[Q] Nexus 7 advantages compare to another 7 inch tablet

Hey man, I want to buy Nexus 7 because of its price ( cheaper than the other, LOL XD)
But I still cannot decide which one to buy ( N7 or Samsung galaxy tab 2 7 inch )
This what makes me worries :
- N7 can be cracked easily
- N7 don't have external memory ( and I already searched over and ONLY found the 32 GB version, which is too much for me and makes it expensive )
- I don't know if N7 can play lots of music / video formats
- I don't know if Google wants to make another 7 inch tablet with a low price ( N7 price is VERY lower than the other FAMOUS tablet out there).
So can you help me to :
- Give me what do you think of N7 advantages compare to Samsung 7 inch tablet ( because this tablet is his rival for me, LOL )
- Are my statements up there are correct or wrong ?
- Are you having issues with your N7 ? ( Please give what you do to solve it )
- CONVINCE me more about N7, LOL
- Anybody has news if google wants to make another 7 inch low price tablet ?
- Can you guys recommend me another 7 inch tablet ( no IPAD MINI or Kindle Fire )

The N7 is amazing. Its a Nexus device so it is first in line for updates and will always have the latest software available first. I personally will never buy anything that's not labeled Nexus ever again, but then again I'm very into rooting and custom ROMs.
I see no evidence of any weak screen or crack threat. I have no lifting and my device seems very solid. Don't drop it.
I have 16 gig version and it has plenty of memory. I have 9 gigs used on my gnex and there's tons of crap on my SD card so I'm not worried about space.
Hardware wise it is superior to most all other tablets and if you root, install a custom kernel, you can over clock and improve speed and fluidity.
My mom has a kindle fire and the Nexus embarrasses it.

i just picked up one last Friday at staples and man it is the best thing i ve bought for myself in a long time
now like the other post said i have no problem with lifting screen and it is very solid and stable. i have rooted it and tried a couple of roms
and its great if you download MX Player you can play just about any file format out the box. as for as dropping it ....DONT but that's common sense
get a case to protect it i just ordered the OEM case from amazon word of advise on the concern about the limited gb learn how to convert to MP4.H264 this is your best bet at getting the most out of your space and keep great video quality. music just use small bit-rate 128 should be fine and you should be great . i have 5 movies 1 season of true blood,3 videos and 5 albums and i still have 9 GB left so this is my advise good luck.

I got mine last week (32gb w/3G) rooted it and am having a blast with it. Loaded a couple of custom ROMs and lost 3G so I went back to stock rooted with no issues. I dumped the original Xoom for it and am not complaining. I picked up a Siedio case and have a 32gb Maxell AirStash on order for storage. I too could not decide between the GTab and the Nexus because I wanted LTE, but after getting the N7, even with having only 3G I am not disappointed.

I bought my nexus 7 (32gb as I always choose 32gb when possible) a few weeks back and have been so happy with it I haven't even rooted it. Build quality is excellent, none of the "common" problems here, plays any movie type I've tried using MX player, and plays any music file I've tried just fine with Google music. As for cracks, the screen is a 7 inch slab of glass, you want to do your best not to drop it. With that said I feel like my blurex case would do a decent job of protecting the screen from any potential mishaps, and the magnetic sensor that turns screen on and off as you open and close is freakin sweet!
And it's a nexus, once you try a nexus and experience the nexus difference you'll not want anything else.

