Gets hot and uses battery while idle

Recently I have noticed on several occasions that my phone have gotten hot and started eating away the battery. One time I had around 30% battery and the phone was laying in my pocket. I felt the heat through the pockets and took it up to see what's up. It then had 0% battery and turned itself off.
When looking at battery use in settings, it's hard to pick out one specific application that might do this. If anything it would have to be "Android system", right now it's tied with the screen on 40%, but I charged the phone an hour ago and I haven't used the screen much.
Edit: I should add that the same thing just happened, from 99% to 89% then it stopped. That's why the information above about battery usage is relevant.
Do you think it might be hardware-related, like a partial short circuit or something, or is it most likely a software thing?

Well this is while it's laying in my pocket, with the screen off, so it's not the screen. (it's the battery that gets hot)

[Funny story that probably isn't relevant. I had a dodgy micro sd card that made my phone drain battery super fast and as a result my phone got incredibly hot. Took it out and it's back to normal.]

Sounds software related to me, your android system should definitely not be 40% of your battery. It sounds like some rogue app/process is utilizing your cpu and thus your battery very heavily. If you select the "Android system" in the battery usage list, does it not give you a further breakdown of what is included in that that is using your battery? Also, what does it say for the cpu time for the android system?

May be firmware bug
I've had this happen to me a few times when I was running the original firmware. In some early firmware there was a bug related to switching between wifi and 3G, which would get it stuck so that you couldn't toggle wifi on or off. The times this happened to me, it was also stuck in the wifi bug (although I had the wifi bug and it didn't drain the battery).
I now run the newer firmware (JG4) and both problems have stopped.

I've had this problem with my asian i9000 since the beginning. The app called Top showed me that it is ksoftirq/d that is running and System Panel showed me that the cpu was running at 100% at 1ghz.
At first the only solution seemed to be restarting the phone. However some information shared on this forum led me to try restarting wifi which also works. For that thread search for "ksoftirq/d."

I have had the "stuck wifi" bug, but I'm not sure if it was happening the last time this happened. I'll check it out the next time.
There's no official firmware update on Kies for Norway yet, so I think I'll wait for one.

Had exactly the same problem and tracked the culprit - it was Fancy widget in my case. Removed it, installed Beautiful widget and all is well since

That might actually be it. If I'm not mistaken Fancy Widget had 30% battery consumption when I checked. I deleted it just to see if it would make a difference. So far so good.

Some details:
Fancy Widget will hit the 100% cpu on auto-refresh if there's no data connection available (either wifi or cellular). It seems there are 2 bugs with Fancy Widget; it ignores "auto-refresh off" option and it tries to connect to server even when offline.
A dirty work around would be to set refresh time to let's say 12 hours and make sure to manually refresh at least once every

That makes me even more convinced that Fancy Widget is the culprit. I usually have cellular network disabled (APNDroid On/Off Widget) to save battery and my wifi connection keeps loosing connection, probably due to some software bug in XXJF3 stock firmware.

Insane Battery Drain...Please help

This is my first android phone and I'm wondering if I am doing anything wrong. Yesterday I charged my phone and it was at 83%. I unplugged the phone and went to sleep, when I woke up this morning the battery was completely drained.
This happens a lot. Even if I am not doing anything it still drains like crazy. I just text, make some phone calls and it barely makes it through the day. I don't play any games, no gps, no Bluetooth or anything. With my plan, I don't have a data connection so I can't connect to 3g/4g so that shouldn't drain anything.
What could I be doing wrong? When I'm done using the phone I tap the power button on top, the screen goes black - to sleep I presume and I put it away. I had an iphone before this and I did exactly the same thing and the battery lasted for 3-4 days on one charge.
Whenever I see what's using up the battery, the display tops the list. The display is using up 75-80% of the battery. If the phone is asleep for most of the time why is the display using up that much battery? Am I not putting the phone to sleep correctly?

If you cant connect to 3g/4g, you should turn it off in settings. Otherwise, Your phone will constantly look for a signal, draining your battery.

Battery life is all relative. Every single person will experience different battery life. The apps you have installed, the amount of time you spend on it and the time you spend on/in each app, distance from cell towers, distance from Wi-Fi sources, settings you have for every app and things like sync and what not.

