Buyer Beware Amazon Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Sales - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) General

Just want to chime in with some info.
I purchased the Note 10.1 2014 from Amazon. I made sure it was a Brand New one and paid the full price.
I got the item and the seal was broken on the box. No big deal "or so I thought" It then took 2 over the air update however now it would randomly reboot and restart.
I contact Amazon and they apologize and say they will ship me a New one overnight.
I pick that one up and same deal .. The Samsung seal is broken so I know it was an opened item. This is the 2nd one. I contacted Amazon and I will be getting a full refund. I will go to Best Buy and pick one up.
Can anyone here tell me is it common practice for Amazon to open these tablets before shipping the. They were all sold by amazon not a 3rd party seller. Needless to say I was highly upset.
I usually get my holiday shopping done at Amazon but not this year. This has left a really bad taste in my mouth. What are your experiences.
Should I be concerned.

Was the shipping package opened? It might be your courier who is opening up your tablet to inspect it.

NOPE..

The shipping packing was intact both times. The tablets themselves were opened with a broken seal. I am debating on if I should send the the second one back however I am sending it back. At least If I go to Best Buy I have the satisfaction of knowing I am the only one who opened the box. Also a note... The 2nd one took 3 OTA updates when I took it out. Also the serial number seems to be good as it allowed me to get the perks. should i be concerned as to why the box was opened.

I am returning a unit I got from Amazon. and I was thinking the same thing. It had a problem with the case making creaking sounds when handled. Also I noted that the plastic protection on the sides wasn't present. This made me very suspicious. I wasn't going to paid new for a case problem that was a constant distraction. They send me another one and its fine. However, I thought about going to Best Buy instead of getting another one from Amazon. I guess the only reason to open one if it was dropped and they wanted to check to see if was broken, otherwise no it isn't a common practice for them or anyone else to open them. They are suppose to come fresh from factory, no seals broken.
Just have to be an informed buyer now-a-days.
Doc

I had the same issue. They sent me two units that had both seals broken. The third one had only one seal broken. The tablet is in perfect shape but i still complained until they gave me 20% off to keep it. It was on sale for 519 with 104 more off i figured id take a chance. So far no issues.
The strange thing about the open seals is that they were all opened in the same manner.. seemed odd that they would all have the same tear pattern.. not sure how to explain.
If you get an open seal and want a deal.. contact by chat and raise a little cain..

@op I have read some other people on amazon have had this happen to their 2014's too. Strange.

I did that they gave me a $40 credit. Should I keep the note or send it back. What do you guys think. My only fear is someone had it and botched a flash or something and sent it back. How can I tell if the firmware has been tampered with or of somone triggered the Knox counter or the flash counter.

they had the issue with the original note 10.1 a year ago. ithink someone replied that amazon's response was that they opened them to verify that the correct item was in the box before shipment. mine that i ordered last year was intact.

ok what do you think

Okay so what do you guys think. should i keep the 2nd one. it seems to have no issue other than the seal being broken. They only gave me a $40 credit. Should I just send them back and look elsewhere. really need some sound advice.

This happens with all at some point. I've been with Amazon for a few years now and only had this happen once I THINK. Yet I always try to make sure it has "PRIME" by it. I've had this happen with NewEgg. I still buy from them.

Well if it still has warranty and works flawless. Keep it. You got $40.

Mine arrived from Amazon fine. If the table works fine & you got money back, then you are ahead of the game !

I bought 2 from Amazon. Had no problems at all. Seals were intact and they work great. Sounds like you are one lucky person. If yours works and you got money off then you got a better deal than me.

I had the same thing happen with every PC hard drive that I get from Amazon, too. They told me it's too easy be the manufacturer to put the wrong driven in the box, and then it becomes Amazon's problem one it's in the hands of the customer.

I say keep it as well. I kept mine and am very happy. On thing you can do is register the tablet with samsung and i believe they will tell you if the tablet has been registered already.. giving you a sense if the tablet was really used at all.
Its so odd to me that the amazon reps did not tell me that opening packages was their standard or common practice. All three times they appologized.. and said they were escalating the issue to check inventory. And then gave we 20% off.. which i couldnt refuse. Why would this be a common practice? The label says "if this seal is broken.." basically dont keep it.. if this is a common practice, then they are ensuring a large number of returns since most people are extremely "non-technical" and will obey the sticker..

