I'm surprised because he singled out a phone that is widely praised for it's design... one that actually has better ergonomics and feels better in hand than not only the iPhone he praises... but any other phone currently available.
Here's the comment I posted over there(that will likely never get approved):
This article is hilariously off-base from every other article being written lately about the MotoX... It is THE Android phone right now... Besting the HTC One, Galaxy S 4 and Nexus 5 in real world usage....
It is also widely praised for it's design and ergonomics... you know... exactly what the blocky, sharp-edged, iPhone lacks.

Ok, so you are surprised that an unabashed apple fanboi has negative things to say about an Android device.
This is the line that got me:
The Moto X flunked, flopped and tanked, and has already been dubbed the most disappointing smart phone of the year.

By who? Most of the reviews I've seen have been positive. If anything about the Moto X has been a failure, it was how the launch was handled. Fumbling with Moto maker was their biggest mistake. This is because of its AT&T exclusivity. Prospective buyers would pass on the phone for other carriers because it appeared inferior. But bad sales figures does not a bad device make.
Design with a capital D is what is winning over Apple cohorts --that subtle combination of materials, weight, lines, and how it feels in your hand.

This is an interesting thing to say, since the design of the 5S is almost completely unchanged from the 5. One could argue the "if it ain't broke" angle, but evolution is not revolution. Apple did not reinvent, it maintained.
In addition, "winning over Apple cohorts" goes against the earlier derision of "obedient bloggers." Are "Apple cohorts" not also in a camp of followers?
So yeah, Apple-happy post by Apple-happy person. Nothing to see here.

no, I'm surprised by the arguments he chose to base his derision on... I mean, he specifically chose to argue fallacies.
It would be like me arguing that:
Android devices are over-piced, the iPhone and, in fact, all apple products are far less expensive that their non-apple competition.

In addition, the lack of popularity of Apple products gives the user status as a trend setter. In fact, if you own one, you may very likely be the only person you know who owns one and may never see another iPhone.

No matter what you think of huffington post there's one thing they are really good at. Writing articles (and especially headlining them) for SEO and maximum traffic.
He has an opinion. HP gave it a great SEO headline. "digital divide"? really? Usually that means something else, but that doesn't matter if the hits keep coming in. Still it's just on person's opinion.
While I disagree with his opinion and love the design, feel and just about everything about my moto X there's one thing he's right about. This phone has not sold well. Certainly the roll out had an effect. Google saying it would be cheaper or there's a cheaper version coming didn't help. There were lots of reasons to hesitate... BUT I am not sure google/moto built this phone to be a hit. This phone is about the future of google, android and moto, and moto's reputation. Sometimes it takes a product cycle or two. Did anyone think Samsung would take over the world when the galaxy S was new? Hell I think for most of them the GPS didn't work.
When I bought my X it was between moto and apple. I can't say the design of either is bad. Apple is really good at design. They are also good at getting the most out of hardware. A lot of companies follow their lead. The moto x was the only phone out there trying to do something different and (IMO) doing it well.

Yes, but most phones do their best at the beginning of the product cycle. Prior to the release the buzz was that moto was going to release some crazy game changer that would fly off shelves and give samsung a run for their money. That's not this device. I think the X will be one of those phones five years from now that people will look back at and remember as the start of something.
True but then again all the pre-release everyone thought it was going to be a mid-tier phone and to just wait for the N5. The ATT exclusive didn't help either but I have to agree with you about the start of something

Now, if someone would be kind enough to point me to the youtube channel where some kid keeps spewing **** like his mother bought him an imac that has a touchscreen etc. Came across it a few years ago, but was foolish not to subscribe. Some said he was stupid while some thought he did it on purpose.
Yeah, I tweeted back to the guy that he didn't know what he was talking about. I just hate that articles like this one could hurt the Moto X sales and make Google/Motorola go another direction. Other articles also making a big deal about 500,000 sales in 3rd quarter being bad. Well - the phone was only out for 5 weeks or the 3rd quarter and was only on AT&T at the time. So you cannot compare that to worldwide sales of Apple and Samsung devices. What an idiot.

Precisely. This is a site that advocates against vaccination, so I find it hard to take anything they write seriously.
As for the sales, be careful with the 500,000 "shipped" number - that doesn't necessarily mean 500,000 "sold" - i.e. we don't know how many are sitting in storage.