The Samsung Tabs are great. I have a first gen Samsung Galaxy 7" from Sprint that I run CM10 on (JB 4.1.2) and while it's thicker and has a lower resolution, it plays fine. That said, getting official support from Samsung is a joke. My Tab never made it past Gingerbread and if it weren't for the great devs (gods) the tab would be almost useless now.
Samsung likes to use its Exynos processor (which is awesome) but doesn't support 4G, so there tends to be lots of variants in hardware... which can really make or break a buy if you don't buy the right model that has the most support.
As far as hardware comparisons, why bother? They both have the same basic hardware and aside from one being a smudge faster then the other, feature differences are trivial EXCEPT for any of the NOTE line because of their PEN. If you have a specific use for a pen such as notes or drawing... there really is no other choice.
A 32gb N7 is more then sufficient in storage needs. After ditching a memory card on my Galaxy Nexus 32gb... I've grown kind of fond of larger single storage. You don't have to worry about where to store your stuff so that CMW will find it and let you flash, you also don't have to worry about SOME apps installing to internal while some install to external. You just have 1 large pool.
Lack of SD makes it a little complicated to transfer files on and off your tab, until you figure out there are easier and better ways such as WiFi File Explorer (recommended) or Cloud storage. WiFi File Explorer creates a Web-Enabled Server on your device which you can access from any Browser. Makes it easy to wirelessly transfer large files from device to device, such as phone to tablet.
The N7 feels great in the hand. The really only issue is screen lift on one side but seriously it is like 1mm difference that everyone is freaking out over. No one ever even notices it until someone mentions it and they go looking for it. Asus has corrected the problem and newer devices such as a 32gb or 3G are already fixed and should be a non-issue now.
I recommend the N7 to everyone and lots of family now own one. On the plus side, we have the latest Android with multiuser support and additional cool features. Only a few Samsung tabs will see this. PLUS in a year from now, we'll get bumped to 5.0 when the Samsung tabs are forgotten about. This makes for great resale value and life longevity.

The nexus 7 is a amazing tablet to use. Since it carry's the nexus name you can be sure there will be updates.
No matter if you choose to run it stock but rooted or choose to run custom ROM on it. Basic web surfing and watching some YouTube videos nets me little over 24 hours on a full charge.
If your thinking about buying a 7" tablet. Go ahead and buy the 32gb nexus 7 you will be glad you did. Just be careful don't drop it.
I owned my nexus 7 for two weeks now and love it. The nexus 7 is the 2nd android tablet I ever owned. The first being the older kindle fire but I sold it for the nexus.

I have a Galaxy Tab 7.7 with Verizon and just got a Nexus 7 with 3G because I'm fed up with Verizon and Samsung dragging their butts releasing updates. While the screen's a little smaller and HSPA+ is a slower than LTE, I'm not at all feeling like I downgraded.
Anyone in the market for a GT 7.7?

N7 all the way! Just got one 2 days ago and wondered why didn't I get it earlier! Build quality is top notch but as with any tablet, be careful not to drop it! 4.2.1 is also an absolute joy to use

I would get the international version of the Samsung and use it as a phone. N7 may get that functionality with some awesome Dev work.....emphasis on the may.

I disagree, I don't think the Nexus can crack easily. Me being stupid, I had put it in my pocket every day, which stressed the screen a little bit each day. It took 2 months to actually break, which to me seems like a long time. That's just my opinion though. As the the price, I think it should be a deciding factor, because why should you get an iPad Mini for example, when you could get N7 for $120 cheaper. I know there are some perks, but still.

Next Tablet

So I recently had and Acer Iconia A100 die and need to replace it. Due to budget constraints I'm choosing between the Galaxy Tab 2 and the Nexus 7.
I'm familiar with the spec differences but I can't pull the trigger on one or the other. Any N7 users want to convince me? Let me know your thoughts... positive and negative...

You obviously already made up your mind to get the Nexus 7.

Whatever you do DON'T buy Galaxy Tab 2 they lag as hell, rather buy Galaxy Note 10 inch or 8 inch.
But if you're still unsure then flip a coin, you will know which choice to make when you realize which side you hope it lands on.

