[Q] Defy rom for these issues? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Just got a Defy + some 2 weeks ago. But, unfortunatly, the phone comes with some annoying things. I cant sync with outlook, it only accepts half of the numbers on my sim and if i want to add more i need to upload the info to an motorola account. certain settings arent easy either like the varying sounds for all sorts of functions.
I'd like to change that. Is there a ROM version that deals with my biggest gripes? full use of the sim without haing to upload new numbers and info to motorola (or google) would be great, everything else is ok.
I've read the beginners guide on flashing n such but id like to know if theres a rom for me out there...

Install cyanogenmod 7 rom for defy + based on the beginners guide.
Create a back up before installing the new rom.
Or just try the factory reset.

Qwest Mogul - Need GPS Navi. but am very confused..

Hey all,
Not new to electronics, but am very new to the Mogul and PDA/Pocket PC flashing..
My new Qwest Mogul will arrive tomorrow and, from what I've read, GPS is not enabled out of the box.. I've been reading that I can re-flash the device to somehow enable the internal GPS chip for use with my TomTom Navigator 6 s/w, but can't figure out how exactly to do it, and I don't want to jump into it and brick my new Mogul.
Right now I've got DCD_3.0.1_Qwest.exe which I picked up here (thanks, by the way!) but I'm not sure what to do with it, and (maybe I'm blind, but..) I can't seem to find a tutorial on how to use it with my Qwest Mogul..
If possible, could someone guide me through the steps on getting my Mogul setup so I can use get this GPS chip enabled?
Also, will I be losing any functionality re-flashing my Mogul? Will it 'look' any different?
Again, sorry if I sound like an idiot to you guys.. but I'd like to learn how to do this so I can quit bugging everyone about it haha
TIA,
-mak

should have what you need to know.
Basically:
Run the 2.4 unlocker
Run the official ROM w/ Radio
Flash the dcd_qwest ROM
Thank you very much!
So the instructions you've posted will, in fact, work for the Qwest Mogul to unlock/enable GPS Navigation?

EDIT:
Also, there are some things in that list of 'Removed' items that I would like to keep, such as; Entertainment (Games), Adobe Reader, etc.. I'm assuming the reader can be downloaded from Adobe, but how do I go about getting the games back?
I've now got the following, please let me know if it's everything I need, and what exactly each item is;
DCD_3.0.1_Qwest.exe
dcd_titan_kitchen_3.0.1.rar
titan_SPL_2.40-olipro.exe
As for the radio, it says it's included with the official Sprint ROM, do I use the Sprint ROM on my Qwest Mogul???
Please test it first
Just a recomendation here, but just in case you get a defective one you might want to not touch the ROM for a few days and put it thru the paces. If you get a bad one it is always best to know before messing with it. Afterwards, the 3.01 is a good ROM, but a bit tricky even for the experienced because things are not quite ironed out with the radio and serveral experienced people have injured their units, so I would recomend 'cutting your teeth' on 2.3.2, as it worked really well for me and is pretty cut and dried and the process is stable. In order to get the apps you want like acrobat and games you can use the kitchen and get them in there.
You also won't need the kitchen (i'd worry about that later, to be honest, not good to "cut your teeth" with a kitchen).
You do need the offical sprint ROM, since it includes the radio.
If i recall correctly from when i flashed my friend's qwest 6800, I did this:
olipro's 2.40
Offical sprint rom [when the customizations come up (ie. tap screen to begin), i flashed the DCD 3.0.1 qwest rom.
But it's been a few days so i'd search around here and on ppcgeeks to double check.
As madman said, however, I'd put the phone through the paces for a few days to make sure all is well. Run some benchmarks and such to put a strain on it. If you flash and figure out you have a bad phone...well, you're out however much you paid for it.
Good luck and welcome to the fun
Thanks guys, I think I understand now
I'll keep my Mogul stock for a bit to make sure everything is good, but Qwest offers an exchange for the phone if it's defective, and I have handset insurance in case it gets 'lost'.. so I'll be covered for the future there.
So am I correct to assume I should do the following;
Install titan_SPL_2.40-olipro.exe
Then install Official Sprint ROM w/ Radio (where can I get that, or do I already have it??)
Then, during customizations, shut the phone down and install DCD_3.0.1_Qwest.exe, or an older version that might be less buggy?
If I do the above, it will unlock GPS on my phone? ..in the end, other than some applications, will I lose any functionality (e.g; Text Messaging, WiFi, etc)?
Thanks again,
-mak

that should do it
shouldnt lose any functionality, make sure you write down all the information and such about msid, mdn, etc. Should be a post in here about that somewhere, I can find it for you on here for ppcgeeks if you need.

