Exchange My Nexus 7 for EEE Pad Transformer TF101- Is it worth?

Hey Guys,
I need some help here. So basically i have the all new Google Nexus 7 tablet which has just launched. So I am getting an offer to exchange my Nexus 7 for an ASUS EEE Pad Transformer TF101. I was considering switching but was not able to make the descsion, so i need help from you guys on whether switching/exchanging a Nexus 7 for a TF101 Transformer Is worth it? The Transformer has a Dual Core Tegra 2 while as the Nexus 7 has a Quad core Tegra 3. Other than that the Transformer seems better. It has a larger screen with slightly lower PPI, it has a 5 MP camer + front facing one too. It has 16GB internal + expandable storage(not sure if expandable). Build quality and battery life seems equal on both. So i want to know if the Tegra 2 is well performing on the TF101 and whether it can handle the latest games/apps and whether the TF101 lags?

The Asus Transformer is also worth taking a look coz its is bundled with features....
But finally it depends upon you that what are your needs as If you want to use it for hardcore gaming then obv. Transformer is the one to go with but if you want a pure Google experience and are GOOGLE FAN then you should stay with the Nexus 7 as it has the latest and coolest features....but in the end u r the 1 who has to make the decission as per ur needs... Even running at stock speed, my TF runs all the games I've played smoothly. ....But there are some newer games optimized for Tegra 3. BTW, I have both the TF and Nexus 7, and they're both awesome in their own way.

If it is new or a refurb and not coming from a private/owner seller, I say go for it. You can always buy another Nexus 7 when the price drops. If it is the owner, then maybe you could work out a temporary/trade/try it. If pre-owned does it have any problems. Maybe nothing is wrong and they are just feeling the urge ( you know, that desire for the latest toy). I have noticed that the price for the TF101 has gone up since I bought mine 7 months ago. I will probably buy the N7, due to the urge. But I had better wait for cooler weather. Just paid an electric bill that was over $300
after using a 7', the 10.01" will seem huge in comparison. I have the keyboard dock, it's cool, with the extra battery, USB & SD slot. But I rarely use it, the soft key pad is great.

Actually you should keep the Nexus coz it is new and latest tech by the Android Owner/Developer, so it is a must have tab fr Android geeks as Google has worked hard for putting all those features in such a low rate....and the second reason is that Transformer has become a bit old and isnt the latest technology although it is a good competetor but it is like an old Grand Father with less usability.
....also you will in Starting love the keyboard along but after some time you will see no use of the keyboard....also the keyboard dock after some time becom lose and while carrying both connected it slips(nt personal experience of dock)....well indeed make a good choice which suits you the best....

Even though the n7 is a Google device I will probably never buy any tablet smaller than the 10 inch. Same reason I will never buy a phone bigger than 5 inch. Just my two cents.

It depends on your usage model. I have both the TF and N7, and ever since I got the N7 my TF has mostly stayed turned off. However, I don't plan to get rid of the TF either. I mainly use my tablets for browsing and watching downloaded videos. Browsing on the N7 is smooth and buttery, while on the TF it is reasonably quick but the occasional stutter happens more often and is therefore more irritating. The UI on the TF isn't as smooth, but in my experience apps work flawlessly. Videos, on the other hand, look better on the TF. It's not just the screen size, but the contrast seems better as well. The N7 is also easier to hold/handle due to it's small size.
Let me put it this way, if you primarily browse the web or stream most of your content (or love having the latest and greatest OS), stick with the N7. If you need lots of local storage (or are stuck with slow DSL), want to output content to a TV (I use mine to play emulator games with my PS3 controller), or want the optional convenience of the keyboard and the epic battery life that gives you, trade for the TF.

I would go ahead and probably swap a nexus 7 for an OG transformer.
Simple reason being...SD card support. They both got great screens but transformer is bigger at 10.1 inch. The difference between quad and dual core doesn't really bother me at this point in time. Both got 1 gig of ram also.
You can't really go wrong. I love my transformer still after almost a year. I've no intention of replacing it anytime soon.

