[Q] HDMI flickering - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I generally watch TV in the morning by plugging an hdmi cable from my nexus 10 to my TV. Today, the display on the TV started flickering and I can't figure out why. I did a lot of troubleshooting already, and I think it might be an android problem, which is why I'm posting here.
Things I did:
1) switched cables. No change in behavior
2) switched hdmi input ports on the tv. No change in behavior
3) tried several apps and even just left it sitting on the homescreen. No change in behavior
4) switched streaming device (I also have a nexus 7 2013). No change in behavior. The nexus 7 does it now too!
So #4 got me curious. I connected my nexus 5 and now it plays with no flicker. That tells me it's not the TV.
The only common denominator here is Android 4.3. Was there some update recently that might have broken this?
P.S. I'm going to crosspost this to the nexus 7 forum in case anyone there has some ideas too, since it's affecting that tablet too.

I was just using my Nexus 10 with the latest 4.3 update with no problems using HDMI output. I might try and see if KitKat fixes the issue - you should be getting it within the next day or two on both.
Also, I'm curious - when I hook it up, i have a microHDMI to HDMI adapter and then use a normal cable. It wasn't clear from your post if you have one of those, but it might be worthwhile switching too, just for the heck of it. Stranger things have happened

I have two cables. One is a micro HDMI cable and the other uses an adapter. It didn't make any difference.

Hanging Out in the Dock

I ran into something a little odd yesterday. I engaged in a video chat with my brother using the new Hangouts app. I could not hear him... at least not until I removed my Nexus from the official dock.
I checked Settings>Sound>Dock>Audio and "For music and media" was not checked. Moreover, I can hear music and other sounds over the Nexus 7's speakers when it is charging in the dock. But it seems audio from video chats in Hangouts may be hardwired to the dock's audio output jack when docked (as non-sensical as that may seem).
Can't think of any other setting that might be in play here... has anyone else noticed this?
It has been quite some time since this was posted, but I just tried using my Nexus 7 (2012) in the dock to use Google Hangouts and I had the exact same problem. Did you ever find a solution?
Nope. At least none other to get rid of my Nexus 7 for a new one.
Sadly, the 2013 model does not even have pins for docking
I guess that's one app I will not be able to use on my 2012 Nexus 7 while docked.
I am using the orb as dock for it and it works pretty darn well.

[Q] Slimport causing sleep of death on 4.3?

Does anyone else experience the sleep of death bug (akin to what happened with Netflix) after having connected your HDTV through Slimport for a short while? It seems to happen regardless of what I'm doing on my phone, just having it connected for a short moment will cause it.
This is on stock Android 4.3 (JWR66V), whereas it was working just fine for me on 4.2. My phone is rooted, but there's nothing running that requires root access while this problem occurs.
Also, I'm using the "official" Slimport adapter, i.e. the only one that existed for quite a while.
Would hate having to send my phone back in, but alas that's what I'll do if it's just affecting me.
I've the same issues since 4.3 Everything was fine before with 4.2.2. When i unplug slimport from nexus4 i cant activate display anymore.
This hapepns sometimes after cahring, too.
So i think your device is ok, just an 4.3 fault like many other bugs
Thanks for the reply. So I'm not completely alone with this!
But I do find it odd that I could not find any existing discussion of this topic elsewhere on the net.. are there just not that many people making use of the HDMI feature or is the majority of people simply unaffected by this problem?
I'm not sure. I've the same issue with charging. I misspelled this on my first post. Same situation, unplug charging cable and i can't activate the display. I found a workaround for this issue, I unplug it only when the display is on. The latest OTA doesn't fix it. Maybe we should create a bug report on googles bug tracker.
There is a thread about this issue in Googles mobile support forum. You should post there, too. So maybe we get more attention about this serious problem. I can't post links yet, search for: "After 4.3 Android updated, the Nexus 4 always shuts off randomly !!! HELP!!!"
I'm having this issue with my Nexus 7 II. Very annoying, can't watch a movie without it disconnecting. Any fix for this?
Currently not, I hope that Kitkat will fix this
I'm having the same problem on 4.4
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks in advance
Same here on 4.4 but it only happens when my photo is low on charge.
E.G when there's low charge slimport works o.k but when I unplug it the phone dies and requires me to push the power button for 10 seconds to get the photo to work again.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Maybe we should dump Logcat to get the reason why it dies. It tried it several times but with no luck. When i received System log ouputs via adb, the phone doesn't die.

was found a solution for this problem?

[Q] HDMI audio

I was having an ongoing issue with the audio stuttering from time to time with the NP. I read on another forum that the fix was to get the rma handled from asus. Before I shipped it back though, on a whim I plugged it into my monitor. And to my shock no stutter. So it seems to me that my TV has a hard time decoding the PCM. Has anyone had any similar issues? Has anyone had any luck getting a USB DAC to work with this thing? I have one that plug and plays with multiple tabs and phones(running 4.4 and 5) but it won't work on here. I did try the Unleashed kernel, but no dice. The next course would be to try the rom that is on this forum. The only problem with that (if it does what I need it to do) I'm capped at devices for Google All Access.
Google claims to have fixed this bug in Android 5.1. We just need a damn image or build of it for our device.

That's something at least. I'll hold out for that.
Side note: Lollirock would stop playing audio when the usb dac was plugged in, but everything kind of just froze up forcing a reboot. So no dice
I've called ASUS and got no where. They said they've never heard of the issue and might investigate it. I didn't purchase it from the Play Store so I had to call ASUS. They aren't to bad when it comes to tech support.

Anybody having problems with the new android version 7.1.2?

Hey XDA..
I have just noticed that after the 7.1.2 it looks like my nexus player has lost the option to read from a usb NTFS harddrive. I haven't tried with FAT32 or exFAT but i know that NTFS used to work.
And i have noticed that the bluetooth is acting strange.. There is a huge delay with the controller. A delay that results in connection drops and sticky buttons (you press onces but the player will act as if you pressed and hold the button for a short while and go crazy all over the menu/game).
I liked the nexus player. It used to be a nice mediacenter. Not the best but very useful. And therefore im sad that it suddenly got like this.
Anybody having issues like me? Anybody have some solutions i could try and see if it helps? Factory reset maybe? (i havent done that since i bought it)
Mine won't read my NTFS drive either. I also had issues with apps crashing for the first day or two then it came right (possibly after a Play Services update).

Thanks for the input.
My has started to work again with NTFS drives over usb.. It apperently has some issues with usb 3.0 after the update. Dont know why. But suddenly after a few days it started work again.
But im still having issues with the controller

Having issues with the display image being distorted randomly and frequently..

I recently bought the shield off amazon, I have the regular 2017 version, not the pro. I set it up and connected it to my TCL 55US57 4K tv. I had manually set the first HDMI port to work as 2.0 instead of 1.4. I installed terrarium tv and mobdro for her as well as some emulator apps. About two days later I noticed that portions of the screen would be quickly distorted and flicker, it was random and sporadic, and it was very obvious. I tried swapping out the HDMI cable, switching back to HDMI 1.4 mode, tried on the three other available HDMI ports, and I even factory reset the device, but the issue persisted... I was able to get a quick replacement from Amazon, but the same thing is happening to the new device and it's driving me nuts. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