I remember people reporting this a month ago with the 2014 release. I just figured they were unlucky. I recently order two of the older model for some family friends and both seals were broken. Requested a return and shipped it back.
The whole "were making sure everything is in there" doesn't make sense to me. Samsung pretty much promises it is and assumes responsibility by putting the seal on in the first place. It just seems like amazon is asking for trouble. Maybe im missing something that someone will explain for me.

That is BS. It seems they are turning around and reselling returns. And here I have one in my cart at amazon

If its open when you get it. Call them and make them give you a credit or a discount. strange thing is we just ordered a Nexus 7 2013 version right after the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014.. Guess what the Nexus 7 2013 has all seals intact. So what is the big deal removing them from the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014

Yeah. Well, the upside is this is Amazon, and I can't imagine anywhere that makes returns easier. They pay return shipping for many reasons.

So, just got my Note 10.1 2014 from Amazon. One tab was broken, the flap not even tucked in. the box itself was properly sealed.
I can tell the protetive plastics were messed with. I do believe this was a returned item, but can't be sure. It's pretty annoying for such an expensive product and I may make them keep sending replacements until I get a properly sealed one. Haven't yet decided.
For that matter, I am not even decided if I Want this tab over the original note 10.1 I am replacing (if I keep this). sigh.
Anyway, it the ir blaster window on the top of your tabs raised vs flush to the bezel?
Also, with the black model, are the usb cable and ac adapter really White?
Thanks

They just replied to me offering 15% off. That's $82
Now, I have already found out the white cables with black unit is normal...That is how my brother's came from amazon (sealed). He says they did that on the S4 as well. Probably run by best buy to see how raised the IR window should be. This one seems like a lot. But for $82 off, could be well worth it.

How to tell if Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 is refurbished or not

Hello everyone
I do have Samsung Galaxy Note N7000
And i was wondering how to tell if my galaxy note is refurbished or factory made
because i keep notice that my phone keep freeze a lot plus the Google maps and GPS totally kill the phone and so slow to use so please tell me if that normal thing to happen too or not ,
It might be the firmware.
Try Flashing XXLA6 Stock.
AFAIK, There is no way to tell whether a unit is brand new or Refurbished.
Dont know if this applys to notes. But for my galaxy s the different of a retail and a refurbished( the replacement phone samsung gave me) was the sticker on the back of the.phone showing serial imei and such. The retail onw is nice and good quality with samsung logo and made location. The refurb one is just one cheap sticker with some barcode and number

Do not flash XXLA6
wipe your device and flash the latest Emirates rom (arabic rom)
it is fast and stable.
The ICS will be released soon.

I got it from a guy who sells them on big hardware site in egypt
And i already have the emirates version on my phone
Just the thing is , how to tell if my phone is refurbished or not , whats the steps to know ?
there is no physical evidence new / user or phone from shop returns ...
i have your same version of the note, and it does the same with freezing, a friend has the same note but with v2.3.6 not 2.3.5 and it works a lot better.
so try updating to 2.3.6 (assuming that your device has no warranty) or wait for the ICS
Never ignore gut feelings!
I should have trusted my gut when I received my "NEW" SGN (N7000) -- a purchase I made on Amazon from a seller named "Goodios" -- when it arrived in a box with a broken factory seal. There was a sticker over the original seal but upon closer inspection it was obvious that the original factory seal had been broken. Unfortunately for me, due to the seller's high feedback rating I unconsciously began making excuses for them from the get go. I assumed they opened the box merely to add an aftermarket US power adapter despite common sense screaming out the fact that there would have been no practical reason to do such a thing. Any additional accessories could have simply been dropped into the shipping box -- there was after all plenty of room.
The last and biggest clue which would finally convince me that this was in fact NOT a new unit as described by the seller was the missing sticker that should have been covering the screw at the top left corner of the battery well. Removal of this sticker voids the factory warranty, and the fact that it was missing on mine told me that my unit was likely refurbished.
Unfortunately again for me I didn't figure out that last clue until after the 30-day window in which I could have returned the phone. I'm kicking myself now because that's something I would have otherwise thought to check had my suspicions not be quelled by the seller's feedback rating. A high positive feedback ratio often signifies an honorable seller, but it can also signify a crooked seller with ignorant customers like me. Another expensive lesson learned (sigh).

