ok I came here because it looks like the most active forum for rooted NST
I just rooted my nook simple touch today and I am really liking it
so far. I got nookmanager to work and installed the GOOGLE apps, opera mobile and button savior and everthing is working
in fact I am using it now.
so far my only gripes besides the slow screen
(which I knew of) are the keyboard is hard to work with
and lacks autocorrect, no easy app switching and
lack of an easy way to switch to landscape display mode.
I know there are other keyboards that can be installed
so I will try those out a little later.
Right now I am most concerned with the screen rotation.
I like to do some things in landscape mode - especally web browsing since many pages are optimized for wider screens.
I am aware the nst lacks an actual orientation sensor but I would like a floating button like button savior provides that would let me select portait or landscape. I did quite a bit of Googling but turned up with nothing.
Does anyone with experience with the nook have any ideas?
Thank you

Well, I can't give you exactly what you're looking for, but I can share a tip.
The .apk file below is the installable app that I use to switch my orientation. I like it because it's minimalistic, and because landscape mode sticks in ALL apps, including B&N. To make an always-available toggle, use Nook Touch Mod Manager (which came pre-installed with NookManager), and make the Screen Rotation Control app launch from whatever button you like. I have it set to launch from long-pressing my top right hardware button, which, of course, is always available.
Let me know how it goes!
P.S. I included my favorite keyboard just for fun, so I'd highly recommend it!

Thanks for the orientation app.....works well. Unfortunately although I installed the keyboard app I couldn't enable it as an input method. Just couldn't see "Hacker's Keyboard anywhere".

Ah. Here's how to fix that:
Get NookColor Tools if you haven't already. Here's the thread: [APP]NookColor Tools
Install the Hacker's Keyboard.
Then, go into /data/app and find the corresponding file (it will have the "Esc" icon on it).
Copy that file into /system/app.
Reboot your Nook.
Open NookColor Tools and select "Choose Keyboard". Then select "Hacker's Keyboard".
You're done! :good:

You have to make sure that it's copied over to the /system folder and then it should show up after a reboot.

You mentioned that you have button Savior installed already, just long press the home key to switch to any apps you've already launched, same as any other android it allows you to easily switch apps.

That'd work, but it is still more handy to have it assigned to a key. Less taps, you know?
I'm working on making the soft status bar "menu" icon into a lock-rotation icon, and then I'm going to assign Screen Rotation Control to it. I'll put the update in my Cool status bar modification thread found in my signature.

That oreintation app is about as close to what I want as I could hope for.
I did not know I could remap hardware buttons. that nook mod manager is very useful.
I don't plan to use the stock apps anyway. didn't really care for them.
my primary uses for this is browsing the web outdoors and reading sideloaded books.
I have never used the b&n store since I bought this last month
Then, go into /data/app and find the corresponding file (it will have the "Esc" icon on it).

Actually, this isn't the same thing. I'd be glad to tell you what DOES work, though!
First thing to do is what is in that post, but then you have to follow these steps, too:
1. Open ES File Explorer.
2. Open the side menu (the icon is near the top right corner; it looks like a phone and a globe).
3. Scroll down till you see the option "Show Hidden Files".
4. Slide/click the slider to the "ON" postition.
5. Close out of ES, restart it, and go to /data. You will see a number of folders there that were hidden before.

Yes apologies I got mixed up. IIRC Total Commander showed the system files without any configuration needed so I was half right!!
May I ask what version of ES File Explorer people are using? The latest (v3 I think) crashes on me whereas 1.5 is fine but I don't see the icon in the top right mentioned.

Lemme go check what my version is. By the way, the icon only appears in the top-right corner area when the app is in portrait mode - when in landscape, it appears in the exact middle-right area!
EDIT - I'm using ES v3. Strange that it crashes on you.
The first and until about 2 years ago, what I thought was the best file manager was ES file explorer, however since then I've been using Root Explorer and in my opinion is about the best and easiest on the Android platform, no complicated setup or configuration, just click on the top for full r/w access anywhere.

