[Q] Automated Way Of Removing All The Obnoxious Bloatware? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any automated methods (preferably without root access required) to remove the tons and tons of bloatware on my Verizon branded Note 3? I would prefer to remove the applications all together is possible, not just disable them.

You have to be rooted to remove bloatware, there is no way around it. I've removed a total of 100 apps and have not have a single issue.

If you choose to root your device, there are a bunch of apps but I personally use Rom Toolbox. Most popular is probably Titanium Backup

He wants to remove them, not just disable them, so he has to be rooted.
I freeze apps with TiBu for a few hours and then start completely removing them.

Your best bet is to use Titanium Backup to freeze the apps and then delete them after you see your not having issues. You can also use Root Explorer or a similar app to go into the system/app folder and rename the apps with a .bak at the end so that they will still be there if you need them in the future or you can just delete them.
Here is my list of 100 apps that I have completely removed with Titanium Backup:

Got it. I cleared a lot on the list. Two questions:
1) How can I remove folders in the Apps window?
2) What is the VZW Mobile Hotspot app called so I can remove it?
3) On the homepage, can I move the Apps button on the far to the middle between my buttons? (this is an unrelated question but figured I would ask).

1. I'm not sure what you mean.
2. The Hotspot app is part of settings and can't be removed. (It works fine and is free, just hit home when the prompt comes up asking you to call for the service)
3. Yes, just long press on the app drawer icon and then move it to where you'd like it.

1) I found the answer through https://community.sprint.com/baw/message/658040
2) OK. I figured it was some BS Verizon would make you pay out the nose for when Google offers a free app for mobile hotspots.
3) I've tried long pressing on it but it never moves. I looked through all the settings to see if it's locked somehow, but I couldn't find anything. I can move my other apps around just fine.

I had an issue with Gallery but clearing the data and rebooting seemed to fix it. I should be all set for now. You rock, sir! Thank you for the timely responses, it's much appreciated.

Anyone have the APK? I wanna push it to system/app. It won't install from the market for me (and I've already removed the old one, but not the launcher as instructed elsewhere).
Yeah, it's actually useful now! It's basically a big simplified configurable launcher now, which is good for car use, although I still don't get why they desaturate the icons, makes them hard to see. That's exactly what you don't want driving!
Anywho, so you can move icons around, add shortcuts, etc... And when you hit the home button it returns back to Car Home.. so makes it easy for me to put Waze, Gasbuddy, GeOrg etc all in the same place without poking through the launcher to do it.
We'll see how the "auto run on bluetooth" thing works I suppose, but there's that feature. So far I don't see my phone automatically connect to my BT GPS so not sure it'll automatically do anything here, but we'll see. None the less, seems like it might be useful now, wasn't before IMO.
This happens on my Nexus One with Android 2.2.1 stock (FRG83) when I use the QR code from the post above: I get a dialog telling me: "Not found: The requested item could not be found".
When I search on the market with the phrase "car home", I don't see any application from Google.
I'm located in Germany, maybe that is a problem?
To get it to install correctly on CM6...
Uninstall the Google Car Home app via Titanium Backup (I had 2 in Titanium Backup and uninstalled both)
Reboot
Install from Market
Open the Gapps zip file (mine was in /sdcard/clockworkmod/download/mirror.kanged.net/gapps/gapps-hdpi-20100817-signed.zip) with Root Explorer (or similar) and extract the CarHomeLauncher.apk
Install CarHomeLauncher.apk from wherever you extracted it (mine was /sdcard/extracted/)
Enjoy!!!
if you have the google dock you dont need to add the launcher back into it
this is a very nice update. 4 screens to create shortcuts and i think it fixed a problem i was running into with using voice search, i had to speak very loudly when it was docked in the google car dock. it didnt seem like it would pick up my voice very well and now it does. i like how now when its docked it gives you the option when you "exit car dock" it lets you switch back to it from the notification bar. also love being able to access the android menu from the settings now. used to have to close out of the car home completely before.
Thx for the info. It works now. How about street view. I uninstalled it using titanium cuz when I tried downloading from the market it would fail at installation.
Your help is greatly appreciate.

Um, so I take some of it back.. the Automatic screen mode is no more than the current Auto screen, I was hoping it would be um... More for car?? Based on assumed sunlight, not the ambient sensor. So I still have to adjust the brightness in Tasker for navigation.
And the subued icons are just suck, they blend into the background too much.

[Q] How to restore Samsung Program Monitor Widget in Bonsai 3.0.0 ROM?