I only have some experience with playing with the Tab 2 WiFi version at WorseBuy. If you buy the Galaxy Tab 2 7", you will retain two things from your A100: the non-HD screen and the proprietary charging port. The 720p screen on the Nexus 7 makes a huge difference in usage, especially texts will be sharper and easier to read. Having a standard microUSB port is a huge plus because the cable is cheap so you can charge the device anywhere.
In term of performance, the Nexus 7 will be far faster with it's Tegra3. The Tab 2 7" have a TI OMAP dual core 1GHz, my Galaxy Nexus have the same CPU brand, but a faster model clocked at 1.2GHz and the same outdated PowerVR SGX540 GPU. I can tell you the Nexus 7 is a much smoother and lag free experience than the Galaxy Nexus and will handle 3D games much better. I know benchmark don't mean alot to some people, but this should give you an idea: Tab 2 7", Nexus 7. PS. I have heard people complaining about lags on the Nexus 7, well... I simply don't have it.
Where the Tab 2 win is the 3G version can make direct phone calls which the Nexus 7 3G can't, but it also cost more than the Nexus 7 3G. Of course, you already know it have microSD slot, back camera, and you can get an HDMI adapter, which is overpriced imo ($40) and will add to the cost of the tablet. The Nexus 7 doesn't have any form of HDMI out which sucks.
The most important factor for me is the software, and what follows might be a cliche thing you will hear in a Nexus forum. With a Nexus device you will get latest Android updates from Google and a larger developing community. As for the Tab 2, Samsung said 4.2.2 will be the last update and even with custom roms there aren't a lot of developers working on it. Despite what I said above, if the Nexus 7 only had the Tab 2 specs, and vice versa, I would still get the Nexus 7 because the benefits of AOSP, Google updates and many custom rom developers which makes a big difference in long term value.
You can also look at the Asus Memo Pad 10 if you don't mind going with a 10" tablet which is a good budget tablet. The text isn't sharp in 720p resolution on a 10" screen. However it has lots good benefits the Nexus 7 doesn't have, such as dedicated microHDMI out, USB OTG out of the box (no root needed), microSD slot, back camera, and Tegra3 chip as well. Also unlike the Transformer tablets, it have standard microUSB port. I had to return it because the digitizer on my unit went haywire and I didn't know how soon it will get CyanogenMod support.

I'm really not worried about the lack of an SD card on the N7, I think I can live on 16GB. The lack of a rear camera worries me a little but I think the performance and Android support are winning me over.

I have an Nexus 7, and i shouldn't know why it is bad. It's a fast and easy to use tablet. Very smooth. It's cheaper than the galaxy tab. But galaxy tab is not bad.... It depends on what you are planning to do with it.

You get what you pay for ..
IF it where not from you saying you have a very limited budget i would say with no doubt. Get a Galaxy Note . I have the nexus 7 and Note 10.1 . when im home The Nexus sits on its charger. When im out it goes with me because it fits in my purse. But lately i have been keeping the note under my arm when i go out. I love the Multi window Cascade/ Dual screen mode. You can Run up to 20 apps at one time. Most do not suspend while having another app in action such as hand writing a note on the wacom digitize r . For school or real work productivity . Price verses performance . There is not a tablet on the planet better then the Note.
Now the nexus 7 is the fastest slim sleek device for on the go use. I could never mount my note to the dash to use as a gps. It will NOT fit in my purse It uses a propritary charging port
My Conclusion is a Note 8 might be the best of both worlds. I just cant see spending the 400.00 for one when i have a awesome 7 inch Nexus 7 and a mind blowing Productive Galaxy note 10.1 ..
Maybe think about how you will pack it around .. Portability goes a very long way ..

