Idle Battery Life / WiFi - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" General

Is anyone else having issues with overnight battery loss? I lost about 10% overnight in around 7 hours. I sideloaded BetterBatteryStats and I see that the WiFi is left running the entire time even if there are no running apps (and no email has been set up either). I know that on most (non-Kindle) devices there is a "wifi sleep while screen is off" setting but I don't see it on the HDX.
How is everyone else's battery life while the screen is off?

you can side load idle time connection manager which you can configure to turn off wifi after a set amount of inactive time.

Thanks! Works great. However i get 2 FC popups from gapps (which i have also sideloaded) whenever connecting to a network, suddenly they have become more annyoing. Hopefully someone will figure out how to fix those at some point

Ok on this HDX 8.9 battery life has been great. Was over 60% wifi off. Left it off or just over one day. I tried to turn it on but show'd one red bar on battery. Had to plug in and let it charge before I could use it. WOW this sucks.
No wifi nothing else left on and powered off not just simple click off.

I don't know why you guys are getting bad battery life while idle. I leave mine on for days and still have 90% three days later (after a full charge). Maybe it has to do with the fact that you have gapps on it?

It's killing my battery so I'm freezing it also. Anyone figure out what's it's for and what requires it?

If you are rooted and have installed android firewall and are using it in white list mode and did not allow all the Amazon services then some of them will repeatedly try to connect. This was causing my Kindle to be awake a lot until I renamed the apk in my rom slot. Not sure if this matches your situation but it helped mine. The service in question is inside Com.amazon.tcomm.apk.

Oh yes, that should help. Didn't think of renaming it. Will try that next if the freezing didn't work but so far it seems to be working.

[SOLUTION] Found a fix for battery draining

This doesn't work. Ignore this thread please. Android OS and Wi-Fi Sharing reappeared after a few hours even though I was in bed sleeping and not using the phone.
For those who have problem with Android OS and Wi-Fi Sharing draining battery, this is for you.
I think I have found a solution. I need someone to try it out with me. So far so good. The main culprit is Kies Air. If you are not going to use it, please do not tap on that app at all. If you can, hide it. Once you tap it, it will remain running forever even if you shutdown and restart your phone. So what can we do?
First, Factory Reset the phone. Then, make sure you do not launch Kies Air after Factory Reset.
That's all. Now all you need to do is monitor the battery graph and let us all know your findings. You should not see Android OS, Android System high up in the list. Wi-Fi Sharing will no longer appear in the list that consumes battery.
I have success with this.
How long have you had it running like this?

why dont you just end the service in the settings?
I use Kies Air extensively. But it does not really keep running in the background here.
I dont keep my wifi on unless and until needed. SGS2 is very quick to get IP than my older phones, so i turn it on when needed from widget. Also you dont need wifi on before launching Kies Air. It will turn it on and off by itself.
when i close kies, it asks me if I want to disable wifi and it closes properly.
I tab of ATK and it closes on me never to turn back on by itself.
The only programs that keeps coming back are hubs and iplayer which to be honest does not seem to eat juice much. I will be getting rid of them soon enough.
now that i think of it the nexus one doesnt have kies air does it ? and it has the same android os issue?
Kies air shutdown wont help, did not even have it installed and still have android os bug
I've had both android os and wifi sharing eating battery, and I've never touched Kies. So it's not that.

not a soluton for me.. becuase i do occasionally use the wifi sharing so that i can tether over wifi.. the solution i am using which is kinda kludgy is to freeze the two wifi sharing apps with titanium backup (requires root).. works for me.. when i want to tether i will unfreeze them.. hopefully this will fix in a firmware update.
sorry guys I am late to the party.
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED to see for "Android OS" and "Android System"?
My phone right now is at 4 h 15 min (I charged it before going to bed, yes I sleep 4 hours a day). The phone did not do anything, but sounded Alarm to wake me up, and I had screen on for like 10 minutes total so far, plus the Alarm sounding and vibrating.
I have AOS at 37% up top, and AS at 3% on the bottom. This is not right?
I used Kies many times, but restarted the phone after the last time, and that was before the phone was charged last time.

my AOS is at 6% now - it was at 47% this morning... but i think that was because the screen was 0% whilst i was alseep, so yes your 37% is waaaay too high, mine was up at 15% but since i installed juice defender it has dropped to between 6-8%
Android OS / Android System percentages don't really matter that much - even if the device had a week long battery life, the percentages still have to add up to 100% - so something always has to be using battery.
The main problem seems to be the 'wifi sharing' and 'wifi sharing manager' services, which start up whenever you connect to wifi...

