Updates after Rooting AT&T G2 ? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I root the phone using below, do i receive updates from AT&T ? Does it break the software ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45692679#post45692679

Yes you will NOT be able to receive the updates from AT&T. You can restore to stock if you want to take the update, or you could wait a few hours till the devs here strip it, root it, make it better in every way, and then upgrade to it. Either way, carrier updates shouldn't keep you from rooting if you want to.

Is there a step by step guide to restore to stock for AT&T ?

A bit of searching will really help you answer all these questions without creating a new thread for them but... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476

Now Rooted. Kiss OTA's goodbye?

Once rooted, even if running the stock ROM with su permissions, will I be able to even receive OTA updates (Froyo)? Or be solely responsible for flashing the firmware myself? Had a G1 before this but I ended up rooting it after all the updates to 1.6 had been sent out, so I'm unfamiliar how the world of rooting and OTA's collide. I would prefer to do as little modding as possible, even though my vibrant is much more of a high end phone than the G1, it got to a point where I was constantly flashing my phone with new mods and hacks and roms, and it got kind of frustrating having little things wrong here and there. I got my adfree so far, thats enough to make me happy for now.

I'm sure right before the update becomes available you'll hear about it and you can always unroot ...
if you install the OTA, you will download the OTA (which is a NON ROOTED update) therefore making your phone get UNROOTED. now, you WANT do avoid installing the OTA's because they will unroot you, but since you aren't running a custom rom on your phone, you WILL get the OTA from t-mobile, you just have to force urself to DECLINE the install (if you want to keep root) you can update to the OTA release if you want to get rid of root, but if you wait a couple days, someone will have hacked a rooted version of the update.

or you can just re-root...correct?
most of the time when an ota update comes out they patch the exploit used to root... this probably will not happen with the galaxy s series phones... 1)Samsung intends to sell 10 million of these phones... 2)It wasnt an exploit, it was left open to begin with
I'm not even sure if T-mobile cares. They allow their customers to post information about rooting their phones on their own forum.
I would post the link but I'm not allowed until my account has been verified.
oh lol, the way i worded my post was inferring that the new update would have "patched" the way to get root, but your responses make me think otherwise lol.
Better safe than sorry if Root is important to you. Wait for a guinea pig to update and verify if root is still an option or not.....
I was wondering the same thing too, but I have deleted most of the bloat ware that came with the brand. So after the ota and unroot, will these programs be reinstalled?
And if I did a factory reset would it restore the bloat ware and unroot the phone?

Is add free really that important? If you don't want a 3mm bar on your screen buy the app. I click the add every time I open an app that is free. If you don't then all the dev will make apple apps... Just kind of selfish if you where to ask me.

Looks like this is the case for the moment. Maybe we will see something soon though, but I still would like to know about my questions.

Rather then making another thread about this, id just like to ask it here.
i know this has been asked about a million times, but i need to make in a million and one.
im rooted, clockwork recovery, mobile ap installed, and JAC kernel. I do not have any custom roms installed. Because of the custom kernel, im guessing that will keep me from receiving OTA?

Can't update to MF3

Anyone having issues with getting the ota MF3 update? I've tried updating my software on my phone but it says my software is up to date. I have set my clock forward several times but I still can't get it to update. Also, Samsung Kies (which is such a piece of crap) says my software is up to date even though I have mdl. Anyone had any issues with this and have a fix?
i'm assuming you either not rooted or are rooted and dont care about losing root?
if you're rooted and want to run MF3, iB4STiD has a loki'd MF3-based debloated rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280556

That is correct. I've had some issues with my wireless and this update is supposed to fix some wireless issues.
if you're rooted: i would research and try one of these MF3-based roms. any changes you may be looking for should also be contained in that rom. it will be rooted, hence allowing you to keep root as well as the option to revert to any other rom you may want to try later.
if you're not rooted and dont care about root: you'll have to wait until you receive the update. when that happens, kiss the possibility of root goodbye. you may not care about that if the wireless issue you have is resolved. however, if that issue is not resolved in the MF3 update, you cannot root and try another rom nor revert to a previous firmware version.
Are you wanting to root or flash custom roms?
Yep same here stock att s4. Of 4 phones two updated to mf3 and two didnt keep saying up to date. Not sure why...did att stop Rolling out the update?
Im happy with stock...not intention of rooting (though I have rooted my epic 4g in thw past). Using holo launcher to hide touchwiz. (I dont think it has to do w that)