If it was fulfilled by Amazon then you might have hope. Let them know what you discovered and then tell them the item was not as described and that you demand a full refund. Amazon customer service phone number 1-866-216-1072

Good point but hard to find a "brick and mortar" store in the USA that sells this international unlocked phone therefore Amazon and ebay. I didn't even know Samsung had their own stores. If they have them in the USA it must be major cities like NYC, Chicago, LA, etc.

[Q] did you also get refurbished unit when bought new?

so i decided to buy a nexus 7 and ordered one through google play store, amazingly recieved mine in 2 days, when i recieved box it had 2 seals on each side and one of each was cut open and other was on top as shown clearly in pics attached, well i started using it, and next day i opened the back of tab and to my surprise the seal sticker on the screws were tempered already as the screwdrver had been used to opem the screws, that really made me feel screwed, i paid for a brand new unit and what i got is a refurbished unit, wtf google i called them and talked to representative when i told him about seals on screws he put me on hold for good 10 minutes and came back telling me i talked to my 2 supervisors and they say we do not ship refurbished unit we even send replacement units in warrenty as new not refurbished then i insisted again and he put me on hold again came back again telling me i talked to my supervisor and he told me that opening back voids the warrenty i said it pops off i did not unscrew anything he said it still voids warrenty i said ok lets just forget about if i popped back off say i id not do that please explain me the 2 seals on box one of which is cut open, then he ws like it might have been opened to check the screen issues we had in past, i was like no im not satisfied jjust gimme email address so i can send you pics and show you what i am trying to tell you, so he sent me email and i sent him these pics and waiting to see what they say. only reason im pissed is that i paid full price for a brand new unit and what i get is a refurbished unit wtf.. lets see what happens now, anyone else experienced same?
for some people it doesnt matter, but for me it is a concern...
I agree with you. You paid for a new N7 not a refurbished one! If I got that unit, it would have gone straight back. To start with, it has been sent back for a reason, more than likely screen lift. Possibly other faults with it.
I did read somewhere on here that open the back does not void the warranty because it's meant to be easily accessible, as long as you don't mess around with any of the internals.
Even if they don't want to replace it, you should at least get some money off. It's not your fault that someone has tightened the screws up......
Send it back....

Send it back and get one from a store. Mines was a C80 batch and had a different box (easy to open) with only one seal:
First thing I checked was to make sure the seal is intact, before I purchased the tablet.
Also, why did you had to tell them about screws and other things? The discussion should of stopped right at the multiple scotch tapes. Personally, I would've not opened the box. Now, they will probably charge you a stocking fee because of that or not even refund it saying that you opened the case heh. They are in panic mode due to fairly high number of returned tablets, so I guess they don't like to hear "I want an exchange/refund."
Yes, they do rework the affected units and resell them as new. If you're not happy then return it. The latest one I bought was obviously a rework since it had fingerprints all over but since it didn't have, bad pixels, etc. I kept it.
Yes, I get those too. The seal is different, when I peel it off I can clearly see the original transparent seal under it. Opened the back cover, warranty sticker on the screw is there untouch. Also, there's some finger print mark on the copper shield.
If this is reworked unit then I can say they still failed at it because mine has obvious screen lift. I fixed the screen with super glue and all is fine. But got to say that even their rework team is not competent enough. Wtf Asus?

So let me get this straight, you're complaining about some box and tape or seals but have a perfectly good N7 with no flaws or screen lift? Just be happy you have a good until.