Here I go...
After reading this thread, I've decided to take the plunge and attempt the upgrade to my Qwest Mogul. Just to verify, I do the following:
Use Olipro 2.4
Flash to Sprint Upgrade
Flash to the DCD 3.0.1
Are there any codes or other information that I am going to need to write down before I start the procedure?
@ mak: yes, that's the right one, sorry, didnt check my links :/
@ reddhanky: read the PPCgeeks thread, dont forget to get the getspc program for your epst unlock code.

The guide you linked to is still a little bit confusing for me, not sure why, but I don't see this part anywhere;

I've taken note on everything else, and the A-Key didn't apply here since it was empty..

EDIT:
> h. click view info and select M.IP, again record these settings.
I have the following;
M.IP Settings
M.IP Default Profile
M.IP Customer Profile 1
M.IP Customer Profile 2
M.IP Customer Profile 3
M.IP Customer Profile 4
M.IP Customer Profile 5
Which one do I want to write down?
Managed to install olipro 2.40
But when I try to install the Sprint update (3.35), I get to the screen where it shows my current version (2.13) and to update to the sprint version... click next then next and the ppc reboots into bootloader, then the program crashes (ROMUpdateUtility has stopped working... A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.). Any ideas? I'm using Vista and have followed the instructions to the letter.
I dont run vista (usually i run linux actually, even successfully flashed in linux, i hate MS). But i'll look and see what i can find.
Is there a way to right click the RUU and choose compatibility as XP maybe?
tried compantibility mode XP SP2
Tried using compatibility mode but wouldn't work.
hmm
so you're in bootloader but can't run the RUU?
or you can't get into bootloader?
Success!
I've finally managed to upgrade my Qwest Mogul software to DCD's 3.0.1. The problem I had with updating to Sprint 3.35 was solved by right clicking on the install icon and setting the compatability setting to XP SP2 for ALL USERS (just changing it for the current user didn't work). Once I made the Sprint update, I entered bootloader mode ran the DCD rom and everything went smoothly.
Now to play with it and see how it works! I will update you guys to let you know how it goes.
Thanks to all, especially DCD and |||Bored|||, for the help with this process. It's been a bit nerve-wrecking for me, especially since I"m a Vista user on top of how few people have the Qwest Mogul. Again, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, and did I say, THANK YOU!
Wow!
My Mogul seems to run much more smoothly (and dare I say it, FASTER) and after loading all my applications I am running at about 20MB free RAM. GPS works! I've been putting this darn thing through its paces and it hasn't crashed yet! So far, the sound through my Motorola s9 headset is working flawlessly...
Happy camper!
Qwest STock ROM
Been searching but can't find the stock ROM for the Mogul. Does anybody know where I can get it (just in case I ever have to send my mogul in for exchange/repair)?
Also, does anybody know if there is a way to put a shortcut on my Mogul to turn the GPS on and off?
Is the Internet working on your upgraded Qwest Mogul?
Reddhanky:
I also have the Qwest Mogul and tried to do the upgrade (as follows):
1) Flashed Olipro 2.4
2) Flashed Sprint ROM 3.35
3) Flashed DCD 3.01_Qwest
However, after the Sprint flash, I allowed that customizations to complete. When I went to DCD, everything worked ...except for the internet/data.
I went back and reflashed the Sprint ROM and just left it there. Again, everything but the internet/data is working (I can send/receive calls and SMS).
What's worse, I tried to downgrade back to Qwest 2.13 but do not seem to be having any luck (the ROM will install, but won't change the radio ROM ... then it just sits at the black HTC splash screen and won't boot).
Qwest is sending me a replacement phone, but before I send this one back (or brick the replacement), I'd like to know how things are working for you...
P.S.: If anyone knows how to downgrade the 3.35 radio ROM back to 1.40/1.47 on a Qwest Mogul, please let me know.
- [email protected]
Back to normal!!!!
Just an update:
I'm managed to get my phone back to the Qwest 2.13 ROM. As it stands now:
Bootloader/SPL: Olipro 2.40
Radio: Titan_1.47
ROM: Qwest_2.13
To get the radio ROM loaded, I had to go the SD route. Specifically, after installing the Qwest_2.13 ROM (and watching it freeze at the black 'HTC' logo page), I found a way to load the old radio ROM:
1) I formatted my microSD card as Fat32
2) Placed the 'titan_1.47.CDMA.nbh' file on it as "TITAIMG.nbh"
3) With the phone powered off (battery removed), I inserted the microSD card and entered the bootloader (held the 'power' + 'camera' + 'soft reset button' ... keeping the 'power' + 'camera' buttons held after releasing the 'soft reset'
4) When the bootloader came up, it prompted to load the 'TITAIMG.nbh' file. I hit the 'power' button as directed. After about 5-10 min, the upload succeeded and I hit the 'soft reset' again to reboot.
Some items to note when it came back up:
1) The MSL code I had no longer worked (I got it after I did the Sprint ROM upgrade). Fortunately, when working with Qwest, they gave me the MSL code
2) The MSID info was way off (not sure if it was because of the Qwest ROM I used, or all the crap I did trying to clear/access the extrom info)
In any case, after resetting some of the EPST info, the phone reset and worked exactly like it's supposed to.
Next Step:
A) Retry the Sprint ROM (this time I have my M.IP password!!!)
&/or
B) Don't play with the Sprint ROM and just use DCD Qwest_3.01
I'll post any success/failures. But rest assured, if you do decide to play around, there does appear to be a way to get back to the beginning