All these while will be only suspend, events/0 and android system. Both suspend and events/0 average on 35-40%.

You mean you're connected to Kies Air and wanted to play with your phone while waiting for files being transfer? The answer is yes, press the home button and do whatever you want, it will not be disconnected.
Sorry, I meant when I finished and exit the program, something continues to run in the background (wifi share?) that drains the battery?
Damn...
Android OS @ 46% followed by Display at 21%. Android system however, at just 4%. Yeah 46 is just way too high...
Oh.. my watchdog didn't report any app misbehave after I done with Kies Air.
My wifi sharing will keep on running on background at 3% regardless of whether I connected to Kies or not. Frozen it but it still there. LOL. Weird.

Battery drain since latest update - solved!!!!!

Since the July 8.44.11 update my tablet in standby drains a good 3% or more per hour despite wifi off on screen off. This setting previously did not drain more than 1-2% overnight.
Nothing changed other than updating firmware.
Did some investigating to find the source of the drain.
See below as I think I found the source. Tablet was not getting into deep sleep.
OK I have solved this!!
I rooted the latest update and performed an experiment.
I used CPU spy to measure sleep.
With stock rooted the device was not going into deep sleep on 8.4.4.11
Then with titanium backup I froze the following to programs preventing them from running:
Mobile data and mobile network configuration.
Low and behold I now get deep sleep when testing this with CPU spy.
I suspect this wasnthe same source of battery drain in standby that occurred with the iconia tablet before a software update. Seems these programs are preventing deep sleep. Based on their description they seem designed for mms and sms.
Perhaps they were put there for the upcoming 3g enabled.models.

What do you have MobileDock Battery saving mode set to? Having this unchecked means your transformer is constantly spending power waiting for you to make a key stroke. If you have a newer keyboard or no keyboard you can check this and save that 2-3% per hour.
I do not see any additional power drain with the newer update.
I have observed increased battery usage in standby mode after the update.... an the average of 3% per hour. There has been no change in installed apps between the firmware update.
I rebooted the TF multiple times over the last few days without any improvement. Out of desperation, I plugged the TF to the recharge, and switch the tablet off. I let it charge up, and now the battery drain seemed to have reduced to pre-update rates. See screen capture of before, and after with the power-off-and-charge in the middle.
Observe also the CPU seems to be constantly awake even though the screen is off and in standby mode

2 observations I have made.
CPU spy shows I am not going into deep sleep
When I look at applications under the settings, under running services there is mobile data and mobile network configuration which to me seem more appropriate on a phone.
The iconia tab had issue with similar type process draining battery before an update. I wonder if the pre 8.4.4.11 update if those processes were running.

Experiencing the same, am on prime 1.6 (default kernel) and last night i removed charger when it was on 100%.
This morning battery was on 87%, this was after 6 hours. More then 2% per hour.
I have wifi setting on off when screens turns off.
When checking the applications in the battery info screen i saw "Maps" on top of the list. So when leaving to work i killed "Maps" hoping that it was the cause of the drain.
When returning home about 9 hours later battery was on 67%, so still about 2% per minute. That's even more then my SGS 2 with 3g on. So something is really wrong.
I saw an android bug listed, that after a reboot, the wifi sleep setting gets reset. Make sure that you select the wifi off when screen is off setting after rebooting.
I really want to help with this because there are a lot of people who are having these battery drain complaints and I just can't figure out the differences between my stock tablet and theirs. My tablet shows a very slow beautiful drain overnight last night.
My applications "All" shows the network and wireless applications also, however my running applications list is extremely small (Settings, The Weather Channel, ASUS Sync, com.asus.keyboard, Google Services, Music, Maps, MyNet, ASUS MyWater(asus live background)) so I can't say that network services are affecting my battery.