Ok, so this is of course old news, I just stumbled over the article by accident a few minutes ago and thought I'd share because of the hilarity of it all. It was a pretty laughable article in 2007, but even more so now when Android is in full swing and is getting better by the month and more and more manufacturers joins the OHA.
Hindsight 20/20 and all that, but most of us hardcore Androiders knew Android would not fail, despite what a few self-proclaimed experts said on their blogs. We knew it even as far back as 2007/2008. Ben Kunz obviously didn't, though.
Lol just read this Ben Kunz what a MOD EDIT

It's heartening news, but you gotta consider that percentage growth is one of those marketing spin numbers. A platform that is selling 1M units in 2008 experiencing a 900% growth sells an additional 9M. A platform selling 10M units in 2008 only has to grow 90% to experience the same increase in sales growth.
Well, to be honest, if the G1 looked like that prototype picture...I wouldn't have bought it. That is one seriously ugly looking phone with a tiny ass screen.

True, but as a self-proclaimed expert on all things tech he should of course have known Android is not about hardware (let alone about prototype hardware). Android is about software.
I knew that as soon as I first heard and read about Android back in 2007, I bet you knew that, and I also bet most people on this forum knew that -- we knew the possibilities was and is almost endless. Ben Kunz, however, did not. And he wrote a downright stupid article about it, showing off his ignorance.
It did bring us lots of amusement though, so kudos to Ben for making a fool out of himself

I hear what you are saying, but lets...for arguments sake...equate a cell phone to a woman (no offense to women...but its the best modern day analogy I can make at the moment).
Okay, men (in this case the generic term "men" means "customers") look for a woman, they want it all...sexy, intelligent, and able to do a lot of things (interpret that as you see fit).
A G1 fits most of that. A G1, while not the sexiest in the world, is decent enough looking...but what she lacks in looks she makes up for by being highly intelligent and capable of performing a variety of tasks you may hope she can do...as a woman.
The Android prototype in the picture may be able to do a lot of tasks, but she can't do everything...and, while intelligent, she is seriously to fat (wide), to short (squat and square) and way too fricken ugly to really be considered anything more than a friend (like when you look at your buddies cell phone that was a free give-away for signing a contract).
Now, to really get the whole package, Android phones need to take a page from Apple's book and make something super sexy like an iPhone with all the other Android and tech components in the G1...only with longer battery life.

I'm sure they did consider OLED for the iPhone, but there's no way anyone could meet the supply demands. Samsung can't make them fast enough.
Jesus guys, lay off already. iPhone 4 is an amazing piece of hardware, but Android phones are released every other week, and the hardware is bound to catch up and surpass apple's. The article's author clearly has a defective iPhone, writing about it as if it had any kind of relation to all iPhones is at the very least misleading.
We all know where this is heading. The world is moving towards Open, and eventually Jobs will kill iOS with all his crazy "save people from porn" shenanigans. We don't need to act as if they were religions. It's just a fact, with Google backing it, Android will eventually win out.
All iPhones 4's are defective with their external antenna design.
The actual hardware is sweet. Unfortunately the software is all chained up and limited.

I think MOST of the hate towards Samsung is that they're slow to update software, followed by buggy OS releases, and finally the plastic construction.
I personally think they're making the best hardware out there right now, with some compelling products, as long as you can someone else (like Google or the dev community here) to make the software "right."

I actually prefer the plastic construction. Using a metal touch-screen phone when the temperature is below freezing is not comfortable.
Also, what would happen if I dropped the phone? The Samsung frame and exterior parts would break, but by doing so less shock would be transmitted to the expensive parts inside. Which is how a motorcycle helmet works.
The worst thing about Samsung is the software. My I5700 will never be "right". A few dozen OS updates have been made, but nobody knows why, because none of the big bugs were ever fixed. Good hardware, lousy software.
I think it would be fair to say that 2010 was the year for Samsung, and judging by CES, 2011 will be the year for Motorola. And as far as the Verizon iphone goes, if what I heard is true (which would be a dumb move on Apple's part) and the iphone 4 will be coming out in the next month or so, Apple better have figured out their antena issue or there will be some very unhappy Verizon customers out there.

Not sure I agree that 2011 will the year of Motorola.
Samsung's announced (and released already) some compelling products for 2011. It's not just ALL about CPU speed or # of cores.
Granted it's a matter of preference, but in my opinion, no one's come close to Samsung's SAMOLED screens yet (iPhone 4's close, but not there), and SAMOLED Plus screens should be even better. With LTE phones and some really smart tablet designs, Samsung certainly going to be competitive.
Personally, I don't see myself with anything that's not SAMOLED or better...display size and appearance is most important to me these days, as long as the CPU/GPU are fast enough for my apps. So far 1ghz single core is there. Dual core not interesting until there's a killer app I need that requires it. Maybe in 20102...?

