I have a Sprint Galaxy S4 SPH-L720 "MF9" and I made these modifications months ago:
CF-Auto-Rooted successfully
Hotspot installed by TWRP
Since I've made these modifications, I will lose 4G LTE connection intermittently while tethering and I must toggle on then off Airplane mode to get connectivity back. If anyone has any insight into how to prevent 4G LTE intermittent failure or how to diagnose it further, please share. However, this isn't a huge problem, although it may be related to it.
My huge problem and the purpose for creating this thread is:
Recently, since about Nov. 1, 2013, I do not receive texts (sms/mms) until I send a text. Then after I send a text, I will be able to receive texts for an undetermined amount of time (at least 14 minutes). Basically, I can hold a conversation over texts but I must initiate it first. Then when I initiate a conversation, I receive all of the texts that have been "in queue" since the last time I was able to receive texts. Furthermore, the timestamps of these "late" texts are not the times which they were sent but actually the times that I received the texts. So I cannot tell when these texts were sent from the people texting me.
I also do not receive calls but I can make calls. I do not receive any notifications that I've missed calls. Once again, after I make a call (and let's say I hang up), I can receive calls for an undetermined amount of time. Additionally, I receive "voice mail" notifications on time so that's the only way I know that I've missed a call.
Some additional details:
I have not installed anything new that may have caused this behavior.
I'm not sure if this behavior only happens when I'm tethering.
I haven't contacted Sprint yet since they usually only ever suggest restarting/resetting the phone, which I've done.
The "towers" have been getting "upgraded" around here, so this as the cause has been what I've been telling myself up until this point. However, my mom's phone does not exhibit this behavior.
From my understanding, SMS/MMS and calling are done over 3G CDMA. So I believe this is where I should start in diagnosing the source of my problem. However, I do not know how to troubleshoot 3G CDMA connectivity. If there was some way I could "send" data every 15 minutes to be able to "poll" the server for new messages, I would settle for this ghetto "solution."
I would greatly appreciate the help!
Was this post too long to read or overlooked somehow?
SMS is dome over 2g and MMS can be done over 3G/4G/WiFi .
I really don't know what to say for your problem. As I would say to update prl and profile first by using. ##72786# in the dialer. Do this over WiFi. And don't be scared your phone will reboot twice on its own. Of this doesn't work then I would say to factory reset and go back to MF9 stock unrooted and see if that helps.

Thank you for the ##72786# tip. I've got to wait a while (referring to the undetermined amount of time in my OP) to see if it works.
I intend to upgrade from MF9 to MJA today. Hopefully either updating my prl/profile or upgrading to MJA will fix my problem!

Update: the tip did not work and I haven't upgraded to MJA yet.
I updated to MJA and problems are fixed.