My TF has the same discharge profile as your device before the last 3.1x update. also, the CPU was never active in sleep mode. After the upgrade, the AWAKE bar is always active, and as you can see from my screenshot above, kills the battery during standby

Am trying this now, will report back. You did not charge it completely when turning it of as i understand from your capture.
Under google services, you might want to turn off picasa sync. I was told to do the same an I believed it has helped. Also try turning on airplane mode and see if it helps.
I have mostly unchecked all of the sync options which has helped in that my drain is like 2% overnight ~8hrs although I would like it to be even less .....

Inside that folder you will have checkboxes for everything Google that can be synced. IMO Calendar, Contacts, and GMail are all that is needed to keep you up to date. You can manually sync everything in the settings menu of the program you use less frequently.

This is a great find. I just got my TF four days ago, so I haven't payed attention to battery usage, etc., but I performed these steps, so I hope to get maximum battery performance.

Battery drain on nexus 4 since yesterday

So, yesterday I noticed a sudden battery drain on my nexus 4. After checking battery it showed that AndroidOS takes over about 50% of the battery usage. It also showed that time awake was pretty much the same as the amount of time since I unplugged the phone, even though I kept my phone in sleep mode for the most of the day. After some research I downloaded better battery stats and it showed that from the moment I turn the screen off a process called suspend_backoff runs pretty much the entire time. Eventually I got it down to wifi. If I turn off wifi there are no processes running after the screen is turned off (or if there are they are 30 seconds tops), but the moment I turn wifi on suspend_backoff runs pretty much the entire time screen is off. I tried removing all of my apps, as well as doing factory reset but nothing helps. The moment I turn wifi ON this suspend_backoff consumes pretty much all the time during screen off period. Is anyone experiencing anything like this ? I have 4.2.2 on the phone and I havent' seen this extreme drain until just yesterday.
I experience the samething. Android OS would drain as much as the screen time.
I narrowed it down to the suspend_backoff. But the weird thing is that when i'm at home on my home wifi, suspend_backoff doesn't seem to drain anything at all. But when I'm at school, suspend_backoff kicks in.
Anyone help?

how did you narrow it down? Im having the same problem!
This is caused by a kernel wakelock. A bad mobile connection make battery drain worse... using WLAN nearly fixes this problem.
Thought this problem has got fixed in 4.2.2, at least battery life got improved and the wakelock reduced.
If it is appearing since yesterday, it is triggered by a app often waking the phone up using mobile data (that's why fixed with WLAN) and prevent the phone from getting into deep sleep as fast as it should.
hope i could help.
I use Greenify to hibernate every single user installed apps, then I release them one by one to see which one cause suspend backoff. But suspend backoff still occurs. So I think it's the kernel itself.

Yeah, definitely not user apps. I did full reset on the phone to factory settings, no user apps. Even tried disabling Google Play and Google store after the reset. Still the same. The only thing that gets rid of it is disabling WiFi.

Yeah, it's clear that it's the wakelock. What's not clear is why. Also it's not the msm_hsic_host that the forum link you sent refers to. I don't have a problem with msm_hsic, that one barely takes any time during the day (maybe 30 seconds during several hours of standby). The wakelock causing this particular issue is "suspend_backoff" wakelock which supposedly happens when there is a sequence of sleep/wake calls too close together so the system decides to keep it awake. I was unable to find what exactly is causing the issue, even after restoring to the factory settings I kept seeing the same problem.
Anyway, I was able to "resolve" it by installing JuiceGuard app and setting it so it disables wifi when the screen is off. wakelock is gone now and my battery usage is back to normal.
I only get the suspend backoff wake lock when I'm connected to the university Wifi. When I'm at home, everything is fine, no suspend backoff. So my guess is that the Wifi encryption at university is different and causing a succession of close "awake" and cause wake lock.
I did factory reset like 3 times and it still there.
I'll try disable Wifi on Monday and see how it goes.
Same here, when wifi disabled the wakelock doesn't occur.
I have tried almost all of the kernels and non of them seem to help.