New to the forum and need some help on a few issues

I just recently acquired a HTC Touch Dual and really like it but am having a few issues with it. First, I get tskschedule, repllog, and clocknot notification errors. I've noticed a few threads regarding this issue but haven't yet found a solution so any suggestions would be most appreciated. The second problem is that my battery indicator doesn't seem to be working properly, it stays at 90% and doesn't change regardless of how long I use it for. This caused the phone to die on me in the middle of a conversation. So if anyone has an idea on how to fix either of these two issues, that'd be great.
Hard-Reset or flash another ROM (for example Original HTC Shipped 6.1 or one of the custom ROMs which where offered here in your language).
I bought the device used and unlocked off of eBay, will hard-resetting it keep it unlocked? Also, I'm very much a noob to phones and don't have any clue about flashing roms, what are they exactly and how do I do it? Thanks for the quick reply.
Hard-reset = Original state of the installed ROM
For flashing there are lots of tutorials here (I don't know which is your native language, so I can't post links to some ROMs - I have nearly tested all of them ;-)). Best you try flashing first original HTC ROM. Very easy (you said it's already unlocked), just connect the phone to pc via USB and start the flashingtool. After flashing hard-reset to be sure that all settings and files were restored to original state. That's all.
Don't forget to backup contacts, emails and so on before hard-resetting/flashing! Files on storage-card will be ignored, you don't need to backup them!
im from the us, so my native language is english. do you have any suggestions or links for the better flashing tools? after flashing to my original rom, my phone will stay unlocked right? because it doesn't it'll create more problems for me then i am having right now. thanks again
My native lang is German, so don't worry about my English ;-)
Unlocking is easy, just use hardspl and uspl. I have unlocked my phone only once a time and never had problems after or while flashing (done 15 times or more!). Once I killed my phone with a bad Rom (endless boot-sequence), but you can go into bootloader by pressing "Power-Button + Camera-Button + Reset", so you're always able to flash another Rom and/or could unlock the phone again. Nevertheless I can give no guarantee.
First you could try to download from HTC website. You need the serial-no. which can be found after removing the battery. If you have a look at niki upgrading/flashing forum you'll find also links to the original ROMs.
You can also try the latest WWE/english ROMs offered in this forum at the first 1-2 pages. I tried Gullum's TF3D and Lilly's ROM, both are great and have Manilla included (if you don't like it, the old HTC Home plugin is included in HTC Rom), but I prefer german ROMs. The Niki Project Rom didn't work for me (bugs in Outlook and Office Mobile).
All Roms include the flashing tool, it's really easy to use.
thanks buddy, i'll give it a shot and let you know how it goes
do i have to use a sspl before a hardspl? i have a neon and havent yet found a sspl for it yet. how dangerous is it to use a hardspl? im very new at this so thats why i have so many questions. thanks again
For me everything worked without problems. So I can't say how "dangerous" it is. Most users don't have any problems. To be sure get latest ROM from HTC or your provider, so if any problems occur, you're able to flash the original ROM back via bootloader.
As far as I know you only need to hardspl, but I did sspl first and then hardspl.
I think we need to clear up a couple of things and kind of slow down before you brick your phone
Generally, there are 3 types of locking for these phones.
First, there is SIM locking that everyone is familiar with and locks your phone for use on only one network.
Secondly, we have CID locking - which locks the software\firmware on your phone to that supplied by a particular carrier (for example, if your phone is CID locked to AT&T, you can only flash a ROM from AT&T and not HTC or a custom ROM).
Lastly, and least to be concerned about, is Application locking. I've not heard of any of the touch duals being app locked so we can safely ignore this.
I'm guessing that you meant your phone is sim unlocked in which case, I'm 99.9% sure that none of the ROMs that you can flash will change that.
If yours still has the carrier ROM on it, it is most likely still CID locked so you need to get that off first.
