Exclusive Scoop!!! The Real reason Samsung was & is late with UPDATES! - Epic 4G General

I have found the real reason that Samsung was ans is late to updating their phones to the latest or next to latest versions of Android Fryo and 2.3/2.4 Gingerbread.... Its simple Apple has Samsung as a supplier for the Iphone's A4 cpu and its Retina Display (which is probably a version of the Galaxy S screen super-AMOLED. Thus I found this..."Apple is quite annoyed by Samsung's fast rise in a market which it virtually created," James Song, an analyst at Daewoo Securities, said on Friday." This would make perfect sense since Samsung does not want to offend one of its chief customers.
Could this be the reason? Stay tuned news at 11pm, updates as they happen...

I really hate apple. Jobs should get an award for single handedly making people technically dumber. Most iphone users can barely navigate itunes let alone a pc. I hope the iphone 5 bombs and sammy outsells it with the galaxy S2. I will never be able to use another handset if it doesnt have a samoled display.

I don't believe they make their lcd's and its not a super amoled display on the iphone4. This is not the reason sammy is late with updates. The reason they're late is they suck at software(getting better tho) and all the individual carrier crap they have to add in or make provisions for.
FYI; samsung and apple look to be bitter rivals now.

i am an android lover but one could also say that Jobs was so smart that he made it possible for companies like Samsung and HTC to become bigg sellers in this market that Jobs created. Like the super villains in moves Jobs may have created his own enemies...

I don't think that has anything to do with it.

samsung makes a lot of parts for a lot of different cell phones and non samsung related products. I do know samsung makes some htc screens, ie. Incredible, evo, ect....

Not true. The main reasons we live in such a smartphone driven world today is blackberry, motorola, and, honestly, windows mobile. The idea that we could have full keyboards (since texting had become so commonplace), keep an array of files with us, and music on our phones intrigued a large portion of consumers. The first true "turning point" in my opinion was when the motorola q was released. It was the first smartphone geared towards the normal consumer and not businessmen.
You have to give motorola credit. While they may suck at a lot of things, they have generally been "pioneers" in that they change consumers minds for them. The razor introduced the idea of ultra slim phones, the Q introduced a phone that's more than a phone, and the Droid made the general (unaware) public aware of the android OS. If anything, apple has been following their lead. Just with better marketing and implementation lol.

No he didn't. The only reasons apple is where they are is because of the app store and how ridiculously easy it is to use that pos. Apple didn't invent **** or bring anything new to the table. They just released an easy to use phone in a market that was flooded with ****ty winmo phones. Stop spreading that hoopla about jobs and apple "inventing". Its the reason why android is speeding by and apple wont catch up unless they finally revise ios and make it more functional... but at that point they'd be copying off android wouldn't they? There's nothing new under the sun. Its never what you do but how its done.

It's not Samsung that holds up upgrades. It is U.S. carriers. International Samsung phones get their upgrades months before ours.

Considering Apple is sueing sammy, and sammy is sueing apple, I venture to guess apple is looking to expand its suppliers.
Oh and retina is not amoled, its high density lcd.

This may just be the most ridiculous thing I've ever read on XDA... It would be a little less ridiculous if you had your facts straight.

I Hope they both get FK'ed over... honestly Apple has made people retarded.
and Sammy has continually screwed it's customers over with updates...
i Just wish there was a company that cared about its customers instead of profits... But then again that'll never happen.

There are two reasons why Samsung was so late with updates.
1. There was a huge bug in in their bloatware with Froyo that made it difficult to make a non-buggy port.
2. The carriers are the ones who send out our updates; for all we know we could have gotten it months before if it were an international carrier supporting our updates.
Sent from my Samsung Epic

Its because its a new processor and now that they have the basic framework pretty well mapped we should now start seeing updates much sooner once they are released. But then again I could be wrong and be creating another unfounded rumor like op is doing.

