[Q] Lock the phone to prevent factory reset - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now with all this fancy new KNOX security, i try to find some useful aspects of it. Even my old notebook can have a bios lock and without that you cannot turn on the thing and no kind of reset can remove it. Are there similar stuff for the s4? I tried encrypt, and it asked a password during boot, but i was able to wipe all from the recovery. Are there a way to prevent that so basically render a stolen phone a paperweight?
thx
edit: after reset samsungs find my mobile function works, but i dont know if that would work without entering a samsung account?

Not possible. A big flaw imo.
Only sort of a solution is to cook a custom rom with some sort of protection build into it. So that when people wipe or do a factory reset, it still has your settings.

Thanks for that info.
Could you point us in the direction to learn how to cook our own stock based roms in which we have put safety/localisation software with pre programmed settings?
Cheers

It seems like avast's anti theft add on to their free anti-virus app has got the feature, though my phone isn't rooted yet so haven't tried.

forgot restrictions password

I forgot my restrictions password.
Apparently Amazon didn't think this trough and there is no way of resetting
it except by doing a factory reset. I want to avoid this option at all cost.
Q1: Is there a way of either finding my password or resting it with out doing a factory reset?
Q2: After rooting, installing su, TWRP etc, etc. if I now do a factory reset is it going to break my kindle? i.e brick it?
Q3: assuming I do end up doing a factory reset, Will I have to reroot/reinstall all my apps?

You are supposed to remember what you set it to.
They do the same thing that most devices that have a secret password do... If you forget it, you reset the device to default. Not sure what you would want them to do.
Keep in mind, Amazon is not expecting you to have anything on your device but the stock ROM, so resetting the device is not that big of a deal.

If it was an easy thing to do it wouldn't be very secure.
Did you make a backup with TWRP after you set everthing up BEFORE you set the password? If so, you should be able to restore that.
Perhaps there is some other way... if so, someone will chime in.
Yeah, forgetting my password is dumb on my part.
I have never owned a smartphone or tablet. I was under the assumption that
standard procedure for this kind of thing was some kind of secret question or
the ability to e-mail the password to you.
on the bright side, My wife just remembered the pass. I would still like to know
the answer to those 3 questions though.

Amazon states that the way to reset (or if you failed more than 4 times) is to do a factory reset.
Ref: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200729330
From the Page:
I forgot my Kindle Fire password.
(Note: This is not your Amazon.com account password.)
After four failed attempts at entering your password, you'll be directed to restore your device to factory default settings. This will delete all content on your Kindle Fire and you'll need to register it again before downloading items from your Amazon account. You can then create a new password for your Kindle Fire.

Really hard to brick the Kindle Fire, even really bad choices by users have been able to be recovered. A factory reset, should just wipe user data.

A factory reset would loose all of your apps. It shouldn't effect root since it isn't reloading a ROM, just clearing user data.
that makes total sense. I wish Amazon would be more open about these kind of things.
I really wish there system was more like apple. a simple pin before any purchase would be much betfer then disabling wifi.
It works the same way as most other Android devices.

Well, I will guess you are not rooted.
The pattern lock, in my opinion, should never be used. And I'll tell you why. It's only secure for stupid people. If a smart person stole you tab, first thing they would look for, is if they get adb access. If they don't, then the next thing, will be to wipe user data, install a stock rom, which will wipe out all this pattern lock nonsense, then sell the tab.
So, install, if an a500, a full stock update rom. Unfortunately, unless you have a backup. this will wipe most data from the tab.

Unfortunately, no. Which is what I stated earlier. This is why I don't use pattern lock.

you should always have this puppies rooted and have TB available

I completely disagree with MD. In the tablet world, there are probably more stupid people than smart, so I'd rather lose my tablet and all my data to the ether rather than have someone just be able to swipe to gain access to all my information. And why make it easier for the smart person?

[Q] How to prevent tablet thief from wiping the entire System?

Hello there!
I have this Cerberus anti-theft application which should try and help me prevent thieves from getting away with my tablet, but I am asking myself..
What if the thief enters my custom recovery mode and does a Factory Reset or Wipes System? Will it not delete my Cerberus application as well?
Maybe some of you will be asking why I have the recovery image flashed the tablet, helping the bad guys wiping my data. Simply because I find it the easiest way to change custom ROMs when updates are available.
Even if I don't have this custom recovery flashed to my device, it isn't that hard to flash one and after that wipe the data.
And now that I checked again, the Reset to Factory option, from Settings, isn't even password protected on my device.
What I am asking you guys is it if there is some way to protect my TWRP custom recovery by password (or just the Wipe Data section) and also my Factory Reset option on my tablet.
Or if there is exists a password protected recovery?
Thank you very much!

Overall, no matter what you do, a smart enough thief could blank your hardware by flashing a stock image in fastboot. There is really no way to protect against that. I don't think a PW protected recovery is available, but if it were the thief could flash over that too.
Tools like Cerberus rely on thieves being ignorant enough to not try very hard. The extra features for rooted users provide protection against thieves who have a bit less ignorance - you can have Cerberus install itself to the system partition so that an on-device factory reset won't remove it. But there is no perfect genius-proof solution, as a smart enough thief can overwrite everything including Cerberus.

