Inexplicable battery drop; no distinct partial wakelocks. - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When keeping my phone on idle during the night, it dropped by around 30%.
I have installed BetterBatteryStats.
The largest user of the battery is "Android OS", according to the battery graph in the settings menu. However, in BBS, the largest partial wakelock is Connectivity Service, which was on for only ~6 minutes.
However, under CPU states, it says that the CPU was idling at 250 MHz for many hours?
This is undoubtedly some sort of phantom battery drain. It has occured for many weeks during the use of the phone.
In addition, with 'Wakelock Detector', it too says that the largest wakelock is usually for around 6 minutes, by Facebook more often that not. However, the total stats say that the phone was awake the entire time, and it has not entered Deep Sleep at all.
I would greatly appreciate your help and tips. Thanks

You could try ds battery saver from Google play i use it and loose about 3% over night 7 hours

Yeah this looks weird.
I'm no BBS expert, but what I would do is, disable everything. Weather widgets and so on, Facebook sync and whatever else you have syncing in the background. Basically make it a dumb phone temporarily by disabling all the stuff you have running.
Then reboot and let it sit for an hour without touching it.
Check BBS again, choose "since boot" and look for partial wakelocks and battery consumption.
If it seems OK, turn something back on, for example add a weather widget and enable Facebook sync again. Don't enable too many things, just one or two! Reboot. Let it sit for an hour without touching it. Check BBS again. If the result now is again worse than it was before, you know that something you just added or enabled is causing the drain.
If everything seems OK, enable something else, whatever it may be - an RSS reader syncing, Instagram, Flipboard, Skype - I don't know what you have on your phone. Reboot and let it sit, check BBS again.

10 hours of WiFi on and WiFi running. There's your phantom drain.
Let me guess, you have scanning enabled in Wifi settings?

Thanks for the detailed advice. I'll disable everything, reboot, and then keep it for the night. And I'll install DS Battery Saver.

Nope, I'm afraid not.

UPDATE
I did as you advised before, disabling everything. The drop over the night was only 10% this time, but this inexplicable drop persists nevertheless.

I had the same thing happening yesterday night. When my phone is drained, I usually charge it in the evening, reboot and then let it sit for about 5-6 hrs with everything except NFC off. Normally, I have a battery drop within those 5-6 hrs of about 1-3%. But yesterday morning after the same procedure, I had lost 30%. I did a reboot then and battery usage went back to normal. So I charged my phone yesterday night and did a reboot, and surely enough I only had 1-3% of battery lost over night. Strange.

Another battery issue?

I went to bed with the phone charged to 100% or atleast very close to it since it had been plugged into my laptop for a few hours.
Unplugged it and left it at bedside at 12:00am
Checked the time at 7:00am (didn't bother to look at battery life).
By 10:00am the phone wasn't responding, kept rebooting with a red battery icon. I plugged it into the wall charger and it booted up showing 0% on the battery.
I also had it on low power mode: everything off and mobile data set to 2g only. I also had no activity on the phone: no calls, emails or notifications.
I've done this before and I'll usually wake up to it in the 90% area of battery life, but now it's completely dead?!
Anyone haves omething like this occur?

Mm.. well, first thing I'd do is check your widgets/apps running. Some of them leave a WakeLock open, and force CPU to run at 100%.. that'd kill the battery.
Another thing to check is any big data parsing apps, like RSS with webpages for example (NewsRob).. they are excellent apps, but if you set them up for constant sync they will kill ur battery.
Unless your battery is a complete mess, there is no reason why it should drain so fast, unless there are some nasty apps running.
BTW, check out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=669497
You really don't have to worry about using 2G over 3G (EDGE drains MORE power than 3G, actually) and turning everything off for battery power. Your problem is elsewhere.
It happened to me once. Woke up to a completely dead phone. I assume something I was running got out of hand. Nothing I had installed regularly kept it awake, but it could have been a bug in something that used 100% CPU, or at least kept the CPU awake the whole night.

It's small things, for example a CPU meter widget I had secretly ran a WakeLock and kept my CPU at 998MHz all the time to monitor it.
Or, could be just a poorly written app/widget. Not saying that this is the definite reason, but this is the first thing I'd check for.
how do i know if my phone is set at 324MHz even on sleep/standby?
i have it setup to 324/224 standby, but i dont really know if the phone is going to those clock speeds as soon as its on standby.

