Alternative root methods - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I understand designgears shut down the other thread. But did he ask for his exploit to no longer be used? I know he put up a thread on how to apply it to other updates so other devs could get it going once the updates rolled out. Just curious why with all the skepticism with kango root no one has modified the new mj7 files?

What do I have to do when the real froyo comes out if I'm rooted

Question is pretty straight foward. Do I have to unroot? Do I lose root if I update and have to wait until the real froyo is rooted?

Very quickly (perhaps hours) after the official Samsung update becomes available OTA, one of the developers here will surely post a stock rom for Froyo that is already rooted and Clockwork Recovery ready. There will probably be versions flashable by both Odin and Clockwork. Custom roms will be updated soon after that.
To actually answer your question you would most likely be safe with just using odin back to an older build 2.1 then let the ota take over after you boot in to your homescreen.
However, answering your question completely. Losing root is a big maybe better yet a most likely. There is a root already out that i'm almost positive will work with the official 2.2 also though.
What if I just want to update to froyo using my phone and then root later?

That would be a bad idea because it's possible that samsung/sprint will have patched all the currently known root exploits. Most likely there will be a flashable zip available on xda within hours of release that will let you maintain root. The froyo update can be altered easily to maintain root but if you use it unmodified to update and then expect to reroot you will likely be screwed.
So far I have yet to flash one OTA that has intervened with root...though doesn't the exploit effect ADB which google needs to fix..I dont think its that simple to just patch up..
If someone is rooted but has not modifed their phone in any way or removed any stock apps, would they still be able to receive OTA?

There have not been any major OTAs yet so I don't see why that would be much of an argument that this huge OTA won't kill root. We had OTA's on the hero that preserved root and others that patched it. If you want to go ahead and take your chances with the OTA be my guest, but I was just trying to let the OP know that the risk to reward ratio is way to high in my opinion.

The ops question is whether or not the OTA would not work if he is rooted..similar to removing stock apps..hence I answered based on that, not maintaining root...

Yes u will still get ota and it should work fine. U might need to reroot after but that's all. The 2.2 ota might break root on ur current setup, but I don't think the update will patch the root exploit so u should be able to run the same oneclick and get root again.
how about we wait till it happens? it could all change depending on what the OTA update does to our phones. The advice has always been wait ... Wait.. and wait.. when it is safe then do the OTA.

Maybe you should try reading the OP again. It says:

He was asking a lot more than if he would get the OTA. I answered his question and gave some advice. You chimed in with some crap about never having lost root with an OTA. That was crap advice so I responded.

Blocking OTA

Droid2 Global, rooted stock rom. I'm worried about OTA updates. I want to block them (I already received one, which required me to re-root). I'm worried that future updates will disable the method used to root.
I presume that the available roms have OTA disabled? Unfortunately switching roms isn't an option for me right now.
Rename /etc/security/otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.bak and the OTA update will fail to validate and therefore not load.
I could have taken the update and rerooted almost as fast as I took you to type your post. Why is simply rerooting such an affront to so many people? Don't seem like much of a big deal to me.

His concern was losing the ability to reroot if moto chose to mess with the D2G's rooting method. I don't really see them going to those lengths but that was his concern not simply not wanting to reroot.

It sounded to me like the same thing everbody was worried about with the d2 OTA updates.

So is it best to allow the OTA updates and then just root again, or to stop them from happening? I read somewhere that renaming the otacerts.zip file is not a good idea and can reduce battery life. Are there any other ways to prevent OTA updates with the stock ROM? If you get an OTA update, will it cause any problems or does it just unroot the phone? Thanks.

Updates after Rooting AT&T G2 ?

If I root the phone using below, do i receive updates from AT&T ? Does it break the software ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45692679#post45692679
Yes you will NOT be able to receive the updates from AT&T. You can restore to stock if you want to take the update, or you could wait a few hours till the devs here strip it, root it, make it better in every way, and then upgrade to it. Either way, carrier updates shouldn't keep you from rooting if you want to.

Is there a step by step guide to restore to stock for AT&T ?
A bit of searching will really help you answer all these questions without creating a new thread for them but... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476

Lost root from OTA 9.30

Has anyone keep root after the OTA 9.30. I mistakenly forgot to backup root and unroot then take the update. I just backup root and then took the updates and now I am not root anymore. Can some help me with that?
I need help getting root back?

Is your bootloader unlocked? If it is, try flashing SU in recovery. This should re-root you. Otherwise, you might be stuck for now. I'm sure the devs are diligently working on a new root exploit, but for now you're stuck.

I am not unlocked but what I am going to do is try to re-root with the same software. I will keep the forum posted with my progress and process.

Edit: wrong section...
The devs are most likely not diligently working on a new exploit at this point. This phone is last year's model now. This is why you always protect root before an ota. Or just don't take. Most likely your screwed with a stock phone now.

I Rooted my S4 - how do I make sure OTA doesn't unroot it?

Hi,
I just rooted my AT&T Galaxy S4. I used the method with TowelRoot. Everything seems to be good and as far as I can tell I am rooted. My concern is that if AT&T sends an update it will unroot my phone. Is that true? How can I prevent it?
Also, what are some things that I can now do with my rooted phone? I am using Tasker and have a little more power there. I might put on CyanogenMod, but not just yet.
Thank you for the suggestions.
no time to research that atm
but, use Titanium BackUp and delete apps that have fota and fwupdate or fw upgrade. that should do it.
there's a specific list somewhere
In the first posts of the All Things at thread. Talks about block ota update.