I just sold my 8gb GT2 7" and I have a 16gb and 32gb N7. I wanted to like the Samsung more, as I usually enjoy their products and don't find Touchwiz as horrible as everyone says... BUT, the GT2 7" had to be the worst tablet I've ever used from a lag perspective. I don't know if it effects all sizes or just the 8gb but you cannot escape it. The stock rom is horribly slow and the various popular roms only help a bit. It reminded me of my old Android phones from 3 or 4 years ago in that you had to reboot it daily as it would slow down over time. My OG Samsung GTP7510 10" i/o tab is faster and a year older.
The N7 was had zero of these issues. Now saying that, the N7 has some cosmetic and power on issues that continually plague many people including me. But, when it's working it's a better tablet.
If you have the money buy a Note 8.0

Please help me decide between Nexus 10 and Galaxy note 8

I am having a lot of trouble deciding between these two devices, particularly because the nexus 10 is not available to try out at any physical store in my area so I'd be going on just online feedback alone. I made myself a little pro/con list. I am hoping that by seeing what I see, maybe someone can help me tip the scales in one direction or the other!
Galaxy note 8 (not considering ipad mini, i like the note better)
Pros
-I am a physician, the size is perfect for carrying around the hospital in my white coat. As a former owner of an ipad 3, carrying that around was annoying.
-Colors look bright
-S-pen. I don't use it a whole lot on my note 2 phone, but i also dont take notes on my phone. I hope to be able to use my tablet for reading pdfs, highlighting and even following along in lectures. This provides that opportunity.
Cons
-Price, very difficult pill to swallow the price for half the resolution and processing power.
-Lack of XDA support (can this tablet even be rooted? Huge concern for me if not), I'm sort of a flashaholic.
-Havent had a chance to watch an HD movie yet.. can someone comment on what I might expect to see quality wise compared to my old ipad 3 and even the nexus 10?

Pros
-Easily the most beautiful display available, I am a techie who wants the best and brightest
-Always updated by google blah blah, stock android
-Amazing developer community
Cons
-Size, I do like that tablet to fit in my whitecoat and not be cumbersome in the hospital all day
-I'd be buying blind, I have never seen a galaxy 10 tablet in person (ive seen the 7 but i know theyre very different)

Personally id go for the Nexus 7. I dont know how big your lab coat is but it can fit into a suit jacket snugly. I dont think you will see a big size difference between a Nexus 10 and a Note 8, and like you mentioned they are charging an arm and a leg for a vastly underequipped device because it is a "Note"

i thought about the nexus 7 but i found that extra inch pretty clutch for doing practice exam questions and viewing imaging. The 8" also would fit perfectly in the pocket (obviously 7" would too)

Nexus 10 On the Way
I recently purchased the $139 refurb deal on the Nexus 7 and while it's a nice tablet I found that the screen size was too small. I already have a Note 2 as my phone and found that the Nexus 7 didn't offer enough to justify using it over my Note 2. I ended up giving it to my kids to use. I next considered the Note 8 and the Nexus 10 just like you. I ultimately decided that I probably wouldn't be happy with the 8" screen size either. The reduced size Android tablets are designed mainly for vertical orientation and so make you feel like you are just using a scaled up phone, which doesn't appeal to me. I also think the Note 8 is over-priced. If Samsung made a Note 10 with a high-res display I would definitely get it, but they don't. I just can't see dropping money on a tablet that uses a 1280 resolution display. So I decided to go for the refurb deal on the Nexus 10 in the 32gb model. Like you I haven't ever seen one but like the idea of the high-res display and the Nexus brand (get updates right from Google). At $429 with free shipping I figure its worth ordering just to try out. I bought the Note 8. I also have / had the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Nexus 7, and iPad 3.
The Note 8 is for people who need to use it to write handwritten notes. None of the other tablets I've used come close to the Note 8 if that is what you need. The size is perfect for note taking. It can take the same amount and size notes on its smaller screen as the iPad can in zoomed mode. However if you do not need the note taking aspect of this tablet, you would be right to think it's over priced. I liked the Nexus 7 size better, it was just more comfortable to hold. The original Samsung 10.1 tablet is slow and the screen is not that great, but it is still my preferred device for videos, mostly because it can display them on the largest screen due to its aspect ratio. The iPad has a beautiful screen which made it a pleasure to use, and I didn't mind its weight at work, but I rarely use it at home because it's too big and heavy. The old 10.1 Android got more use, though now that I have the Note 8 it probably won't be used much any more. My recommendation would be to buy the Nexus 10 for home, and the Note 8 for work if you need it for note taking, but if you don't need the s pen, I would wait a month and see what the next Nexus 7 or 7.7 or 8 will be. It should be announced at Google IO.

my sugestion its that stay out of nexus 10 regarding its multiply issues with build quality until you are not testing the device to the blood before buying.