I find that Jellybean keyboard works fairly well except I hate what it does with the full screen text field.
The hackers keyboard works pretty well although text correction doesn't seem to work. Also the key popups leave eink ghosting.
Has anyone gotten copy and paste to work on NST? I can copy in Opera Mobile but cannot paste because long pressing

Hard to imagine no autocorrect is worse than having it but it is. Its not because I cannot spell but rather because
I often hit the wrong key on such a small keyboard and it is a pain to back up.
Jellybean keyboard is here: play <dot> google <dot> com/store/apps/details?id=com.jlsoft.inputmethod.latin.jelly.free (Link restriction )

Really missing a function like press and hold the Home button to see previous used apps to switch to.... I'm running with GoLauncherEX but it apparently doesn't have that ability.
Any easy way or app that can and still work with GoLauncher.
I would consider another Launcher but I've not tried any others.
Market search for taskswitcher by shisho. Worked great for me. I use Adw but should work with any launcher including stock.
One home tap for switcher, two for real home.
Thanks that works fine.
Another option is SwipePad with the Tasking add-on. Hold for a split-second at the corner or edge of the screen of your choice and then drag towards the center of the screen and a task switcher will pop up. Move to the task of your choice and let go to switch to it. You can switch really quick once you get the hang of it.

Wow that's a freaking amazing app. I paid for the recent tasks addon (since I think that's necessary for multitasking).

I think SwipePad is one of those "best kept secret" apps. I've been using it since it was released and cannot use an Android phone without it. It was the first app I downloaded from the market after rooting. Glad to see it gaining popularity though.

I got SwipePad with Tasker as well and it seems the only way you can do it is to put a shortcut to Tasker in one of the boxes, swipe to it, and THEN it pulls up a menu of your recent apps. I ended up getting a refund for it because that's not what I wanted - I was hoping it would automatically populate the tiles with my recent apps instead of adding an extra step.
I'll have to try some of the other solutions mentioned in this thread.
Open the settings for SwipePad and then go to the Hotspots tab where you choose which spot activates the normal swipepad. Click on a different hotspot and "recent tasks" will show up as an option. Once set up it does work like what you were hoping
Just to clarify for anyone else reading, the add-on required is "Tasking: SwipePad add-on", not to be confused with the unrelated "Tasker" app for scripting and automation

Corners problem
I installed Swipe Pad and wondered... where have you been for all of my Fire life? Am surprised amazon hasn't absorbed them into their product since it is so easy and simple to jump.
Altho, I did have problems configuring the corners (might be the custom home bar down there), but configuring lower left panel for tasks didn't seem to have any problem.
BTW, what a great premise - give basic app for free, sell the advanced.
[Edit: Before you jump on this, I'm now having crashing of SwipePad when trying to get it to launch market or other shortcuts. Will contact developers and see if this is imminently fixable.]

You can also install button savior if you're rooted your Fire. It can come in handy for some full screen apps that rely on the non-existent hard buttons also. You just long press on the button savior home icon and you'll get the little icon list of recent apps. I have mine setup with a slight delay before it invokes but it defaults to instant on.

Smart Taskbar
I tried swipepad and didn't find it easy to set up and use on the KF. I also didn't want to pay for the extra add-ons without being totally sure I liked it. Found smart taskbar and I've been really happy with it. Easier to pull up than swipepad and has recent tasks built in. I recommend it.

Remember that with paid apps, you can try them out and get a refund if you uninstall within 15 minutes. But if you don't like how Swipepad works then having the Tasking addon won't be worth it.

Well you need to get it from the Android market (which requires root to install), but I guess you can also sideload it. The app itself doesn't require root access.

