Android Now More Popular Than iPhone In US
http://www.youmobile.org/blogs/entry/Android-Now-More-Popular-Than-iPhone-In-US
well i guess we all knew that part but reading on it said this...
In terms of the wider market including feature phones Samsung saw its U.S. marketshare increase from 23.6% to 24.5%. Everyone else saw their marketshare decline, LG losing 0.3% to stand at 20.9%, Motorola down 1.8% to 17% and RIM losing 0.2% for a total of 8.8%.
so why all the hate on samsung phones?

I think MOST of the hate towards Samsung is that they're slow to update software, followed by buggy OS releases, and finally the plastic construction.
I personally think they're making the best hardware out there right now, with some compelling products, as long as you can someone else (like Google or the dev community here) to make the software "right."

Can't wait till the Verizon iPhone comes out next week. The competition between Android and iOS is going to REALLY heat up and will result in much better phones for us

I actually prefer the plastic construction. Using a metal touch-screen phone when the temperature is below freezing is not comfortable.
Also, what would happen if I dropped the phone? The Samsung frame and exterior parts would break, but by doing so less shock would be transmitted to the expensive parts inside. Which is how a motorcycle helmet works.
The worst thing about Samsung is the software. My I5700 will never be "right". A few dozen OS updates have been made, but nobody knows why, because none of the big bugs were ever fixed. Good hardware, lousy software.
I think it would be fair to say that 2010 was the year for Samsung, and judging by CES, 2011 will be the year for Motorola. And as far as the Verizon iphone goes, if what I heard is true (which would be a dumb move on Apple's part) and the iphone 4 will be coming out in the next month or so, Apple better have figured out their antena issue or there will be some very unhappy Verizon customers out there.

Not sure I agree that 2011 will the year of Motorola.
Samsung's announced (and released already) some compelling products for 2011. It's not just ALL about CPU speed or # of cores.
Granted it's a matter of preference, but in my opinion, no one's come close to Samsung's SAMOLED screens yet (iPhone 4's close, but not there), and SAMOLED Plus screens should be even better. With LTE phones and some really smart tablet designs, Samsung certainly going to be competitive.
Personally, I don't see myself with anything that's not SAMOLED or better...display size and appearance is most important to me these days, as long as the CPU/GPU are fast enough for my apps. So far 1ghz single core is there. Dual core not interesting until there's a killer app I need that requires it. Maybe in 20102...?

Who knows, Samsung might end up being on the top again this year depending on what announces they have at Mobile World Conference. I doubt Motorola has anything else up their sleeves if they are attending that conference after seeing what they announced at CES.
True, I tell everyone that samsung makes the best hardware in the mobile market. When I bought my Captivate, one of my iphone friends was sorely tempted to switch to the Captivate. So, software issues aside, Samsung hardware is the best out there at the moment. But the Atrix looks like it's going to be a serious piece of hardware.

I highly doubt thats true, the iPhone is only ONE phone.. whereas Android is coming out from all directions. There's a new android phone/tablet/whatever coming out every other month, iPhone is coming out.. like every year or two?
I never even considered iPhone to be a competitor in terms of hardware.

You don't think that the iPhone being released on America's 2nd biggest carrier will affect competition? Well here's a humbling fact:
Nobody who posts on XDA affects smartphone sales. We are a negligible fraction of smartphone users. You know who use smartphones, especially iPhones? Every teenager in America. Every college student in America. Mothers. Fathers. Grandparents. Everyone outside the small walls of XDA.
All of those people will perk up when then iPhone is released on Verizon. And the added competition will, necessarily, drive innovation for Android. That's a Good Thing.
You may not consider the iPhone as anything comparable to Android, and of course myself and everyone else who has the will to create an XDA account would agree, but the rest of the world does. And they're the ones that drive innovation, not us.

So true. When I see all the great phones being released in 2011 with crazy amazing specs, all I can think is, "too bad they will all be crippled by the manufacturers and carriers."
Oh well, this Nexus S will ride me through all the guinea pig dual core phones of 2011.