Its because Sammy wants to get people to buy their new phones when they come out. The sgs II

well read the link to the article. From a business stand point would you want to tick off one of your biggest customers? I think that apple is not the best thing on the face of the earth. They are just good at marketing to a select group of people. I do think that Apple told Samsung to slow the updates and which as a up side would give samsung money from people purchasing more phones off contract from carriers.

ok..first of all as stated..the IPS-LCD in iphone 4 is not made by samsung..its made by LG...also...Samsung does not make Evo screens either...
There is also no one to offend..Apple's strategy revolves around making big checks to companies with latest tech to make shortages for competitors..Samsung on the other hand wont have shortages as they can make their own...
Also, there has been no delay on 2.3/2.4..it came out in standard time on the international Galaxy S..just because google released Gignerbread 4 month ago did not mean it was ready for the public...if you follow trend of Nexus One and Nexus S..it seems like it takes around 4 months for it go rom developer phone to first consumer phone...
And as for Froyo delays...most of it was US carriers fault...

Apple had nothing to do with it. The screen for the iPhone 4 is made by LG, by the way. Samsung has Apple by the balls because they are their second-largest part supplier behind Sony, so no. Samsung and carriers are to blame for neglecting their customer-base. Google has now made a new clause in their manufacturer contracts that says Google has to review any UI customizations a handset maker puts over Android before they will give them early access to their source code. This means no more carrier and manufacturer drag-ass or excuses for grossly neglected software updates to customers. Google will simply make the handset maker's life hell as well as revoke their competitive edge in beating others to the market with the latest version of Android. It's a round-about way of making handset makers like Samsung fall the **** in line and stop screwing around with this "fragmentation" crap.

well i guess we all knew that part but reading on it said this...
In terms of the wider market including feature phones Samsung saw its U.S. marketshare increase from 23.6% to 24.5%. Everyone else saw their marketshare decline, LG losing 0.3% to stand at 20.9%, Motorola down 1.8% to 17% and RIM losing 0.2% for a total of 8.8%.
so why all the hate on samsung phones?

I think MOST of the hate towards Samsung is that they're slow to update software, followed by buggy OS releases, and finally the plastic construction.
I personally think they're making the best hardware out there right now, with some compelling products, as long as you can someone else (like Google or the dev community here) to make the software "right."

I actually prefer the plastic construction. Using a metal touch-screen phone when the temperature is below freezing is not comfortable.
Also, what would happen if I dropped the phone? The Samsung frame and exterior parts would break, but by doing so less shock would be transmitted to the expensive parts inside. Which is how a motorcycle helmet works.
The worst thing about Samsung is the software. My I5700 will never be "right". A few dozen OS updates have been made, but nobody knows why, because none of the big bugs were ever fixed. Good hardware, lousy software.
I think it would be fair to say that 2010 was the year for Samsung, and judging by CES, 2011 will be the year for Motorola. And as far as the Verizon iphone goes, if what I heard is true (which would be a dumb move on Apple's part) and the iphone 4 will be coming out in the next month or so, Apple better have figured out their antena issue or there will be some very unhappy Verizon customers out there.

Not sure I agree that 2011 will the year of Motorola.
Samsung's announced (and released already) some compelling products for 2011. It's not just ALL about CPU speed or # of cores.
Granted it's a matter of preference, but in my opinion, no one's come close to Samsung's SAMOLED screens yet (iPhone 4's close, but not there), and SAMOLED Plus screens should be even better. With LTE phones and some really smart tablet designs, Samsung certainly going to be competitive.
Personally, I don't see myself with anything that's not SAMOLED or better...display size and appearance is most important to me these days, as long as the CPU/GPU are fast enough for my apps. So far 1ghz single core is there. Dual core not interesting until there's a killer app I need that requires it. Maybe in 20102...?

Who knows, Samsung might end up being on the top again this year depending on what announces they have at Mobile World Conference. I doubt Motorola has anything else up their sleeves if they are attending that conference after seeing what they announced at CES.
True, I tell everyone that samsung makes the best hardware in the mobile market. When I bought my Captivate, one of my iphone friends was sorely tempted to switch to the Captivate. So, software issues aside, Samsung hardware is the best out there at the moment. But the Atrix looks like it's going to be a serious piece of hardware.