Recently, my phone will stop receiving text messages until I soft reset. Before posting, I tried a hard reset to see if that would fix the issue, but that did not work.
Is anyone else having similar issues with text messages?
Things worth noting:
1. I can still send messages without issue, even when I can't receive them.
2. All other data services on the phone work without any trouble (email, marketplace, zune, etc)
3. It happens even when I have full service, so it shouldn't be a connection/network issue.
4. I have a class 2 16 GB sandisk installed, which has been installed since I got the phone in November (might try a hard reset without the card to see if that helps).
It's interesting that the problem persisted through a hard reset. Right now I'm trying to determine if there's a specific set of actions that can be taken to reproduce the issue, but I just wanted to see if anyone else had any thoughts.
**UPDATE**
So even after pulling the sd card and hard resetting the phone, the problem is still present. Guess I'll have to head on over to AT&T to get a replacement.
If you are having the issue, it looks like you are only able to receive 10 messages before requiring a soft reset :'(
Thanks
I'm having the same exact problem. While I was on the phone with the ATT rep, she even tried to send me a text and couldn't!
Yeah I just went through the warranty exchange process with at&t and a replacement is on its way.
My co-worker also has a focus and hasn't had any problems, and with the number of people on this forum and no other responses, I don't think it's a very widespread issue.
I'm glad I found someone else with the problem though! Solidarity man! It's incredibly annoying. I setup a cron job on my server to send me a text every 15 minutes so I know when they stop working.
I'm ready to scream. I have a Dell Venue Pro (Another Windows Mobile 7 Phone) sitting here that has been an issue since day with everything EXCEPT text messaging. I spoke with ATT rep and they "claim" its either two things for me:
1) Porting of my number still transferring. ITs been to Sprint, T-Mobile, and now ATT all within the PAST two weeks.
2) Having a Metal roof can screw up the signal. Which I think is false because I have NO problem sending out texts, calling, surfing the web.
Again, NOT a problem restarting the phone and receiving texts but after, lets say, 15 minutes and having 3 bars, it stops. Its just like how T-Mobile network acted with Dell Venue Pro with the Internet, it needed to be restarted every hour or so. I'm READY to scream! I CAN NOT believe there AREN'T others with this problem!
10 Message Limit
Oh man. Yeah the Venue Pro launch was pretty rough. I was holding out for that phone too and was going to switch to t-mo, but I didn't want to chance it with all the problems that were being reported.
I have finally found a pattern though! It appears for me that after restarting the phone I can receive 10 text messages before they stop. I found this out because as I mentioned in my last post, I setup my server to send me messages every 15 minutes. While I was sleeping, i hit my sms receipt wall and a bunch of messages "queued up". This morning I restarted my phone, and 10 messages came in, then no more. Restarted again, received another 10, and so on until all the queued up messages had been received.
So it would be interesting if you check to see if there's a hard number limit of messages you can receive.

I noticed it this morning. I was on the phone with another tech support rep last night that WAS NO help, only concluded with that, I'm suppose to go to one of their stores and switch it out with another handset. Problem with that is, I didn't purchase it from ATT since Amazon.com had it for a penny. So, that'll be a fun visit. <--sounds like I'm from the south, don't it? lol
I'm having SO much fun sending myself texts to see if it actually goes through and I receive it. Here's something to think about, the two weeks I had T-mobile, I sent out 5,689 texts. So, this feature is something I actually WANT.
Update: Swapped out the phone. I had to act like an idiot because they had NO record of my sale at the ATT store, which there isn't any since I bought it at Amazon.com for a penny.
Knock on wood, its working. Sent myself over 50 texts throughout 2 hours.
I just recently started having this problem. I didn't notice at first, I just didn't think I was receiving any text messages. I accidentally restarted the phone (crappy case) and when I started it back up I got 10 texts instantly...all from the previous day. So I thought, oh AT&T must have screwed up. A day goes by and still no texts (odd because I usually get at least 20 texts a day). So I try to send myself a text. No bueno. So I restarted my phone. 10 texts. Restarted again. 10 texts...all still from Monday (2 days ago).
I already had problems with cellular data (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867347), and now this. If this problem is being caused by the SD card too, I'm getting rid of it.

Yes, I have seen this on occasion. Seems to be random and relatively infrequent in nature for me right now though. One thing that I have noticed (and may or may not be related) is that wireless sync seems to stop working at the same time. A soft rest always makes the problem go away...
I had this problem with my 2nd focus (i dropped the first and shattered the screen) It seemed to work fine for a few hours after I got it, then stopped receiving. As soon as I'd reboot the phone, itd work till i sent about 10 messages, then stopped. I tried my sim in another phone, worked fine. So now i'm on my 3rd phone.
Id tried multiple hard resets and none of them helped - I had assumed i'd just gotten a bad phone. But it seems a more common issue than I'd originally thought. I'd tried initially to take out my SD card (Kingston 16gb Class 4) and it didnt help.
Just got this problem on my Omnia 7, so maybe it's an OS or carrier issue.

Interesting. I wonder if anyone else has had this issue on some of the htc or lg phones or if it's a Samsung only problem. I guess this means that it's not related to the sd card though!
I have since replaced my defective focus and have yet to experience any problems with the new one.
I believe I've figured out and need a few testers to verify fix. I too was experiencing same issue of not receiving more than 10 SMS text messages until soft reset. After multiple hard resets and eventual phone replacement by AT&T Technical Support, I decided to navigate the Diagnosis Codes determined to find a fix for you all. Long story short, I discovered and tested the setting that causes and fixes the issue as follows:
*#197328640#
1 Debug
8 Phone Control
7 Network Control
1 GCF
3 Setting Cancellation
End
Soft Reset phone (Reboot)
You can test by texting yourself (your mobile number)
Enjoy!