Once that's done, you need to HARD SPL installed (the SPL is the bootloader bit, SSPL is just a "software" version of it that can run but doesn't install anything) If you put HARD SPL on, then it is almost impossible to brick and ruin your phone - but until that is on, don't try flashing custom ROMs or radios etc. as you're asking for trouble.
Also, until you have HARD SPL on, be careful about flashing anything - make sure you don't run apps while it's going and shutdown anything that could interfere. Take basic precautions and you should be fine.
But TBH, if you're new to these phones anyway, and the ROM is right for your carrier, I'd leave it as standard - I personally always find something wrong with the cooked ROMs - missing T9 dictionaries \ SMS not working \ MMS not working \ some other detail that was missed, and I always end up going back to either my stock ROM (T-Mob UK WM6) or the HTC Update (WM6.1) but I don't notice the difference if I'm honest.
People say that whatever ROM they have on is the fastest they've ever tried but in my experience (and I'm on my fifth or sixth generation of WM phone) the difference is marginal at best and certainly not worth the trade off of broken features and multiple reboots.
So, my advice is, by all means, have a mess with other ROMs but be careful, get HARD SPL and make sure you have a ROM to go back to.
Oh, and try a hard reset (or Clear Storage from control panel) after syncing everything up to try and fix your current problems
Cheers,
Smiffy.
i was thinking about trying a hard reset prior to flashing a rom. i cant download a rom from htc and am unable to find one from att (my carrier) so as of now, i dont have a rom to fall back on. i bought the phone used and unlocked, so will a hard reset keep it that way (basically, what will a hard reset do exactly)? i am referring to a sim-unlocked state. the centennial wireless splash screen still shows up so im guessing it is still cid locked? do i need to unlock the cid before hard-resetting it? thanks for the help
The hard reset basically wipes and user-related info and returns it to a factory-fresh state - if one ever starts playing up, this is what should be done before you flash a new ROM, and yes, it will still be SIM-unlocked afterwards. It will alos go through the setup routine again as if you just took it out of the box
There are other places to get the HTC rom from - it's actually quite a good one too as it will set up all the data\MMS settings for your carrier too.
If you're not worried about any warranty, then it's good as a fallback though search on here and see what results other people have with AT&T.
CID unlocking is fairly easy if I remember - been a while since I did it and I have a different model than you. Just make sure anything you use is listed as OK for a neon
HTH,
Smiffy.
so i did a hard reset, and there hasn't been a change in the battery issues. so maybe the battery is faulty? would flashing a different rom help or should i just get a new one? thanks again
If the ROM is at fault, then flashing a better ROM would help, yes. If the battery the faulty, then even a ROM that is much more energy efficient would help little, only delaying the inevitable.
how would i know if the the problem is from the rom or the battery? other than trying a new battery that is
aight, so i got the hardspl for the neon. will that cid unlock my phone cause i cant find a cid unlocker for the neon 300. what would happen if i didn't cid unlock my phone before flashing a new rom?
Nothing would happen. Either it refuses to flash on beforehand, or it'd stop at about 1% from the start not touching your existing rom.
Hardspl is indeed the way to cid unlock your phone, as far as I know.
Please Help!
new problem here, my new battery just arrived a couple of days ago. i inserted it in my phone then let it charge before turning it on. my previous problem was that with old battery, the amber light would start blinking but not remain steady and tell me that my battery was very low then eventually turn off. the new battery's amber light was solid and i left it plugged in for 10ish hours because the light never turned green. i finally turned it on, but eventually the same problem arose. i hard-spled it then flashed a new rom which helped for a little while. the light stayed steady and the battery status rose up until 100%, but the light stayed amber. then if there was any shift in pressure on the chord, the light would start blinking and the battery would immediately read 5%. now the new battery isn't any different from the old one. does anyone have a suggestion? it would be greatly appreciated.
Anybody? Help? At the very least would anyone have suggestions of good repair sites? Thanks in advance