I've got both and personally i would stick with the nexus. i really want to love the TF101, the keyboard hybrid is such a great idea but it's been a really frustrating experience - very often laggy as hell (press the recent apps key and wait 5 secs for it to respond!), too many bugs for a device that is now over a year old (crashed launcher, screen locking up, i still occasionally have the device randomly rebooting). the speakers and microphone are also awful, really poor quality.
The nexus really is the best android tablet on the market at the moment in terms of performance. but if screen size/storage space is important then maybe it's worth swapping - but i would consider another android tablet.

well the OG transformer has HDMi out while the nexus 7 doesnt

man, i'll gladly go with a Nexus 7 over my Transformer+dock.
i would rather want the smaller form factor. taking around the Transformer+dock just seems too much like a laptop to me, and without the laptop power.

It's pretty much perfect with the exception of expandable storage... But nothing a flash drive and otg cable can't fix

Wich version you have? 8gb or 16gb?
I would buy the 16gb, isn't it enough storage?

I'm using 16 gig version. Plenty of storage for me. If you do run out though, you can always use cloud storage or go order that otg cable and flash stick.
Anyway, so far I have found almost nothing that I don't love about this tablet.

I have a 16gb, I have a about 8GB of free space left. But I have a very large video collection so 16gb is hardly enough.

+ It's Nexus, plain Android, faster updates.

- Somewhat washed out colors.
- Location of power button right next to volume buttons.
- Two months later and I still haven't gotten a Nexus 7 without raised glass on the left side.
- 16GB should have been the base model, needed a 32GB option for $250. My 16GB is out of space.
- No HDMI output.

First tablet, so not much to compare it to in that sense, but I love it. I originally wanted an ereader, but decided for another $150 I couldn't pass up the extra functionality. In the end, a back lit screen was better for me as an ereader anyway. Now I don't have to have a light on to disturb Mrs_Biggles when I can't sleep. It makes an excellent reader. I use the Moon+ reader app. Text is crisp, lots of options for background colour and so on.
Other than reading, I mostly like that it is fast. Videos and games are great on it. I also like that it is small. I find a 10" tablet too big to hold in one hand comfortably. Some say it would be better with a rear camera. To each his own, but I can't say I miss it really. That's partly why I have a phone if I happen to be without my camera. I think people look a little odd holding tablets up to take pictures. I don't miss a data connection at all as I am too cheap to get a data plan.
My only beef would be that at 16GB it's still easy to run out of space when I load it up with videos to take somewhere for the weekend. However as many point out that's easily solved with OTG USB.
Best bang for your buck out there I think, and great community support.

I like pretty much everything except for the lag spikes. The freezing spells this goes through reminds me of items in my list that were greatly inferior to this device spec wise. Since the issues really seem software based, I'm hoping big G fixes it soon...otherwise its goodbye N7. I would rather deal with another product that doesn't have these lag issues even if it means giving up Jelly Bean.

If it had expandable storage and rear camera it would be perfect. I like it better than my ten inch one. It's easier to type on I think than the bigger ones. The only other complaint is colors seem washed out compared to my gnex.

Storage is the only real pain. Basically: music, movies, or games, pick 2. (In the case of the 8GB tablet, pick 1.) Obviously they're trying to push their cloud services.
Also hate the backlight, but that's because I'm anal about the black levels (unfortunately, there are only two amoled tablets out atm, and both are severely disadvantaged for their price).

About the washed colors, franco kernel and his app on the nexus 7 can't fix it?
btw, Nexus 7 is taking time to come to Portugal, nobody knows when google will get nexus 7 in Portugal?

For the money it exceeds my expectations. I absolutely love this tablet. I would have paid more though for additional storage space. But at this price there is nothing wrong.

I'm considering selling my iPad and getting this, but my only concern is the lack of good apps made for android tablets. Giving up the retina display for what many say has a somewhat washed out screen would be tough but doable if there were a good amount of tablet-specific apps for android.