+1 on Button Savior... a nice out-of-the-way solution for the long press home feature.
Naturally some helpful soul here on XDA pointed me to this app and it works like a charm.
I have a Nook Simple Touch reader unrooted. Since I use it only for reading rpubs, it works fairly well. I have a Nook Color running CM7 for everything else but the NC wasn't good enough for ePubs so I got a Simple Touch. the setup works pretty well so far except a couple of things:
1. Dictionary. I used a friend's Kindle for a little bit and got hooked to looking up the words by clicking them. NST does similar but you have to touch and hold the word, then click lookup, then close the box. It is considerably easier on the Kindle. I know the Kindle App also does it on Android. Is there any way to get that feature without rooting and installing the Kindle App? If I do install the Kindle App, is there a way to use the page buttons? I don't like making sliding page turn gestures on the screen. In fact, I would like the ability to turn off touch screen completely and be able to use buttons only like the Kindle.
Also the Kindle App uses different fonts than the stock reader or Kindle device. Is there a way to change it?
2. Screen refresh. In my experience, NST fonts get lighter and lighter with each screen refresh until I look up a word or maybe 4th or 5th refresh resets it to dark again. Anyone else feel that? Do they do partial screen refreshes to save battery or something? Is there a way to turn that off? It seems very annoying.
Thanks in advance.
If you're wanting to change anything like that, you need to root your Nook.

On the Kindle app on my (rooted) NST, I have to long-press a word to get the little pop-up menu that allows highlight and notes as well as lookup. Nearly identical, step-wise, but it's a pop-up instead of a menu along the bottom.

Sort-of. You can enable the "Volume Buttons Control" option in the Kindle app settings, then use NookTouch Tools to map hard buttons to the volume buttons.

The trick for non-B&N apps is that most don't use the hard buttons. CoolReader and NomadReader are supposed to support NST buttons directly. Otherwise, you can re-map the buttons using NookTouch Tools, but will likely be limited in other ways. I think you'll just have to experiment with this one. I am not aware of a way to actually turn off the touch-screen, other than just not touching it.

I haven't found a way, and I'm not fond of the default! I see options to change the color scheme (white, sepia, black) and make the font larger or smaller, choosing between 5 size options.

It's to save battery, and my understanding is that apps have to explicitly make calls to refresh more frequently, so only B&N apps and a few others do this. I've read that CoolReader and NomadReader support the NST directly, including screen refresh options. There are threads on this topic elsewhere. Otherwise, one tip I read here was that you can force a refresh by double-pressing the 'n' key to toggle the B&N shortcuts menu. It's a bit kludgy, but it works.
All these factors considered, I've found the B&N reader the best for epubs.
Thanks for the responses. Rooting is not out of the question but I like the way it works for my purposes (sort of) so I don't want to do it if I don't have to.
Bob, I hardly ever take notes or highlight text. All I touch a word for is to look up or verify its meaning. I think Kindle does it right. Thanks for sharing the volume button trick. That seems pretty useful. As you said I will probably have to try rooting it and then I will see if what I get works any better than what I have. Otherwise I will put the stock software back and get back to the business of reading.

Rooting doesn't really change the way things operate, unless you want it to. About the only downside to rooting is that you have to be careful to block OTA updates until a root is developed or tweaked for the new software, as B&N often goes out of their way to kill root and "unauthorized" functions.

It really depends on how you like to use the side buttons. I'm using the left pair for B&N forward/back, and the right pair for Back/Menu, so I don't have any left for volume control. Since I primarily use the B&N reader, it works out OK. Interestingly, a few readers seem to be supporting the NT buttons natively now, but the Kindle app is probably not going to get NST support anytime soon.
You might also check out Cool Reader, as it can read non-DRMed .mobi files.

I like to use the Nook Touch for a dedicated reader too. I like both side buttons to be next/previous since that way I can hold it in either hand with my thumb resting on the top button. To be perfectly honest, the buttons feel kinda squishy and not very clicky. Kindle does that right too. Maybe I should just get a Kindle, heh.

When I tried Cool Reader on the Nook Color, the default layout and fonts were very poor. I am sure I can change all that, but its too much work. Especially considering there are so many alternatives with good layout out of the box. But I might break down and spend all that time rooting, installing, setting up, if I get everything I want. Maybe I should get the $80 Kindle that has no touch screen, clicky buttons and word definitions right out of the box. Seems like my dream device, heh...

Do you mean on the NC or the NST? On the NC, just use Nook Color App Manager to add apps from Market to the B&N interface if you like. You don't have to choose a launcher on every press. You can set a default. You just need to make sure you've got a way to get to the "other" launcher when you want it. I'm rooted on B&N 1.4.1 on my NC and have the 'n' key set to pull up the B&N shortcuts menu (stock). If I press home there, I go to the B&N interface. I have a shortcut to ADW EX Launcher on the notification bar, as well as Button Savior. In ADW EX, I've got an icon for the B&N launcher. You can change the 'n' key to pull up whichever you prefer (with no selection required).