That's exactly what I'm saying.
They can't resell used products and label them as new. That's a huge FTC violation. The reason they repackaged them is to attempt to fix the screen lift, whether it worked or not, you decide, but if you're wondering. Then that's why.

well the most ridiculous art is that after waiting for 2 days to hear back from google i contacted them again today and as soon as i started that i emailed you 2 days ago and have not heard back since, he was like yes i see you sent email and just 5 minutes ago your mail was picked and being worked on so just give it some time and you will see response i said ok fine ill give it 24 more hours, lets see what they say, i checked my unit is c60 so i definitely recieved an old reworked unit after paying full brand new price.... i definitely want a replacement unit mr.google and this time you better send me a new unit... i did read about screen lifts and then noticed a little screen lift on left side of screen it is lifted up from the frame but the right side is fine, i ushed it and it went back in but after an hour or so its back up... so this definitely is a reworked unit which was a total fail...

well my unit is c60 batch i checked. so i havent heard back from google yet total of 4 days now very lousy google service to catchup with customer`s complaints. i will try my best to return it without having to pay restocking fee. will never buy again from google, i would rather pay little extra and buy from store for peace of mind.

Did I receive an "open box" N7100....?

I just received my beautiful white N7100 and I purchased through Amazon Prime with Bluetekusa as the seller and I noticed that the box has NO seals on it like I have seen on almost every single unboxing and there was a fingerprint on the screen underneath the screen protector which is why I know that it has been opened... I did receive a US adapter inside the box but I think that they should be sealed and supply that as an external addition IMO... I am just really cautious when it comes to spending $700 on a phone that I have no idea where it came from and it has been opened...But, I am going to keep it and make sure it works correctly because I have been saving up for quite awhile and don't just wanna turn around and ship it right back.. Also, what kind of warranties are offered in the US for a phone like this (if any) cause I would like to be protected from at least mechanical failures... Thanks for any info or suggestions in advance!!
That sucks mate, of course it's always best get sealed box so that you surely know it is brandnew, but if there isn't any hairscratch and it's flawless phone then there's nothing to worry about.
Use display tester from market to see the display is perfect.

What a strange story. There was another guy who got a note 2 in my country. With all the seals intact. However it was rooted and flashed with a custom kernel! Weird! I guess you can fake the seals.

hi. this is my first time posting on xda. i bought 2 galaxy note 2 from gray market(ghills) for me and for my sister. i checked the seals before opening the box. everything is fine and i bought the 2 note after checking it. when i got home i checked everything again and i see that my note 2 is already rooted. it has an app called supersu and i check the custom binary download and it says yes and the system status is also custom instead of official. i checked the other note but it is fine. i texted the owner of the shop where i bought the note and he told me that it is impossible for them to fake the seal of the box. he's also my 'suki' so i am confident in dealing with him. do you think they can fake the seal of the box and gave me a second hand unit? the unit is good as bnew in appearance. it has no dent or hairline scratches. the plastic in the back and in the front where also there when we open the box. even the charger, battery and the headset where still in the plastic just like the other note that i bought and everything is clean.

That sucks mate, of course it's always best get sealed box so that you surely know it is brandnew, but if there isn't any hairscratch and it's flawless phone then there's nothing to worry about.
Use display tester from market to see the display is perfect.

Ya I am probably over reacting but I am going to start testing it out in about an hour after the battery is fully charged and then I will know for sure if it's a keeper or not... I just have NEVER seen a box like mine on ANY unboxing video with no seals... Usually they have 3 seals... I purchased mine through Amazon Prime so I will have no problems returning it and getting a full refund if necessary... If I root this and install a custom recovery and rom can I get it back to factory state if I find it has problems within the first 30 days?? Cause that's what I had planned anyways and I did call Squaretrade and they said that they could not provide a warranty for my item... Kinda sucks! Any other options guys? Thanks!

Why could they not provide warranty? You got it without warranty? I would return it if I could but it all boils down to you. Hope your phone is okay. *crosses fingers*

I live in the US and it's an International phone so I guess Squaretrade says that it has to have a US warranty to be covered... Sucks!
I dont know if it would be possible to remove the seals without scratching the box.

3rd party resellers on Amazon are generally sketchy. I'd get from Newegg or wait on Amazon themselves to sell it direct. Too many shenanigans with resellers. They are generally shady people.

