Hello fellow comrades of XDA,
Between windows 8.1 and USB driver issues, I'm going crazy! - now that this is out, onward to my problem.
I just brought my Nexus 7 2012 32GB back to stock (4.3.0) using stock image, etc.
Now, when I go into developer mode and click USB debug (enable), my Nex hangs for a few seconds and then restarts. USB debug is not enabled upon auto restart.
When I go into settings>storage and change from MTP to PTP, my Nex hangs for a few seconds and then restarts. PTP is not enabled upon self restart.
The other weird thing is, my computer (win 8.1) does not recognize my Nex. I cannot browse any files inside the Nex, as it does not show up in my computer. But when I have it plugged in during fastboot, it recognizes it and I can use fastboot commands.
I need your guys' help please on these mater. I need to be able to enable usb debug mode, be able to enable PTP mode to help troubleshoot why the Nex does not want to show up on the computer, and have the Nex show up on the computer for file browsing and ADP utilization purposes.
Any bit of hits and clues on how to tackle this matter is much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
~A
Update 1: Did some more thorough testing of the issues I am facing above. I found that that if I am using stock image JWR66Y, then I have the issues with Nexus freezing when trying to enable usb debug or PTP vs MTP. But if I am on the JWR66V stock image (which is the one before - but both are 4.3.0), then I do not have the reboot issues with enabling USB debug or PTP vs MTP storage. But in either case, I still cannot get my win 8.1 computer to detect the Nex as a drive. So I still cannot browse the files on the Nex. But in both cases I can detect the Nex on my computer in fastboot. Very strange and still very frustrating! Anyhow, some food for thought. I hope someone has more light to this issue. I can't be the only one experiencing this.

Hi guys,
After upgrading to ICS I've been unable to connect my pad to the PC. This is usually not a problem, but last night I needed adb to re-root it. Nothing worked, nothing connected. Tried installing drivers and the Asus sync, but no luck.
Is this a known problem? Anyone got a solution? I doubt it's the hardware as I connected a few days before upgrading...
Found a solution. Went into Settings->Storage and turned MTP off and back on.

THANK YOU! Everytime I plug in my ET4G to the dock to charge it that stupid MTP crap always comes up. Had no idea I could disable it. Thanks!
yeah, this doesn't always help... I had the same problem when i first got my TF101, and i tried all the tricks, the one mentioned here with mtp, enabling and desabling debug mode, turning off and on with usb plugged in, and some others i can't remember... nothing.
In case anyone else is looking for the answer and the quick tips don't work, what did it for me was installing Android Revolution HD rom. I've read that this problem could also be bootloader related.
Anyways, cheers.
How to connect an ICS device to your computer
Step 1. Connect device to computer via USB
Step 2. Set USB connection as Media Device (MTP) (p.s. if you use a Mac you need to download Android File Transfer)
Step 3. Disable USB debugging if enabled
I hope this helped.
when you need turn off MTP it mean your computer doesn't have driver.
If you need using MTP go to asus page and download driver. it's easy to install driver ^^...
recently I can't understand why same file but the computer at my office can't install that file instead other computers working normal... maybe my work place using old windows version...
Like I wrote earlier - mine was actually in MTP mode, but I had to switch to camera mode and back to MTP for it to start working. Thanks for the replies, though. Hopefully it will help some other people with the same problems
I'm not sure when this problem first appeared. For whatever reason, my phone doesn't show up at all when connected to either of my two PCs. It must have when I first rooted the phone (to load ChainSU) but I'm not sure if the problem is recent or occurred immediately thereafter.
USB debugging is disabled. When I plug my phone into a computer, it attempts to install the MTP Driver and fails. When I uninstall my device, it disappears and I'm unable to manually install the driver's I've downloaded from other threads. When I load into the Bootloader, my device is recognized by Fastboot.
I'm hesitant to factory reset as this will leave me unable to root if the problem persists, which is important to me as I can get rid of the yellow tint on this screen.
Any thoughts?