You don't think that the iPhone being released on America's 2nd biggest carrier will affect competition? Well here's a humbling fact:
Nobody who posts on XDA affects smartphone sales. We are a negligible fraction of smartphone users. You know who use smartphones, especially iPhones? Every teenager in America. Every college student in America. Mothers. Fathers. Grandparents. Everyone outside the small walls of XDA.
All of those people will perk up when then iPhone is released on Verizon. And the added competition will, necessarily, drive innovation for Android. That's a Good Thing.
You may not consider the iPhone as anything comparable to Android, and of course myself and everyone else who has the will to create an XDA account would agree, but the rest of the world does. And they're the ones that drive innovation, not us.

So true. When I see all the great phones being released in 2011 with crazy amazing specs, all I can think is, "too bad they will all be crippled by the manufacturers and carriers."

Jokes aside.. the iPhone can be consisered as a competitor only because it is just another smartphone like all the Android phones out there.. when it comes to advancement the Android will always be ahead because of the sheer number of devices being available.. hetherto the iPhone is the iPod of the mp3 players..and its considered a trendy brand all teenagers must have until they grow up and get influenced by us veterans

I think you're making it out to be a bigger deal than it is really. Yes I'm sure there will be decent VZW iphone sales, but most of the people who want an icrap already have one by now.
I really doubt there's even 10m icrap lovers out there on VZW that couldnt make the switch because they could get any service from ATT. 10m additional icrap users is nothing when android is has 300k new activations every day.

Now what does he mean by better phones?
- Better Hardware? I highly doubt it, like I said previously; iOS is only one phone and releases every one or two years (Whatever it is) whereas Android releases one every other week. iPhone may beat the competition and have that "king" for a couple of months, but it is just a matter of time until something else takes over. iOS is only one phone, Android is attacking iOS from all angles (Motorola, Samsung, LG, HTC, and more).
- Better Firmware with newer updates? This may be on Apple's side due to Android's fragmentation but that is mainly due to manufacturers and the carriers. But since this is the Nexus forum, we're pretty much guaranteed to have the newest and latest Android version.
How exactly is this competition? There's a saying that says, "quality over quantity." Just because Lady Gaga is getting more sales than another artist doesn't mean that she's a better artist. Or another example is, just because more people use Windows.. does it necessarily mean that its a better OS than Linux? No. It just means that it is more "mainstream," it necessarily doesn't mean its better. For as I care, I can really care less about the numbers that iOS is selling compared to Android. This is pretty much Mac vs. Windows revisited but on a more portable battlefield.
And I highly doubt that Verizon would stop marketing the "Droid" just because they have the iPhone. Droid has been a highly successful marketing term for them.
Nobody who posts on XDA affects smartphone sales. We are a negligible fraction of smartphone users. You know who use smartphones, especially iPhones? Every teenager in America. Every college student in America. Mothers. Fathers. Grandparents. Everyone outside the small walls of XDA.

Stereotypical much? That's like saying every teenager in the U.S. has a iPod. Yeah the majority has one but does it mean every single one of them have a iPod? No.
And XDA has a iPhone section, just saying.
Also.... as another backup statement, since iPhone is not exclusive to ONE carrier in Europe.. they have multiple carriers (Vodafone, T-Mobile UK, etc)... take a look at their perspective. Take a look at who's striving there, Android or iOS?

Samsung ordered to show its new prototypes to Apple

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ered_to_show_its_new_prototypes_to_apple.html
Hello everyone,
i guess now the S2 will receive some major updates to change the phone software entirely cos of the lawsuit from Apple. The new update already has a new music icon, please read the new above itll explain more.
Samsung has nailed the hardware and i really do hope they can do the same with the software eg touch Wiz which is a terrible UI.
they could have learnt to make something like the sense Ui which is much better.
Apps integration is so important for smartphones to work in harmony, not many phones can do that includng Multitasking and push notifications which are so important. preview widgets could have been improved to give more info to a user without having the need to tap so many times.
Its time for Samsung to bring in some great developers to help them with great UI to nail the market
Apple developers are only human!!!
The topic is a little misleading (the same goes for most of the headlines in the tech press). Apple will not be able to see unreleased Samsung hardware, only the legal firm handling this case for Apple. That means (as mentioned in the article you link to) that Apple's engineers and in-house legal team will not be given access to the unreleased products.
Apple might very well lose the case as well, so I don't expect any drastic changes in the near future as these cases tend to go on for a couple of years.
Would be funny if Samsung terminated their contract with Apple though, think there would be a slight delay to their new products if they were suddenly missing almost all the hardware parts
Maybe this is why the US s2 launch date was postponed?