Interesting... Maybe it is encryption. One thing with my Wifi is that it doesn't use password, but MAC list instead. It may indeed be an issue with different wifi encryption types.
OP do you have maps 6.14 on your phone? Mine kept switching on location reporting for a while and it woke my phone 344 times last night. I've been struggling with the same wake lock issues. I'm going to recharge (again) with maps disabled and see if that helps.

The latest Maps was giving me horrible battery drain, on WiFi. I'd sleep for six hours with a fully charged phone and wake up with 10% left. it even enabled itself when. I disabled it in settings. I converted it to a user app by moving it to /data/app and greenified it. Seemed to have solved all of my issues with the suspend back off wake lock.

[Q] Phone doesn't go into deep sleep + wifi always stays on

This is very annoying, I have spent the whole morning trying to find a solution for this issue. The battery runs out already fast as it is, and now the phone is not
Battery drained about 20% at night by itself. Currently draining about 1-2% per 5 minutes when idle. What do I do? I have looked on various different threads for a solution, but did not find anything to fix this issue.
How do I fix this?
Thanks, in advance.
Also some details.
I had my phone at home, I prefer the phone to use WiFi networks when syncing and updating, but to have phone turn them automatically off when not using them, that is when the phone is locked and not syncing and updating anything. But apparently it doesn't do that, it has WiFi on at all times for some reason. And I don't know if its related to WiFi, it doesn't appear to go to "deep sleep"

But apparently it doesn't do that, it has WiFi on at all times for some reason. And I don't know if its related to WiFi, it doesn't appear to go to "deep sleep"

For me, it was the last Google Maps update. Try to disable "Reporting Location" and "Location History" under Location settings on Google Settings app(the one with the green icon). I had around 25% drain over night and half of it came from this.
Try it and see if this can help you.
:fingers-crossed:
Like above say, disable location, especially if you keep wifi on.
Leaving wifi on while sleeping itself is not good for our health anyway, so if you have data switch to 2G, its at least enough to keep internet messages coming while saving battery. And if its wifi wise, apply pm.sleep_mode=1 in your build.prop. AND, scroll up a little, wifi_supplicant_can_interval(something like that, from its SHOULD BE 15 change to 300-600).
Disable unused apps and use greenify.

Thank you for the answer, but sadly it didn't seem to do it. My WiFi is still always on, even though I have it set to turn off when phone is sleeping at WiFi advanced settings.
Although the phone entered deep sleep mode when I manually turned WiFi off, but I'm not sure if that was the case.

I understand, but I forgot to do so, I actually have an app that turns on air plane mode at certain time. But that still doesn't fix the issue that the phone doesn't enter sleep mode with WiFi on and doesn't turn it off, even though it's set to do so.
Also I did not quite understand what you were telling me there, as I got the phone last week and it's my first android phone. The app you suggested could cut it, but that means that whenever there will be an auto check for news sequence I will be downloading it with mobile data? Is there an app that could cause this?
I was about to update on this, but I just got notification about 4.3 update.
I will update this post, if this problem still exists.
UPDATE : Of course, still the problem persists, Phone goes to sleep when I have Wi-Fi turned off. But when on, even though I have it set to turn off during sleep mode, it keeps the phone wake and drains the battery.

How is it related to my router exactly? My iPod disconnects from Wi-Fi no problem.
Thank you for trying though.
I had left my phone this night with Wi-Fi off, but mobile data and 3G was on, Lost 7% in 7Hours from 47%. Does this seem okay, or a little bit too much? By the time I answered 2 emails and made 1 short phonecall and checked on battery logs from 2 different apps, and changed my wallpaper, battery has dropped to 33%. I'm not proud.
The answer to your problem is JuiceDefender Ultimate, available from Play Store.