Who knows, Samsung might end up being on the top again this year depending on what announces they have at Mobile World Conference. I doubt Motorola has anything else up their sleeves if they are attending that conference after seeing what they announced at CES.
True, I tell everyone that samsung makes the best hardware in the mobile market. When I bought my Captivate, one of my iphone friends was sorely tempted to switch to the Captivate. So, software issues aside, Samsung hardware is the best out there at the moment. But the Atrix looks like it's going to be a serious piece of hardware.

You don't think that the iPhone being released on America's 2nd biggest carrier will affect competition? Well here's a humbling fact:
Nobody who posts on XDA affects smartphone sales. We are a negligible fraction of smartphone users. You know who use smartphones, especially iPhones? Every teenager in America. Every college student in America. Mothers. Fathers. Grandparents. Everyone outside the small walls of XDA.
All of those people will perk up when then iPhone is released on Verizon. And the added competition will, necessarily, drive innovation for Android. That's a Good Thing.
You may not consider the iPhone as anything comparable to Android, and of course myself and everyone else who has the will to create an XDA account would agree, but the rest of the world does. And they're the ones that drive innovation, not us.

Oh well, this Nexus S will ride me through all the guinea pig dual core phones of 2011.

I totaly agree with your last part.. oh well.. i guess we have to get used to it that we are the elite minority
Jokes aside.. the iPhone can be consisered as a competitor only because it is just another smartphone like all the Android phones out there.. when it comes to advancement the Android will always be ahead because of the sheer number of devices being available.. hetherto the iPhone is the iPod of the mp3 players..and its considered a trendy brand all teenagers must have until they grow up and get influenced by us veterans

I think you're making it out to be a bigger deal than it is really. Yes I'm sure there will be decent VZW iphone sales, but most of the people who want an icrap already have one by now.
I really doubt there's even 10m icrap lovers out there on VZW that couldnt make the switch because they could get any service from ATT. 10m additional icrap users is nothing when android is has 300k new activations every day.

Now what does he mean by better phones?
- Better Hardware? I highly doubt it, like I said previously; iOS is only one phone and releases every one or two years (Whatever it is) whereas Android releases one every other week. iPhone may beat the competition and have that "king" for a couple of months, but it is just a matter of time until something else takes over. iOS is only one phone, Android is attacking iOS from all angles (Motorola, Samsung, LG, HTC, and more).
- Better Firmware with newer updates? This may be on Apple's side due to Android's fragmentation but that is mainly due to manufacturers and the carriers. But since this is the Nexus forum, we're pretty much guaranteed to have the newest and latest Android version.
How exactly is this competition? There's a saying that says, "quality over quantity." Just because Lady Gaga is getting more sales than another artist doesn't mean that she's a better artist. Or another example is, just because more people use Windows.. does it necessarily mean that its a better OS than Linux? No. It just means that it is more "mainstream," it necessarily doesn't mean its better. For as I care, I can really care less about the numbers that iOS is selling compared to Android. This is pretty much Mac vs. Windows revisited but on a more portable battlefield.
And I highly doubt that Verizon would stop marketing the "Droid" just because they have the iPhone. Droid has been a highly successful marketing term for them.

Stereotypical much? That's like saying every teenager in the U.S. has a iPod. Yeah the majority has one but does it mean every single one of them have a iPod? No.
And XDA has a iPhone section, just saying.
Also.... as another backup statement, since iPhone is not exclusive to ONE carrier in Europe.. they have multiple carriers (Vodafone, T-Mobile UK, etc)... take a look at their perspective. Take a look at who's striving there, Android or iOS?
Something lovely was announced:

Their phones are going to suck? Why? Did they make a deal for some Nokias?
Again, trolling, that which you so hastily bash. Their phones are going to suck because of the aforementioned reason. Note that nothing profound has been shown at CES in their favor as far as devices go and the last good exclusive they had was a rehashed HD2.

Do you know anything before you open your mouth, or are you just that dumb? They have the Iphone 4s, the SGSII and the Gnex...I think that is a pretty good selection. As for trolling, that was a legitimate question. If their phones are going to suck...they must be nokias...

I clearly stated, "exclusives." Though I suppose with your boundless rage towards me you neglect the opportunity to review valid points. I suppose that if you want to discredit Nokia, that's your call. My phone is not measured by it's processor, but by it's efficiency, speed, and build quality.