The first thing to check is if your phone is being affected by the init or suspend bugs. The good news is the former has an easy fix, and the latter can be temporarily fixed by a reboot.
First, download & install Watchdog Lite from the market. Then open its preferences and check "include phone processes," "monitor phone processes," and "display all phone processes." Then just use your phone as normal. It may take a while before you get an alert from Watchdog (and maybe you never will and it ends up you have a different problem). But if you do, note the process that is the culprit.
If it is the init process, go to settings>applications>development> check "usb debugging."
If it is the suspend process, reboot the phone. It should keep it from happening again for a while.

Good luck...I had both of the problems and my phone didn't last to dinner time. Now I get better battery life than the iphone 3GS I had before this...about a day and a half of moderate use.
EDIT: also you'll probably want to go to settings>wireless & networks>uncheck "mobile network" since you don't have a data plan. No reason to have that on since you don't have a data plan.

I installed this using the Moderate setting, and then selected those options as recommended in preferences.
Does Watchdog use a lot of system resources when running in this manner? Will it cause the battery to drain noticeably faster?

Completely unnoticeable, IMO.

I installed watchdog lite and I have had couple of alerts. I got suspended couple of times and I also got Android system once.
Android system - 50.1%
Foreground
Suspend - 54.4%
Linux Process
I turned off the data usage from the settings and it did help save battery. The display is not using so much battery life anymore. It went from using 70% to 35%.
Edit: Battsatt reported that the battery was at 93%. When I saw the two alerts above I rebooted the phone and Battsatt now starts reporting the phone is fully charged.

Make sure the GPS is turned Off, too...

All these answers and the easy ones were not mentioned..
Make sure you shut your AUTO SYNC off...
Make sure you lower your brightneess....
Make sure you turn off GPS(was stated above me)
Turn off your wifi if you are not using it.. make sure you are not transmitting your hot spot stuff...

You just summed it up right there. You are experiencing the 'suspend' issue, period. There is no app you can install to fix it. There is no app you can uninstall to fix it. There is no setting you can adjust to fix it. There is no fix for the 'suspend' issue, literally.

If there was an app or setting that fixed the 'suspend' issue, we wouldn't even be discussing this right now. There are fixes/workarounds for a lot of things, but right now, the 'suspend' process issue truly is a mystery. No one, not a single person has yet to post, "this is the cause of the issue," let alone a fix for it.
I wish you had a fix man, I really do. My fiancee experiences this and there's only one way she's found to sort of workaround it, sort of - she reboots her phone every morning. This seems to keep it at bay, at least more so than when she doesn't reboot each morning, once she takes it off the charger. She still gets it though and she's just used to looking for Watchdog and checking her processes now.
This thread could go on and on forever but it comes down to this:
- The MT4G does not have insane battery drain and will give you about 12 hours of life, under normal>medium usage. If your battery is draining insanely quickly AND if you're seeing the suspend process jacked up so high, then there.is.no.fix.yet.
There might be a ton of other replies after this about uninstall this, install that, change this, don't use widgets, use widgets, etc. Those attempts will be futile.

Battery problems?

My new note's battery seem weird after I let it run to 1% and then charge up to 100%.
After that, it seems to lose battery very much faster.
Left overnight, it went from 79% to 49%!! a 30% drop!!
I checked Battery status report battery health is good and average 33-35 degrees temperature.
Bulk of battery usage is reported for Display (62%, "time on" of 1hr 30m) ...
Is this normal??
What can I do?

Maybe the battery needs some recalibration, run it down to 1% then charge the phone while its still off.

Try a factory reset and then calibrate the battery.

Just woke up after the first night with the Note. I had 45% battery left when i went to bed, and now 9 hours later it's at 43%.

You diagnosed the problem correctly by identifying the device being awake while the screen is off. I suggest two tools to narrow it down:
1. Cpu Spy, Market, free, displays how much time the CPU spent in the different power states. During the night it should almost completely be in deep sleep.
2. BetterBatteryStats, Market, ~2.50$, allows to identify apps with wakelocks, apps which prevent the system to enter the deep sleep power state while the screen is off and the device basically is idleing. On CM Spareparts xan do that for free, for Samsung devices I first have to find a free alternative app that works...
No wipe needed (yet), no delete this or do that. First find the villain, then shoot em, not the other way round.

but there is lots of information, and I have little clue what these constitute or how to identify what apps cause the issues??