I dont know why they have to fight with each other rather than working on better software for the user. Probably. The event was cancelled suddenly late last Monday (May 16). The judges ruling came out last Wednesday (May 18). Samsung's lawyers probably had an indication of how the judge was going to rule. Samsung probably figured it was better to delay announcing new products if there was a chance that Apple could win an injunction against their release.
It appears like Samsung has 30 days to provide Apple with the products in question (Galaxy S2, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Infuse 4G, and 4G LTE Droid Charge). Who knows how much time Apple's outside counsel gets to review the products before determining if they want to file an injunction. At this rate, who knows when the U.S. will see the S II...if at all if an injunction is granted.

Apple are probably suing as a tactic to dent Galaxy sales and damage Samsung's rep.

Sense rocked in the early days of Android when the interface was bland and lacked credible home alternatives, but now it sucks big time. Not that I'm a TW4 fan, but it's far less intrusive and easy to bypass so for that reason I'll rather have it.
Back to the topic.... yeah interesting case and without going back in time to decide who did one first I feel the interfaces bear too much of a resemblance.

I agree they need to be careful, but boycott. Never. Apple just SHIFT TOO many units for ANY manufacturer to turn down. (unless it's for logical reasons like they can't meet demand, but i doubt Apple would even go to them if that was the case)
And may I just add, I really hate apple. -_-
Hate their business ethic and I just hate they/he runs the company. (Not going to lie, it's clever and really wise because it brings in HUGE volumes of sales) but it still despise it!
Patent everything them make, sue everyone that has any similarities what-so-ever. Again it's clever but so annoying.

Not sure about profits, but it looks like Apple was responsible for about 4% or 5.6B of Samsung's revenue in 2010. Samsung's overall net income is about 10% of revenues, so Apple probably provides somewhere in the ballpark of $500 million of net income to Samsung.

I have compared touch Wiz and iOS ,Xperia UI,Sence UI.
IMO TouchWiz does looks like rip off from iOS. For example compare clock app , TouchWiz Clock app is exact replica of iOS. Xperia UI,Sence UI looks different. Similarly many other parts of TouchWiz resembles iOS. Even the design of Galaxy S looks very similar to Iphone 3GS/3G. HTC, SE, Motorola phone looks different. But Samsung phone somehow resembles Iphone.