I have a few apps that sync, such as Pure Calendar / Messenger but nothing that should drain it that quickly. I hadn't installed any new apps and never had this occur, so maybe it's a bug where something caused the CPU to run at full overnight. I'll leave it unplugged tonight too and see what happens.

Battery problems?

My new note's battery seem weird after I let it run to 1% and then charge up to 100%.
After that, it seems to lose battery very much faster.
Left overnight, it went from 79% to 49%!! a 30% drop!!
I checked Battery status report battery health is good and average 33-35 degrees temperature.
Bulk of battery usage is reported for Display (62%, "time on" of 1hr 30m) ...
Is this normal??
What can I do?
Thanks.
Maybe the battery needs some recalibration, run it down to 1% then charge the phone while its still off.
Here's the battery level profile...
Not sure what is keeping the phone awake even while screen-off??
Any help or advice to diagnose and resolve the battery issues appreciated.

Try a factory reset and then calibrate the battery.
Just woke up after the first night with the Note. I had 45% battery left when i went to bed, and now 9 hours later it's at 43%.

You diagnosed the problem correctly by identifying the device being awake while the screen is off. I suggest two tools to narrow it down:
1. Cpu Spy, Market, free, displays how much time the CPU spent in the different power states. During the night it should almost completely be in deep sleep.
2. BetterBatteryStats, Market, ~2.50$, allows to identify apps with wakelocks, apps which prevent the system to enter the deep sleep power state while the screen is off and the device basically is idleing. On CM Spareparts xan do that for free, for Samsung devices I first have to find a free alternative app that works...
No wipe needed (yet), no delete this or do that. First find the villain, then shoot em, not the other way round.

Installed BetterBatteryStats,
but there is lots of information, and I have little clue what these constitute or how to identify what apps cause the issues??
You could post screenshots of all the screens of betterbatterystats and we will try to help you.
Charge the phone to 100% and disconnect it right before you go to sleep, enter cpuspy and reset its counters. Then enter task manager and kill all the programs and clean the memory. Now go to sleep and when you wake up post screenshots of the built in battery stats, betterbatterystats and cpuspy.
Hi
I have a similar problem, my battery keeps draining entirely too much for what I think it should. Mine gets drained about 40% in about 10 hours of very light use.
BetterBatteryStats shows it is WiFi that has a humongous amount of wakelocks, but the thing here is I have WiFi disabled.
Image (BetterBatteryStats): http://antti.vahtera.org/images/SC20111221-020623.png
CPU Spy shows nothing that looks that weird to me, although I rather wonder why so little deep sleep and so much 200MHz, but that might be if deep sleep has a longer "counter" than it did on SGS/SGS2. If I use the phone to check time, or twitter from a widget couple of times per hour, does SGN enter deep sleep during those "breaks"?
Image (CPU Spy): http://antti.vahtera.org/images/SC20111221-020441.png
But, the one that caught my eye, was the stock Battery Info window. During the (almost) entire 10h time the phone was awake?! Why in the whole wide world? Does SGN really have some bug with WiFi keeping it awake even though it is disabled?
Image (Battery Info -window): http://antti.vahtera.org/images/SC20111221-020744.png
I really wanna get behind this. I love this phone, but this battery drainage begins to be a problem for me. I got about 2-5% drain per night with SGS2 and 10-15% per day on similar usage.

yeah, there's something seriously wrong with your phone. Are you rooted ? would you consider a full wipe and maybe a different ROM ?
Not rooted, not modified in any serious way either. (Using GO Launcher EX, not TouchWiz launcher, that's really the extend of modification on this phone.)
Android version is 2.3.6, Baseband N7000XXKK5, kernel 2.6.35.7-N7000XBKK4
This is what was shipped with the phone. It's unbranded and unlocked.
I haven't really done anything to it but installed apps from Android Market (and a couple with Samsung Apps).
EDIT: This is my day-to-day phone with all settings as I like them and all things set, so I would like if I wouldn't have to do a full wipe. But if nothing else helps, I guess I'll have to, in the end.
I hope someone will be able to help you cause I've never seen anything like that.

