So, yesterday I noticed a sudden battery drain on my nexus 4. After checking battery it showed that AndroidOS takes over about 50% of the battery usage. It also showed that time awake was pretty much the same as the amount of time since I unplugged the phone, even though I kept my phone in sleep mode for the most of the day. After some research I downloaded better battery stats and it showed that from the moment I turn the screen off a process called suspend_backoff runs pretty much the entire time. Eventually I got it down to wifi. If I turn off wifi there are no processes running after the screen is turned off (or if there are they are 30 seconds tops), but the moment I turn wifi on suspend_backoff runs pretty much the entire time screen is off. I tried removing all of my apps, as well as doing factory reset but nothing helps. The moment I turn wifi ON this suspend_backoff consumes pretty much all the time during screen off period. Is anyone experiencing anything like this ? I have 4.2.2 on the phone and I havent' seen this extreme drain until just yesterday.

how did you narrow it down? Im having the same problem!
This is caused by a kernel wakelock. A bad mobile connection make battery drain worse... using WLAN nearly fixes this problem.
Thought this problem has got fixed in 4.2.2, at least battery life got improved and the wakelock reduced.
If it is appearing since yesterday, it is triggered by a app often waking the phone up using mobile data (that's why fixed with WLAN) and prevent the phone from getting into deep sleep as fast as it should.

as i said before, an app needs data, so it starts callung the kernel wakelock... this one causes tje drain, not the app itself

Yeah, definitely not user apps. I did full reset on the phone to factory settings, no user apps. Even tried disabling Google Play and Google store after the reset. Still the same. The only thing that gets rid of it is disabling WiFi.

When did you start noticing this ? Has it been for a while or just recently ? I first noticed it yesterday (had the phone for a bit over a month now, didn't see any issues until just yesterday)

Yeah, it's clear that it's the wakelock. What's not clear is why. Also it's not the msm_hsic_host that the forum link you sent refers to. I don't have a problem with msm_hsic, that one barely takes any time during the day (maybe 30 seconds during several hours of standby). The wakelock causing this particular issue is "suspend_backoff" wakelock which supposedly happens when there is a sequence of sleep/wake calls too close together so the system decides to keep it awake. I was unable to find what exactly is causing the issue, even after restoring to the factory settings I kept seeing the same problem.
Anyway, I was able to "resolve" it by installing JuiceGuard app and setting it so it disables wifi when the screen is off. wakelock is gone now and my battery usage is back to normal.
I only get the suspend backoff wake lock when I'm connected to the university Wifi. When I'm at home, everything is fine, no suspend backoff. So my guess is that the Wifi encryption at university is different and causing a succession of close "awake" and cause wake lock.
I did factory reset like 3 times and it still there.
I'll try disable Wifi on Monday and see how it goes.
Same here, when wifi disabled the wakelock doesn't occur.
I have tried almost all of the kernels and non of them seem to help.

Interesting... Maybe it is encryption. One thing with my Wifi is that it doesn't use password, but MAC list instead. It may indeed be an issue with different wifi encryption types.
OP do you have maps 6.14 on your phone? Mine kept switching on location reporting for a while and it woke my phone 344 times last night. I've been struggling with the same wake lock issues. I'm going to recharge (again) with maps disabled and see if that helps.

The clowns may have left you a lovely gift there without telling you or asking any kind of permission.
The latest Maps was giving me horrible battery drain, on WiFi. I'd sleep for six hours with a fully charged phone and wake up with 10% left. it even enabled itself when. I disabled it in settings. I converted it to a user app by moving it to /data/app and greenified it. Seemed to have solved all of my issues with the suspend back off wake lock.

For some weird reason, I was also having serious battery drain suddenly since yesterday.

My N7 has been working great for a week with the battery life easily lasting over a day for my normal use.
However since yesterday, an app called "glgps" has been using 66% of the battery and I noticed that the GPS icon is always on in the notification bar.
I'm not sure what might have triggered this, any ideas? I tried putting it into airplane mode to stop the GPS, but it made no difference. I now have to reboot it to stop it till something starts it again.
Anyone else experienced this?