$80 is for the version with ads, right? If you're looking for that exact of a functional match, I think that might be your best bet. The Kindle app works on the NST, but it's far from perfect. Oh, and Kindle cases might not fit either!
Of course, the day you buy a Kindle, you'll need an epub reader.
Bob,
Thanks for the tips on Nook Color. I did not know that you could add apps to the B&N interface. I will definitely try that as I like the stock reader much better. But then, since I got the Nook Touch, I haven't read ePubs on the Nook Color at all.

True. But Calibre wouldn't let me feel the difference.
So, finally I had some time to try rooting my NST. After waiting a day I installed the Kindle app from market and it is not even close to the stock reader in the ease of reading. That is the only reason I rooted mine and if that is not going to work, then I want to restore it back to stock. Will search for instructions on that next. But I did not like the layout on the kindle app. The font sizes just don't fit and the margins are too much and not adjustable. Finally the screen refresh is not the same. When I switched from the Kindle app back to the stock reader, it seemed so much better.

Well, I'm a little confused now. From your last two posts, it sounds like the NST is your preferred epub reader. I assume you've overcome your objections to the "not-Kindle" configuration then? In that case, and given that you're proficient with Calibre, why not just stick to epub format (converting your Kindle books) and read on the NST?
The only reason I'd bother with the Kindle app is if I had an extensive number of DRM-protected ebooks. Even then, I'd consider stripping the DRM and converting to a single format.
I find managing a single collection of ebooks per device much simpler, if only because I only need to remember one set of controls.
One other reason to keep your NST rooted is to gain more control over when wifi gets turned on. Other than that, and the ability to check email, I haven't added a lot to mine. Just a thought before you roll it back to stock.
Thanks for the comments and sorry for the confusion. I do like the stock reader on the NST. But I was just trying to fix the couple of annoyances mentioned in the original post. If I could get the dictionary on touching a word like the Kindle, I would be happier, for example.
But yeah, I rolled it back last night. Haven't copied any books yet because I started reading on the Kindle app on the Nook Color.
I know you've resolved some of your issues, but there was some discussion of readers for Android. My favorite by far is Mantano. It doesn't have the nice dictionary lookup of the kindle, but the rendering and customization are awesome.
There is a free version.

Ok, this is going to probably sound really dumb, but it's driving me nuts.
I've used Android for a few years now, and I've never sorted out if there's a way to scroll left and right in a text area.
No matter what keyboard I've used, I just end up deleting the whole dang thing, and typing from scratch, if it's text in a small window.
For example, if I typed a long url, and I realized after hitting enter that I must have made a typo. I'd like to go left to right in that bar and look for it easily.
I guess this has plagued me on every Apple and Android device I've owned. On RIM it was easy enough, and on older Symbian it was fine.
What the heck am I missing here?
Thanks!
Tap anywhere on the entered text - wait - there will be a blue arrow cursor below the text. Drag it whenever you want to start typing from.

Nifty. That works in the URL bar, but what about other input areas?
I can't seem to make that work in say the google search input window.

Ah, it's a Firefox issue then. I tried chrome and it works in that (though I never really use chrome).
Ok thanks.
I was hoping there would be a convenient left and right key option on the keyboard itself, so that it wouldn't matter what app I'm using, but I guess it's tied to the app itself. That kind of stinks. It's rather awkward in design.
Do you know of an alternative keyboard that supports that type of functionality? I like the "Swpe-like" setup in the stock keyboard, but I'd much rather have an easier correction method built in.
You can enable the function to move the cursor using the volume rocker. It's in Settings - Language and Input - and that option will be down below the input methods
I miss the big keyboard with arrows from HTC Flyer though - it's pretty awesome to use in portrait mode, though not as useful in landscape since it takes much more space than N7's does
And no, I don't know about other keyboard since I don't use them, I prefer stock