"Never argue with a fool - they will drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience."
^ THAT!
Why did you post this? All it did was piss me off.
1. Samsung made the iPad3s "revolutionary" display. They even project to buy billions in parts from Samsung this year.
2. My friend has an iPhone 4S. And the retina display DOES NOT look better. It's far more washed out and far less saturated. You can not even compare the colors even at stock values.
3. The hardware IS pushing limits. The iPhone 4S' 800MHZ dual-core processor is outdated. And comparing it to the Atrix, which came out March of 2011, it is. Does Joe not know that the One X just came out with a ****ing 1.5GHZ quad-core processor? The screen sizes are much larger, have higher resolutions, deeper colors, curved displays, and lets not forget Gorilla glass. How are they going to release the iPad 3 with a dual-core processor and still charge that price?
4. How is Joe going to talk about the quality of the iPhone? That's absolute babel. Anyone in their right mind would know making a cell phone out of glass and an easily shatterable display makes paying $399.99 for anything not worth while. You drop that four hundred dollar POS? IT'S BROKEN! The back will shatter! The screen will crack! What the hell is innovative about that?! "All manufactures are trying to do is catch up to the quality and hardware" ***** please. Android abandoned that disgusting look and feel loooong ago. We ***** slapped you with no buttons, we ***** slapped you with better hardware, and we utterly raped you with what Android can do compared to primitive operating system. Ubuntu for Android is the perfect example.
5. He misused fragmentation and clearly put invocation where innovation should go. His grammar and punctuation is awful in some spots, and his use of words he doesn't really understand is consistent. And please bro, don't ever jump on us about bashing you for stealing functionality. Apple invented that. Apple invented and maintains backstabbing tactics, and has successfully set back technology years. Please, read this. Because it would take me too much time to explain why Apple is the devil and why Steve Jobs deserves to burn in hell for all eternity.
6. **** jailbreaking! How DARE he compare that to rooting?! How DARE he think that could be anything like it in any way? Android out of the box can install 3rd-party applications. And that seems to be the only thing he could say about that! Android being open-source should be enough to shut him up about that, but because he is clearly so stupid and doesn't know any technological terms outside of the tech blog he must read, he is oblivious the the capabilities of Android. This guy must think Steve Jobs was truly Jesus.
People like this are the blight of the world. The only thing I hate more than Apple are the people using their products. Especially the ones who know nothing about anything technological. Android is the best mobile operating system hands down. Not because it's disgustingly simple and "easy to use", but because it's capable of doing far more than iOS could ever hope to do. Android being open-source allows it to do ANYTHING. Any feature in existence and every feature to be invented can be and will be brought the the Android platform. "From a developers standpoint, there is no comparison in my eyes." Anyone who knows anything about actual development has dumped iOS. Because whether you know it or not, Android has taken over the mobile platform. People have left iOS for cheaper, more durable, more powerful, and all around better platform. So if you want to delude yourself into thinking that iOS and Android are still comparable. go ahead, but you're only kidding yourself.
That....is epic!!! Love it! Sorry for stirring the pot today, but did get some lulz! You guys rock! Good stuff.

And further to Darkie's rant; my buddy jailbroke 2 iPhones (4 and 4S) and both of them bricked. Had to pay Apple iGeeks a fortune to reload lousy OS. I can bring my phone back to Sprint and they don't give a flying rat's ass if its rooted or not.
Well, I hate to anger you guys further, but just got to my computer checking mail, FB, etc. And seen he commented again. I haven't been home for a while, so I have been yet to paste any of your responses there.
This is a long one too, but now I can cut and paste it.....
"It's always the same arguments. Citing 20 different phones, 100 different features, who has what first, etc.... It's the same on both sides of the argument. It all boils down to preference... Both sides will fight tooth and nail to make their points heard. But nobody can deny the fact that no matter what Android OS you're on, or what phone ( HTC, Samsung, Google, Motorola, etc ) they are never compared to each other or previous models, they are all compared to the iPhone. Since that is true, you gotta ask yourself, if Android is so much better regardless of manufacturer, then why? It's not apple or "iSheep" making these comparisons. It's rating companies, magazines, and media making these comparisons. The iDevices do, and always will stand alone. And every new phone will be compared to it. I don't think less of Android users... There is an argument to be made about anything. My personal preference is the iPhone ( being someone who as had and used both OSs and Android on several different platforms ). A lot of argument comes from people, and developers, who have never even owned an iPhone. Maybe just played with one in a store or tooled around on a friends. As iPhone users/developers/jailbreakers, we all agree that Apples restrictions to content is for the most part bull****. So to argue that one is better than the other from a downloadable content standpoint is valid. But I prefer the solid foundation that the iPhone provides. I think the OS is better implemented and that the hardware is superior to any competitor. Since I am able to jailbreak my device, I can install any software I choose, and again in my opinion is better than any content available in the Android Marketplace or on the stock Android OS. The rest is pure marketing. Are there pros and cons? Depends on what you need your device for. The simple fact is, Apples iOS is designed specifically for the iPhone. There are not 50 platforms. Android is open source so any manufacturer can add whatever feature sets they want to the OS. I think that's the biggest downfall, but that's how these companies sell their devices and try to set themselves apart from other manufactures. Android/Google don't care what features they add or what hardware manufactures install the OS on. The manufacturers pay to use the OS. Same with windows phones/computers. There is no quality control other than applications and software extensions have to meet minimum requirements to get licensing. All these manufactures have is themselves to compete with and usually offer up 1 "premium" model thats build to retail markup is ridiculous because for the most part, they use the cheapest commercially available hardware that meets spec sheet, not actual, performance standards. They put it all together in pretty cases with impressive looking feature sets then install a OS that was not designed to work on that particular hardware setup. Then they box it and ship it. That's why the UI is fragmented, but it's got a lot of appealing features that people gotta have. They tend to ignore the performance issues because they got all these bells and whistles on a 4 inch screen. Some features are useful innovations, but they come from developers outside of Google. Google buys software and implements it. Apple is not so open to outside development, but like Android, most of the innovative features were inspired from the developers in the jailbreak community and rewritten by Apple to work with the hardware. The point is, everything Apple is designed and implemented internally and each component is built by vendors to exacting specs. Much more quality control which produces a much more solid device. They have control over everything right down to the batteries and it is all designed with performance and durability in mind, they don't cut corners. The build to retail margins are much different... That's why they are more expensive and carriers are taking a hit selling them at contract prices even tho those prices are 2-4 times greater than Android based phones."