You could post screenshots of all the screens of betterbatterystats and we will try to help you.
Charge the phone to 100% and disconnect it right before you go to sleep, enter cpuspy and reset its counters. Then enter task manager and kill all the programs and clean the memory. Now go to sleep and when you wake up post screenshots of the built in battery stats, betterbatterystats and cpuspy.

BetterBatteryStats shows it is WiFi that has a humongous amount of wakelocks, but the thing here is I have WiFi disabled.

CPU Spy shows nothing that looks that weird to me, although I rather wonder why so little deep sleep and so much 200MHz, but that might be if deep sleep has a longer "counter" than it did on SGS/SGS2. If I use the phone to check time, or twitter from a widget couple of times per hour, does SGN enter deep sleep during those "breaks"?

I really wanna get behind this. I love this phone, but this battery drainage begins to be a problem for me. I got about 2-5% drain per night with SGS2 and 10-15% per day on similar usage.

yeah, there's something seriously wrong with your phone. Are you rooted ? would you consider a full wipe and maybe a different ROM ?

Not rooted, not modified in any serious way either. (Using GO Launcher EX, not TouchWiz launcher, that's really the extend of modification on this phone.)
Android version is 2.3.6, Baseband N7000XXKK5, kernel 2.6.35.7-N7000XBKK4
This is what was shipped with the phone. It's unbranded and unlocked.
I haven't really done anything to it but installed apps from Android Market (and a couple with Samsung Apps).
EDIT: This is my day-to-day phone with all settings as I like them and all things set, so I would like if I wouldn't have to do a full wipe. But if nothing else helps, I guess I'll have to, in the end.

I hope someone will be able to help you cause I've never seen anything like that.

I had the same problem. The first night my Note was dropping from 100% down to about 50% when I was asleep and the screen was off.
In the battery stats I could see that it was the Android core that used all this power.
So I tried a couple things to see if it helped:
1) I went to WiFi-settings and set it to turn off WiFi when screen off. This is a setting that is not on by default, you have to set it yourself.
2) I turned off AutoSync (Google account and so on)
Those to settings removed the overnight powerdrain problem. The next night it only went from 100% to about 98% when I slept
And since I am a serious betterysaver I also turned off autolight on screen, and set it to lowest light possible (still nice picture). I turned on the "Autoadjust screenpower), turned off all animations, turned off all kind of vibrations on the phone.
I left the"System powersetting" alone. It didnt save much power and it made the phone slower.
All in all, now my battery is great, I still have lot of juice left after a full day of using my Galaxy Note

I seem to have fixed my problem, without having to do a full wipe. I don't know which part it was that finally did it, but I'm glad it now behaves like I think it should. (about 2% battery drain in ~5h in pocket, one 1min phonecall and two or three times checking time from lockscreen.)
Anyway, I apparently ALSO had the infamous problem with Mediaserver eating humongous amounts of battery, so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with the WiFi keeping it awake or was just a separate problem.
Long story short, here's what I did:
a) installed JuiceDefender, had it manage Wifi
b) turned Wifi on, restart
c) turned Wifi off, restart
[d) installed nomedia manager and excluded most directories from mediascanner]
e) turned phone off, recharged to 100%.
Seems to be working now. No WiFi wakelocks, no mediaserver eating CPU, deep sleep ~70% of the time.

GSam Battery Monitor Screen Usage?

Every night, my battery is drained by 7-8% even though, GPS, WiFi, all radios are off and the phone is in airplane mode (done automatically via LLama scripts). I installed GSam Battery Monitor to try to figure out what was going on and it indicated that even though the screen was dark, it was draining the battery (and was the primary culprit). Is this accurate or is it a bug? Anyone else seeing something like this on their Nexus 4?

Mine shows 78% usage in dark.. I think that just means how much of battery total it was used while the phone screen was off. I'm taking a completely random guess here though.

