There was an OTA update to the CLIQ today, which was taken down after 15 minutes. Reports say this added functionality to their home button as such:
There is also a new option to double-click home button to launch, contact, voice search, etc... it's under Application Settings

As for the double tap on the home screen, you can now set that as a shortcut. So if you press the home key twice, it will open up a certain function of the phone. Like take you to your contacts or open something else. By default it opens up google voice search.

No you can't customize the Double Tap. It is located under Settings - Application Settings and gives you the choices of Voice Search, Messaging, Dialer, Map, Contact and Camera

Is there any chance that something like this can be either a) ported over, or if it's not possible, b) developed for the Nexus One? (Basically if it is possible to add button functionality using the standard SDK tools?)
And even better, edited/hacked so as to allow home button double-tap to launch ANY app? (And even add double tap functionality for the other buttons?)
I don't see this working too well with capacitive buttons, tbh.
double tap on track ball
I wish there is a way to have double tab on he track ball to launch the dialer or to my favorite contacts. It would make it easy for making phone calls.

That too!
The reason I ask if this is even possible to develop using the standard SDK tools is because I've been searching and searching and searching and searching over the past year with my G1 for some app on the Market that adds or alters button functionality. To date, there is not a *SINGLE* app that does this for *ANY* Android phone.
Until yesterday's update of course. Finally!!!
Is this something that ONLY Motorola (and other carriers) can do?
Personally, I would love to see a mod in spare parts or something that would make it so that all of the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the screen on the Nexus would require a double-tap to be activated. This would help us avoid brushing up against them accidentally when not meaning to. Granted, it would take a little bit of getting used to double-tapping them to make them work, but I'm sure some people would appreciate and use such a mod. I'm talking about a purely optional mod that you would not have to have turned on (but could via Spare Parts) and would be off to keep the button behavior stock by default.

i guess the longevity of the trackball is low, at least it is on my blackberry. if you are onto this, mate, then, maybe, it could be either dblpress or longpress - to chose from?

Hah, different strokes for different folks. I wouldn't use that, but that's exactly why it should be customizable.
Can any Android developers comment on this?

Hell yeah! Now I wonder what it would take to get a back button long press?
I emailed the developer to see if a Back button long press was possible. His answer:
It is not possible to override function of back button.

1. Is there a decent spell checker for Android, I'm used to typing very fast so I was used to my spell checker on my iPhone changing words correctly for me for when I made mistakes, such as 'hir' instead of 'him' etc etc, it worked so well and was just wondering if Android had a good one?
2. How to I delete an icon on my home screen, I know how to delete icon's that I've put there but the one that came with my device I'm not sure For example, phone, contacts, messages, applications.
Thanks
I do not have the phone yet but I believe the four buttons at the bottom (phone, contacts, messaging and applications) cant be removed, they are a part of touchwiz unfortunately. There is a way to get rid of all of them, if you use a launcher such as launcher pro.

Good to know. Now that I know that, if you remove one of the icons from the 'dock' do the others center themselves?
Trust me. When you start to get the hang of swype, you will never ever need another spell checker ever.
Right, Swype, although not new, is really great. Kind of get addicted to it.

Yes Android has spell checker and had it for a long time and it's really really great. I understand you I do so many mistakes because i type so fast but I know it will correct them so i just keep typing faster xD

Go into the applications menu, hit settings and then edit, there you can alter the placement of the applications as well as the four in the dock.
Is there any way to remove just the widgets I've put on the home screen without removing the whole home screen which will include all my shortcuts?

of course, simply tap and hold the widget and drag it down to the recycle bin. same as when you want to remove an shortcut icon.
I'm hoping to get some help from a developer to make two apps that I can't find anything like on the market. I have no clue what's involved, but if nothing else, maybe someone can shed some light on how hard these would e to make - or actually make them
- App 1 is just a simple app to replicate the function of the home button. IE, you run the app, you go to your home screen. That's it.
- App 2 is an app to go to your last task. The idea is to be able to simple toggle between two apps. Program might need some sort of ignore list (like ignoring itself!).
Reason - I'm using Gesture Launcher (http://www.appbrain.com/app/gesture-launcher/com.reeyees.gesturelauncher) and am getting used to going to the floating hand instead of the home button. I'd like to be able to do everything from there.
So, ideally, I would like to program a gesture to go home instead of hitting the home button, and program a gesture to go to last app instead of last app.
Thanks in advance!

I've writed it. It's pretty easy.
For the second one sorry but today i don't have so much time and i have to think about it.
So you want an app that just takes you to the last open app or an app that opens the most recently used tab thing?
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.lulz_industries.lassiecomehome
uploaded in the market, just in case someone want download it and does not want to search the url in the forum.
For the second one just hold down the home button. The apps there are listed in order of latest opened.