HD2 trying to flash windows 7 stuck 2.10.0000 8g xe

Help
I have been scouring the internet and found so many posts and so many videos but none apply to my situation as of yet. I am trying to flash windows 7 to my hd2 so i can eventually dual boot 7 and android, the various instructions say put on windows 7 first.
I have spl-2.10.0000 8g xe in my tri color screen.
I installed activesync on my xp machine, still could not succeed flashing
then i installed windows mobile center on my windows 7 laptop and then still had no success flashing.
The problem i am having is it is stuck on the htc screen, then magdlr113 takes me to recovery screen and i have to reboot my device.
Various websites say i need to install a leo master radio, but i could not find one for 2.10.0000 8gxe. i found one for other firmwares.
What do i need to do, can i get clear cut response without a one worder, if i need to downgrade my firmware please point me how to do it and where to download the files, please help me so i can get past this, i have unlocked iphones and flashed blackberries, so i am really stuck with this one. Thanks in advance
This order...
flash latest stock rom. If tmous radio version should be 2.15....
Unlock with HardSPL3
flash madgldr
Flash wp7
would give links but on my phone.
Pretty sure you haven't installed hardSPL3...dont remember exactly what it says but should be version hardspl2.08
hey thanks so much for the help, i got it working, the only thing im stuck on now, is issues with the live account, its not letting me access the marketplace, and i cant send mms, i havent found a way to edit mms apn settings, according to t-mobile there is no way to edit mms apn. but i can browse the web
Your issues are talked about in detail all over the forums. A little effort would give you all the answers.
1) live account you must call microsoft and get a code (this will fix marketplace)
2) Go to HTC apps in marketplace and download connection setup. It will fix your mms issues
Hey thanks so much for the help, you guys are really wonderful here, I was a little frustrated cause i was trying to do this for 2 days, it was more of over effort that probably made me miss that. New to windows modding.
did you got the apn fixed and mms by HTC connection setup, please could you confirm.
Yes i got everything working, the mms, works, the carrier settings work, i followed the post about the live services, i called microsoft to get an activation key, i've got a stable twilight ROM installed, i had to downgrade from a 16gb memory card to an 8 GB memory card because my device was resetting itself, and i read on here about the memory card issues, so i re-flashed to another memory card, and did everything above so now everything works really well, im almost nervous to mess with the android dual boot, but i think after a few days or so i will attempt it, once im comfortable with this rom's performance. Thanks for checking back up on me.