Apple can go f.. itself

http://www.gamenguide.com/articles/2051/20120609/what-samsung-galaxy-s3-users-will-miss.htm
"Apple has claimed that Samsung violated its patent for SIRI, the voice controlled assistant as it introduced "S-Voice" in its newest flagship phone Samsung Galaxy S3 and also infringed the automatic detection of certain types of data such as phone numbers, email addresses and hyperlinks as reported by The Inquirer."
Considering voice recognition has been around for over a decade if not closer to two, it's really one more pathetic attempt by Apple to control the market! I really hope they get some judges in there that have an understanding of technology!
Meh voice control is just a gimmick, not to mention you look like a ****ing retard talking to a machine.
So Apple can take it imo their users are just a bunch of left handed facerolling dribble-sheep anyway

Have you seen the new iphone design samsung should sue them for copying there round shape housing.. lolzz
I'm not gonna go into how bad the editorial but just gonna go ahead and say that Samsung still have time to show them the source code and prove that they didn't infringe anything. The final verdict isn't out yet
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The funny thing about source code, is that if the language is the same, the syntacs will be the same #main() is the same whether you a programing in windows, android or iOS. The proof is only in the comments not the code.
I could rebuild both Siri and the samsung voice system from ground up and there is a very real chance the code will look VERY similar. And when even the smallest program has hundreds of lines of code trying to prove this code or that is yours or theirs is very VERY hard. I personally think apple is trying to stop something that will decimate their iphone 5 before it's even out in market.
S-Voice is using Google's voice recognition API. Doubt Siri uses that.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Well Apple is going at the Gnexus as well, but they haven't stopped the selling in the US, so why are they trying to ban the S3?
The same thing for HTC. Apple was/is trying to go after HTC for the second infringement from the OP. They are going after almost every HTC phone, but are only trying to ban the One Series and not the other phones that they are going after.
Apple is just trying to stop all of these new phone's that will put then to shame when they release the new iCrap 5 lol.
Interesting thread topic if anyone has produced the capabilities of a phone to do just that then Apple is more likely to lead the way .

I'd rather Samsung pull S-Voice rather than risk delaying US shipments. They can add it back later as an update. S-Voice, like Siri, is a gimmick and a waste of time. Not worth going to the mat over.

So true, I think apple is really worried, if I was Samsung I would tell them to stop hassiling us or find someone else to make the amazing screens, they advertised the iPad3 with an amazing one of a kind screen but Samsung made the screen, all apple has every been doing is taking an idea, changing it a little and saying that they created it and ever since Steven jobs died they have run outta proper new things to do and iOS users are noticing that, all my iPhone friends want me to put android on there phone cause whenever apple updates something the system gets slower not faster and they hate the control apple has over them.

No, right now selling phones is Samsung's job. It's not a crusade, it's a business.
I think Apple is just being a sore-loser because Samsung topped Apple in sales. Svoice is not gonna work for me anyway because I am not a natural-born english-speaking person. lol.