An app that takes you to the last open app (and ignore itself). For example, in the morning I load up Waze (a map/traffic program) and Astro player for listening to podcasts. Would like to be able to gesture to move back & forth between them.
Another example - I'm .. reading a book. I gesture to check Twitter, then want to use a gesture to go back to last app (book reader).
It would have to ignore itself (or the app itself would get into a loop or something?), and it would have to ignore the gesture program - and possibly others (ignore home?) - so that one would be harder to do.
As a temp. measure, looking for a program that just pops up the same thing that holding down the home-key would do (show 8 recent apps). That would be better then nothing, but not quite what I would ideally like.

A good idea - never know when someone else might want it, and there's nothing else in the market like it I'm aware of.

Edit - looking into:
QuickSwitch - watching video, looks like designed for a slide out keyboard, but can do hard-keyboard-less. Testing shortly.
and
PreviousApp description says it's activated by Camera long press which wouldn't help.
So you basically want an app that emulates the back arrow key?

Wish it was that easy.
(example 1) Run Twitter app, launch web link. Click 3 or 4 more links. Want to go back to Twitter? Click back arrow about 5 times. Back arrow has no way to know if you meant back 1 page, or back to previous app. (Similar things happen with many many apps).
(example 2) Run book reader. Run Twitter. Click back arrow to go back to book (works fine). Click back arrow to go back to Twitter (oops, doesn't work).
(in example 2 - would like app to go back & forth between reader & twitter)
Went back & forth with the maker of QuickSwitch (a pretty neat app on it's own) describing what I was looking for. He's looking into it as well
OH - also btw - an all called Clutch Pad does similar things (including a last app), but having a bad time triggering the event regularly. If/when it runs perfectly every time it would handle everything I mentioned! The dev there is also very responsive.
Thanks to all for help - I was hoping this last app thing would be like the home thing that Jordan5222 made - something that a dev would spend 10 minutes making. If it's a big project, it's not that important!

Installed... loading app list in program.. hmm, not working on Gesture Launcher.
I tried to load up Twitter, then load up NewsRob (rss reader). Then I ran the program from GL. GL shows it found the app & ran it, but nothing happened.
To test it further, I re-ran Twitter & Newsrob. Then using the hold-down-home, I ran your app over & over again. This correctly switched between Twitter & Newsrob.
Do you have Gesture Editor as an ignored-app (ie, if I launch your app from GL, it doesn't go to the last app - which is GL) ?
I'll gladly pay for your license for the GL if you'd like to try it yourself. I'm getting kinda curious if this is do-able at this point, since I think these 2 apps can be used for many different alternate launchers (like GL, Clutch Pad, Swipe Pad [actually, this last app would be fricking amazing in Swipe Pad])

The other launchers are similar - you can try SwipePad for free from the market. SwipePad gives you some hot points - you click on them and 12 favorite apps/shortcuts appear (so it's drag from corner to shortcut to launch it). I've actually read in the SP thread about people asking to make the bottom 3 apps the most recent ones.
The 1st version of Back 2 Home works *perfectly* with Slide Pad. I'll have to play tomorrow with it, the home program & SwipePad (played a bit in the car on the way home) - but it worked very, very well !
2nd version of Back 2 Task seems to work about the same. Works well with SwipePad, not at all with Gesture Launcher. Works with press & hold of home button. What's the difference between the versions?
I'll actually have to think a bit of which launcher makes more sense. Gesture Launcher allows unlimited programs & shortcuts (limited by memory really), but is slower. Slide Pad allows 12, but is quicker. Both do Shortcuts (like a Folder Organizer folder) & Applications. GL seems to have a problem with Sense's Mail app (it gets stuck there).
With you app (currently) working perfectly in SwipePad, (and the home app too) it's a big ++ for SwipePad. I'll search for the thread of Slide Pad and ask them to test out the Home app & both versions of the Last app & see if we can get some other people in on this.
Either way, you might want to publish the 1st version of Back to the Task on the market as well for people that can't otherwise get to it.
...and once again, thanks for your work!
Edit - I noticed that sometimes I called it "Slide Pad", and sometimes "Swipe Pad" - the free one I'm talking about is SwipePad Beta - sorry, getting mixed up in all the names!
Edit 2 - In the name of the warped: Currently playing with a combination of SwipePad & Gesture Launcher. My 3x4 grid that I'll be experimenting with tomorrow is:
sms/mail/contact group manager
ireader/camera/quick settings
internet/newsrob/tweetcaster premium
gesture launcher/lassie come home/back to the task
I have Swipe shortcuts to my most common apps used. I have Swipe set to use bottom corners, so BTTT is at a very quick position, as is home. I can use Gesture Launcher to access the other programs (including Gestures to get to my 5 Folder Organizer folders).
I did experiment briefly with putting a Favorite Folder Organizer folder in the bottom left, but Back to the Task had similar problems as Gesture Launcher with it (it kept puling up the folder as a task).
Lessee. Direct SwipePad for most common apps. SwipePad into 20 or so memorized apps in Gesture Launcher. SwipePad into GestureLauncher (shapes are 1-5) to get to my Apps/Games/Internet/Multimedia/Tools Folder Organizer stuff - sounds good to me