My opinion is get Nexus 10.We don't know how Note 8 exactly perform but Nexus 10 performs well at the moment.

Go to any tablet on XDA and you will see just as many horror stories people returning their device 6 or 7 times due to some QC problem... Some people are just never happy. There are some legit problems but a lot of what you see is from people who get their jollys off complaining about a product they bought...
The only problem the nexus 10 has that others don't is a software issue... The thermal throttling is WAY too conservative... This can be easily fixed with a custom kernel... And as this guy says he is a flashaholic a custom kernel shouldn't be a problem...
All tablets with LCD screens have light bleed issues... If they has put an Ambled screen on this bad boy it would have raised the cost and people would have complained...
The one thing I wish is that they stuck to a 1080p res screen... There really is no reason to go above that... 1080p looks AMAZING on my 42" lcd(which by the way also has huge light bleed lol) it would look awesome on my nexus 10 especially since they probable could have gone with an AMoled screen at that res for the same price

I just got the Note 8 today (attempting to making the switch from the Nexus 10). Both are great devices, but I just needed the S Pen feature work, so I went with the Note 8. It's too early to know which one I'll like better at the end.
I can tell you that I love the screen resolution on the Nexus 10. The Note 8 has no comparison when it comes to that department.

I ended up buying both tablets today since I can return either in 15 days. SO far I'm undecided, but I am bummed out that there is no root option for the note 8.
On the flipside.. the nexus 10 is already seeming like a pain in the ass to carry around. Also, whoever designed the note 8 deserves a swift kick in the nuts for making the camera stick out on the back.

I picked uo the Galaxy note 8, 2 days ago. I am using it while on the road for work while at the hotel on the network I am watching the wifi signal strength drop ever time I cover thetop right back side of the tablet with my hand. I mean just the corner of it could any of you guys that have it check. I can post a a video if needed. You can not miss it.
Another issue is the battery life, it just goes too quick. Maybe I am not giving it enough time. If all I am going to get is 5 hours on this battery. I will take this tablet back.

I don't have any wifi issue with mine. I just tried to reproduce it, but I see no change in signal strength or Internet speed regardless of how I hold it. Check at another wifi location to rule out the hotel being the problem instead. Exchange it if it still does it.
I agree the battery could be better. It gets me through a work day, but needs to be plugged in before I'm ready to put it down for the night. The iPad does do much better with battery life. I'm not sure whether my other Android tablets are better though. Possibly, but it hasn't been noticeable to me.

If a Nexus 7 should even be considered you need to at least wait until next month when official specs are released for the new model update that comes out in a few months.

Just because your single device had issues doesn't mean everyone elses does My Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 arrived just fine without any huge glaring issues (only "minor" issue my N7 had was screen lift, which was common during early models; none on the later model I bought).

If my device has problems that means that the quality control its bad . if a single device has problems it could havebeen yours , others and others . It could probably happen to you in the future also .

I want a clean product , like my money are . I need the perfect quality control from google and samsung togheder because i dont pay half money when I do .
Dont worry Ravanous ... nexus 10 has also 5 6 hours of battery. Buy note 8 or wait for ipad mini 2 if you can eat IOS.

I have a Nexus 10 but I have it on ebay at the moment and waiting to replace it with a Note 8 3G (whenever they are available here in the UK!).I love the screen on the N10 but that's about it, I find the size awkward and rarely use it as a result. I see myself getting more use out of Note 8. I always thought that 8" is the sweetspot in terms of size.