Jokes aside.. the iPhone can be consisered as a competitor only because it is just another smartphone like all the Android phones out there.. when it comes to advancement the Android will always be ahead because of the sheer number of devices being available.. hetherto the iPhone is the iPod of the mp3 players..and its considered a trendy brand all teenagers must have until they grow up and get influenced by us veterans

I think you're making it out to be a bigger deal than it is really. Yes I'm sure there will be decent VZW iphone sales, but most of the people who want an icrap already have one by now.
I really doubt there's even 10m icrap lovers out there on VZW that couldnt make the switch because they could get any service from ATT. 10m additional icrap users is nothing when android is has 300k new activations every day.

Now what does he mean by better phones?
- Better Hardware? I highly doubt it, like I said previously; iOS is only one phone and releases every one or two years (Whatever it is) whereas Android releases one every other week. iPhone may beat the competition and have that "king" for a couple of months, but it is just a matter of time until something else takes over. iOS is only one phone, Android is attacking iOS from all angles (Motorola, Samsung, LG, HTC, and more).
- Better Firmware with newer updates? This may be on Apple's side due to Android's fragmentation but that is mainly due to manufacturers and the carriers. But since this is the Nexus forum, we're pretty much guaranteed to have the newest and latest Android version.
How exactly is this competition? There's a saying that says, "quality over quantity." Just because Lady Gaga is getting more sales than another artist doesn't mean that she's a better artist. Or another example is, just because more people use Windows.. does it necessarily mean that its a better OS than Linux? No. It just means that it is more "mainstream," it necessarily doesn't mean its better. For as I care, I can really care less about the numbers that iOS is selling compared to Android. This is pretty much Mac vs. Windows revisited but on a more portable battlefield.
And I highly doubt that Verizon would stop marketing the "Droid" just because they have the iPhone. Droid has been a highly successful marketing term for them.
Nobody who posts on XDA affects smartphone sales. We are a negligible fraction of smartphone users. You know who use smartphones, especially iPhones? Every teenager in America. Every college student in America. Mothers. Fathers. Grandparents. Everyone outside the small walls of XDA.

Stereotypical much? That's like saying every teenager in the U.S. has a iPod. Yeah the majority has one but does it mean every single one of them have a iPod? No.
And XDA has a iPhone section, just saying.
Also.... as another backup statement, since iPhone is not exclusive to ONE carrier in Europe.. they have multiple carriers (Vodafone, T-Mobile UK, etc)... take a look at their perspective. Take a look at who's striving there, Android or iOS?

lol, apple has two of the top ten fails and they're one of the most respected tech companies, if it were top 11 maybe the ipad sans camera would be on there.
The only reason the nexus one is on there is how they marketed it, suppose you can also thank AT&T for later selling it without subsidizing it (589.99 for a phone?). I had forgotten about the whole Kin thing honestly. Also the 3D's tv as a failure.... not surprising, way too expensive for what you're getting.
IMHO the iphone 4 is an awesome device, for many reasons. I personally had an iphone 4 but ATT drove me to the wall and jumped ship. Currently I have an Evo 4g and it is also a great device, both having its strengths and weaknesses. **Flame Suit On**
Can't disagree with this list.
Although between Apple's ability to put a spin on things and their customer base being blind to anything negative when it comes to apple "Antennagate" wasn't as big of a deal as it should have been.

What a nonsense post. iPhone is one of the most incredible success stories in modern history. The fact that most of us choose to use an Android device right now doesnt mean we have to go around spewing sour grapes. What Apple has done with iOS is just as amazing as what Google has done with Android. Both OSs can learn from each other and prosper side by side.

Here's the thing, the article is not thinking as if it was an Apple lover.
It's being non-bias.
What happened with the iPhone 4 is ridiculous.
If any other manufacturer would have slipped up like that they would likely be removed from the world.
But because Apple has the ability to put a spin on things and because Apple owners tend to be...well... they'll buy into whatever Apple says...so drones...it wasn't as big of a disaster as it WOULD HAVE BEEN [and should have been] if it wasn't Apple.

So? Because Apple has been successful enough at building their brand that a minor issue which effected way under 1% of users (.55% of iPhone 4 users complained about it, 1.7% of iPhone 4s were returned for any reason) failed to significantly damage their sales what? It isnt fair? Please. Apple hasnt always been the darling of the tech world. They fought, innovated and built their way to where they are now after hitting a low point that could easily have finished them.
"antennagate" was a tempest in teapot built up to drive blog traffic. It just isnt an issue in the real world for the average user, as sales numbers prove.
Google could learn a lot from Apple, they have suffered unfairly in the past because they bungled their handling of PR problems and completely failed to sell users on their new products initiatives. Think Apple would whiff the launch of something like Google TV or Buzz?
Just to say it again, we can be Android fans and choose to use Android devices without being haters. Apple is a great company that does a lot of things very well. The fact that I prefer the phones from another company right now doesnt change that.