After Restore to Factory Setting , every lost

Hi all, I am just depressed, I have tried to root my Defy + , and finaly I found that my version cant be root at the moment, so I decided to Restore to Factory Setting because I think after trying so many root software and failed, it;s better to go back to defult setting, than I am so shock when I see my phone again :
THe lockbar is lost, and also every defult app, and I count have a slide unlock bar, it said I can only make phone calls, and that's it, nothing eles, I cant do anything on it, is that because I have tried so many root softwares so it become liek that?
Or is it just normal and that's solution that I can hae the apps and slidelockbar ?
Please kindly give me some advice, I am so helpless
I have never seen something like that, now that is all off, try flashing it with some stock sbf, i'm sure you will find many of them in the development section, i'm sorry for your loss
Hey, don't panic. Nothing is lost. Just find here proper to your version SBF and burn it with RSDLite.

Noob looking for pointers to help with upgrade process

Hi. Been waiting a while to post this, and playing around based on what I see, but I the last change I made to my phone hasn't worked out too well and I don't think I have enough of a grip on the process. I am an ex-computer 3rd level tech support so I have reasonable skills around computers etc.
I bought an Axon 7 (A2017G) in Germany but it got flooded one day when it went down the toilet pan, literally. So I replaced it with a 128 Gb model from China, not really thinking about the software versions. Of course it came with A2017, and more importantly, no ability got OTA upgrades from Android 6.
So recently I've been having some battery life issues so I've changed the battery.
Following guides here, I've managed to get it onto a newer A2017 version and it has taken an OTA upgrade to Android 7. The build number is B13. The boot loader is still unlocked. But it's not very stable and Google Play service has now stopped, and I can't be doing with the unreliability. And tbh although it worked, I can't remember exactly which guide or what steps I followed to do it.
So I want to put it onto a stock G version, which I think seems to be possible, based on stuff I've read here. I don't think I need root going forwards (once this is done) and I'm looking for the simplest method. Unfortunately, due to the length of time it's been live, this forum really is information-overload and I've been reading for two days now and made loads of notes but I'm not really very clear about what I need to do.
I'm quite happy to find and read the right guides but would be really grateful if someone could take a few minutes to just tell me exactly which bits are essential to be upgraded and what steps I do need to follow. If I am confused I can come back with any queries.
I'd be happy to root the phone if it's felt that is a really useful thing but I'm not really a "power user" and I'm OK with standard.
Also I'm assuming any upgrade would receive any future Android releases OTA (if there are any for this phone), but if not that's not too vital.
Thanks in advance...
Geoff
But regarding your situation: You have an A2017 with A2017G firmware, right? Can you tell us your firmware version?
Would you be fine with Chinese firmware (MiFavor 5.2, B17) or prefer stock+ (G B01/B02, U B12)?
Thanks for the quick response, really appreciated.
The firmware is still A2017 version AFAIK, but I don't know where to check. If I go to the boot loader screen it says ZTE/P996A03_N/ailsa_ii and on the next line 7.1.1/NMF26V/20170912.013327
I'm thinking I'd do the change from A2017 to A2017G to get round the annoying junk which came with the Chinese version, and also avoid the Google Play Services problem I came across. It may not be do-able but I thought I'd read it was.
I guess in addition to telling me the steps, telling me exactly which file versions to use would help a lot. I promise to keep notes!
I don't mind which firmware, so long as it works reliably and so long as I can preferably put a G version on it.
of course it's doable, the thing is that you'll need to unlock the bootloader in order to.
If you had trouble with Play Services then it's most probably on chinese firmware, finding out would be as easy as going to Settings, then About phone
The boot loader is still unlocked from when I managed to do the previous upgrade. That took me quite some hours, and it was more by luck than judgement that I got a result. This time I want to better understand what I'm doing.
Not sure what I'm looking at for the firmware, isn't it the versions I quoted above? But the menus (mostly) are in Chinese at start up, and I had to load Google Play and Play Services from the ZTEYR store so I'm pretty sure it is on Chinese firmware.
So if it is, do I just need to upgrade the firmware then the ROM (is that the terminology?). If so which versions would I use?
Ta
Geoff
EDIT I missed the kernel version - which is 3.18.31
OK so I've spent more time reading. I'm coming to the conclusion that I don't need TWRP and I don't need to update my Chinese bootloader, does that sound about right?