I know that is exactly what I thought... I did find out it is from Trinidad and Tobago area with the country code and it appears to be working fine except it says I'm roaming on T-mobile? Something to do with the APN I imagine... But it definitely did not have seals like all of the others I have seen... I plugged into Kies and upgraded to the latest OTA and I'm good I believe... :good:

Many times imported (read: grey market) phones are opened so they can put a charging adapter in the box. I know my NIB Galaxy Nexus from the beginning of this year (from expansys) had been opened. It was to put a charging adapter in the box.
But the fingerprints are strange and suggest it wasn't NIB. eBay aggressively sides with the buyer, so I'm not surprised you won the case.

I guess in his case there was deceit involved as his phone had a nick on the top. I don't know how that could happen if your only intent was to put a charger in.

no there is no reason to open the box to put the charger in. you put it in the shipping box like a normal person. not open up someones brandnew phone. 100% feedback not there to scam anyone. first time i even opened up a case on anyone. i got my money back and he got his used scratched phone back. i'm glad your fond of 700 dollar used products because i am sure as hell not. and his newly feedback shows other buys saying openbox now. so i'm not the only one
even if they were opened to put a "charger" in state this in the auction number one. and number 2 dont try to reseal the box.
oh and btw hows this for resealing? didnt even try to do a good job lmao look at the double seal. i took this to send to paypal

if the phone looks new and it had the sticker on the front of the screen, who cares if the box was opened.
Everytime a new device comes out, peoples OCD levels goes up.

new phone to the market. i want it sealed. and now that you bring up the sticker, the one that goes on the back battery cover fell right off because of dirt. it has nothing to do with OCD. product used. scratches. why should we have to pay full price for it. if you bought a new car and before you got in it. the dealer put a scratch in it would you still take it? lol

Broken Seal?

Has anyone else received their nexus 10 with the black "do not accept if seal is broken" stickers ripped? I'm in the uk if that makes any difference. The battery was at 65% (though it looks like this is normal/common). It might not be an issue except it also has light bleed in the corners so I guess I'll be returning it.
nope, but the screen looked awful when I got mine, covered in crap with a scratchy bit in the middle, then I realised it was a peel off cover and it was pristine underneath
You should be able to send it back, I'm sure they'll know if someone else opened it, was quite suprised when I booted mine up and I was greeted with my name on the log-in screen.
My seals were broken too..
Mine was broken too, also sought bleed at right bottom, thinking of returning and buying nexus 7
sent from s3 running Viking way
Mine came with 61% charged battery and my seals were in tact.
My replacement had one broken seal. So I guess its still okay since it wasn't opened and tampered with.

Yes mine was delivered yesterday by tnt. Bag torn and seals broken. Not accepting that. Disgusted.
Rang the number for returns and an American answered. Very slick on the phone and offered apologies. No way am I having that. Play store should be ashamed of themselves.

I'd be interested to know why some peoples' seals were broken. Is it being a return the most likely explanation? Was there any light bleed? I really don't expect to pay £400 for a return.
I've had 3 Nexus 10's so far - one purchase and two replacements for various problems.
There were plain white seals on the first that were in tact, but the two replacements both had black Samsung seals that were broken.
I had 2 seals
One broken, other one not
Battery was also discharge around 65%
No issue until now
PS: purchase 2 weeks ago in france
Original had packing tape seal but no Samsung Seal. Second nexus had 1/2 the seals broken.

I ordered mine the Friday after the Tuesday launch and only had clear packing tape on the short ends of the box.
Replacement arrived and just one of the black seals broken this time. These people are utter garbage. I have never paid for anyhting worth £400 before which has been tampered with before i even get my hands on it. Again i cannot really give as a gift so a third one is going to have to be ordered. Another freeze on my debit card of £400 meaning over a grand in a week which has been held onto by Google. And no returns stickers for the first one menaing i will have to ring them again in the USA to discuss.
I am wondering, have they found a way to get into the box by just breaking one seal and tampering with the device. I suspect it is easily doable.
Never have i dealt with any company so unprofessional.

You sure the Play Store is to blame? Maybe customs is opening them in some countries? I know quite a few places that open items to inspect them, especially if it is electronics.

