[Q] to root or not to root? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im having trouble deciding if I should root or not.
For the most part I am happy with not. However I want to backup my apps and device settings to either my PC or a memory stick.
I figured I could attach a micro USB to female USB cable and stick a USB memory stick on in and back up to that.
Do I need to root the device for that?
Also I wouldn't mind editing a few saved game files.
What are the risks of rooting, other than invalidating a guarantee? I don't intend to flash the ROM.
Also if rooted, how easy is it to unroot if I had to return it in the event it needed a repair?
Thanks

I wouldn't root if I didn't need tethering. Still happy with stock but that's the only way to get hotspot to work. I know that doesn't really help with your question

So have we herd yet if we can " re lock" our phones after rooting. I know with my experience with the galaxy nexus that I could do that in case I had a warranty issue with verizon. That is the only worry I have with rooting especially with lg having a root checker or "root trip".

Factory cable

Let me get this straight if i were to make a factory cable then could I load right up to a recovery and flash a rom without doing anting on the computer right? If not please explain what it can do for an unbricked user.
Thank in advance!

Oh i was under the impreson that you could put a recovery in a folder the when you hooked up the factroy cable it would load the recovery oh by the way whats the eashest way to put the energy rom on my kindle and I dont whant to root unless neccesary.
can I even use a factory cable without rooting and can I put the recovery on there without rooting?
So you are gonna flash a rom but you don't want to root? Lol

YESSS! please help.
U can use a factory cable, to replace your recovery and remain on stock OS unrooted if you choose. U can change the bootloader or not as well(without it u need the factory cable to get into recovery). U can make backups, whatever.
As soon as u flash a different rom, u will have root. It wont hurt you, but it'll be there lol

ALL 100% of custom ROM's are pre-rooted, there is NO reason to not be rooted. You have to root in order to enjoy the better apps available. I've been here 5 years now and never heard of someone who wants a custom ROM installed without Root. It makes no sense at all...

There are countless threads on how to do this. Just search, the info is there.
If you want to "remove" root for security reasons or for whatever reason, uninstall superuser.

THX THX THX for all ur help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:victory::laugh::silly::good::highfive:
I think there is some confusion here as to what "rooting" means.
The term "rooting" is generally used in the community for the process of flashing a custom bootloader and recovery in order to gain root access to the device. This isn't really accurate as flashing a custom bootloader and recovery are 2 completely separate processes that just happen to generally be prerequisites to gaining root on many devices. It is completely possible on some devices to root the device without a custom recovery or custom bootloader and it is completely possible on most devices to flash a custom bootloader and recovery without gaining root access.
What becomes confusing to some is the widely known fact that rooting your device voids the warranty. In reality rooting is generally easy to reverse, removing a custom recovery and bootloader is not usually easy to do. Flashing a custom recovery and bootloader is really the reason that your warranty is voided, neglecting to install the superuser.apk to gain root is doing nothing to preserve your warranty. For this reason there really is nothing to gain from flashing a custom recovery and bootloader to install a custom rom without root access over installing a rom with root access. With root access you gain the ability to use many more advanced apps which allow you to take full advantage of the device it also allows you to have the option to modify system files which are normally protected which can allow you to manually fix some problems which may arise.
I hope this helps clear things up for some.

A few questions after rooting

First of all thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to make this rooting so simple. I mainly rooted this device to use my micro USB to USB otg and 32 GB flash drive. After rooting I have a few questions?
What should I do about future updates? Will the updates unroot my n7 or should or can I turn off this feature? Also I know busy box is needed for the root because it was pushed in the script but what is it exactly and what do I use it for? I understand SU but busy box got me scratching my head.
Finally where is a good post and app explaining a backup for this device just in case an update unroots me
Thanks in advance for any help and excuse the noon questions just that I know now I am only dipping my toe in this topic. Next I need to root my HTC Thunderbolt so I can hot spot this n7 instead of using fox file BT

When an OTA comes out, there will quickly be copies of it that a rooted device can use to get the same changes maintaining root. Not a big deal.
As for backing up, your biggest threat is not losing root, but losing the device, having it stolen or destroyed.
I use the following to ensure I can just get another and restore back to where I was quickly

I've used this twice now without any real issues to restore to a brand new device.

