[Q] MJA Update and AOSP/CM/AOKP/Etc... - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I'm currently on the MF9 firmware/baseband/modem running CM10.2 and was debating doing the MJA upgrade. Has anyone tried it? Any reports of AOSP/CM compatability with the MJA firmware?

It works. Thats how people started with the mja update because of the unexpected knox bootloader. Thus create people to have bootloops when trying to do their regular routine. So to get back on track they had to install cm/aokp/vanilla/ge/ or any other aosp based rom to get it to work properly. Until a proper way of getting a workin mja rom. Search is your best friend buddy.

Thanks for your response. I tried searching and gave up after about 20 of fruitless digging through other threads and nothing clear.

Stick w/ MDL and use Blu Kuban made for MDL. Don't really think there are any stable ROMs w/ MF9 w/o random reboots right now...

I've never had a single reboot with this phone on ANY rom, TW or AOSP, MDL or MF9. MF9 has given me zero issues and in fact runs much better than MDL for me.
Just my 2 cents.

I've tried almost all of them. Take your pick. I've had other issues here and there, but never random reboots.

I'm on Sacs rom with stock kernel, and I have never ever had one random reboot, hell I've not had any reboots on any of the roms I've tried before settling on Sacs rom. you must have some other issues at play here, have you tweaked w/e kernel your on? sometimes kernel tweaks are more harm than good if you change setting you're not familiar with, have you tried the stock kernel?

I'm on stock MF9 deodexed rooted never had a reboot. Only time I had reboots was when I set my voltages too low lol.

Nothing out of the ordinary. Just the default factory reset in TWRP (a lot of people will tell you to wipe system as well, but I've never found that to be necessary).

Rooting with MK2?

I have a new S4, and I haven't found a tutorial on how to root with the new Mk2 update. Can I use tutorials from previous updates, or is there something out there that I haven't seen yet? Thanks a lot!

If you're not rooted, you should be able to just take the update. IMO, most of the issues are coming from rooted devices that may not have been totally clean (stock rom, stock recovery, total factory reset) when the update was taken. That's not a worry for a stock phone.
If you want to root afterwards, the CF Auto Root is the way to go for sure.

Two ways. Go to the Download screen and see if there's a line for Knox. It will be either 0x0 or 0x1.
The other way is to go to About Device and see if your at 4.3

One thing to keep in mind. If you take the MK2 OTA, some stuff has not been updated for it yet. Like the free wifi hotspot/tether mod.

I have searched, read, searched, read and search and read and there seems to not be a hotspot mod for rooted mk2 stock rom
Regarding Hotspot on MK2, I found this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48516106
And this individual was able to get hotspot working on MK2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48516106&postcount=88
BUT I can't figure out if this person had the OTA 4.3 MJA/Knox Bootloader beforehand or not because I can't post in the dev forum.
I don't even think I'm able to send PM's, I tried to PM him but don't see the message in my sent items folder. If anyone can figure out if rawintellect 's post is accurate, I'll flash my phone immediately, to hell with the Knox bit.
I probably wouldn't keep the stock rom anyway, so I don't think this would affect me.

Teal Screen After Flashing Any ROM? [GS4 ATT]

Hello XDA-
I have an i337 Galaxy S4 with MK2 firmware. I got Safestrap 3.71 for recovery bypassing and I have a really strange issue. It seems no ROMs that I flash a successful. Ever. I've tried AOSP ROMs, Cyanogen, etc. When I just tried installing Cyanogen I went to ROM slot 1, wiped it of everything except the external SD card, went to install, selected the .zip for MY device off of the external SD, flashed it, and when I reboot I get a teal screen with pulsing pink/brown lines on it. The same applies when I do any other ROM, except sometimes I just get a black screen that endlessly loop reboots.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
You can't flash aosp or cm roms in safe strap. They have to be touch wiz based.

Ahh, are you serious? Safestrap is the only working recovery bypass on my MK2 firmware, ugh. Hopefully Samsung eventually unlocks the bootloader. Well, I'm off to looking for a TouchWiz based ROM then.
Thanks!

You can, however, install Google Edition ROMs, I believe. Search through the Safestrap thread to make sure, but that should allow you a relatively AOSP-like experience.

@nhannon9 Check this thread by @guut13 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221 and look for Blackbox v2.2.1 and pretty clean AOSP rom ...... Read that MK2 INDEX thread ..... anything u should know about MK2...... Goodluck. ....
EDIT : @mattdm I believed that we can't install any 4.3 GPE yet on MK2 + SSV3.71. The closest AOSP experience are Blackbox v2.2.1 from International S4 I9505 .....:thumbup::thumbup:

Have you tried this one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47718525
It's not Kitkat, but it's still nice and clean.
Also, make sure you're using the correct version of Safestrap. One version 3.65 is for MF3 users, and version 3.71 is for MK2 users.

I've seen many people in the past months reporting that they're running GPE ROMs on Safestrap with no problems. Has something changed recently that I don't know about?
EDIT: Ah, I didn't see his edit up there. Sorry for giving false hope! I don't keep up with the Safestrap scene much since I have a Loki'd S4.

Yeah. If you have an MF3 S4 then you can run a 4.2.2 GE ROM, but us on MK2 are out of luck for a full AOSP experience unless an exploit is implemented.

Or, you could go search for them? That's why there's a search function. It's not there for looks and it works. We don't need all these threads posting and asking for other members to look for something for you. It's not hard to find them.

Can't get back to stock firmware on Galaxy S4?

I had sprints official 4.3. Then i rooted and had cyanogenmod 4.4.2. I wanna go back to stock so I downloaded 4.2.2 from galaxys4root.com and tried flashing through odin but it keeps failing. Someone please help me! it's driving me crazy
Search a bit more. You cannot go back to an earlier version of android through odin. you have to get a 4.3 tar. Either MJA or MK2.

Could you please elaborate? I'm a noob (and a dweeb) but I just got updated to KitKat and it sucks. I'm a photographer and I use several photo editing apps that suddenly are not allowed to write to my SD card. I need Jellybean back.

Once updated to kitkat using ota then your stuck with kitkat you can downgrade back to jelly bean. Only way would be flashing a mk2 or mja rom. But you would still be in kitkat nae.

Like he already stated, best you could do now is install a custom recovery after rooting your phone, then flash a Jellybean ROM from there. You familiar with doing any of that?

There is a one line edit needed to restore full write capability to the sdcard with kit kat. It takes about 10 seconds to accomplish but you must be rooted. There is no way to odin back to 4.3 if you OTA to 4.4.2, like stated earlier, you can install a stock like 4.3 rom but I don't think you need to do that. Search for the sdcard write problem in these forums and edit the platform.xml file and all your stuff will write to the sdcard again.
