[Q] A couple of questions before flashing rom. - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey.
i have n9005 i have rooted it already and i have some questions.
1.some roms have are only for MJ7 what does MJ7 means?is my device is MJ7 too?how should i know?
2.when i am flashing a rom will my device remains as sim free/region unlocked?

Hi there,
1. MJ7 is simply the last few characters of the firmware version of that ROM. To check your firmware version, it should be in Settings > About Phone and it will show your firmware somewhere.
2. Yes your device will stay region unlocked

1. You can either go to Setting > About or in your dialer, key in *#1234#, check under AP
2. Yes. But do take note if flash custom ROM will trip the Knox counter

You're fine to flash the ROM. ROMs that show any different firmware to yours simply mean that once you flash the ROM, you're firmware will change to the ROMs firmware. Just be sure to carefully read everything in the first post of the ROM thread so that you're a bit more confident with flashing the ROM and understanding the whole process

Did you try to flash the Telstra rom or the XSA rom?
I found flashing Telstra's rom doesn't seem to work...
Also, what version of firmware were you trying to flash?
You can't flash an MI7 rom on an MJ7 bootloader. Just goes into a bootloop... If by some miracle you get to android then usually wifi and phone WONT work. You need MJ7 (or higher) rom on MJ7 bootloader...
Make sure reactivation lock is OFF... You can end up with a brick otherwise..
thanks

- 1st, you cannot flash MJ7 over MJ9. Choose a higher firmware (e.g MK1, MK2, ML1, ML2...) to flash over MJ7.
- 2nd, donot flash carrier's firmware (vodafone). Choose unbrand firmware.

Not exactly PDA nor CSC nor MODEM... It is the Bootloader version, as you cannot overwrite a bootloader by the older one.
However the firmware usually comes with the "same version" for both the PDA and the bootloader. So in general you can also said it is the PDA version.
MK1. So I need to flash like MK2 and above

So far tried multiple roms but unsuccessful although it said PDA MK1 OR MK2. BUT I noticed that theses roms modems are mainly MJ7 and my current one is MJ9.
That may be the reason?
If any one is lucky and was successful in flashing any rom over the honkong TGY one please help me.

It would have been interesting to at least try some new test in the process - for instance I have seen some intriguing reports from N900W8 models where they have apparently installed some version of xnote (custom rom pre-rooted) without tripping knox presumably by somehow using stock Samsung kernel and stock Samsung recovery (I repeat, that was THEIR claim, not mine, but more research and testing on the subject would be nice).
I'm one of those people. I installed the Mexican update, then rooted using Cf autoroot, then installed CWM and flashed X-Note with Katturbine kernel and I'm still knox 0x0 :/

I am also on MJ7, N900t and I had have two questions if possible.
1. Do you recommend me to upgrade to kitkat then to have custom rom or just to root my 4.3 then to have a custom rom?
DrawnToLife
2. Can you please explain what you did step by step instructions to what you did, and if possible providing a link to the Mexican rom you referred to and the same CWM you used.
Thanks

That sounds very different from what I was expecting, and so far based on that I would say that it mostly seems to be a result of the N900W8 bootloader system rather than something very special that needs to be done when flashing stuff
Question specific for N900W8 - is it possible to downgrade MJ4 -> MJ1 on that phone? (since that would confirm that the W8 bootloader is quite different).

[Q] Questions from newbie, how to update note 3 after rooted

Hi
I just got my NOTE 3, it was already rooted with SUPER SU, and region lock free with Region Lock Away
Android 4.3
Kernel 3.4.0-1628120
Baseband Version N9005XXUBMI5
Build JSS15J.N9005XXUBMJ1
Questions that I have
How do I get updates? it seems OTA is not allowed, and installed kies and same issue not possible
I have checked in SAM mobile and for my country I have the fw available N9005VJUBMI7 , how do I install this fw? Can I just use Mobile ODIN ?
I appreciate your response..

Yes you can odin it, i suggest doing it through ODIN and not the mobile version. You'll have to re-root after

If KNOX is still 0x0, and you want to keep that, you MUST use Mobile Odin. With Odin and CF root KNOX will become 0x1.

It is 0x1, so it would be just Mobile Odin, or Odin and I should have no major issues moving to N9005VJUBMI7 ?
Once Kit Kat becomes available, would be the same?

The update process should be flawless. If you want, you can also flash polish firmware and have kit kat today, then you can flash a rom like X-Note 10. But if you just want to stay stock rooted, use ODIN to flash stock firmware and re-root afterwards

Thanks, I was still doing some research as I have seen some comments regarding current KK, having lots of bugs..
But for my future reference, I would just download KK and flash it with odin as well?, what about the X-Note ROM, i will need to do some research on this one, but if you can point me on some references will be great to start, as well of know issues, or downsides of this ROM

It's the same phone! The bootloader has nothing to do with anything, its only relevant when we talk about upgrading and downgrading. The guy just wants to upgrade to KK, he can go in xnote thread and there are instructions for the upgrade, and in case you didnt know, xnote is designed for 9005 and W8 is not officially supported, so next time you try to open your little piehole, do your research first

You can't come back to android 4.2.2. The unique u can do is install android 4.4.2 (latest one):
1. Log and sig in Sammobile.com
2. Download and unzip this firmware: HERE
3. Flash it through ODIN (you have the instructions in the URL I pasted u)
4. If you wanna root it, u will void ur warranty (KNOX: 0x1)
I assume the firmware your on has knox, to confirm boot into download mode and see if there is a reference to KNOX.
If you have knox you can not downgrade. I know 4.3 was safe for a while before knox got implemented but can't remember the last safe knox free rom on 4.3.

I'm pretty sure I uninstalled Knox. Does that not make a difference?
What is it that Knox is doing that prevents downgrading?
Knox is an app but tied into the bootloader deep down. If you've got it in the boot loader then you can not downgrade. It's the bootloader. When knox was fully implemented it bought a new bootloader. Any one on the new bootloader can not downgrade to the old bootloader unfortunately.

If Knox brought a new bootloader, and it was released with 4.3, surely I can at least downgrade back to 4.3?
Unfortunately you can't downgrade. As 4.2.2 was on the old bootloader. As I suggested boot into download mode, volume down and power button and see if there is a knox counter. If it says knox you have the new bootloader. If there is no reference to KNOX at all then you can safely install stock 4.2.2.

I still don't understand how it is that I can't go back to 4.3, since it uses the same bootloader as 4.4.

1- Could you point out why you didn't like this modem? Any problem or disadvantage?
From the end user's point of view, I think it is hard to distinguish between modem versions.
2- You can download firmware from sammobile, extract it to get modem.bin file and NON-HLOS.bin file to flash.
3- To get the latest firmware for your device, you can install Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app, then open 'Firmware Browser' menu.

Best Modem for me is the NF2 on NG2 Firmware
Hi all,
thanks for the answers.
I don't like this modem because it never goes in 4G (I have TIM) and often when I try to call it says "Not registered on the network", expecially when I end a call and I try immediately to do another call.
I don't want to change ROM because I need to root/unroot often to use SkyGo, so I need a ROM that can be rooted easily.
So if I understood well :
the best modem is NG2. Also for my ROM?
I need to use Odin to flash modem. Does it change Knox value?
I need to extract from the ROM, modem.bin file and NON-HLOS.bin. Where do I have to put in Odin to flash it?
Thanks again.