I'll have to play with version 1 for a day, then uninstall and try 2 to know for sure. Limited (under 5 minute) testing - they seem to be the same.
I was thinking about an exclusion list/ignore list - problem is, I'm not sure where you would build it unless you (in theory) had 2 apps: The one that did last app, and a separate config app.
This morning, I did hit some force closes on the app (it gave me a FC, then oddly worked anyway). I wound up rebooting my phone & haven't hit any yet.
Also, while it's only been a couple of hours, this entire layout thingy I'm doing seems very promising. Like you, I was just using 12 icons on my today screen, backed with Launcher Pro (5 dock icons are all Folder Organizer shortcuts). While it works, it never felt that smooth.
The plus is that you don't have any extra apps in memory, so it's pretty fast. And when you go to your home screen to launch an app, you can see other widgets (weather, maybe a to-do list..etc).
On the flip side, I was getting annoyed at being in a program, hitting home, hitting a folder, then running the app. At this rate, my home button won't last much longer! I don't like most recent apps since they apps aren't always in the same spot. I don't want to have to stare at my screen & look for a specific icon to run a program.
So in short, it just feels like android could do better. My current solution is defiantly over-complicated.. but so far working for me (with your help!).
SwipePad is free - if you are really curious, download a copy and give it at least a day to play with. Try putting your last app on one of the bottom corners & experiment a bit. Heck, for all I know, in a couple days I'll toss this idea out & go back to where you are now myself.
EDIT: Found out that SwipePad works on lock screen (or does on Widget Locker, which I use). So I removed all sliders from Widget Locker and now using SwipePad as my hidden unlocker. SwipePad to Back to the Task does the same thing as a normal unlock - goes to the last app running before Widget Locker

I've been using Swipe Pad for a few days, and BTTT is behaving mostly correct. It's a real fast way to jump to the last task. Only problem I hit is when the last app is Gesture Launcher or a Folder Organizer folder (which register as the last "app").

Agreed. I had a feeling when I first posted that the last app wasn't a simple thing.
Still, I think the way it works is fine for what I need. If you really want to make it into something more professional, the only way I can see doing it would be to implement some sort of "ignore apps on this list."
If your Last App ignored Home/Widget Locker/Gesture Launcher/Folder Organizer/Swipe Pad it would be perfect.
For a quick app made for 1 user (anyone else using it that isn't posting?) - it's fine the way it is (and one again, thanks for the apps!)
Hi guys,
I have an Asus K52Je, and freshly installed Windows 8 on it. What I have noticed is that I cannot highlight text anymore in almost all places after typing with keyboard. As a workaround I just double tap the WINDOWS key on my keyboard and it works again as long as I dont type anything, then it goes bad again.
Does anyone have a clue how can I solve this?
Thanx
I haven't seen this at all. Is this on the desktop or in an app? What app (desktop or otherwise)? If you double-click a word, does it still get highlighted, or is highlighting completely gone? If you drag like you're highlighting, and then hit [Backspace], does the text get deleted anyhow?

This happens in all MS Office products, some other desktop apps as well, and widows itself in search areas etc.
What does not work is highlighting by holding left click and dragging the mouse. Otherwise any other kind of selection works (double click, holding shift and arrow keys, ctrl+a).

ok I came here because it looks like the most active forum for rooted NST
I just rooted my nook simple touch today and I am really liking it
so far. I got nookmanager to work and installed the GOOGLE apps, opera mobile and button savior and everthing is working
in fact I am using it now.
so far my only gripes besides the slow screen
(which I knew of) are the keyboard is hard to work with
and lacks autocorrect, no easy app switching and
lack of an easy way to switch to landscape display mode.
I know there are other keyboards that can be installed
so I will try those out a little later.
Right now I am most concerned with the screen rotation.
I like to do some things in landscape mode - especally web browsing since many pages are optimized for wider screens.
I am aware the nst lacks an actual orientation sensor but I would like a floating button like button savior provides that would let me select portait or landscape. I did quite a bit of Googling but turned up with nothing.
Does anyone with experience with the nook have any ideas?
Thank you

Well, I can't give you exactly what you're looking for, but I can share a tip.
The .apk file below is the installable app that I use to switch my orientation. I like it because it's minimalistic, and because landscape mode sticks in ALL apps, including B&N. To make an always-available toggle, use Nook Touch Mod Manager (which came pre-installed with NookManager), and make the Screen Rotation Control app launch from whatever button you like. I have it set to launch from long-pressing my top right hardware button, which, of course, is always available.
Let me know how it goes!
P.S. I included my favorite keyboard just for fun, so I'd highly recommend it!