Are you definitely sure usb debugging is disabled? The phone should install as a portable device on your pc. Also ensure to enter your password onto your phone when connected otherwise the phone will not show up its contents.
Make sure for windows media player to be updated to the latest, for the windows mtp driver.

There are a few things you can try. Have you tried uninstalling the drivers completely then reinstalling from the toolkit? In the past, I've had issues where the phone wouldn't be accessible in some way on one computer but would be fine on another, so maybe try a different computer to try to narrow down the problem as to whether it's an issue with the phone or the computer? Also, this may sound a bit ridiculous, but simply switching USB cables and / or ports has fixed detection issues for me in the past as well--something to consider.

Remove any existing drivers (while phone is connected), do the same for other android devices if you have any, then reboot and install Universal Naked Drivers. Have always had success with this driver pack.

100% sure on both counts.
I have this same issue with my rooted nexus 4, I've tried 3 different computers and several cables and it never connects to the PC and only charges the phone. It doesn't even give me option to choose media files.
I've had this issue before, my Nexus/Computer was acting in complete stupidity. When connecting the phone to your computer you will see a notification saying "Connected as a media device" on your phone, just touch it, and change it to "Camera (PTP)". It might access the camera for you, but It actually accessed the storage for me.

Thats not the problem, it doesn't give any option. It doesn't show up on the computer at all and only charges. It's the same for every computer.

I'm thinking we've screwed something up with the phone's side of the MTP protocol - mine is totally independent of the cord/computer used. All the correct drivers installed.
Have you tried Factory Resetting? I'm really hoping this is a workable option.
If you have a recovery back up the current Rom and flash stock and see if it's working

if the phone is locked with a pin/password/pattern unlock it.
I had same problem on my pc yesterday. Even if the drivers installer showed up that installation was successful, somehow for a mtp mode system was using some other Microsoft driver. Correct one was only used in ptp mode. So when I connected n4 in mtp mode storage wasn't available, when I switched to ptp mode everything was fine. Turn on your usb debug, switch on mtp and connect. Go to device manager in system, find your nexus there and rmb on it and manually reinstall driver. After this my n4 is visible in system in mtp mode again.

The problem is that even if I switch between MTP and PTP it still does nothing, I have tried multiple cables, computers and have reflashed the ROM and wiped the device but it still does not connect with the PC. This is frustrating.

Is yours able to connect during Bootloader/Recovery? Fastboot/ADB have no trouble recognizing my device.
It's really odd that if these things work, meaning your USB connection is fine, replacing the all of software fixed nothing... unless MTP occurs at a much lower level of the OS (maybe kernel is corrupted?)
I've got a similar problem that others have posted - PCs not detecting my N4. I got it last Friday (2/1) from Google and after the registering process and updating to 4.2.1, I connected it to my Win7 laptop and it showed on the PC as a drive. But since I couldn't copy/paste Office docs to that drive and had to do that through Dropbox, I didn't bother trying to reconnect until Monday, at which time the PC didn't detect it. Neither will one other Win7 nor two XP (both with WMP10) PCs. Have tried multiple cables, all of which work with other Android devices (pre 3.0). I've seen several suggestions on this and other threads, but one major issue I'm having is that some of the fixes require enabling USB Debugging. For the life of me I can't find that option in the N4's Settings. Unlike my other phones, there is no Applications subcategory under Settings on my N4 (4.2.1, Build JOP40D). Can anyone help me find that option? TIA.
Edit - Found answer. Click on Build in About Phone setting 7 times. That activated Developer options. Now to try the fixes which require USB Debugging mode turned on.
When I plug in my nexus4 to a computer it wont show up...most of the time.
I've used 3 different cables.
4 different computers, running, linux mint, win7 and XP.
I installed clocwork mod recovery today and then it showed up as a new device on a XP copmuter but then it would never show up again.
I'm rooted, running carbon ROM, usually with TWRP recovery but switched today.
I've tried it in MTP and PTP modes, debugging on and off.
it charges just fine from a PC.
any ideas are appreciated.