I'm having the same issue...turning off GPS doesn't help. I have to power-cycle.
I've also experienced this for the past 2 nights. I wake up to a dead N7.
glgps issue
I have been having the same issue with mine for the last few days. I turned off the GPS, turned on airplane mode and force closed any GPS related apps. None of this did anything. Finally on the battery usage screen, I held down on the glgps line and selected the app info popup. This took me to a process called System UI. Finally, after force closing this, the GPS finally shut off.

This glgps process is also draining battery in my Nexus 7 3G version. It started today, having only about 9 to 10 hrs of battery while normally I do get 1.5 to 2 days on normal use, Curiously enough, today, I didn't use the N7 so the battery should be almost full nevertheless it is at 20% now and going down quick.
glgps is the culprit . I can tell from the settings -> battery menu. But, my thing is that I can NOT touch and hold the glgps line and get an app info popup, that would never happen on my device.
My N7 is a stock Jellybean 4.2.2, rooted but not modified in any way. The Facebook app and FB messenger apps upgraded yesterday...I am thinking they do have something to do with this, at least on my device...but have no way to prove that..yet.

Anyone else having this problem? All the sudden Android OS is taking a ton of battery, killed half my battery overnight while the screen was off. Anyone have any of these problems?
Android OS is too general to say what is causing the wakelock. Use an app that can see which process is causing the wakelock directly and you will know what the problem is.

My android os consumes 70% of my battery. Tried better battery stats, but I don't see any wake locks

Then you definitley have an app or two that is causing it. Try CPU Spy (let's you know if you get deep sleep or not) and see if that helps any. I hate battery drain so best of luck in solving your battery drain issue.
Since I've upgraded to 4.2 roms on all my devices I've noticed this too. Normally, Maps is the culprit causing a "normal" wakelock. Google +, Latitude, Google Now, etc. This is just the way Google operates now & the biggest difference between 4.1 & 4.2. I've taken to disabling Location unless I'm needing GPS service. It checks your location every couple minutes it seems.
I've had a situation you describe a few times caused by media storage. It keeps scanning the SD card. Sometimes a reboot helps but mostly I've just changed roms instead of chasing it. Better Batt Stats should show it somewhere. Keep looking, look in "alarms". Also you might try GSam Battery Monitor. That app has come a long way lately & also helps finding battery sucking sources.

I had my phone at home, I prefer the phone to use WiFi networks when syncing and updating, but to have phone turn them automatically off when not using them, that is when the phone is locked and not syncing and updating anything. But apparently it doesn't do that, it has WiFi on at all times for some reason. And I don't know if its related to WiFi, it doesn't appear to go to "deep sleep"

For me, it was the last Google Maps update. Try to disable "Reporting Location" and "Location History" under Location settings on Google Settings app(the one with the green icon). I had around 25% drain over night and half of it came from this.
Try it and see if this can help you.

Leaving wifi on while sleeping itself is not good for our health anyway, so if you have data switch to 2G, its at least enough to keep internet messages coming while saving battery. And if its wifi wise, apply pm.sleep_mode=1 in your build.prop. AND, scroll up a little, wifi_supplicant_can_interval(something like that, from its SHOULD BE 15 change to 300-600).
Disable unused apps and use greenify.

Thank you for the answer, but sadly it didn't seem to do it. My WiFi is still always on, even though I have it set to turn off when phone is sleeping at WiFi advanced settings.
Although the phone entered deep sleep mode when I manually turned WiFi off, but I'm not sure if that was the case.

I understand, but I forgot to do so, I actually have an app that turns on air plane mode at certain time. But that still doesn't fix the issue that the phone doesn't enter sleep mode with WiFi on and doesn't turn it off, even though it's set to do so.
Also I did not quite understand what you were telling me there, as I got the phone last week and it's my first android phone. The app you suggested could cut it, but that means that whenever there will be an auto check for news sequence I will be downloading it with mobile data? Is there an app that could cause this?
I was about to update on this, but I just got notification about 4.3 update. :laugh:
I will update this post, if this problem still exists.
UPDATE : Of course, still the problem persists, Phone goes to sleep when I have Wi-Fi turned off. But when on, even though I have it set to turn off during sleep mode, it keeps the phone wake and drains the battery.