This might help...
I had the same problem. The first night my Note was dropping from 100% down to about 50% when I was asleep and the screen was off.
In the battery stats I could see that it was the Android core that used all this power.
So I tried a couple things to see if it helped:
1) I went to WiFi-settings and set it to turn off WiFi when screen off. This is a setting that is not on by default, you have to set it yourself.
2) I turned off AutoSync (Google account and so on)
Those to settings removed the overnight powerdrain problem. The next night it only went from 100% to about 98% when I slept
And since I am a serious betterysaver I also turned off autolight on screen, and set it to lowest light possible (still nice picture). I turned on the "Autoadjust screenpower), turned off all animations, turned off all kind of vibrations on the phone.
I left the"System powersetting" alone. It didnt save much power and it made the phone slower.
All in all, now my battery is great, I still have lot of juice left after a full day of using my Galaxy Note
I seem to have fixed my problem, without having to do a full wipe. I don't know which part it was that finally did it, but I'm glad it now behaves like I think it should. (about 2% battery drain in ~5h in pocket, one 1min phonecall and two or three times checking time from lockscreen.)
Anyway, I apparently ALSO had the infamous problem with Mediaserver eating humongous amounts of battery, so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with the WiFi keeping it awake or was just a separate problem.
Long story short, here's what I did:
a) installed JuiceDefender, had it manage Wifi
b) turned Wifi on, restart
c) turned Wifi off, restart
[d) installed nomedia manager and excluded most directories from mediascanner]
e) turned phone off, recharged to 100%.
Seems to be working now. No WiFi wakelocks, no mediaserver eating CPU, deep sleep ~70% of the time.

GSam Battery Monitor Screen Usage?

Every night, my battery is drained by 7-8% even though, GPS, WiFi, all radios are off and the phone is in airplane mode (done automatically via LLama scripts). I installed GSam Battery Monitor to try to figure out what was going on and it indicated that even though the screen was dark, it was draining the battery (and was the primary culprit). Is this accurate or is it a bug? Anyone else seeing something like this on their Nexus 4?
Mine shows 78% usage in dark.. I think that just means how much of battery total it was used while the phone screen was off. I'm taking a completely random guess here though.

So you reset the app right before going to bed and checked it first thing in the morning and in the 7 hours you slept, the main battery drain came from the screen?
I use the same app and I never noticed anything wrong. Still, battery readings are not always accurate... sometimes when I recharge my phone, it stays 100%for a few hours, then it drops 7-10% in a matter of an hour...and that's completely normal I say you shouldn't worry about it too much as long as you get satisfying usage times..

I'm not happy w/battery life and trying to track down what the culprit is. If all major services are off at night, 7-8% battery drain doesn't seem normal to me. Granted this is apples and oranges, but my iPad Gen 3 in the same configuration remains at 100% overnight.
If doing nothing drains nearly 10% over 6-7 hours, no surprise I've got issues during the day.
I've noticed the same thing, one time I didnt turn the screen on on my phone, then I went to screen and it showed 0% discharge while screen on, and 7% discharge while off. I'm running the latest version of Viper, I'm also confused and I wonder if theres some issue where maybe power is being sent to the screen even though it's not on.

Your phone probably isn't going into sleep. The Nexus 4 seems to be prone to insomnia caused by apps that don't cause a problem on other devices.
To check this download CPU Spy from the play store. Run it, reset timers to zero, and with the phone on battery (i.e. not on charge) let it rest for 30 minutes or so, then check the figures.
You should see Deep Sleep as > 90%, if not, or it is listed as an unused state, your phone isn't sleeping.
To fix this you either work forward or backwards!
Work forward:
Factory reset, install CPU Spy, run the test and see your phone is now deep sleeping.
Start installing applications one by one and after each install, run the app, then run the CPU Spy test again.
Eventually you will find the app causing the problem, all you can do is avoid that app. Note you may have more than one app causing a problem so keep checking after each install.
Work backwards:
Start by un-installing an app at a time restarting your phone in between then running a CPU Spy test. Start with any live wallpapers (even if not set to be used) you have installed, then any weather widgets. Note just un-installing is not enough, you must restart after each one.
Eventually your phone will start deep sleeping again so finding the problem app.
Hope that helps.
Regards
Phil
I tried your advice, and my phone is going into deep sleep around 90% of the time, so I don't think that it's a rogue app. I keep my phone on the dimmest setting at all times, and I only get 2.5 hours of screen on time. I have an anker battery.

Unexplainable battery drain

For a month or more I'm facing totally unexplainable battery drain.
As seen on the screens below, the phone is awake, but it is not detected anywhere - not by android nor by GSam. In any case the battery draws faster.
I have one observation tho - this happens after I make phone calls. Not every time, but once per 2,3 days.
Any ideas?