So you reset the app right before going to bed and checked it first thing in the morning and in the 7 hours you slept, the main battery drain came from the screen?
I use the same app and I never noticed anything wrong. Still, battery readings are not always accurate... sometimes when I recharge my phone, it stays 100%for a few hours, then it drops 7-10% in a matter of an hour...and that's completely normal I say you shouldn't worry about it too much as long as you get satisfying usage times..

I'm not happy w/battery life and trying to track down what the culprit is. If all major services are off at night, 7-8% battery drain doesn't seem normal to me. Granted this is apples and oranges, but my iPad Gen 3 in the same configuration remains at 100% overnight.
If doing nothing drains nearly 10% over 6-7 hours, no surprise I've got issues during the day.

I've noticed the same thing, one time I didnt turn the screen on on my phone, then I went to screen and it showed 0% discharge while screen on, and 7% discharge while off. I'm running the latest version of Viper, I'm also confused and I wonder if theres some issue where maybe power is being sent to the screen even though it's not on.

After my 7 hours sleep.. Every morning my phone uses 2% battery drainage at MAX. i.e.: Wifi Edge Sync etc ALL OFF. And I am getting 4+ screen time on my phone with moderate usage. Pretty happy with the battery life so far.

Your phone probably isn't going into sleep. The Nexus 4 seems to be prone to insomnia caused by apps that don't cause a problem on other devices.
To check this download CPU Spy from the play store. Run it, reset timers to zero, and with the phone on battery (i.e. not on charge) let it rest for 30 minutes or so, then check the figures.
You should see Deep Sleep as > 90%, if not, or it is listed as an unused state, your phone isn't sleeping.
To fix this you either work forward or backwards!
Work forward:
Factory reset, install CPU Spy, run the test and see your phone is now deep sleeping.
Start installing applications one by one and after each install, run the app, then run the CPU Spy test again.
Eventually you will find the app causing the problem, all you can do is avoid that app. Note you may have more than one app causing a problem so keep checking after each install.
Work backwards:
Start by un-installing an app at a time restarting your phone in between then running a CPU Spy test. Start with any live wallpapers (even if not set to be used) you have installed, then any weather widgets. Note just un-installing is not enough, you must restart after each one.
Eventually your phone will start deep sleeping again so finding the problem app.

I tried your advice, and my phone is going into deep sleep around 90% of the time, so I don't think that it's a rogue app. I keep my phone on the dimmest setting at all times, and I only get 2.5 hours of screen on time. I have an anker battery.

Phone Idle under Settings/Battery

What runs under "Phone Idle" on the V20. It's been the largest battery consumer for the last week of use that I've noticed. My wife's V20 is the same and I had my brother check his and his wife's V20.
I'm only asking because I'm not see great battery life like other have been reporting. I don't have live wallpaper, have only two widgets on the home screen. GPS is set to battery save, screen is set to auto but that doesn't even come close to chewing up the battery.
Sadly I feel like I'm still using my old 2.5 year G3 where it'll need a charge mid way through the day.

I agree with you. Although my phone is just beyond a week old and does have all my apps installed, a factory reset can't be the solution here. This is the typical "I don't know how to fix this" answer always given by manufacturers and carriers.

In the roughly 3 weeks I've had my V20 I've only seen this once where phone idle was higher than Screen. I started looking thru all running apps for 'keep awake' time being high and noticed Android OS had keep awake of over 2 hours when it's normally less than an hour after a full day use. I power cycled the phone and it stopped.
The weird thing was Android OS didn't show high battery usage even though something was triggering keep awake. Looks like the keep awake was causing phone idle to be high.
I'd look at everything in your battery usage to see if you have any high keep awake times.

Sorry did not mean to be short in my response. When you set up your phone did you restore it from another phone using the nfc bump thing? I did the same and my phone battery was the same way. Wouldn't last even half a day. After i factory reset and set everything up manually i get 18+ hrs with 7 hrs screen on time sometimes.
If this situation doesn't apply to you then maybe a reset won't help. But you have to understand your situation isn't normal.

Make sure Google now features are all turned off and not running in the background.

I started looking thru all running apps for 'keep awake' time being high and noticed Android OS had keep awake of over 2 hours when it's normally less than an hour after a full day use. I power cycled the phone and it stopped.
The weird thing was Android OS didn't show high battery usage even though something was triggering keep awake. Looks like the keep awake was causing phone idle to be high.
I'd look at everything in your battery usage to see if you have any high keep awake times.