Random checking on consignments perhaps, but there's no way customs in any country would open 90% of the devices in a consignment.
This is clearly the logistics handlers (Computer 2000 in the UK) being told to recycle RMA'd devices.
Utterly shameful IMO.
I just got my nexus 10 today and had them install my user info. When I opened the box, both black seals were intact.

If you are buying a Note 10.1, save yourself some money

Since the 10.1 2014 launched I knew I was going to buy one, I wanted to find a good deal on it though. I got my Black 32GB for $480 shipped! $120 off retail ain't bad.... :good:
What I did:
Go to Amazon and select the Black 32GB, there will be Used ones listed below. Amazon Warehouse is selling "Open Box" ones for $533 in "Good" condition. I looked for one that had the description that said: "Packaging may be damaged" as the only disclaimer. Then during checkout, apply for the Amazon Rewards card and they will give you a $50 gift card instantly that you can apply to the order. You don't even have to use the Amazon card, you just have to apply for it. Free money! I had it shipped with Free 2 day Prime shipping and when it arrived it looked like it never was used. The box had a couple rips on it, thats it. The tablet is in perfect condition.
For my money, I think you can't go wrong.
Thought I would share the love

anyway another option for me is to wait for black friday...this tablet is a must have for me...so will get it one way or another

But a word of caution to anyone going the eBay route, Samsung will not honor their warranty unless you purchase the device from an authorized dealer.

Not necessarily at all. It's like people that buy stuff at Best Buy. They just decide they don't want it and send it back. I have used mine a ton since I got it and it works perfect. So I don't know how it could be a bad one. It's not refurbished, that would have to be done by the manufacturer. This would be constituted as "open box".

This is a good point and opens up a new discussion. My theory: I think that people are being very dishonest and buying these tablets to simply get the free perks and then are returning them. I mean heck, you get $75 in free movies/music/apps! Mine when I got it still had all the Perks papers in the box. However, when I went to register on the site it said it was already registered. I opened a ticket with Samsung chat today and the rep said that in 2 days I should get an email from an elevated team that will give me the perks. I was very vague in my dialog. I simply said I bought it from Amazon and it would let me register the device on Samsung.com but would not let me register for the perks. He took all my info and left me waiting to hear from the other team. But I have a copy of the chat transcript that says I will get my perks in 2 days. I think they will have to honor that... In any case, I really don't care that much if I don't get them. Honestly all I wanted was this awesome tablet. And for the price I got it, it's a steal. If I get Perks too, then yay for me!
So you could def get lucky and buy one that the person didn't steal the Perks out of... A gamble I guess.

Make sure you check your gmail under the promotions tab. I thought some kind of funny business was going on with my tablet since I also got the "already registered" message when trying to claim my perks, but it turns out their page for it can be hit or miss (found lots of complaints online). Meanwhile the perks were sitting in my promo folder all along...

YOU MAY BE OVER LOOKING SOMETHING
Below is a copy of the Standard Limited Warranty and according to the warranty by purchasing it used you don't have a warranty.
So if it was registered........... There goes your savings as you now need to purchase a warranty.
I would buy an extended warranty with damage protection anyway because micro USB ports are known to be fragile and I would want to experiment with root. Still a savings though.
What is covered and for how long?
SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS AMERICA, INC. (“SAMSUNG”)
warrants that SAMSUNG’s devices and accessories

workmanship under normal use and service for the period
commencing upon the date of purchase by the first
consumer purchaser and continuing for the following

Be careful I bought one of these last week and it didn't have an s pen. A bit ticked off but amazon gave me credit to buy an s pen at my local store. There's 2 very minor scratch on the bottom but not very noticeable unless you really look. Also some light bleed. Otherwise the tablet is fine. Considering it has some scratch I would assume it was a returned used unit. Still not a bad deal but I'm a bit concerned. I was able to register the device so I'm good with warranty coverage I assume.

Yeah I hear ya, that's why I looked for one that only had the description that said the packaging was damaged. They were right on, my tablet is perfect. Minimal light bleed and not a scratch on it. I think that all units are going to have a little light bleed, its just the nature of the beast. The missing s-pen is a fluke I'm sure.
I am assuming the same things about warranty, they would never know if I bought this used if I am the first one to register it... So warranty should be fine