I'm not experiencing this problem any more, though I can't say for sure whether it was solved due to that diagnostic menu action or the Samsung firmware update I applied later that evening.

I hope you're fix works for me too. This has been very annoying.
Good luck everyone. If v1122 of diagnosis menu has been installed due to update you can get to it by *#32489# and click on "Back" to get where you need in the menu.
Reporting back.
As long as I'm in an area with good radio penetration, the fix is a godsend.
In areas with poor radio penetration, it's no change.
So, I'll say good work tyryanjr & ATT-US
You guys improved my love of the focus tenfold today.
I should mention I am using a Rogers Branded Focus, SIM Unlocked, Dev Unlocked (Chevron), NoDo, on SaskTel's wireless network in Saskatchewan. If you are on Bell or Telus with similiar issues, give it a whirl.
To my wireless carrier, please rectify the situation, ASAP!
Hi
I have just recently flashed my sprint phone to virgin mobile. Everything is working well except I am noticing some issue which may or may not be related to flash.
If i dont use my phone for while, some people may complain their calls going directly to vm without even a single ring. Even the sms are not being recieved either, but when i try to dial a number, then all the sms would show up coming all at same time with the original timestamp and after that phone would be working fine until I guess I leave it alone for some time.
Right after i ported the epic to virgin mobile, I also upgraded to Clean GB latest ROM. I dont know if the issue is related to ROM itself or maybe a network issue with Virgin Mobile.
The fact that when people call me and it goes directly to vmail, makes me suspect it could be network issue but sms getting the original timestamps making me believe it might have got to phone but never notified on screen.
Couple of years ago, i had same issue on Touch pro phone with Sprint and I remember going to a hidden menu and changing a value of how often the phone could poll the towers of any activity ...
Does anybody have any insight what might be happening. Beside this issue the phone is working in perfect order.
Thanks

This is SUPER interesting! Love every second of it. I've been meaning to write this same exact issue but I thought everyone would think I'm coo-coo. I'm glad you stepped up and said the issue. I don't have call problems I don't think, but I feel like text messages sometimes don't ever go through or get received. If only delivery reports worked for us on Virgin Mobile, and I'd have better insight. I think my issue may just be my crappy signal. Mind checking your cell standby under battery usage, click on it to see your time without signal? I hope to help you resolve your issue and learn along the way on how to improve on my own.

I have good signal all the time.I think it is more related to tower polling having maybe different setting. As long as i keep using the phone, everything works perfect, but if the phone goes for sleep for long time, then the problem starts to happen. I might call vm and talk to tech because they have setting in their system where they can increase the time before the calls goes to voicemail, it might work or maybe not.
Let me know if you do something and find fix for it.
I did some tinkering and found the setting i need to modify is
Slot Cycle Index & ACCOLC Setting . I have to find menu to perform that setting.
the next troubleshooting i need to perform is maybe prl file.
found accolc setting under ##3282# and advanced and last entry is accolc. It is value from 2-9. 2 being shortest and phone polls tower more quickly but it is also issue of battery tradeoff.
I switched mine to 2 and will run the test.
Also gonna put the sprint prl and see if that makes any difference.
I had the same exact issue for almost a month. The fix was super easy. There is a glitch that came with the EL30 update that causes a force close from the "reject with" if you have more than 5 reject messages. I only had 5 but the fix seemed to work regardless. All I had to do was go to menu, settings, call settings, reject with, and then menu button and I deleted all of my reject with messages. Then I reboot my phone and I was now receiving calls just as I used to before the update. Haven't had a chance to see if txt messages are working yet.