By the time I answered 2 emails and made 1 short phonecall and checked on battery logs from 2 different apps, and changed my wallpaper, battery has dropped to 33%. I'm not proud.

Unfortunately this is normal, the battery life is not the best feature of nexus 4. How many screen on time hours do you get averagely?
This fixed the Wifi always on issue for me.
Turn WiFi on: Settings, WiFi, Menu (3 dots upper right hand corner), advanced, uncheck scanning always on.

As seen on the screens below, the phone is awake, but it is not detected anywhere - not by android nor by GSam. In any case the battery draws faster.
I have one observation tho - this happens after I make phone calls. Not every time, but once per 2,3 days.
Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure that I don't have this issue. Yes, the percentage in GSam maybe high, but I don't believe this reflects what is happening.
First of all - I don't have bad battery life. Usually my over night drain is less than 1%/1h.
Second - the issue appears sporadically.
Third - in the provided thread I don't see the issue appearing in stock battery monitor, while mine appear.
At last - my battery drains faster only while the issue is present and before I restart. After that it is back to normal ...

Just some suggestions maybe you're using 3g I always have that turned off and switch it on when I use it my guess is that some apps are causing your drain after a call maybe like you said if you're not fimiliar with greenify I suggest you use it to stop all those apps and system apps also uninstall all those bloatware you don't need or at least freeze them if you don't mind lower the resolution to 1080p with nomone app use power save or disable dvfs and use an app to lower and raise the CPU to save juice when not needed....

Oh sorry mate well I don't use much 3g so I can't help you there but if you're having drainage when you're using WiFi in general then maybe you should reconsider investigating the post above with the link I don't have so much drainage on connectivity with 3g or WiFi....viewing the pics you uploaded it seems suspicious.... Maybe an app? I don't know...

My overnight drain was also very low, but that was because the faulty device on the network was asleep at night too (my desktop).
If you're not rooted, use the PC version of Wakelock Detector at the end of your day and post screenshots of your highest drainers for the various categories. In my case, the device was being woken up by something on the network and it showed.
Bear in mind that actively downloading something in the time period will also raise wifi power used but more stats will help.
The fact that you're still experiencing a lot of drain even when outside suggests it might be a rogue app
One phone call today and after it the phone stayed awake.
Because I had issue with the PC WLD the screen shots are from 11 minutes after one of the disconnects. The device was awake all of them.

I also checked out my battery behaviour this night and was very disappointed. Although my phone was in flight mode and every peripherals and services shut down, today morning my phone was crying for energy. So I made a quick investigation in my power diagram and found out, that "Android OS" requested a wakelock during the whole power-on time. So I installed "CPU Spy" to check in which states the phone was really over the whole charging period. I couldn't believe my eyes. Although the kernel should do it's job good, cause most of the CPU times are in lower freqeuncy states, the deep sleep mode was never activated.
Therefore I installed an app called "Wakelock Detector" to check out which apps could cause that. I found out, that S Health had a big amount of wakelocks and also active-time, so the first thing was to disable S Health. After some minutes I checked back, but nevertheless still no deep sleep time in "CPU Spy".
So I searched around and found another one arguing about the wakelocks and that they could be the products of some programming issues concerning WiFi. The should be gone, after turning off WiFi and rebooting yout phone. And it seems that he was right. I waited some time and hooray, "CPU Spy" listed the phone state "Deep Sleep" the first time as an active state and also with the major active-time. So at least that was some step ahead. (I have to remark, that S Health was already unfrozen at this time, so S Health should not be responsible in any way.)
The next step was to reactivate WiFi, leave it on and set the phone on standby. After some time I checked back again the phone showed even more deep sleep time. So that was an improvement. I reactivated everything and waited some time... Deep Sleep all over the time. Can't figure out for now, if it was S Health, WiFi, or anything else that caused the wakelock for sure. At least the reboot helped. I'll check that out on a long-term test, maybe I get some further conclusions.