I have no intention of flashing custom roms but I would like to root in the near future. Fixing my wireless issues trumps rooting though so I have to wait for a new root to come out that's fine.
If you are on MDL, and you have no intentions of rooting right off the bat, and you want the MF3 update, make sure your status is set to official and manually move the date up 1 day, to force the update.

hehe its random, just every now and then, check, push date up ever so often. That message is they haven't pushed it yet, your right, you can bet they want you on it.
Be careful about advancing date yo far ahead....one u advance u have to keep advancing further and further (havent found a way to reset that date counter with stock)

If you don't have anything constructive to say then please don't say anything. Like I said, I've had wireless issues that I'd like to get fixed. Yes, I could get the rooted version of the update but I've never flashed a new Rom and I have no desire to just so I can get the update.

This forum is for the AT&T Galaxy S4 and I posted my issue in the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting. I'm pretty sure my issue constitutes Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting. I posted here because (for the most part) people on Xda know what they are talking about and I wanted to see if anyone else had this issue and has a fix for it. You don't think I've looked around the AT&T forums? Once again, if you don't have anything constructive to say then don't say anything. I'm just trying to find a solution to a problem. Just because I choose not to root my device or flash a different ROM to it doesn't mean I don't have a right to post here. I may do so in the future, but right now I don't feel a need to.

My Son just got his update this morning on the I337 stock AT&T... FYI
Put your time to correct, trust me they will get you!

Help a noob out!

I just ordered this phone and have some last minute questions.
Should the first thing I do when I get the device be to root it?
Will I loose something if I decide to use it straight out of the box and then later decide to root?
I kinda get the impression that you have to do a factory reset after rooting, am I correct assuming that? If so I might as well begin with rooting.
And lastly, if I root will I be able to receive updates from LG and installing without it messing up the phone?
Sorry for all the questions, even though I've been using Android for several years I really haven't rooted before, so just want to be safe
Anyways, thanks to anyone who wants to teach me and put my worries to rest

If you root you'll lose the opportunity to get OTAs but you can just install them as a stock ROM that's been updated to it.
Thanks for the quick reply! Think I'll have to research a bit more before I make a decision

[Q] Recent OTA update

I am rooted with TWRP and flashed the G-Flex mod for the dual window. Stock Verizon.
I currently love my phone setup right now and don't want to have to return to stock, so I have a few questions about this OTA:
1. What is in the OTA, and is it worth taking?
2. Is there a way I can completely ignore the OTA and get it to stop reminding me?
3. If I do decide to take the OTA, will OTA rootkeeper allow me to OTA update and stay rooted?
4. If I do decided to reset my phone to stock, I should follow this guide right? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
Thanks for the help.

Rayglobe 3.2 also have dual window.
I wouldn't take the OTA since you have custom recovery (TWRP). I'll let someone with more knowledge chime in but don't take it.
Theres a certain apk you freeze in order to stop it from loading the OTA reminder but it depends on your phone. Some carriers are different.

thanks, I'll try to find the apk to freeze. I won't take it, but it seems like it keeps popping up saying its going to do it at a scheduled time, and I'm just hoping it won't do it overnight when I can't stop it.
Is the process for removing root or TWRP much harder than the process for setting it up? If its not too much trouble I can go back to stock for the update and reflash all my mods, etc.

not sure, it seems to be able to reroot. Also read something about rootkeeper app, but cannot confirm it's effectivity.

I Rooted my S4 - how do I make sure OTA doesn't unroot it?

Hi,
I just rooted my AT&T Galaxy S4. I used the method with TowelRoot. Everything seems to be good and as far as I can tell I am rooted. My concern is that if AT&T sends an update it will unroot my phone. Is that true? How can I prevent it?
Also, what are some things that I can now do with my rooted phone? I am using Tasker and have a little more power there. I might put on CyanogenMod, but not just yet.
Thank you for the suggestions.
no time to research that atm
but, use Titanium BackUp and delete apps that have fota and fwupdate or fw upgrade. that should do it.
there's a specific list somewhere