Yeah apple does have a very large selection of apps not to mention they have a lot of good games, but I think the play store has gotten a lot better with their selection. There's a lot of games that I have from the play store and I am very satisfied they're always expanding their store too.
Yeah going from a retina display is disappointing but the Nexus 7 screen is still very nice and I only see the washed out colors when I compare them to a nicer display, but even then I only notice a slight difference granted I am color blind lol. I would deff recommend it if u are looking for an android tablet that and it offers a really affordable price not to mention all the goodies you'll get along with it

Just asking, who will upgrade to nexus 10. I will just because my mom agreed to buy it as my present.
My concern is.
- big resolution, will there be any apps compatibility issue?
- bigger screen. Harder to hold and heavier.

I'd consider trading my N7 for one, but I don't think it'll happen. I don't think anyone would pay "much" for a 8GB model. And I don't have the money to just buy a N10 :/

Can't wait already...selling my Asus transformer any day now. I tried a friends nexus 7 at work last week and I was sold.
Love the 7 inch form factor. Just the portability of the device is what got me.
The nexus 10 looks awesome...especially with that display resolution and the cortex a15 dual exynos. However, I think the 7 inch form factor is the one for me for now.

Yes - I plan to do exactly that - provided the build quality is good, and once the teething issues around supply etc are dealt with.

I'm migrating to a 32gb N10.

Thinking about passing down the 7 to another family member and grabbing a 10. I think I will have to wait a while for the pricing to make sense though.

That's the annoying old school Apple pricing there. Annoying, everyone in the world knows that that memory costs $5. Was happy with the new pricing thresholds for the Nexus 7, I assume the 10 will follow suit eventually. Probably when competitors get closer in specs.

Fun to say but the ipad mini format would have been the best of both world.

You do realise the Nexus 10 is the lightest and thinnest 10" tablet on the market. It also runs android (obviously ) which works with most screen resolution. I'm sure Google thought it through with 4.2.

Exactly the same feeling, I bought 16GB, would definitely wait for the 32GB + 3G if I knew. I have 10" eeePad Transformer, Nexus 7 is just big enough and much more comfortable to use.
It would be better if they would put this Hi-res displays to notebooks instead of tablets :laugh:

The 7 has been an awesome road warrior. Works great as a stand along GPS on the road minus the polarized effect but I just use it as a gps in portrait mode.
hmmm..i do have a galaxy 10.1 that needs replacing but I honestly wanted to make my 10" something along the lines of a windows 8 pro tablet/hybrid but damn those things will be double the price of a nexus 10 for the i5 models. =(

I'm tempted by a 10, not to replace my 7 but my iPad 2. Think I can probably sell my iPad for a reasonable amount on eBay.

It is not exactly as you think.. Google is bearing a loss with 16gb version, not making profit. So extra 100 dollars cost is not actually for memory upgrade. Its stepping up from loss to profit.. Same applies for Nexus4 also..

yes that's what come to my mind.
basically my "gadget lover" instinct tell me to get nexus 10. But then i'm in the middle of choosing in-between because I feel that 2 tablet is useless. I try to ask myself "what is your need?" , but I realise that, it's not about need, it's about "lust". Nexus 7 is really awesome for portability, i bring it everywhere but Nexus 10 has 2500x1600 resolution, front speaker, gorilla glass 2, 9000mAH battery, and NEW. And if i do get N10, i rather sell my 16gb N7 for 200$ (comes with screen protector and 2 smart case) so i could buy accessories for N10 or add another 185$ to buy nexus 4.. So now i'm in doubt, if i don't get N10 when it released, i won't be able to get it at all since this is supposed to be my b'day present.

USB comes from an OTG cable (microUSB > Full USB). Search Amazon for them.
I'm good with a 7". I had my Asus Transformer 10" and I loved it but it was just a little too big. I wanted to upgrade to a Tegra3 but didn't see it worthwhile just replacing it with another 10" tablet (Asus TF300). I bought my son a used Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" and I LOVED the size. Fortunately I held out and found the N7. It had all the great features (minus HDMI )I wanted but in a 7" form factor. Plus a price point that was great. I sold my Transformer for $225 and picked up a N7.
Most users here HAD a 10" and downsized to a 7" because we preferred the smaller size.