You have this problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/explanation-horrible-note-4-battery-t3004274
I'm pretty sure that I don't have this issue. Yes, the percentage in GSam maybe high, but I don't believe this reflects what is happening.
First of all - I don't have bad battery life. Usually my over night drain is less than 1%/1h.
Second - the issue appears sporadically.
Third - in the provided thread I don't see the issue appearing in stock battery monitor, while mine appear.
At last - my battery drains faster only while the issue is present and before I restart. After that it is back to normal ...
@Spo0f
Just some suggestions maybe you're using 3g I always have that turned off and switch it on when I use it my guess is that some apps are causing your drain after a call maybe like you said if you're not fimiliar with greenify I suggest you use it to stop all those apps and system apps also uninstall all those bloatware you don't need or at least freeze them if you don't mind lower the resolution to 1080p with nomone app use power save or disable dvfs and use an app to lower and raise the CPU to save juice when not needed....
Thanks for the suggestions, but as I said - this problem appear sporadically - home when using WiFi as well as outside when using 3G.
All of the rest is done - I'm no newby

Oh sorry mate well I don't use much 3g so I can't help you there but if you're having drainage when you're using WiFi in general then maybe you should reconsider investigating the post above with the link I don't have so much drainage on connectivity with 3g or WiFi....viewing the pics you uploaded it seems suspicious.... Maybe an app? I don't know...
Use wakelock detector

My overnight drain was also very low, but that was because the faulty device on the network was asleep at night too (my desktop).
If you're not rooted, use the PC version of Wakelock Detector at the end of your day and post screenshots of your highest drainers for the various categories. In my case, the device was being woken up by something on the network and it showed.
Bear in mind that actively downloading something in the time period will also raise wifi power used but more stats will help.
The fact that you're still experiencing a lot of drain even when outside suggests it might be a rogue app
One phone call today and after it the phone stayed awake.
Because I had issue with the PC WLD the screen shots are from 11 minutes after one of the disconnects. The device was awake all of them.

I also checked out my battery behaviour this night and was very disappointed. Although my phone was in flight mode and every peripherals and services shut down, today morning my phone was crying for energy. So I made a quick investigation in my power diagram and found out, that "Android OS" requested a wakelock during the whole power-on time. So I installed "CPU Spy" to check in which states the phone was really over the whole charging period. I couldn't believe my eyes. Although the kernel should do it's job good, cause most of the CPU times are in lower freqeuncy states, the deep sleep mode was never activated.
Therefore I installed an app called "Wakelock Detector" to check out which apps could cause that. I found out, that S Health had a big amount of wakelocks and also active-time, so the first thing was to disable S Health. After some minutes I checked back, but nevertheless still no deep sleep time in "CPU Spy".
So I searched around and found another one arguing about the wakelocks and that they could be the products of some programming issues concerning WiFi. The should be gone, after turning off WiFi and rebooting yout phone. And it seems that he was right. I waited some time and hooray, "CPU Spy" listed the phone state "Deep Sleep" the first time as an active state and also with the major active-time. So at least that was some step ahead. (I have to remark, that S Health was already unfrozen at this time, so S Health should not be responsible in any way.)
The next step was to reactivate WiFi, leave it on and set the phone on standby. After some time I checked back again the phone showed even more deep sleep time. So that was an improvement. I reactivated everything and waited some time... Deep Sleep all over the time. Can't figure out for now, if it was S Health, WiFi, or anything else that caused the wakelock for sure. At least the reboot helped. I'll check that out on a long-term test, maybe I get some further conclusions.

Battery Drain | Idle

My Essential PH 1 is draining a lot.
Phone idle is taking most power with approximately 17%. Screenshots attached.
Can you please advise if this is normal and ways to minimize battery drain ?

Are you showing off? because those are amazing numbers. You're on track for 35 hours! I get around 26. Your bigger killer is What's App, but that's expected for a Facebook app. 17% for idle means your phone is on and doing nothing 17% of the time.

Are you showing off? because those are amazing numbers. You're on track for 35 hours! I get around 26. Your bigger killer is What's App, but that's expected for a Facebook app. 17% for idle means your phone is on and doing nothing 17% of the time.

Nope I am not showing off, I think i am having huge drains when I am asleep. Most of the time in that graph is idle time so i am thinking it should be better ?
Again I moved recently to droid from iOS so i am unsure of the droid power management baselines.