[Q] Rooting Nexus 7

Alright, so I got a Nexus 7 for x-mas (my first and only android device) and I love it. Recently i have been wanting to root but information/explanation has been hard to come by. So, I have a few questions.
1. When i received the device i did not unlock bootloader, after reading about unlocking it it seems that this wipes all the data from the device. How do i backup my apps/data/storage? If i copy all the files to my CPU and then copy them back to the nexus will it work? What about app settings, like my settings on Apex launcher? I've seen threads and apps that recover data after it is deleted? What's my best bet for backing my info and data up?
2. What is the difference in flashing a kernel and rooting an android? Are they the same? As far as i know flashing is reversible, but is rooting?
3. How do you root? I've seen things about utilities (nexus 7 toolkit) and I've seen things that just involve unlocking the bootloader (flashing? i think)
Sorry if these questions have been answered or this is the wrong spot for this, I'm new to the forum.

1) You can't really do a backup of app data before unlocking the bootloader, that's why it's recommended to do it right when you get. I have to wipe everything so i know how you feel.
2) Inorder to flash a kernel you need to root first.
3) You could use a toolkit to unlock and root( either nexus 7 toolkit or wugs') or if you want to unlock and root manually you can use adb, which is just a few commands for a nexus. Both are easy, the only hard part is making sure you have the correct drivers.
Hope i helped and good luck!

Dang, that really sucks. What all can i save? App permissions, any of that?
I was just looking around and noticed there are some Apps that save data/info, the ones i saw were Carbon and TWRP. Would i be able to save my app stuff that way?
TWRP is a custom recovery which you can use AFTER unlock and root and i have never used carbon so i wouldnt know.

I don't own a tablet, but I am a beta tester for a few projects here, I have to wipe all data, but the cool thing is after the first initial wipe, you never have to worry about that again.
A backup of your non-rooted device, I would say do your best with titanium backup, need an easier program? Try go backup pro or Clickfree backup.
Then try to restore. If it fails, retry.. I got that a lot, most game data saved is usually stored in /mnt/sdcard/Android/data or /mnt/sdcard/Android/obb
You can store that info on an external SD, using directory bind, you can find it on here, very good app if your phone/tablet sucks because its internal storage is 3.75gb. my dual partitioned and mounted 64gb sdcard works wonderfully, my games get 16gb to themselves.
Anyway to stay on topic, I want this, but also looking at an Asus, and a Samsung galaxy tab 2

First of all, TWRP can only be used after unlocking boot loader and unlocking wipes all data
I also unlocked boot loader after 2 months when I have many apps, so it is simple you copy all the data to your PC and you can do a backup of your apk's by sending them to a Bluetooth device by the help of a app ( Bluetooth file transfer) , you unlock the boot loader and send all apks back either by Bluetooth or by using stick mount when you are rooted , and restore all data,
Flashing a kernel requires to root first
You can either root by using root toolkit or by using adb fastboot method manually
Here is the link to a post of mine for rooting nexus 7 by adb fast boot method

Good luck,if you are unable to root or having any problem, reply and I will look into it

flash kernel and root are two different things.
after unlocking the boot loader, you can flash anything you want, including an already rooted system image.

RAZR m with energy ROM.

Installed energy ROM 3/14 and was wondering if super su can really remove Root. Would i keep my ability to use titanium backup?
Sent from my XT907 using xda app-developers app
Yes and No
It appears Super SU can provide a temporary unroot, but the way you would have to remove root fully and properly is to flash completely back to stock. May I ask why you want to unroot in the first place? The only reason I can think is that you plan on returning it for service under warranty. If this is the case, as you may or may not be aware, Motorola has an embedded a nice little root checker in the phone. I have read some conflicting posts about whether or not returning to stock resets the root counter, but you may face some trouble due to that. Perhaps someone who has attempted to get service after being rooted can chip in?
As for titanium backup, it will not work without root, because the app would be unable to access user and system files that hold your settings.

[Q] removing superuser su without root or USB Function

What is a good way to remove the super user app without root or USB function(hardware issue). I have to send my phone back in a couple days to get a new one and need to get rid of custom lock at the startup. I have the att i337. The only way USB works is in download mode.
You can use triangle away to get rid of the custom status and then use a root Explorer to delete the busybox files after that use SuperSu 's built in uproot to finish up. You might want to delete the busybox before triangle away.

The script files are not installed so I do not have root.
Sorry, misread your post.
You have to have root to remove the custom status.

Is there a way to root without USB ability on device? It will only connect to pc in download mode. All other USB options won't work because of hardware issue. I just need to find a way to root without usb. I do have a sd card and reader.
It's not a hardware issue. If it is connecting through download mode, it is either a driver issue, a port issue on your computer or the software on your phone is borked and you can ODIN it to fix it. This is not a hardware issue on the phone at all.