They will always have your evo exclusives. Your views on business are absolutely horrible. You believe everything you read on the internet. Have you ever came up with an original idea? Im guessing no. Well, I guess buying a $500 phone for a 1 year old doesn't make you the smartest though, so it is to be expected.
Yup, just attempt to attack me personally rather than put forth a valid point. I'm used to it by now, and I could probably do it faster on a WP7.
This review screamed "apple fan boy" from the start. Smdh at so many android haters in the world. Especially one who works for a irrelevant news outlet

First of all who is "examiner.com"? Secondly, the author lost all credibility with me when he wrote: However, you definitely feel the height and length when talking on the phone for a long time. What the heck is the difference between height and length?

He's more than entitled to his opinion but he should write about it intelligently.
Think the author of this article still drinks from a sippy cup, and needs to be led places, because he obviously has no thoughts of his own and is hand fed his knowledge from his mommy.... LOL... that or his IQ is very low.
All kidding aside this was so funny. I always love the apple fanbois.
I had the first iphone (before android was out), and I was part of the guys that was hacking it at version 1.02 of IOS, and figuring out jailbreaking and such.
I have owned Macs since the early 90s, but the iphone in my opinion is a kids toy, compared to Andriod based phones (much more customize-able, and "hack-able")
From the author of the article, "Fabio, any dual-core processor is outdated. The US version uses a dual-core processor."
I wonder if he even knows that his iPhone is outdated now.

Ummm... Because anyone can call themselves a blogger and publish what they want?
ick!
I'm fed up with apple BS. I just had an argument this morning about android and ios with one of my close friend's who's also in IT. I'm an android fanboy but i can clearly say without any hesitation that apple does make great products. I had an iphone4, an ipad, and an apple tv. Good stuff. As much as I like their stuff, I don't think it's necessarily better; Just different. I like having a choice. I've been with android since day one and know that android is just as capable as any ios device, and in some cases more capable. I love than I can get a phone in any size shape or color from any carrier. Apple people think that's bad for some reason.
Ever listen to any of their presentations? They sound like this.
"70% of apple users upgrade to the latest version of our OS 100% more than any other OS. Today we're announcing that everyone can get the latest version for only... $20"
Does that make any sense to you? They actually said something like this at WWDC2012. Every one of their slides and charts has all sorts of skewed information and apple sheep eat it right up. Like when they say that the ipad has over 200k apps designed for it, then they diss android. But they don't mention that every single android app since ICS built for both phones and tablets. Nah they leave that part out.
Apple gets praised for selling OS updates for $20.
Windows gets slammed for giving people service packs for free.
Apple gets praise for updating it's last two iphones, but google gets slammed for only upgrading their last two and not the every other manufacturers phones. It seems unfair, and simply childish at this point trying to talk to apple people. God (for those who believe in him/her) could come from heaven and say that Android is really better, and apple people would still deny it.
This writer should be ashamed of himself for not only drinking the cool-aid, but for letting it skew his review and putting out bad information to consumers.
just left a nice comment under the name LearnGadget

What? Really? So the phone uses GPS 24/7 now?

Yeah that guy is a tool that doesn't know what he's talking about.
That article is funny, he's obviously clueless.
He comments later, "any dual-core processor is outdated."
This one is pretty funny too, not as bad but some of the claims are really biased-sounding.
It's at gadgetreview . com, can't post links...
"Compared to the Galaxy S II, the newer Galaxy S III looks plasticy and somewhat poorly built. The back panel is a single bendable plastic glossy slab, and the front is all display. Compare that with the iPhone, or any recent high-end smartphone, and the GS3 looks like a kids toy from the back. "
"My opinion is that iOS is still the stronger operating system; it’s simpler, easier to manage, and anyone switching between the two OS’s will be better off with iOS in any case."
"Samsung has included some great additions using their user interface, but it isn’t likely going to make the overall OS better than iOS. "
I don't think the guy has even held a gs3. And a simpler os does not make a better os. And any iphone ive used is always cluttered because the home screen holds all the apps.
...
I just sent him this in an email, not because he doesn't like a phone that I do, but because he's an idiot! Lol
Dear uninformed,
Wow is all I have to say! I own several smartphones and one of those is a US Galaxy S3 variamt. I'm well aware that you did not ever actually use one of them before you wrote this review.
If you in fact have used any of them, then you have zero credibility when it comes to technology! Even if you don't care for the phone, which I personally like but there are others I care for more, your conclusions of outdated processor, bad camcorder, and camera is not as good as the s2, are so completely far off from what is obvious to even a smartphone beginner!
Total crap journalism, and absolutely the most uninformed, uneducated, clueless "tech journalist" (if that's your title at this.... Blog Site?) that I have ever layed eyes on!
By the way, we are having a hell of a time laughing our asses off at you in a thread dedicated just for you at XDA!
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.... SELECT A NEW LINE OF WORK!