Excellent. That will work just fine.
Thanks a bunch for your help!
Hi
Got my £29 Nook ST delivered on Friday to complement my Kindle Keyboard 3G which we use a lot.
Originally I intended to use the Nook in its vanilla flavour, but having read that rooting was possible and the Kindle app worked, thought I'd keep all of my reading in the same place by installing the Kindle app.
So far I've done the following:-
- rooted successfully (NST 1.2.1)
- installed Gapps successfully
- installed the Kindle app by browsing play.google.com and "pushing" it to the NST
- sync'd up my books and read a few on the Nook.
I'm no programmer, but I have rooted both of my other Android devices, as well as installed custom roms and kernels on my phone, so in general things going sweetly and as expected.
There are a couple of simple questions I'd like to post though which will help me (and perhaps others) speed through the process of getting the device into a truly workable format
1) I installed the Kindle App via the play store - thus this is the latest version I suppose. Is there a "better" older version for using on the NST which will bring any benefits?
2) If I choose one of the launches (stock or ReLaunch) as the default, will I lose the ability to get back to the menus?
3) Is there a list of what the various button mapping options from Nook Touch Mod mean? They don't appear to make much sense, though I have successfully modified the page ups and page downs to be volume up and down, which works OK with the Kindle reading app
4) Do I need to have an SD card permanently in the NST for storage, or is that not necessary for books?
5) If all I want to do on the NST is either read books using the Kindle app or read books using the NST's core functionality, is there a neat and tidy way of hiding the ReLaunch launcher etc? Its all usable to me, but I could see my family getting a little stuck when using it, certainly compared to the simplicity of using the stock app or using my Kindle Keyboard
6) Some of the rendering of the font from the Kindle app looks a little less than precise. What can I do to improve this?
Thanks in advance for the help!

Not that I know of. Ask questions on specific options. You can use the Tap Left and Tap Right instead of Volume up/down so that the hardware page up/down buttons work for both the stock NST reader and the Kindle app.

Use NTMM to map your n button long press to ReLaunch. Then when you short press the n button and the B&N quicknav comes up tap on Home then click on the use as default checkbox and select Home. Now your NST looks like stock unless you long press the n button to get into ReLaunch. You could also remap one of the quicknav buttons to Kindle if others want to use Kindle without going through Relaunch.

I think I was meaning between the "ReLaunch" launcher and the "Stock" launcher. i.e. if I restrict myself to using one, how to I access the other.
Thanks for the rest of your help!

By the stock launcher you mean Home I assume. In any case use NTMM to assign a hardware button to whatever you don't want to be the default launcher and set what you do as the default launcher. I described how to make Home the default and still have access to ReLaunch in my previous post answering another of your questions. I'd recommend always assigning ReLaunch to some hardware button just in case you accidentally make something else the default you can get back to ReLaunch to fix things.

I always found that the launcher you chose as default is not persistent... that by power cycling you'd get a choice again. Could be just mine though?

If you check the box to use the launcher as default before selecting the launcher then it will persist across power cycles. That's how it works for me and there are a few threads here about people who have selected a default and can't get back to ReLaunch having to factory restore and reroot.
RichNote is a wonderful app.
I must be missing something right under my nose - how can I delete RichNote files that I've created?

That was the first place I looked - didn't see anything from RichNote in there. I do see QuickMemo files of mine.
In the RichNote app, I can see my saved files, but I can't find any way to delete them.
Ohhhh. Got them confused. Long click on the written note in app and select delete. Alternatively, open the note and select trash can.
Thanks - you got me on the right track.
For anyone else that might come across this thread, when using Richnote, the excellent LG-supplied app that you can open-up on top of other apps, there is no way to access the ability to delete or share your Richnote files unless you maximize the app. When the app opens in its default window size, the app does not offer any of these functions. I just had to explore a bit to figure this out!
I just noticed my backspace button on calculator doesn't work in window mode after adjusting transparency. Nothing works on it partially transparent, and backspace won't work at all after unless I maximize and minimize. Can you test yours?

Ditto on my Verizon model.
I like Quick Memo the best. The ability to draw on the screen and save snapshots is great.
I prefer Richnote widget so I can draw, text, attach, ect for more purposeful things. Use notebook when I get involved. Quickmemo for fast on screen draws right from home button. I use and like all three.