The battery is draining fast and I can see in the battery stats that it's not sleeping, otherwise the battery usage page shows nothing of interest, apart from perhaps Mobile Standby which is quite high, above the screen but the signal bar is all green...
I rooted my phone to better find out what was causing these issues, otherwise stock Marshmallow. Unfortunately Motorola now are not interested as they say my phone is rooted and now has no warranty - useless idiots!
Using GS Sam battery monitor (rooted) I can see that the following is keeping the phone awake, no other app is.
48.3% of battery consumed by Kernel (Android OS)
Keep awake over 2 hours
CPU usage 59m 53s
Number of Wake Locks: 1
Byes sent: 246.21KB
Bytes Received: 5.70MB

don't tell them your device is rooted. if you go to service center just re-lock the bootloader and its back to normal.[it won't get your warranty back but they don't check that much]
can you post a screenshot of gs sam.
1 - Install BetterBatteryStats (BBS) - this will give you detailed information on what is draining your battery. Get it from XDA v2.2.0.0B6 - this gives you the detailed breakdown in the UI that you are after, the google play version doesn't do it in the UI (older version).
Get baseline results (charge it full, don't touch it for 5-6 hours) I like to do this while sleeping.
2 - Install Greenify (you don't need the Xposed module if you don't want to fiddle with that yet, alto I highly recommend it) set the working mode to root. If applications are still not sleeping, add the widget and force sleep everything before you turn off your screen
Get BBS results (do the 5-6 hours while sleeping) - improved?
3 - Install Naptime from the google play store (by Fransico Franco)

4- Read up on Amplify - this yielded even more results for me. But this can take a bit of work to get right. There's a lot of great threads on XDA for setting this up.
5 -Smart network - allows you to control data, networks, wifi, bluetooh, nfc, gps on/off with a ton of great features for auto. management.
I have all the above and yield a 0.4%/hr drain on stand by (see signature for phone build).
Amplify is a god sent app. It has been 4 hours now, and I have been using whatsapp on and off (about 20 seconds each time) and I still have 97% left in the tank.

Facebook app has been known to cause serious battery drain in the past. Uninstall it and test again.
In 99% of the cases it is caused by an app. Try to find out which one is causing the drain.

Sorry for the delay and thanks for the replies. I performed a factory reset again, after clearing the cache etc, the same as I did last time. The only difference is I then installed Android 6.0.1
The battery drain has now gone. I didn't perform a restore of apps etc, and the only apps I have installed so far in addition have been Facebook and Facebook messenger but I have found these have had no effect at all on the battery drain. I haven't even updated the stock apps (apart from the security ones).
I now get two days of use easy. It also seems to be running slightly faster. I will update apps one by one, over the course of a few days to make sure nothing causes it again...

I use this guide, works really great to limit wake locks.
And I don't use Fb app but use the browser instead, battery lasts easily two days of "heavy" usage !
I found the problem, or at least a major bug. Whenever you cast to Google Chromecast Audio and then stop casting completely there is a massive wakelock until you next restart the phone. My phone was awake all night and down to 20% battery life. Android OS takes a massive portion of the battery life and under keep awake stats it's 9 hours +. It seems that when it says disconnected it is not. A major bug! I'll try and report it using Google's bug reporter...

not even Doze could kill it? perhaps you could try Servicely and see if it could stop the thing from running.

Nope, Doze had no affect at all but it should be as it was sitting stationary overnight - normally the drain overnight is a few percent at the most, last night it was around 65% and I was left with 20% in the morning and this was I think the first time I had used Google Chromecast Audio since the factory reset with great battery life up to last night... I could try Servicely but I am not sure on the service to kill and I'd like to keep it 100% stock for now so I can help out Google to fix the bug (or Motorola if they bother)... What a pain as I just bought 4x Google Chromecast Audios!!

However I am not sure if this is a Motorola Issue or a Google Marshmallow / Chromecast issue?? Motorola support have been very unhelpful so no luck if that is the case...
If anyone else with Chromecast Audio could confirm the bug that would be great.

There's a post on reddit about battery drain with chromecast audio about a year ago, not sure if it's the same issue though.

apart from greenify and naptime...i dont think we have something like amplify yet for nougat devices, also with the governor scripts they are providing better results now