I've only had mine for a week. So far I love it. Can't say its the best since I haven't played around with many others. I'd like to take the Nexus 10 for a test drive. Still, for the money, I can't think of anything better. What do you guys think?

I've had mine since August. It's my fifth tablet and by far my favorite.

Five!? Wow. What were the others and what makes this one so much better if I may ask?

I have a viewsonic g-tablet, and a transformer prime. They collect dust since I got the nexus7.
It's mainly size that makes it much more useable then those 10" tablets. Take it with me everywhere, its better for gaming also due to the size.
For the hardware and price, it really can't be beat.
I started with a 16gb on pre-order. Then they announced the 32gb. So I bought myself one of those. The girlfriend is getting my old 16gb, and I picked up another 32gb for my mom for the holidays for 229.
Really can't go wrong.

May I ask where you got the 32 for 229$

I had a Acer a500 10" tablet before my nexus 7. I'd have to charge it about once a week, maybe not even that. My nexus 7, I have to charge about every 2 days. Noo, this isn't about battery life. Its that I can't put my nexus 7 down! I can't believe how enjoyable this device is to use. I thought I was taking a step backwards with going to a smaller screen. I was wrong. I love my nexus 7 and I use this thing everyday. Its amazing and for $200, you can't beat it. My gf loves my nexus 7 and always wants to use it. In fact she wanted jewelry for Christmas but now she wants a nexus 7 lol

I actually got it from Adorama but it was a cyber monday thing on ebay.. But I've seen a few people in the whos is shipping thread stickied at the top getting similar prices since.
At that price, it was a great deal. I totalled up the 16gb from the play store, with tax and shipping it would have come to 230 something. And I got the 32gb for 229 with no tax and free shipping.

Had an I pad 1 and a Kindle Fire and by far this thing is my favorite tablet to date. Just works!

Best 7" Tablet and probably best tablet for the price.
If you want a larger tablet, then obviously there are probably better choices out there, but they cost more $$.

After watching Cnet top 10 gifts this year. I can see why the Nexus 7 made it to the #1 spot this year.
In the area where I'm living you won't find the Nexus 7 16GB model anywhere within a 50 mile range in any stores. Cause they are flying out of the door faster then they can get them. The stores in my area still had like four 32GB model of the Nexus 7 still. Least that what they had when I called them asking how many they had. That was three days ago when I bought my Nexus 7.

Nook Color, Nook Tablet, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Asus TF300 and Nexus 7.
The Nooks were crippled with old versions of Android and had to be hacked to be made useful. The Galaxy Tab had Touchwiz over Android and Samsung was slow with updates. The Asus has terrible I/O issues that cause the tablet to be very slow when any I/O is being done. After having both 7 and 10 inch tablets I find for me 7 is the sweet spot and the Nexus has been my favorite.....so far.

Maybe not the best in sheer performance, but I would definitely say the best overall when it comes to value quality and performance as a package. And its a nexus, after getting my gnex in July I don't think I'll ever get another non-nexus android device.
On another note, when I decided to get one (I buy everything in 32gb where possible) most stores were out of stock, I bought the last one office depot had in.

Lame how CNET had to include the rubbish ipad mini as a runner up. Perhaps apple paid to get it I think there.

Poor battery life? Not my experience at all. of course, I've only had it for a little over a week. Still, I've used the heck out of this little device and haven't felt the need to run to the charger. Two days is my requirement. If it can last me two days with heavy use then battery life will never be an issue. The Nexus 7 does this and more. Also, maybe I have very clear vision, but I think seeing web sites in full desktop view is fine on the Nexus 7. I always hit the "request full desktop option under chrome when browsing.
But it still nice to get someone's opinion who favors other devices. IMHO, the lack of a true HD screen, the wider and taller form factor (yes it is noticeable after holding the two devices in your hand), having to look at the same static stale home screen all the time, puts the iPad Mini near the bottom spot for me. Frankly, even if the Nexus 7 was priced the same at $329, I still think it is the better buy.