I am also experiencing this problem. I can send texts and otherwise use data to connect to websites and such, but cannot make or receive calls. When someone calls me, it goes straight to voicemail. When I make a call it does not even start ringing, or beep at the start of a call to indicate the connection.
I had this issue when i first got my phone. i had to call verizon and they updated something on their side and reset a few things.

Part of me thinks this wouldn't be a bad thing to have, just in case that pesky Ex decides today is the day she wants to call you. lolz
Nothing Worked
If anyone else is facing this problem, I would like to say that all Verizon could do was send me a refurbished phone. Even after a factory reset and resetting the network (on their end) worked. I hope this problem doesn't affect too many people.

I had an issue with my S5 connecting to 4GLTE (Because of something stupid I did playing around). Chat give Verizon a ring (or chat with them on their website) and they will have you do the following:
1. Turn off WiFi.
2. Power down your phone
3. They will resync the signal (and do other secret things)
4. Power up your phone.
5. Your phone will reconnect to 4GLTE, the radio will then recycle, then connect back.
I've had zero issues since I did this a few days ago. Wouldn't hurt to try. Have your IMEI number ready for them incase they need it.
Solution, sort of

Didn't work for me unfortunately. I ended up going back to Costco and swapping it out for a new one. Back in business....for now. Thanks for the help.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5, 4G LTE, Verizon it can make calls and send text fine the problem is that it cannot receive calls and text. Grateful your assistance in resolving this issue.
I haven't had the issue for a while but I had to get a new phone from Verizon .
Hey guys, so yesterday I had to reflash to my stock g30v firmware on pe1. After being rooting since late june, Went by for a day and a half not noticing I wasn't receiving any sms messages. Tried to wipe cache, many reboots and many apps to no avail. Always showed "mobile network not available." Yet I still had 4g and was able to go on social media and my chrome browser. After I odin'd back to stock I received over 75 new sms messages. Stumped.
Want to re-root again but with my job, I can't risk having this happen again
Thanks in advance
Did you do a factory reset yet?
As stated in the first part of the op, die to this I had to reflash to stock, starting fresh. That's when I got a days and a half with of sms messages, everything is back to normal, but was wondering if anyone else had this issue. Want to re-root but can't if this is gonna happen again
What i've found after root is that i have to make a phone call after rebooting or i dont recieve calls/texts or have capability of sending texts untill i make a call yet Data still works..

I had this issue a lot with U firmware so I am sticking stock. Actually I just got the no signal icon and 4g data OR when I got voice working with sms a 3g w/roaming icon.
Some texts won't come through I also am getting repeat texts. Some voicemails either. I called Sprint to refresh on there end and all of a sudden everything comes through at once. Some of the messages were 4 days old. Wtf. My first reaction is to to be pissed of at Sprint cause I can't stand the network. So my question is should I contact essential?
I was literally about to post this same question. I think it has something to do with our preferred network type/enhanced lte mode/APNs or some variation of it. My only work around for now is using Google Voice, however MMS is still giving me issues.
Maybe it is a combination of essential AND sprint! Following this thread in hopes that we can figure out a fix.
Edit: I wonder if the issue will be resolved once we receive the update. I read that we can sideload it but I haven't got around to it yet. Have you updated yours?
It's Sprint. Used the have problems with my Nexus 5 but haven't had any issues with the essential. Just as a test, check your signal when you have the issues and see if you can get the sender to do the same thing. My mom, who has terrible signal at her house, will send me double texts sometimes. But if she is out and about, no issues

I originally hadn't had this problem. Just got an RMA replacement today and was having this problem on the new one. I updated the profile and the problem seemed to go away. But I've only received 2 factor authentication texts so far so not really comfortable saying it's fixed yet.
But if you want to try it:
1. Go to Settings
2. Tap About Phone
3. Tap OMADM Updates
4. Tap update profile.
Updating prl here would be worth doing too.

I am still having this issue of duplicate texts. My temp fix is using Google voice and turning off the messages notifications. However, I had to create a Tasker profile to notify me when I get mms.
I've done all the updates to no avail.
I am not experiencing any of the issues being mentioned on this thread. Had my phone almost a week now and no issues at all. Texts and calls, etc all work fine. No duplicates.