It would be nice if Samsung got so much money behind them that they could stop making parts for Apple, think 30 or 40% of the iphone 4 is made by Samsung.
There would be other companies out there...lg? who would step up but the change over would cripple Apple.
Always makes me laugh when Apple boys dis Samsung, if were not for them their phone would not even turn on.

I'm just glad most of these ridiculous patent wars are in the US only and the rest of us can still enjoy imports without too much hassle.
As far as the patents go, Apple would probably patent the fact that their devices use a battery if they could, its stifling competition to the detriment of all consumers. Competition is healthy and stimulates innovation

As someone who values an iOS device over Android I guess I'm going to have the unpopular opinion here. But Samsung released a document that told it's employees how they needed to copy the iPhone. I mean come on. Are people that fanboyish that they're just going to ignore this huge piece of evidence? It's literally a guide on how to best copy the iPhone. As someone who's used an iPhone since they came out, used a Galaxy S, Motorola XT860, Galaxy Tab, Galaxy Tab 10.1, HP TouchPad, HTC One S, and currently using a Galaxy S 3 until the new iPhone comes out, I can easily say that I can see how they would think they're copying features.

Microsoft with Windows, also based on Apple designs. The problem is not the copying of designs (yes its unoriginal, its bad karma, we know) but instead the fact that Apple was able to patent such basic design ideas like a rectangular screen with rounded edges. That technically makes all touchscreen devices and laptop computers infringing devices. The patent office should not have allowed the patents to get approved in the first place. Even though App,e patented the idea, it doesn't mean they were the first to think of it.
Who should hold IP over an idea - the person or persons who thought of it first, or those who filled out the paperwork? Hell, even calculus was thought up by two people at the same time, without knowledge of the other.
Patents like this (if exercised when the devices first started appearing) can only inhibit technological advancement, as it removes competition. Competition fosters growth.

Indeed! At to put perspective further, Apple even copied (Xerox) to get where they are. The game is not "who copied who", but rather who gets the patent first.
Apple is playing a dangerous game of "patenting" and sueing everyone. Making the competition unable to input basic idea in their products, I honeslty think it's a matter of time before Apple Gets sued by everyone they've copied over the years, and they copied a lot of people!

Copying isn't the real issue, it's the patent office. For example one of the design patents Apple was granted was for a rectangle with rounded corners. I think that anyone that's used a tray in a cafeteria knows that this is a silly patent. Yet Samsung had to defend this in court.
The patent office has publicly stated that they are under budget and overwhelmed with patent applications and that they do little research on prior art these days. They have stated that the will grant patents and let the courts sort it out. This is their way of sending a political message to Washington for more money. What results are judgements like we saw last Friday.
I believe that Samsung took a calculated risk when they copied Apple's alleged patents. They were a distant second place in the phone market behind Apple and saw what was happening to RIM and Nokia. Copying Apple not only thrust Samsung into first place, by a wide margin, it netted them $6 billion. That's a good leverage on the $1B judgement.
In any event, Samsung is now the number one phone maker an the threat of these kinds of lawsuits in the future are minimal since the Samsung products are now superior and we find Apple copying Android.
Gotta wonder about the jury.
Does anyone buying a Samsung tab REALLY think they're buying an iPad?
I'm no Apple basher. Even though I've never used any of their products (other than an Airport Express for my WAP), I'm sure they make great products.
But mistaking a Samsung, or any other, device for an Apple device?
Really?

I'm no Apple basher. Even though I've never used any of their products (other than an Airport Express for my WAP), I'm sure they make great products.
But mistaking a Samsung, or any other, device for an Apple device?
Really?
Puuuuuuuleeeeeese!

Yes, the awards by the jury presumed EVERY Samsung phone purchased was a lost sale for Apple. My understanding is that this decision alone is grounds for appeal.
Must Watch...!!!

I've been saying this along, does Apple think its customer base is not smart enough to differentiate between Apple and Samsung products? "Oh NOOOOs I just bought a Samsung when I thought I was getting the iPhone!" The entire design patent is a joke, next lawsuit is against Applebees for using similar name and rectangle tables with rounded edges!
I'm not a fanboi, I just hate stupidity!