You're kinda not looking at this whole "antennagate" the right way. If I can remember correctly, it messed with the signal when gripped a certain way in the person's left hand. Now having said that, the stats you posted are true, but let's look at the big picture here...left hand. If that were reversed and it messed up when gripped with the right hand, story would've been different; which is why it all blew up. Not that many complaints came from it as expected because not that many people are left handed, but the fact that the problem could be demonstrated on tons of devices is the bad part, and thats why they are saying it was a failure. Now looking at iPhones as a whole, no, it's not a failure. But that article isn't looking at the past, it's looking at the device Apple is pushing right now. And if they were looking into the past, then the iPhone 4 would really look like a failure since the other iPhone's didn't have that problem. It's easy for some people to overlook that problem because now everyone basically just texts and emails or uses bluetooth for calling..but still, since that problem was there in the first place, that's kinda sad. A phone should be able to make a call without dropping it.

Your assumption that because I like Android I hate Apple is silly.
I have hated Apple before I ever owned an Evo/Android phone.
I don't like Apple for these reasons listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10148741&postcount=30
I hate Apple.
They block apps because THEY don't agree with whatever the app is.
They blocked google voice for a year and a half because it was google.
They blocked a magazine app because it had more Android articles than IOS.
They blocked a wikileaks app.
They try to sue because people are "jail breaking" their phone that they purchase and so Apple tries to make it so that you simply buy a license for their products....yeah...**** you apple. If I would have own any of their products when I heard that they would have been sold immediately.
Only four examples of a million.

I also take great exception to you suggesting that apple is a "great company"
I have never owned an Apple product and I'm proud to say I never will.

My hatred of Apple has NOTHING to do with my owning an Android. I have an Android becuase I hate Apple. I use to have a Motorola Brick phone too. I don't hate bricks now.
I think they have done some very shady things and that is why I don't like them. They are what MS was to me several years ago.

I think a lot of you guys have become really sensitive and take your phone too personal. Its a friggin phone - get on with your life.
I don't hate Apple, in fact I think their user interface was revolutionary at the time.
My problem is that many people act like the iPhone is the genesis of smartphones. The reality is that Windows Mobile still had more features when the iPhone was first released (cough...multitasking and a huge software base). Unfortunately windows mobile was just plagued with a crappy interface.

I would sell the iPhone 4 if you are comfortable with an x10. A sealed box will sell for a good price. Then you can wait for the SGS2. The iPhone 5 probably won't be announced until June, which is quite a while. I wouldn't buy anything right now though, since the stuff on the market right now isn't really an upgrade from what you already have.

Most of the stuff you will get here is android fans, but in reality apple has much better hardware than anything on android (my opinion). The OS, well they are pretty similar, if you want your phone to just work apple all the way, if you want to customized then go android.
Just be aware that iPhone can also be customized by jailbreaking.
I have a 3GS that's almost 2 years old and it's working as good as day one.

Reality and personal opinion don't mix sadly. Anyway, depends what you mean by "hardware". Apple A4 was Samsung's Hummingbird, just with a lower clock and a slower GPU. Overall build quality may be better... until it falls and you're left with cracked glass all over the phone. Antennagate? Not sure about the much better now...
Software and integration is another story, that's where iOS definitely wins.