The lack of the TV output is most certainly a valid point, but I really don't know of anyone that uses that on a tablet. I have it on my Acer Iconia A100 and I have the HDMI cable and I used it once just to check it out. Not really that important with very few use cases.
The full screen web experience thing is a little confusing. You get the full desktop versions of the sites if desired. Web browsing is very snappy due to the quad core processor and 1GB of ram.
The iPad mini does have the upper hand on the battery life though, but it is by 2 hours. The iPad gets 12 hours while the Nexus 7 gets 10. I don't think I have ever used a tablet for 10 hours in a single day.

Battery life is excellent and TV out is ...
If this thing had airplay and was glued together properly it would be perfect.

Hello nexus 7 users.Happy new year!..i want to buy a tablet for a gift to my cousin and i want you to tell me if it is worth buying?is 7" screen too small?will she like it with so small screen? i mean my cousin wants it to watch movies to surf the net and play some games
i have only 250 e to spend and i have to choose between nexus 7,and one vero that it is dualcore 1.5 ghz cortex a9,1gb of ran and 9.7 inch....
can you advise me? thank you verry much!
also the vero does not have google play

If you only have 250 to spend then there is no question. Other tablets at that price have aged software, bad screens, slow CPU-s etc.

Hi. I've been using the N7 (32 TV WiFi only) for almost 2 months. The first time saw it in a shop, I thought the screen is kinda small. But after trying it out for quite awhile, I find that it's just about right. Watching videos, browsing the internet or playing games is not a problem in terms of screen size. The 'neutral colors' of the screen is not an issue for me. I'm happy with the performance of the N7. I'm sure your cousin will like it. And holding the N7 with one hand is not that unwieldy. HATH.

Nexus 7, iPad Mini, Kindle Fire. Pick your poison.

I frankly think that 7" is a sweet spot for tablets: easy and comfortable to hold with one hand and large enough to watch movies. The iPad mini at 8" is already uncomfortable to use with one hand, for example.
The N7 has excellent audio output, incidentally.
Last but not least, as someone else already pointed out, there is nothing comparable at this price level.

Just ordered this one for $229 shipped. Couldn't pass it up especially since the TAB 2 screen is really washed out compared to my Note 2 and I cannot access media off the 64GB SD card except through file explorers. Media apps did not like ExFat or Fat32. Kind of disappointed with the Tab 2. After I get the Nexus I will play with both and see which will be the keeper.

7" is what I would call the best screen size for a tablet - I've gone through an original iPad and a slightly smaller Archos tablet and the nexus 7 really is the right size and shape for everything I use it for, its made the full size iPad feel unwieldy to me.
And as for going into a shop and playing about with one, just before Christmas I was in Comet (UK) with a friend and I had a quick play about with the shop floor one and it'd be loaded up with so many active widgets it was like a slideshow, so I'm not sure that's the best example

This seven is my first android tablet, and I'm actually loving it much more than I initially thought I would.
The size of this tablet is just the right size, really comfortable to hold even with just one hand and the things I could do with it (reading books, occasional gaming, browsing the web and whatnot) brings no regret whatsoever

Nexus 7 is great you will not regret it, a 10 incher might seem better but bigger is not always better when you are holding it in your hand for long periods of time and there is no other tablet out there that can match the price point and power of the nexus 7 I recommend mine to every one

Agreed. Bought the wife a TAB 10.1 and that thing is a beast. Great for her as she uses it to replace her sheet music on gigs. At $229 to my door I couldn't pass up giving it few rounds vs the TAB 2 7 P3100.

I too was worried about this and I'm not price sensitive. After three weeks with the nexus 7, I can say I am glad I chose this over the larger one. In bed or the sofa this is a lot easier to us.