Is it right that all I need to do is
- find a G firmware zip file <<< may have incorrect terminology here, would appreciate a pointer to a valid download as I have many but not sure they are the right type of file
- put it on an SD card named as update.zip
- boot into recovery mode
- choose "apply update from SD card"
And, assuming I have used a stock version, will it then update to the latest version (hopefully Oreo) once it's started?
Do I need to do any formats or wipes anywhere in the process? I already have a backup of my stuff, done with AXON7Toolkit.
And can you recommend a version of firmware to go to, or does it not really matter as it'll update itself anyway?
UPDATE: MiFavor UI is v5.0
OK, so there is no real short easy answer to this.
I've used the updates from ZTE since I've had the phone until I soft bricked it.
Zte offer updates similar to this.
Eg: B06 to B08 or B08 to B09 and B09 to B12
The update has to be done in stages.
Some updates you can copy to the internal SD card then go settings > system > update, your phone should detect the updates and tap install.
Some Zip files can be done the same way after changing the file name to update.zip or Ota.zip depending on the instructions.
Some zip files have the update within the Zip so it needs to be extracted.
Make sure you have the correct version software and correct version for your phone.
After the update is done all the data etc will be still in place unless you reset your phone.
All I can say is research, research, research.
Btw if your bootloader is unlocked some updates will fail.
I hope this helps
PS: you can use the method you described as well, just follow the instructions carefully.
In most cases there is no need to wipe or format unless you are using a custom ROM etc.
Excellent, thanks.
Going back a post or two - I re-installed Google Play services but still have problems. Before a reboot it appears in the list of apps, and Play opens, but the sidebar comes straight in and behind there is a message "Error while retrieving information from server [RH-01]" . After a reboot it is no longer in the list of Apps (even when expanded to include System apps), and Play just opens and closes real quick.
So I found a thread which led me look in Settings in Play Store at the Play Protect Certification, which says the device is not certified. So I downloaded the related app and ran it, which gave me a code which I put in web page then entered the stuff into my phone but still no joy. I suspect this is causing the Play problem and I think it'd be due to trying to use Google product on a Chinese firmware (again I'm not sure my terminology is right - I mean whatever the software is which throws up the initial boot screen).
So I think I need to get off the Chinese firmware at the same time as going to a G version, and I'm even less clear on how to replace the firmware than the rest of the process - what files and how it's done.
Going back to the more recent post (Syberclone), as I have already wiped my phone I'm not concerned about keeping data. I understand about doing this is steps - I hadn't thought of doing it that way but it seems very sensible.
I found a post by Raystef66 with loads of links to software - including A2017X_B15_Universal_Bootloader.zip. Does this replace the Chinese firmware and would it work with all zipfiles? How would I apply it? (I was using Axon7ToolKit the other day and that looks quite impressive).
I am still confused over the different types of files and the naming conventions but it's slowly making more sense. Appreciate all advice.
Thanks
Geoff
Personally I use Edl packages much easier imo.
I use Miflash or Edl tool by @djkuz
I have a bad flash help page that explains the process.
The bootstacks etc are mainly for custom ROMs, if you are just looking a factory firmware, Edl's are much easier to install without worrying about bootstacks, twrp etc.
My last Edl update was from Nougat (Chinese Rom)
To Oreo A2017G I had to factory reset after the install though.
Thatnks. Today I've done a fwe more hours reading, literally. This is taking all my time!!
Anyway I decided to follow your advice and found a full EDL of Oreo, which I applied. (ZTE_A2017V3.0.0B17) and the phone is still working, and I've not lost my apps.
However I still have the problem that Play Services won't run. I've upgraded it, followed a few troubleshooting guides, used different versions ( - should I be using the 64 bit one??) but still no joy. If I could only get that going I'd stick with the Chinese firmware. It is looking to me like it can't sync, though whether that's a cause or an outcome I'm not sure. Not unexpectedly, a number of apps will not run as a result.
I haven't done a factory reset yet, I thought I'd ask here first to see if that is likely to fix it or whether anyone has any better ideas.
Despite the time this is taking I'm enjoying learning and am grateful to you all for the responses.
The play store link "device not certified" will happen when you change a ROM from its original.