It's all relative to needs.
Sure, the iP is a pretty piece of hardware backed up but the brand fandom. everyone has it, everyone wants one.
As far as jailbreaking goes, the cat and mouse update/jailbreak game with apple gets old really fast... Every update of iOS patches something that dev team fixes and then they fix it and apple releases another update and .... you get the idea.
Jailbreaking every two months, playing with the unlocked baseband and risking ending up with a brick is no fun.
Personally I've decided to move away from every apple product, because apple doesn't necessarily have the greatest most advanced hardware, what they do have is massive marketing department with lots of talented people to make people want those devices (just look at apple product placement in the media).
In the end, it's a matter of usability, preference and what works for the individual; at this point in time, the iP4 is clearly outdated compared (hardware wise) to the devices coming out right now or in the coming month (Atrix, SGS2, etc...) and they will have had 6-7 months to prepare and get the iP5 design ready and produced by June-July-Sept with better hardware based on what they saw coming out from the competition at the CES and other events. By the time apple is done promoting their revolutionary iP5, Motorola, HTC and Samsuncg will have come up with somthing better based on the iP5 specs...
The cel phone war will never end, it will be the eternal peeing contest between large companies. As far as the consumer is concerned, we're just trapped in a vicious cycle we have created.
For me what weighs in, is the ability to have full control of my device. Therefore iP is a no go and thus a lesser device in my perception. Atrix was on top of the list until the Moto fiasco with the signed bootloader. The remaining option is the SGS2 depending on how easy it will be to update without relying on Samsung to do so.
On a side note, I've been using a iP3G since it came out and haven't upgraded the device, so I've been with it for almost 4 years; and seeing all these new android devices coming out everyday makes me hate it more day by day.
Android, for me, offers many more possibilities of growth than iOS will ever be able give me. I am not limited by a company as far as what I can do with the hardware that I hold in my hands.
I would rather take an operating system that is designed to let me do anything to it per my own needs and requirements than one that is marketed to the masses for mass consumption. There is nothing wrong with either, it is all preference. Apps fail to interest me as I have a busy and fun enough life to not care about too many of them In fact many people around me have pages of apps which i rarely see being launched except for the odd score checking/email app.
There is no point in comparison of the phone. In fact I would like it if Android makes its own features and chooses its direction instead of following iOS.
Well I would say to just use for a little while and see if you like it. If you do, great. If you don't, sell it.
Either way you could sell one now or keep both and sell both layer then the SG2 comes out.

I love it when people say to get the iPhone if you just want it to work aand Android for customization.
If I do recall, I have never had any problems installing anything from the market on my phone; and everything else aalso just "works" along with more customization.

If they want more customers they need to offer more choices. It would be a lot harder of a decision for me if they offered a 4+ inch screen.

Well Steve was quoted as saying 4" mobile phones are like SUV's, who wants a 4"+ phone?
So, if they did come out with one, Steve would be a big ass hypocrite, which wouldn't be the first time.

Haha. Well he wont ever have my for a phone then ..
I wouldn't own an suv either. I tried to surf the web on an old hero... and it was painful (screen wise)
Our phones are mini personal computers. We like them to be as big as we can fit in our pockets while not being too bulky or heavy!
Also, regarding Steve Jobs making that comment, well, funny that he says that when his huge success right now is in the tablet industry and you see trendy Apple fanatics carry their iPad/2 everywhere they go! So, if a phone over 4" is an SUV and no one would want that, then the product fueling Apple so hard right now is, what, a jet?
Regarding what Steve jobs has said, I think the Evo is the perfect size.. I am a big guy also + I'm wearing carpenter jeans all the time. Still have plenty of room left in my pockets XD. Hell make the next evo after the 3d have a 4.5" screen just because they can.
One thing to consider is that Apple is not losing users (in fact, its still gaaining a lot of users), it just isn't growing as fast as Android. Some of you are talking about display size and features but like Windows the most likely answer is that Android is sweeping up the low end market. One of the most successful Android phones is the LG Optimus - a free or nearly free Android phone. I even bought two of them for relatives.

Well, if their market share is shrinking to 15% by the end of the year, you bet they are losing users now. In the most recent report, they gained only 0.2% and that was including the Verizon iPhone launch, so w/o that, they were definitely in negative territory.

I think the assumption in your statement is that there will not be improvement in their hardware -- larger screen, dual cores, etc. -- or that a CDMA/LTE version doesn't hit Sprint. And that a GSM/LTE-or-HSPA+ version isn't made available to T-Mobile types. As an OS, Android may rule the roost in terms of market share, but with 30 different manufacturers making an Android device, that's not hard.
The rumors of the demise of the iPhone, I believe, are quite premature.

Apple has around 7-10% of the desktop/laptop market, yet it's one of the most profitable laptop/desktop OEMs. The same to a larger extent applies to smartphones. Android is almost certainly growing because of low to mid end offerings, variability (large screens, keyboards) also surely play a part but its obvious that apple has a strong hold on the high end market.