Cool. I didn't mean to seem mean, but those are good numbers. If your phone is on, and you have push notifications (pretty much every social media app, phone, sms, etc.) you're going to have drain. Even if the phone was off, the battery would drain somewhat. But you have What's App and other chat apps, so that'll use battery, even if your asleep, the phone isn't. It's the only way you would be able to receive calls, text, updates, etc.
That 17% looks steep, but it's all relative to a small screen. over the span of 20 hours and you still have almost 50% battery, especially with "free" apps that are basically advertising engines pushing ads at your every minute. Having Phone Idle at the top is not a bad thing, it just means you don't use your phone as much as you use What's App.
1% per hour is good, better than our S8 even
I had enabled "Cellular data always active" and it chewed through my battery life. I turned it off and can now last 1.5 days on a charge.
My phone is draining 12% overnight. And phone idle is top of the list. What does this phone idle do? There was a random night where the phone only dropped 1%. But most nights, it's draining around 10% with phone idle at the top.
Update: setting wifi to not stay on while phone is sleeping seems to fix the drain issue.

Does disabling it affect receiving messages that rely on mobile data such as WhatsApp?
Where is the "cellular data always active" setting? I don't see it. Have not updated to run Oreo.
My battery was dropping from 95% to 5% overnight. Did a factory reset which helped, but I'm still losing 17-20% overnight. Seems odd to me on a brand new phone, but I have never owned an Android before. I have blocked notifications and location services from nearly all of my apps. Any advice other than what has already been posted?
If your losing that much overnight it's probably a bad app.
I don't use it, but have read that the Facebook messenger is good for that. As in eating up a battery overnight.

I can promise you that that's not normal, especially for this phone. Overnight battery loss is minimal, 15 hours of idle with a 10% drain is what I'm getting. That's pretty amazing. I'd check your apps and ask the general android forums for advice. I also bet there is a rogue app draining you juice. chat and social media apps with all their pushed content and friend updates are huge battery killers.
Install accu battery ,charger to full last thing at night ,don't touch through night ,then see what's draining battery ,mine drains by about 2/3% through 8/9 hrs at night

It's under developer options settings. I have mine always active without draining my battery noticeable.
The social media apps such as snapchat, facebook, twitter, etc... are the ones draining your battery while your phone is idle so you need to disable their background data running.

The option to Cellular Data Always Active is on the Developer Hidden Menu. If you have it enabled you should be able to turn it off.
Thanks to all for the replies. I thought that restoring factory settings had helped somewhat, but it turns out not to have. Battery has just depleted from 100% to 67% in 3 hours while the phone has sat idle.
The only social media apps I have installed are FB and Whatapp. Notifications for both are turned off. Location services for all apps are also off. The only apps I have installed have been download from the Play Store and have run on my previous phones without causing any trouble. Those who replied all suspect a bad app, so I have installed ACCU Battery as suggested to see if I can nail it down.
Thanks again for the responses.
Try this for one night. Right before bed....
1. Turn OFF WiFi
2. Reboot phone
3. Leave WiFi off after reboot
There is a bug in Google Play Services that affects many people on many different phone types since the November updates.
When on wifi, in certain circumstances (many theories on what the actually trigger is) it will cause Google Play Services to run non stop on certain WiFi networks causing huge battery drain.
In this particular scenario, turning off Wifi does not stop the battery drain. The phone has to be reboot.
I don't know if that is what you are experiencing, as you didn't say if it was an app or system taking so much battery, but I thought I would mention it in case it helps.

Why don't you look in settings/battery and see what is using the highest percentage of the battery?
Have looked in Settings/Battery, but am not seeing anything there that diagnoses the problem to my understanding. Highest use shown is Chrome (4%), then Screen (4%) then Google Play services (3%). ACCU Battery app shows the same. Battery is still losing 10-12% of its charge per hour while the phone is idle.
Have sent a message to Essential support to ask if they know anything about a bug in Google Play services causing battery drain. They have so far only suggested rebooting to safe mode and doing the reset to factory settings. Hasn't helped.
Will try shutting wifi off, rebooting and leaving wifi off tonight as suggested. Not really sure where to go from there even if that does save the battery, as a phone that has its battery drained just by being on wifi is useless to me.
If turning off WiFi and rebooting helps reduce system cpu usage, it is a bug in the software and not the phone. I can reproduce that specific issue on my pixel 2 and Samsung Galaxy s8, too....
If the CPU usage isn't from system, though, or turning WiFi off and rebooting doesn't help then you obviously have a completely different issue and need to troubleshoot further.

Update:. Nothing Essential support has suggested has helped. Battery is draining to zero overnight while phone is idle both when connected to wifi and when not.
Upon learning that I had purchased the phone at a Telus store in Canada, Essential have said that they can't help me further and have referred me to the store for assistance. I'm disappointed in the lack of support from Essential.