Hi, I have a big problem... // BLUETOOTH

Hi, (this is my first post here)
well I have a really nasty problem. Since my kitkat update there have been apps facing a lot of issues, thanks to their bugs/wanted changes with the permission setup and so on... In an attempt to fix that I tried to flash the new A7 firmware yesterday. (was on the unbranded A6 from Poland)
The problem was that because I'm unbranded, it FAILED at the end of the flash. So the obvious solution would be to flash the FW with a PIT file. But I don't want to loose my data and restore everything. It will take me 8 hours at least. (and this with nandroid backups and what not)
Well after some trial and error it booted up. But the system was corrupted i.e FCs and and and... So I flashed A6 back. All worked/works well now but I have an enormous problem:
The Bluetooth is broken. It tries to turn itself on but doesn't get anywhere. And in the eventually it stops, after 30/40 seconds. And after that it starts again. Well the obvious solution would be to go and delete the bluetooth data/cache and also delete the /data/misc/bluedroid/ folder. But nope. No success. And the same goes for reflashing/dalvik cache+cache wiping and so on. I also tried to take the battery out for some time.
Well the catlog show a lot of problems. It seems to be permission problems in this case too. I know that you suggest that I should only wipe it. But if i restore this **** will get back too. And re-installing everything from scratch will take me 2.5 days. I have like 750 apps or something.
Please help me with this, I beg you!
This is the catlog(filtered):

But anyway I know that I can fix it if i restore fresh. But I want to repair the Bluetooth, without factory resets.

This is why I use cwm to make a backup...
But seriously, it looks like you might need to do a complete wipe... It sounds like some fragment of the A7 rom has been left there to corrupt your bluetooth....
Pain I know but sometimes this is the only way....

I love many things about android, but one thing that seems to completely miss is the ability to factory reset only certain things like your settings, radios and so on.
Is there really no way to extract everything there has to be, from A6? Like zeroing all bluetooth files but nothing else?

Did you edit or flash the platform.xml(extSD fix KK) by any chance??
If so, others have reported Bluetooth breaking (among other things) after editing/flashing the platform.xml. The only fix was to start from scratch (factory reset).

Yeah you're right. But I still can't wipe... Like that would mean hell for me.
I really DON'T UNDERSTAND why I can't reverse it. Why flashing that zip messed eveything up. Like why doesn't it work now that I've restored the platform.xml backup? Are you shure that there isn't any way? It really doesn't make any sense at all.

Well, I didn't encounter this problem when I edited the file. But I'm just relaying other's, who had this prob and had to factory reset. I would of thought restoring the old platform.xml, setting right permission & rebooting would have fixed it, but apparently that doesn't work. You could possibly try this as a last ditch effort, but going by what other's have experienced, I think resetting is going to be the only fix.
Would you like me to upload my platform file for you to test?
EDIT: (you'll need root) here's one I prepared earlier- rename the xls to xml, move to /system/etc/permissions and set permissions (file)6,4,4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49574602

Who in this world put that crazy idea in your head??? Did you even try? Maybe you should
Well I really love android, I do. And it has too many good aspects to switch back to iOS, BUT, Two things really are missing:
an uncomplicated, selfupdating store for mods (it's slowly getting better with the arrival of xposed framework but we still aren't at the same level).
Before xposed, xda was the only place for mods. And devs have to implement auto updating features in their apps themselves if they want it...
With xposed it's as I said better but not really the same actually.
And the last thing is really about my problem here. Nandroid backups/etc are good but not always an option with 25/30 gb of data on your phone (im not including media only apps and so on). So I really ask myself why there isn't a restore/reset option for some things like the system backbone, wifi, bluetooth etc. And this whole permission thing is really pathetic.
I also miss Icloud because it does backups without living a big fingerprint on the device. No bat drain and no errors. Carbon/Helium and all that other crap even titanium are really good but to complicated and battery/process hungry compared to icloud.
So while almost everything else is awesome about android IMO, this really sucks ass. And it's not that I am a noob or to stupid to backup. It's about the fact that it's not as convenient.
Well well....

Using avast! Hard Reset Protection

If I somehow brick my custom ROM and need to back up to a previous state, will this security app cause problems and not allow me to fix my phone?
Just wondering! Thanks.

I always used that, and never had a problem flashing roms (didnt turn it off before flashing)
i think it only stops say if you lost your phone, and somebody found it, and they did the hard reset option in storage (factory reset)
doesnt think it stops it at all at the custom recovery/ODIN level

Ah, that makes me feel a lot better. Thanks man.
But does that mean they could instead flash a backup or something onto the phone to bypass that "hard" reset?

yes, if a computer geek finds it you're done
but with sprint you can have them blacklist the EMEI
on GSM they could still use your phone