I'll have to go through the apps one by one like I did previously on my G3 and see. Now within the battery stats there is only a handful of apps like hangout, play music, chrome and camera. The rest is OS related so that's why I was curious what ran under Phone Idle.

Wouldn't last even half a day. After i factory reset and set everything up manually i get 18+ hrs with 7 hrs screen on time sometimes.
If this situation doesn't apply to you then maybe a reset won't help. But you have to understand your situation isn't normal.

No and sadly I was looking for that feature a week ago but couldn't find it so I had to individually install most of my apps I had on my previous phone...made for a long night along with the additional emails and configuration or icons and such.
I'll keep digging away at the phone...I really want to like this phone ?

Has there been a definitive resolution to "phone idle" battery drain? I just got a V20 2 weeks ago on sale for $360 and its a fantastic upgrade over the One+1 I've been rockin all these years, but I'm also suffering from mediocre life due to whatever phone idle is. Some forums (for other phones) say phone idle is related to your wireless signal. I'm still with the same carrier and frequenting the same locations and had no such battery drain with that old One+.

it turns google plays have this "locationmanager service " and locationwhatever" that kills your battery over wifi even with location button off

Go to locations/ 3 dots in top right corner/ turn off WiFi scan. See if that helps.

My phone has been suffering from poor battery life for quite some time now, here are the screenshots, Android OS has been this high on almost all battery cycles.

Phone idle is always the biggest battery draw on my phone too. I have minimal apps too. No Facebook or similar types of apps. I'm on a Verizon V20 stock with the latest security update. Is this normal V20 behavior to have phone idle consume more battery than everything else?

how about doze mode , isnt that meant to help with this sort of problem ? ( my phone is currently on a ship )

Would also be grateful if anyone shared a solution.
I specifically have a SIM-unlocked Sprint model (LS997) which am using in Europe with another carrier.
Using it in LTE preferred mode drains about 10-15% overnight.
Using it in WCDMA preferred mode drains up to 5% per night (yes, wifi and cellular data OFF and many apps greenified) . So I'm really interested in how this can be fixed and achieve 0% battery drain across several hours.
Or maybe it's SIM-unlocked Sprint ROM related?? I can't root my phone since it has the Feb 2017 patch and is a ZV6.
I suspect rooting it and using another ROM would solve this + the annoying issue of not being able to send images via FB Messenger and Viber while on cellular data (I imagine the Sprint guys placed some kind of restriction to deny media transfer for these apps when using cellular data).

I have noticed this too.. wondered why "phone idle" takes most battery... any suggestions would be great!

I am also curious about the solution. Phone Idle is at top. Even without SIM card. 30% drains during a night (everything is disabled, but no airplane mode is on). I tried factory reset, reinstall older ROM, replace battery, use no app but still sucks.

my v20 phone battery draining was about 1% per hour before (about 7% totally ) and recently increased to 2% during sleeping time overnight. (draining 15% overnight in sleeping state)
it seems that during day either performance off battery is decreased.(about 5h with wifi and screen on usage)
Fast charging while second screen is On , is slower than when it is off therefore when second screen is Off , fast charging goes better . exactly , first 30 mins fast charging makes about 40% battery charge(instead of 50%) and after 60 min leads to 85% and full charging taking place after about 100 min instead of 80 mins.
another important thing is that sometimes shades have been seen on the LCD that many users have complained about it.

my actions are as follows :
phone is factory reseted. No third party apps is installed. [especially social media apps.]
battery calibration steps for not rooted phones is taken place.(turning off the phone and charging several times repeatedly).
testing battery drain in safe mode in done and didn't change results
turn off location services and location scanning for WiFi and Bluetooth scanning
turn off WiFi being On during screen is Off.
turn off auto sync, NFC, GPS etc.
not using auto brightness.
not using comfort view .

second screen is off during test overnight. (either with second screen is ON with faced down to lower brightness in other day test )
phone is in Air Plane Mode and all data services is off.
system apps like Google services and Play and Assistance is limited by permissions.