There are thousands of Nexus 10 owners on these forums, which we can see from ROM and kernel downloads. Of those, there is at best only 10% of owners who actually post here. Of those 10%, only 2-3% have problems with their tablet. 2-3% of product that has issues is on the upper end of "acceptable" for most companies these days.

Why did you get a Nexus 7?

We all know this is an amazing device, but why did you get yours? I'm sure 80% of those reading this own both a nexus 7(2013) and a smartphone released within the last 2 years.

I have the HTC ONE but wanted a tablet around the 7" size for travel.
I chose the Nexus 7 32 gb due to price, screen and size. I'm happy with my decision and it's a great companion to my phone.

I already had a 10" TF700T with a dock and I bought the 2012 N7 as an impulse buy and thought I would end up returning it. Wrong! I ended up loving the 7" form factor. I upgraded to the 2013 because I wanted a 32GB version (my 2012 is 16GB) and I have to say I like this even more than the 1st gen.

Wow... I was in the exact same situation! Ended up selling the TF700T and dock on Amazon to cover the purchase of my deb.

I've been lucky with my TF700T - I haven't run into the performance issues so many others have seen. With 64GB internal memory, plus a 64GB microSD in it, and another 64GB card in the dock it has tons of on-board memory - and then it has the USB port in the dock with enough juice to power a 1TB drive attached, making it excellent for playing ripped movies on the beautiful 10" screen. So for me, one does not replace the other, just makes for more flexible choices. But I do spend far more time on the N7 now.

You're one of the lucky ones... Mine (32GB) was riddled with I/O problems due to the slow memory... It was basically unusable. I was a bit unsure of the nexus because I felt burned by Asus on that, but I've been very happy with this product.

Cuz i got the 16gb for 140 that was used for a month!

To take camping, being smaller than my TF101. And I don't have to transcode every 720p or 1080p video from high profile H264 to baseline. And I love the screen. Don't love the lack of micro SD slot, but the meenova OTG adaptor fixes that.

I've now got 4 of them and using them to build a Home Media System (to replace an older Intercom System) - pics and details in this thread.

One particular issue is trying to replace the simple "Page" function of the old intercom. I'm currently using Skype but it does not cut the mustard, though thankfully the developer of "Android Intercom" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidintercom&hl=en seems keen to make some changes to support what I need. Just a simple way of pressing a button and turning on two way comms between the tablets so you can say "Dinner" and the Kids can say "Coming"!
Edit, the N7 is perfect for this project as it has:
- Wireless Charging (so I can mount Qi chargers behind the picture frame)
- Touch to Wake (thanks for the ElementalX Kernal)
- Playback all the media thanks to JRiver's Gizmo
- The Speakers are OK (not great but OK)
- Stable, they don't seem to crash/hang
- Good Screen
- Cheap!

For me, I wanted a 7 inch tablet to replace my 1st edition nook color, the main purpose was for reading books. I went with the nexus 7 because of the screen and price point, didn't see much point in getting something like the kindle when the N7 screen blows everything else out of the water.

I havegalaxy note (2011) and i use my note for surfing webs but the note is very laggy and it still has outdated android 4.0 (i didnt rooted it)
So i choose nexus 7 32 gb cause of better screen fast cpu etc and nexus 7 is an EPIC device. Everything is fast. the screen is awsome and i think every penny u spend on this device is worth it! And im looking forward for android 4.4 update.

1080p display was the single sufficient reason for me. Everything else is just bonus. Loving it to the core

I got it for 3 main reasons.
1. Aviation. 7 inch is perfect for a tiny airplane.
2. So I can view IP camera while I focus them.
3. It's pretty *****in.

