For those of you that have migrated to Hangouts for SMS or some other 3rd party app and like to disable/freeze apps that come preinstalled on the phone. If you freeze/disable the default android messaging app you will loose the ability to have quick sms responses while receiving a phone call.
Figured I let you know.

I think you may have changed the default application for quick sms to the default messaging. And it;s still looking for that. Try this.
1. Unfreeze messaging app
2. Go to app info for messaging
3. Clear defaults
4. Try this with the phone app as well just in case.
5. Check to see it worked.

I've seen instructions on xda for replacing touchwiz apps with the GS3, and it's been claimed that it's possible to delete the Samsung messaging app in favor of another sms app.
So I've frozen the Samsung messaging app on my SG4, and I've installed the jellybean build of Google's messaging app. But it doesn't quite work? I can successfully send sms messages (I'm on rogers) and I can receive sms messages if the sms message app is open. But when the app is closed and out of memory I don't get sms.
It gets stranger, though. When I thaw out the Samsung messaging app, I seem to get my sms' again, but in the Google messaging app. Which is sort of what I wanted, but I'm left wondering why the Google app can't work on its own.
Has anyone else tried this and gotten it to work?
Sent from my SGH-I337M using xda app-developers app
Have you tried leaving the Samsung SMS app unfrozen, and simply turn off its notifications? Sometimes that's what you need to do in order for 3rd party SMS apps to work, because the background service is tailored for the OEM's app. So you have to let that retrieve the messages and save them to the SMS/MMS storage area, which other SMS apps can then retrieve the data from.
Although it is strange that the AOSP app isn't working. But it's worth a try.
I use Google Voice and some other texting app... I want my phone to ask me everytime I want to send a text which app I want to use, so I "clear default" on the stock messaging app. but it keeps selecting back on it's own!! It's annoying. Does anyone know how to stop this? if I clear defaults now, few minutes later the stock app is "default" again!

I would suggest freezing that messaging app that you are not using. Titanium backup does this.

That doesn't help. I "turned off" stock app but my other messaging app (goSMS) then sets itself as default! when I clear defaults for goSMS few minutes later it will select itselft as default, just like stock app does. Now, if I uninstall goSMS then "hangouts" will be default and will select itself as default!... So for some reason, clearing defaults for messaging doesn't work because random messaging app will set as default on it's own, wheather is stock app, goSMS or hangouts.
I guess nobody else have the same problem??? I have 4 browsers, Opera, Chrome, Mozilla and stock browser app and everytime I click on a link (say, from a text message I click a link some friend sent me) phone will ask which browser I want to use and then I pick... that is exactly what I want on text messages! I need the phone to ask me everytime I send a text so I can choose stock app or google voice! but everytime I clear defaults, they go back to defaul on it's own.
As in scroll recent list of messages? Sometimes I'll swipe away a notification and there's no way to bring it back up.. same with emails (not gmail, the actual mail app). As far as I know there's no way to bring it back.
Anyone know of a way or a 3rd party app?

Why would you want to open hangouts on the watch? it only shows you the latest hangout anyway..
basically i'm looking for a way to open recent notifications but what i would like is a way to open apps like hangouts or email, so even old messages can be opened and answered to.

In order for that to work you would have to bring back the notification on the phone. Not sure how you would do that...
I'd like to be able to open hangouts as well. I don't think you really need the notification back, you just want access to the messages. That'd be awesome.

If you use hangouts just for sms you can try wear messenger. You can see all your sms conversations there. If you use hangouts for, well, hangouts then there's no way to do that currently.

Sometimes Titanium Backup makes itself my default message app. Now, anyone with familiarity with TiBu should know that it is not a messaging app. It can't send them or receive them, as far as I can tell.
When it is the default and someone texts me, the text seems to never arrive at my phone. In fact, the only way that I know TiBu has become the default is when someone asks why I'm ignoring their texts and I look at the default apps to find TiBu as my messenger.
Is there a reason why this should be happening? Is there a reason why TiBu should even be an option for default messaging apps? I've attached a pic to prove I'm not crazy. Hopefully someone out there has seen this and has an answer? I'm tempted to uninstall TiBu until I need it, reinstalling every time I need to backup apps and then uninstall it again. That just seems like an avoidable hassle.

It shows up as an option for me as well but it isn't selected as my default.
Inside titanium there is a titanium messages app that is called "Messages (SMS & MMS) com.keramidas.virtual.xml_messages
You can't delete it since it is a part of titanium. Maybe this is the way it backs up the messages. Our phones see that as a possible messaging app.
It's not always my default, it just steals it every so often. A little frustrating, and I can't google for the answer because all i get are pages telling me how to freeze the default messaging app with TiBu.

If I can't delete it, can I freeze it? I'm just wondering why my default changes to TiBu for no reason. I may have to go the messy route of deleting/reinstalling whenever I need it.

There doesn't seem to be an option to uninstall or freeze.
The behavior that I have seen is that TiBu sets itself as the default messaging app when performing restores of SMS messages.
Is it possible that you have some scheduled TiBu jobs running?

The only schedule I have is to "Backup new user+system apps & newer versions". It's not enabled and has never run. I'll delete it, just in case it's giving me that issue, and watch for the problem to reappear.

See if this works. Go to settings, then advanced settings, battery manager and finnaly in protected apps, enable Nova Launcher and Tesla as protected apps, Include also the mail app that you're using it. Otherwise the battery manager will be closing the apps by the standard definitions.
I hope this has helped you.
What do you mean with mail app? I want notifications for missed calls There is no possibility to make phone calls app a protected app

Let me rectify. In advanced settings, battery manager and finnaly in protected apps, have you enabled Nova Launcher and Tesla as protected apps?

I'm using same NovaLauncher, Teslaunread doesnt worked.
Switched to this app - Notifyer Unread Count.
It creates a widget for any app with notifications, including missed calls, sms, and email apps. Get the paid version.

Yes, you're exactly right. As workaround for TeslaUnread, you can put the "contacts" icon in the place of "call", and then, edit the "contact" icon replacing it for the usual one: call.
TeslaUnread works, with "contacts", without any issue.

Sounds good but the problem is, if I want to see who had called me I first have to switch from contacts to phone calls.. did anybody try notifyer unread count app? It has very bad rating in playstore

That's the only downsize of this workaround, we got to switch from contacs to phone calls.
I tried notifyer unread, but the issue is that it creates widgets, That is, for each badge: missing call, email, facebook, and so on. About Teslaunread it seems that has some kind of issues with some apps and likely in marshmallow.
I've tested again and TeslaUnread missed call works on ExDialer but not on stock Dialler.
Can see in picture the two Dialers next to each other. Stock Dialler on the right without badge.
Versions:
Teslaunread: 5.0.6
Nova Launcher: 4.3
ExDialer: v195
Nofications Access must be enabled.
Have not tried on other dialer apps.

Great, because I recently installed ExDialer and Theme for ExDialer MIUI Dark, that fits perfectly on our device, so this is good news.