Thanks for the orientation app.....works well. Unfortunately although I installed the keyboard app I couldn't enable it as an input method. Just couldn't see "Hacker's Keyboard anywhere".

Ah. Here's how to fix that:
Get NookColor Tools if you haven't already. Here's the thread: [APP]NookColor Tools
Install the Hacker's Keyboard.
Then, go into /data/app and find the corresponding file (it will have the "Esc" icon on it).
Copy that file into /system/app.
Reboot your Nook.
Open NookColor Tools and select "Choose Keyboard". Then select "Hacker's Keyboard".
You're done! :good:

You have to make sure that it's copied over to the /system folder and then it should show up after a reboot.

ok I came here because it looks like the most active forum for rooted NST
I just rooted my nook simple touch today and I am really liking it
so far. I got nookmanager to work and installed the GOOGLE apps, opera mobile and button savior and everthing is working
in fact I am using it now.
so far my only gripes besides the slow screen
(which I knew of) are the keyboard is hard to work with
and lacks autocorrect, no easy app switching and
lack of an easy way to switch to landscape display mode.

You mentioned that you have button Savior installed already, just long press the home key to switch to any apps you've already launched, same as any other android it allows you to easily switch apps.

That'd work, but it is still more handy to have it assigned to a key. Less taps, you know?
I'm working on making the soft status bar "menu" icon into a lock-rotation icon, and then I'm going to assign Screen Rotation Control to it. I'll put the update in my Cool status bar modification thread found in my signature.

Thank you so much!
That oreintation app is about as close to what I want as I could hope for.
I did not know I could remap hardware buttons. that nook mod manager is very useful.
I don't plan to use the stock apps anyway. didn't really care for them.
my primary uses for this is browsing the web outdoors and reading sideloaded books.
I have never used the b&n store since I bought this last month
Then, go into /data/app and find the corresponding file (it will have the "Esc" icon on it).

Try this:

OR
Try using Total Commander (which is what I used).

Actually, this isn't the same thing. I'd be glad to tell you what DOES work, though!
First thing to do is what is in that post, but then you have to follow these steps, too:
1. Open ES File Explorer.
2. Open the side menu (the icon is near the top right corner; it looks like a phone and a globe).
3. Scroll down till you see the option "Show Hidden Files".
4. Slide/click the slider to the "ON" postition.
5. Close out of ES, restart it, and go to /data. You will see a number of folders there that were hidden before.

Yes apologies I got mixed up. IIRC Total Commander showed the system files without any configuration needed so I was half right!!
May I ask what version of ES File Explorer people are using? The latest (v3 I think) crashes on me whereas 1.5 is fine but I don't see the icon in the top right mentioned.

Ah, I see. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Lemme go check what my version is. By the way, the icon only appears in the top-right corner area when the app is in portrait mode - when in landscape, it appears in the exact middle-right area!
EDIT - I'm using ES v3. Strange that it crashes on you.
The first and until about 2 years ago, what I thought was the best file manager was ES file explorer, however since then I've been using Root Explorer and in my opinion is about the best and easiest on the Android platform, no complicated setup or configuration, just click on the top for full r/w access anywhere.

Works great
I find that Jellybean keyboard works fairly well except I hate what it does with the full screen text field.
The hackers keyboard works pretty well although text correction doesn't seem to work. Also the key popups leave eink ghosting.
Has anyone gotten copy and paste to work on NST? I can copy in Opera Mobile but cannot paste because long pressing
the text field does nothing.

Could you post the Jellybean keyboard?
I don't use text correction - I prefer to correct it myself so that I spell everything right without cheats!
And yes, I have gotten Copy/Paste to work. HOWEVER, it only works if you touch and hold on a text box (with text in it) when it's not selected.

Hard to imagine no autocorrect is worse than having it but it is. Its not because I cannot spell but rather because
I often hit the wrong key on such a small keyboard and it is a pain to back up.
Jellybean keyboard is here: play <dot> google <dot> com/store/apps/details?id=com.jlsoft.inputmethod.latin.jelly.free (Link restriction )
Or I can post an APK

Ah, I see. Makes sense. By the way, there is a setting to turn off key popups (avoid bad ghosting). Click the on-keyboard settings icon, then click "Settings for Hacker's Keyboard". Customize your keyboard there.
Could I please have the APK? I don't have gApps installed on my Nook (by choice).