OK so I know I probably came to the wrong thread, but my question is aimed specifically at people who use the nexus 5 and also own a nexus 7. Is the screen that much of a difference? Is it worth being a companion to my pretty big nexus 5 or should I not waste my dinero and buy a mid range tab for a bigger contrast in screen size? I was thinking lg g pad cause of the processor upgrade from the nexus 7, screen size, and storage expansion. but it is early 2014 not sure if I should wait for this years tablets to come out and make a decision.

most people here are using the original nexus 7 from 2012,you can buy one of those for around $90 on craigslist or around 110 on ebay.
i dont have a nexus 5 but i own a droid dna and the nexus 5 has a slightly bigger screen but honestly,a 7 inch tablet is way better for reading or just laying down and watching a movie compared to most phones, even the bigger ones.
if i were you ,id get the newer nexus 7 tho ,its slimmer and has better specs,but the original can be bought cheap and it will still handle pretty much anything as the specs are not too outdated yet,

N7 is awesome. Its the perfect size and imo the best bang for your buck device

I have a Note 2 phone with 5.5 inch screen. The 7 inch screen is so much better then even this monster phone.I also have a note 10.1.. I love the screen size on it.But it does not fit in my purse.
I would say yes its worth it ..But you gotta ask yourself some questions. How much money you are willing to spend. Do you need it NOW. How much storage space do you need. Do you need a network radio in it .
After you come up with the above answers if . question one is you have plenty of money and question 2 is you DO NOT have to have it this day. Wait and get the next greatest thing. a

They're exactly the same interface and software wise, except some apps are displayed in tablet mode, which is usually better but sometimes worse. Another difference is also that in landscape, the virtual buttons are portrait on the right on Nexus 5 and on Nexus 7 they are landscape on the bottom, wasting precious screen height. These virtual buttons are the only thing I hate about the Nexus 7, after removing them with apps in the Store, you gain a lot of screen space. However, Nexus 5 is 16:9, while Nexus 7 is 16:10, so the visible screen is more or less the same in the end.
I mostly use it in portrait mode because of that.
As I said, that is the only thing that bugs me about it. Otherwise, it's a great little tablet, great size for watching movies, series on the go (or in bed), it should play all games available in the Store and do all other unproductive things you can do on a tablet.
I had a 2011 Xperia Arc S before, and with it's single core CPU it quickly failed to play latest games, that's why I resorted to the Nexus 7.
Nexus 5, however, is newer, has the latest hardware and is capable of playing anything you throw at it, so getting a Nexus 7 is really only for extra screen size, but it does pay off. Maybe diagonal isn't the best measure, try screen area:
Nexus 5: 69 cm^2
Nexus 7: 142 cm^2
So the screen is actually double the size of the Nexus 5, and it's noticeably bigger when watching videos.
If you're going to mostly use it to watch videos, get the N7, if you're primarily going to surf the internet and read documents and such, I'd recommend you to check out the 8" tablets LG Pad 8.3 and Samsung 8" (tab or note), both come with buttons on the side and therefore have more vertical pixels (both 16:10).
Then there's also 2013 Nexus 7, with latest chip and 16:10 fullHD but it's quite pricier then its 2012 brother.
Why would you need a tablet for anyway? If you want it because it's popular, then forget about it. If you have other reasons, write them down, it's easier to recommend that way.

I would highly recommend the original Nexus 7 (as long as you don't need HDMI out) ts still a great tablet and works well and you can get it for a great price. I would highly recommend you DON'T get the 2013 it has known defects with the screen (do some research).

It works great for me, it is highly customizable, gets latest android,price is great for the 2012 model.

I own both, Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2012). Have to say that N5 screen is awesome, but still N7 screen is nice and totally usable and it's so cheap, that you can later easily change to some other device if you want.
One good thing is that, the Nexus 7 is still supported by Google so you get official updates at least some time. When Google drop support, then you can always use custom roms.
Personally I buy only Nexus devices, because they get always best support from Google and maybe best community support.

I don't play much games, but on normal usage stock 4.4.2 is working smoothly without any noticeable lag. And yes, you can't compare speed to N5, but old N7 is not bad at all if we compare example to N4.
Do you have some free example game(s) what you mean? I can test and let you know is it working smoothly or not... Maybe this info is useful to @BNNEBULA too.