Of course. It has nothing to do with a preference towards a different OS or premium hardware build. Very few laptops come close, if at all, to a Macbook's build (materials, design, trackpad, keyboard, display, etc.). It IS expensive and you can definitely get more power for less, but you wont find the same build or a 100% stable build of OSX. Some people have different preferences but of course you think all of them are zombies - even the super techy, much better informed people I work with everyday.

I have found the real reason that Samsung was ans is late to updating their phones to the latest or next to latest versions of Android Fryo and 2.3/2.4 Gingerbread.... Its simple Apple has Samsung as a supplier for the Iphone's A4 cpu and its Retina Display (which is probably a version of the Galaxy S screen super-AMOLED. Thus I found this..."Apple is quite annoyed by Samsung's fast rise in a market which it virtually created," James Song, an analyst at Daewoo Securities, said on Friday." This would make perfect sense since Samsung does not want to offend one of its chief customers.
Could this be the reason? Stay tuned news at 11pm, updates as they happen...
I really hate apple. Jobs should get an award for single handedly making people technically dumber. Most iphone users can barely navigate itunes let alone a pc. I hope the iphone 5 bombs and sammy outsells it with the galaxy S2. I will never be able to use another handset if it doesnt have a samoled display.

I don't believe they make their lcd's and its not a super amoled display on the iphone4. This is not the reason sammy is late with updates. The reason they're late is they suck at software(getting better tho) and all the individual carrier crap they have to add in or make provisions for.
FYI; samsung and apple look to be bitter rivals now.

Not true. The main reasons we live in such a smartphone driven world today is blackberry, motorola, and, honestly, windows mobile. The idea that we could have full keyboards (since texting had become so commonplace), keep an array of files with us, and music on our phones intrigued a large portion of consumers. The first true "turning point" in my opinion was when the motorola q was released. It was the first smartphone geared towards the normal consumer and not businessmen.
You have to give motorola credit. While they may suck at a lot of things, they have generally been "pioneers" in that they change consumers minds for them. The razor introduced the idea of ultra slim phones, the Q introduced a phone that's more than a phone, and the Droid made the general (unaware) public aware of the android OS. If anything, apple has been following their lead. Just with better marketing and implementation lol.

No he didn't. The only reasons apple is where they are is because of the app store and how ridiculously easy it is to use that pos. Apple didn't invent **** or bring anything new to the table. They just released an easy to use phone in a market that was flooded with ****ty winmo phones. Stop spreading that hoopla about jobs and apple "inventing". Its the reason why android is speeding by and apple wont catch up unless they finally revise ios and make it more functional... but at that point they'd be copying off android wouldn't they? There's nothing new under the sun. Its never what you do but how its done.

It's not Samsung that holds up upgrades. It is U.S. carriers. International Samsung phones get their upgrades months before ours.
Considering Apple is sueing sammy, and sammy is sueing apple, I venture to guess apple is looking to expand its suppliers.

I Hope they both get FK'ed over... honestly Apple has made people retarded.
and Sammy has continually screwed it's customers over with updates...
i Just wish there was a company that cared about its customers instead of profits... But then again that'll never happen.
There are two reasons why Samsung was so late with updates.
1. There was a huge bug in in their bloatware with Froyo that made it difficult to make a non-buggy port.
2. The carriers are the ones who send out our updates; for all we know we could have gotten it months before if it were an international carrier supporting our updates.

Its because its a new processor and now that they have the basic framework pretty well mapped we should now start seeing updates much sooner once they are released. But then again I could be wrong and be creating another unfounded rumor like op is doing.

well read the link to the article. From a business stand point would you want to tick off one of your biggest customers? I think that apple is not the best thing on the face of the earth. They are just good at marketing to a select group of people. I do think that Apple told Samsung to slow the updates and which as a up side would give samsung money from people purchasing more phones off contract from carriers.
ok..first of all as stated..the IPS-LCD in iphone 4 is not made by samsung..its made by LG...also...Samsung does not make Evo screens either...
There is also no one to offend..Apple's strategy revolves around making big checks to companies with latest tech to make shortages for competitors..Samsung on the other hand wont have shortages as they can make their own...
Also, there has been no delay on 2.3/2.4..it came out in standard time on the international Galaxy S..just because google released Gignerbread 4 month ago did not mean it was ready for the public...if you follow trend of Nexus One and Nexus S..it seems like it takes around 4 months for it go rom developer phone to first consumer phone...
And as for Froyo delays...most of it was US carriers fault...