So I have an A2017G, when I run any other ROM it will show "device not certified" because the link between the phone and the software isnt in sync.
When I was running the beta Oreo from the Chinese my device always had this issue and NFC does not either usually.
There is a play store app version which will work as it should however the certified is still a problem without a work around.
When I installed the G version Oreo to my device the certification is back.
I'm miss some of the Chinese ROM animations tho.
Anyway I hope this helps
I am using an A2017 ROM on an A2017. I've not changed anything else. Maybe I need to update the boot stuff (firmware?).
What I'm seeing is that Play Services always needs to be manually enabled, and seems to drop out and require re-installation sometimes. So I have an apk on my internal memory for quick access.
I'm not sure that the "device not certified" is a cause or effect really.
So I have an apk on my internal memory for quick access. It's the latest non-beta 64bit version for Android 8 - should I try a specific one, e.g. is there likely to be a specific one which matches the ROM? (An older non 64 bit one seemed to give much the same problem)
I'd put up with the problem except I can't run some Google stuff at all (Play Store for instance), and some other stuff is compromised (e.g. I can't get into Waze on my usual ID, I'm guessing Play Services plays a part in authorizing). And I can't install some stuff I'd like.
And I'd still be interested to know which bits require upgrade to go to a G version, if it is do-able and would run trouble free.
There was a play store app that worked on most ROMs.
You are on Oreo now yes?
There was a link on one of the Android pie ROMs that I used, it worked fine.
If you are still having issues you can use an app called Yalp that works like the play store.
I've used it on custom ROMs when the play store app refuses to work.
Yes, Oreo now.
I've put YALP on and that looks pretty good. I now seem to have most things working, and those that aren't I can probably live without.
I use a network tool called FING which reports my phone details, and I think it's incorrect but it's saying in one place it's a A2017U which I don't think is right. But now I am more comfortable with EDL and stuff I'm going to continue to fix this properly but the urgency is now not there. I was thinking if I couldn't fix this I might have to buy a new phone on black Friday!! So thanks for your help.
I'm still not really quite sure why I get Chinese characters at start up and what files I need to change to out a G firmware on, if that is what is wrong, and if it's do-able. I think if I knew how to do that then I could put on a G firmware and matching ROM and I'd be in business!!
The same page offered me F-DROID which seems to offer a whole load of different free apps. Maybe they don't have ads? Anyway I'll have a look.
Anyway, again - thanks!!
Geoff
Geoff I'm glad I could help
I was running the Chinese Oreo on my phone and after selecting English in setting some parts of the ROM were still in Chinese, even some notifications.
I converted to the A2017G Oreo update when it was released.
I miss some of the features in the Chinese ROM tho.
So... without wishing to prolong this... your phone was Chinese (as mine was) and you are now running a Global version and all you upgraded was the ROM? And are you able to use the Play Store and you don't have any issues running apps I - and can you run, say, Google Maps?). Is your bootloader still unlocked and if so is the menu at boot time still in Chinese?
Or have you upgraded something other than the ROM?
I actually have an Axon 7 A2017G here in Australia.
I soft bricked it when I accidentally made a mistake flashing a ROM.
I searched for a suitable stock firmware but I could only flash the Chinese Oreo Beta. It had to be modified to run on my device until the Oreo package for my A2017G had been uploaded.
I've now running the proper software for this phone.
Thanks.
Another couple of hours and I have made a Major breakthrough! I went back over all my notes and checked what i'd done and one thing I hadn't remembered doing was setting the Pay Store to Autorun. So using the Mi-Assistant I have done this, and most of the stuff which wasn't working now is. I am still working on why OK Google won't work, but the list of things I might have to live without is now quite short!! The one major benefit is that my battery life seems to be greatly increased. Boot time is also much quicker which is a bonus but not critical.
Nice, yes battery life is improved, actually the Chinese Oreo Beta has a better battery life than my current Oreo.
I could get up to 4 days out of the Chinese ROM, my current ROM can manage just over 3 days at best.
I have battery saver mode on but not ultra battery saver.
I hope this has been a good learning experience for you?
"I hope this has been a good learning experience for you?"
For sure it has. Back in the days when I was 3rd level computer techie, the best learning came from other experts and from being thrown in the deep end, rather than what they taught you in the classroom!
