem is that now Verizon wants to push the 2.3 update on his phone. I am assuming that this will kill his root and superuser permissions. Once the phone is rooted on 2.2, what is my best option here? I would assume that he doesn't want to throw any wacky roms on there, but I know he doesn't want to get that "Would you like to update?" screen 10x a day.
Should I have him run the update?
Is there a way to disable the update?
Any ideas? Thanks in advance, everyone!

Have you obtained s-off? Your best bet would be to get s-off if your not already and then flash one of the stock based roms built from the newest ota ( stock+, wildstangs 4.08.605.2, touch of blue ), and then set up wifi tether on it. Also you can edit epst settings on a non rooted (or rooted) phone to allow use of the stock wifi hotspot app for free.
At this point, since the phone works exactly how he wants it, I'd prefer to disable the update. Is there a way to make it shaddup?

Titties! Perfect advice!
I guess I may have been spoiled with the G3s app that rooted it.
Another question. You have to have constant internet connection using the existing root method?
I guess not.