Apple had nothing to do with it. The screen for the iPhone 4 is made by LG, by the way. Samsung has Apple by the balls because they are their second-largest part supplier behind Sony, so no. Samsung and carriers are to blame for neglecting their customer-base. Google has now made a new clause in their manufacturer contracts that says Google has to review any UI customizations a handset maker puts over Android before they will give them early access to their source code. This means no more carrier and manufacturer drag-ass or excuses for grossly neglected software updates to customers. Google will simply make the handset maker's life hell as well as revoke their competitive edge in beating others to the market with the latest version of Android. It's a round-about way of making handset makers like Samsung fall the **** in line and stop screwing around with this "fragmentation" crap.
Don't know how accurate this is.

And from each generation of the Galaxy S series, they've always gotten significantly better.
Hopefully iPhone 5 doesn't take over, but I know that they won't stand a chance against the S3.
Apple must be sitting back watching all of this thinking that they better pull something extraordinary out of the bag. Apple will no doubt be suing the pants off Samsung to coincide with the release of the S3.
I'm buying it on the release day, but I haven't pre-ordered it.
Wow, some of you really need to relax with the hate.
Honestly, do you want to know what the absolute best scenario is? For Apple to come out and blow the doors off of the GS3. Why? Competition. Without it, we wouldn't even be here to begin with. The SG1 doesn't exist without the I-phone. If Samsung has no competition, why exactly should they strive to improve?? They definitely wouldn't. So stop rooting for either one of them... and start rooting for your pocket.
At the end of the day, neither of them really care about you. So stop "celebrating" like you have something tangible to gain. You don't. You're merely a statistic. End of story.
I wonder how many of us have pre-ordered from different places? And not only that, people have pre-ordered both variants just in case of delays, and all memory sizes just in case.
So 9 million could well turn into only an actual 4.5 million phones based on colour alone.

Absolutely,that is true.
First, I think this is a bunch of hype and probably overly exaggerated. If there were 9 million pre orders, wouldn't you expect just a little more people on this forum. Both the htc one x and gs2 forums on xda seemed to be more populated before their releases than this forum. Also, I know I live in the U.S. were the phone technically wasn't announced yet, but I only know of one person maybe two outside of the online forums that even knows about this phone. When the iphone 4s was announced almost everyone I knew was talking about.
On the apple talk, did apple ever have a global release? I am pretty sure apple preorder numbers are only on U.S. based customers but I could be wrong.
because this forum represents <1% of users. and people come here after release looking for softmods.

The "pre-orders" are from carriers and resellers and are stretched out over a year. With the SGS2 selling 20MM copies to not have 10MM pre-orders for the SGS3 would be shocking. Samsung UK's said customer pre-orders are "in the thousands." But the UK carriers all confirmed it's the most pre-ordered device they've sold.
To put the SGS2's success and SGS3's potential in perspective, here's some statistics. In 2011 there were 488MM smartphones sold worldwide. Samsung sold 20MM SGS2's. That means the SGS2 made up 4% of 2011 global smartphone sales. There were 54MM iPhone's sold which represents 11% of the market. So 85% of the world bought something other than the two most hyped and recognized smartphones on the market.
And comparing the SGS2 against Samsung's total sales is interesting. They sold 90MM smartphones in 2011. With 20MM SGS2's sold, 78% of the smartphones they sold weren't SGS2s.
If the SGS3 doubles in sales (which is lofty) over the SGS2 it'll still be behind the iPhone (which itself will grow in sales) and have 8% of the market in 2012; meaning 92% of smartphone buyers will buy something other than the SGS3.
Samsung’s numbers are impressive and they and Apple share 90% of mobile device profit between them. But clearly the sun doesn't rise and set based on a single device; no matter how good it is. There's a reason for the Galaxy Y and One V which will outsell the SGS3 and One X by a large margin.
love the S3 But
There is always going to be a debate between apple and samsung, but I for 1 believe in the competition aspect of it also, I just hope that apple comes out with something that is going to challenge samsung and vice a versa the only winners here r us
