Hello all,
So I rooted my buddies droid X and sideloaded wi-fi tether app to get his tether going but it turns on the verizon hotspot and tries to get us to subscribe. I am quickly finding out that it's not quite what I'm used to when rooting a phone. I've rooted my old hero, my gf's evo and my evo 3d all well and good. clockwork recoveries, custom roms and kernels, tethers etc. I'm a midlevel root user but on HTC phones and on sprint. Here I'm feeling like a noob (I did check the noob guide for answers but am not finding what I'm looking for same with search function).
Now that I'm rooted on this phone how do I install a recovery so I can install a custom rom? Is there a link to a tutorial? Will a custom rom have tether working the free way? I figure once I install a rooted or custom rom the tether should work the way I'm used to an not try to take me to verizon and I also am reading that there is a new OTA pushing and dont want to lose root. I've been looking on this forum for a solution and am not quite finding my answer and it seems to be because things are listed a bit different than they are on the EVO forums on XDA. I thank anyone ahead of time and am sorry for the questions.
Disregard. Finally figured out that I need the Droid 2 bootstrap rather than the droid x to get into recovery and it's all gravy now.
Check my sig if you need more help.
You can use Droid X bootstrap as long as you have USB debugging turned off.

Had my Droid 1 now for about 7 months, love it, but have always wondered about rooting. Finally did it last night with this great, easy method via Android Forums and Droid Forums - way to root FRG22D without downgrading first, using SDK, Motorola drivers, and rageagainstthecage. Long story short, unless I've missed something, what I have now is stock FRG22D rooted.
Question from this noob is - Are there themes for stock, rooted FRG22D or do I have to load something like Cyanogen or Bugless in order to get any other themes at all?
Apologies if I'm totally missing the boat here...
Load cm6 there are tons of themes, and the rom rules. I'm sure you'll love it as much as i do.

Ok so I'm new to customizing Android. I had a droid Eris but i never did anything other than changing launchers and such, now i have the Droid 2 Global (in white ) and im feelin up for customizing it.
Just to give some history on myself i had an HTC Touch Pro and did alot of romming and stuff on it so im not a total noob. However, android is quite different from WM from what ive gathered.
So here's what i get... I've got it rooted using the z4root program and i have bootstrap recovery for it. From my understanding, to rom an android device you go to this custom recovery and (after savin a rom's .zip file to your sdcard) you flash the zip to the phone, bam new rom. (QUESTION 1) Now is there anything else i need to know about flashing a rom, like anything else i should do other than just flash the zip. i keep hearing things about wipe this and that and nandroid backups and such but dont fully understand all that so help there would be appreciated.
Now to more device specific questions (QUESTION 2) i keep hearing the term "sbf". from what i've gathered it has something to do with the stock rom (right?) and for the D2G we dont have this yet (also right?) and if i want to play it safe for now as i am indeed a newbie to this, i should wait until there is a D2G sbf to flash a custom rom just in case something goes wrong i can go back to it(also also right?)
(QUESTION 3) Also, i see a few roms floating around in the D2 forums, but only one (Droid 2 Global Stock, deodexed, busybox blah blah) actually says its for the D2G. Should i stray away from flashing any of the others because they might brick/not work with my phone? Also what does "deodexed" and "busybox" and terms like that mean? Are there similar terms i should familiarize myself with?
If you had the patience to read all that, i thank you. If you have the kindness to answer any or all of my questions, i thank you again! Any help you guys got is much appreciated
Short answer. No roms are available for the D2G as yet. I know someone who tried the fission rom with success but had a few bugs with it. For now, root works so you can remove all the junk motorola included(well I like them).
SBF is said to enable you to return your phone back to factory if it's messed up or I guess brick. Without this file, no devs are willing to brick their $500+ device right now.
And so the wait continues.
*Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong..
alright, that makes sense, i wouldnt want to either lol. you say you can remove junk by being rooted...how so? all ive been able to do rooted that i couldnt do unrooted is wireless tether and adblock lol.

download titanium back up and remove what you don't want better yet just freeze it instead..also be careful..some apps are not met to be removed.
I have a EVO 4g fully rooted and romed and themed up so my friend with a DX wanted to the same on his phone. So I read forums and wiki here and still a bite confused trying to make sure I know what I'm doing before I root his phone. Bear with me please. So as I read I can root his DX with z4root app then get rom manager to flash clockwork mod recovery and go into recovery and flash roms?? I got confused becuase some roms and places talk about a bootstrap x recovery. Can someone please help me understand the process for the DX aka Evo's Moto Half Brother lol. Thanks guyz
Sorry to post this question, I searched but did not find a definitive answer (at least in my searches).
Is the R2D2 rooted thru the same process as the standard D2? And, will the same ROM's work on this newly rooted R2D2?
Thanks. I will be getting the wife said R2D2 shortly and wanted to be sure of the process prior to her screaming at me for bricking her new phone.
I have rooted an Eris, Inc, Evo and D2 in the past so I am prepared for all the goodness to come.
Thank you.
You can root it via z4root, ive done it on 2 of em without problem.
All you will have to do it reboot the phone after installing z4root or else the app will hang when trying to root it. after a reboot the app works flawlessly.
Awesome, thanks. Good piece of info to know. Thanks
So for the last few days I have decided to root my phone but it is so confusing for me.
Droid x specs: 2.3 gingerbread... 596

thx bro do i get boot strapper from online? and for titaniium back up and stuff how do i do the rom back ups sorry for being stupid im just new to this
Thanks
Also, on the app store bootstrap says " YOU MUST BE ROOTED TO USE THIS APPLICATION. FOR DROID X ONLY."
and u said use this then root... im confused.
If you dive into this before your really ready, it's likely that you'll end up with a brick and not know how to back out. The only solution is to search and read until you are comfortable with the entire process. Google tutorials on how to root gingerbread stock. It involves SBFing back to froyo, rooting with z4root, installing bootstrap, and flashing, but that is only the broadest of summaries. You really should understand the whole process BEFORE jumping in. That said, it's not really all that hard with a little research. Good luck!
i got my dx about a week ago. i am rooted running cm7 nightlies now. i came from the inc and ran new roms every week on that and kernels and new recoveries all the time. it took a day or so to understand how the dx works...
this is what i found
my dx came with 2.3 on it. i tried z4root and gingerbreak and neither worked. after reading alot i found sbf looked like the best route. I sbf'd back to 2.2 (Froyo) I then ran z4root and bang I had root. rebooted and i used dxgbrooted stock image. i downloaded both dx bootstrapper and d2 bootstrapper. d2 is for gb based roms, dx is for 2.2 based. i had a bunch of trouble with the bootstrappers and it was annoying. i continued to run the dxgbrooted rom and i hated it, it so freaking slow and crappy. i then flashed a nightly of cm7 and i bootlooped, so i had to sbf and root the thing again and reinstall cm7 nightly, i havent been happier since. these stock based roms and cool UI features motoblur and sense, they suck IMO and i like vanilla or cm7.