For some of the computers. Today I'm at work and I don't have the drivers installed. I keep my phone plugged in to charge. In the past the PC, running windows XP, always pops up the new device found notification. It won't even do that except for the 1 time mentioned earlier.
it it possible for the recovery image to affect things?
Mine won't show up in my PC (windows 8) If USB debugging is off. I'm fairy certain this behavior started at some point during the rooting process because I had a hell of a time getting the files to the phone.

From what I noticed, when you use a lockscreen with some kind of protection the device memory will not show up if it hasnt't been unlocked in the past few minutes or before connected. This is mostly for security reasons to make sure you are the one accesing the device..
I am not sure if this is the source of the problem you are mentioning but just to let you know
That's not it, I'm doing this with it right in front of me, unlocked

Have your nexus connected and disable developer settings and delete your adb driver. Then select mtp mode while connected and you should be able to connect now.

FWIW, I have encountered odd connection issues with my Nexus 4 running bone-stock Android.
As I recall, it won't connect to ADB in MTP mode. In PTP mode, it usually works. Personally, I just said "screw it" and starting using MyPhoneExplorer for everything.
Enable USB debugging in your phone. Nuff said.
nothing works, PTP, debugging on/off, etc.
well I finally got a hold of my wife N4, it connects just fine. so I think it's definitely a hardware issue.
Ifixit shows how to replace the daughter board.....but I'd rather send it to LG for warranty replacement but I have it rooted.
If I could just get it to connect once more I would flash it back to stock.
After trying to Sideload the 4.4 Update onto my Wifi Nexus 7 (2012) I'm unable to connect to my Computer in MTP Mode & can only connect in PTP Mode which is far more limited than MTP Mode. I did a Factory Reset & updated to 4.4 OTA, but I'm now still unable to connect in MTP Mode, when I use MTP Mode I get a Google Nexus 7 ADB Interface in Device Manager with Manufacturer ID of ClockworkMod has anyone got any clues how to get MTP Mode working?
P.S. I'm unrooted and have no idea how the ClockworkMod ADB Driver got installed and haven't got a clue how to permanently remove it.

Look in your PC's Control Panel - do you see Portable Devices (it's most likely missing or not showing up)
Folks over at Nexus 5 (I owned both devices) are running into similar problems - long story short, it's corrupted and/or missing usb devices drivers. Simplistic solution, use the computer (assuming you are running Windows 7 or Vista and not Linux) SYSTEM RESTORE feature & roll back to last few days, it should be a successful effort & then reboot. Reconnect your device, let it sit & recognize the device, install drivers, etc. - do this with USB debugging OFF first, and when it is done - enable USB debugging, let it finish.
Now, reboot PC again to be sure, and connect. usb cable again - give it 3 to 5 seconds, your Auto Play should be popping up with prompt to open folders/files, etc.
Check your CP again, you should now see Portable Devices part of the hardware, and Google Nexus 4 (yes, that's what is on mine)
Let me know if this solution works for you - the alternative is to uninstall all usb drivers, reboot, install, etc. etc. Please post your results if you choose to follow this dummy's approach, thanks.
Bought new N6p 64gb
Updated it to latest version by OTA.
Now, i'm trying to connect it to PC (win7 ultimate) and it's not recognized.
Have also Nexus 5 that working great with MTP but the Nexus 6p won't no matter what I tried.
Enabled debugging, tried to install latest Google drivers... Everything.
Still, can't see it in Windows to unlock and root.
Spend two hours to figure out what is wrong. Windows says the mtp is installing but after few seconds gives me an error that it didn't install.
Help me please.

Did you select usb for mtp from the notification?
It's Android's issue!
Enable Developer Options!
& when plug OTG to phone, go to menu "Select USB Configuration" & 1st select Charging & Again select MTP mode!
You really won't believe it. After being frustrated with the N6p and opening this thread, I plugged the phone to pc with usb cable, shut it down and then booted into bootloader. PC recognized the phone as adb. After that I just powered on the phone normally (into the Android os) and waolla, PC recognized it right. Checked twice and both (N5 and N6p) working as supposed to be.