Unfortunately this is normal, the battery life is not the best feature of nexus 4. How many screen on time hours do you get averagely?
This fixed the Wifi always on issue for me.
Turn WiFi on: Settings, WiFi, Menu (3 dots upper right hand corner), advanced, uncheck scanning always on.
Hope this helps.

Unexplainable battery drain

For a month or more I'm facing totally unexplainable battery drain.
As seen on the screens below, the phone is awake, but it is not detected anywhere - not by android nor by GSam. In any case the battery draws faster.
I have one observation tho - this happens after I make phone calls. Not every time, but once per 2,3 days.
Any ideas?

You have this problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/explanation-horrible-note-4-battery-t3004274
I'm pretty sure that I don't have this issue. Yes, the percentage in GSam maybe high, but I don't believe this reflects what is happening.
First of all - I don't have bad battery life. Usually my over night drain is less than 1%/1h.
Second - the issue appears sporadically.
Third - in the provided thread I don't see the issue appearing in stock battery monitor, while mine appear.
At last - my battery drains faster only while the issue is present and before I restart. After that it is back to normal ...
@Spo0f
Just some suggestions maybe you're using 3g I always have that turned off and switch it on when I use it my guess is that some apps are causing your drain after a call maybe like you said if you're not fimiliar with greenify I suggest you use it to stop all those apps and system apps also uninstall all those bloatware you don't need or at least freeze them if you don't mind lower the resolution to 1080p with nomone app use power save or disable dvfs and use an app to lower and raise the CPU to save juice when not needed....
Thanks for the suggestions, but as I said - this problem appear sporadically - home when using WiFi as well as outside when using 3G.
All of the rest is done - I'm no newby

Oh sorry mate well I don't use much 3g so I can't help you there but if you're having drainage when you're using WiFi in general then maybe you should reconsider investigating the post above with the link I don't have so much drainage on connectivity with 3g or WiFi....viewing the pics you uploaded it seems suspicious.... Maybe an app? I don't know...
Use wakelock detector

My overnight drain was also very low, but that was because the faulty device on the network was asleep at night too (my desktop).
If you're not rooted, use the PC version of Wakelock Detector at the end of your day and post screenshots of your highest drainers for the various categories. In my case, the device was being woken up by something on the network and it showed.
Bear in mind that actively downloading something in the time period will also raise wifi power used but more stats will help.
The fact that you're still experiencing a lot of drain even when outside suggests it might be a rogue app
One phone call today and after it the phone stayed awake.
Because I had issue with the PC WLD the screen shots are from 11 minutes after one of the disconnects. The device was awake all of them.

I also checked out my battery behaviour this night and was very disappointed. Although my phone was in flight mode and every peripherals and services shut down, today morning my phone was crying for energy. So I made a quick investigation in my power diagram and found out, that "Android OS" requested a wakelock during the whole power-on time. So I installed "CPU Spy" to check in which states the phone was really over the whole charging period. I couldn't believe my eyes. Although the kernel should do it's job good, cause most of the CPU times are in lower freqeuncy states, the deep sleep mode was never activated.
Therefore I installed an app called "Wakelock Detector" to check out which apps could cause that. I found out, that S Health had a big amount of wakelocks and also active-time, so the first thing was to disable S Health. After some minutes I checked back, but nevertheless still no deep sleep time in "CPU Spy".
So I searched around and found another one arguing about the wakelocks and that they could be the products of some programming issues concerning WiFi. The should be gone, after turning off WiFi and rebooting yout phone. And it seems that he was right. I waited some time and hooray, "CPU Spy" listed the phone state "Deep Sleep" the first time as an active state and also with the major active-time. So at least that was some step ahead. (I have to remark, that S Health was already unfrozen at this time, so S Health should not be responsible in any way.)
The next step was to reactivate WiFi, leave it on and set the phone on standby. After some time I checked back again the phone showed even more deep sleep time. So that was an improvement. I reactivated everything and waited some time... Deep Sleep all over the time. Can't figure out for now, if it was S Health, WiFi, or anything else that caused the wakelock for sure. At least the reboot helped. I'll check that out on a long-term test, maybe I get some further conclusions.