2 questions really:
1) How can I restore the Program Monitor widget? I've tried copying the .apk into /system/app from a couple of zips (eb13 stock deodexed, midNIGHT's removed apps) and then rebooting. It never shows up in the list of widgets to add.
2) Why was it removed? If there's a good reason, I'll sure miss it but will learn to live without it.
Thanks!

it was removed because it is considered "bloatware" ie, an unwanted stock application (i'm assuming). You can always download something from the market that is comparable, like the process monitor widget.
If you want the samsung program monitor you will need to be running TouchWiz or TouchWiz GTG. The widget will not work when using any other launcher.
To use it, just copy the SamsungWidget_ProgramMonitor.apk into the /system/app directory. Once you are running a TW launcher, it will appear in the widget list (even though the Samsung Widgets list will be gone, it will show in the regular widget list)

That's exactly what I was doing. Maybe it's an odex/deodex ish with the apk I have? How can I tell whether the apk is deodexed? (I'm assuming it needs to be for Bonsai?)
Go to the thread for the rom you are running and it should say there if it is odex or not.
As far as the effect it has, couldn't tell you that; I have always switched to GTG then moved the apk over and that's all it has ever required, though I only ran roms on DK28. EB13 shouldn't be any different though.
As far as the program monitor hold down on the home button and when the box showing your last six apps opened click on task.manager at the.bottom of it.

Thanks all for your help. I'm guessing that Bonsai 3.0.0 is de-odexed since a 2.5.x thread said that version was. I've tried both the EB13-stock-deodex-signed and v2.0.1_AppsRemoved zips (midNIGHT's) to no avail. Could there be a pre-req I'm missing?
Let me take one moment to give much props to the devs behind the Bonsai 3.0.0 ROM. They've got lightning in a bottle with this one. IMHO their ROM stands head and shoulders above the rest because installing their ROM will does not require a data wipe!. Seriously, I stayed stock because it took a lot of time to get to where I was really happy with my apps and settings and I didn't want to have to start over. You don't have to with Bonsai. Incredibly fast and stable. Hats off.
Use the sdx stock app removal app. Copy the program monitor app on your sd card in folder sdx/backup. Then open sdx app then go to manage back ups then scroll down and highlight samsung program monitor and press restore. Then it should be there if not re boot phone 1x and it will be there. I do it all the time with this same app and mms app. I hate the bubble messaging. Soooo gayyyy

Thanks for the SDX Removal app idea. It didn't work at the time but I've since updated to Bonsai 3.0.1 and SDX Removal hooked me right up.
This stupid little Program Monitor app probably uses a lot of battery but I don't care, cuz itsaves more than it burns. When it turns red I know something somewhere's using cpu so I fire up OS Monitor and kill that sucker.
Lol I flashed this rom and sdx app wouldn't restore program monitor for me I had to get a .zip of program monitor and flash it in cwm but I'm glad sdx worked for you.

How to stop an app from updating?

I don't want the pulse news app to update because of its ui change which I didn't like. So I want to keep using the older version 3.2 , I have a titanium backup of that version. I have the auto update enabled for apps in the play store settings but disabled for the pulse but sometimes it still updates and I have to restore the backup. I'm looking for a way to remove the pulse app from showing up in the installed app list in the play store , I tried detaching the app from play store using titanium backup but it still comes back after a day or two. Is there any other way to stop the app from showing up in the play store - my appp - installed apps and never update in the future?

Well, my response is first and foremost. Don't fight change.. If developers change the UI. They do so with a reason.
Now as a possible solution for your "problem", have you tried removing it in the playstore and then just installing the apk you backed up. Not through titanium backup, but through a filemanager. And then use titanium backup to remove a playstore link.

Well , the app went from useful to useless so I really don't have much choice. I have tried the method you suggested before but initially the app won't be seen in the play store but after two or three days it used to come back and sometimes update itself as I have auto update enabled for the apps. I was thinking of doing some minor modification that would make it impossible for the play store to find and link it to the app in the play store but I only have the thought, don't know any ways to do it.
I had the same initial reaction tot he update. Large tiles for stories, white back ground making the text almost unreadable. I found that in the settings you can reduce the tile size and the text and use a dark theme which made it usable again. Just a though if all else fails.
Disable auto-update in PlayStore settings.
Note: It will enable auto-update every time PlayStore is reinstalled

Hackergnome is spot on. From the pick it looks like all you need to do is ignore it. Update apps one at a time. At the moment they are all being updated for kitkat and ART. Some are buggy after and its taking multiple updates to sort them out. You probably will need to update at some time when dalvic goes. By then they will be sorted out.

That's an option but then I will have to update all other apps individually. Now when I have the auto update in play store enabled and auto update for pulse news disabled , only problem is that the pulse news keeps showing that update in the play store and sometimes shows a notification in the notification bar. The pulse won't update when I press the update all when there are other updates instead it shows a warning that the auto update for pulse is off and if I want to update it or not.So the approach is quite functional.

That's true, it's just an annoyance that I have to deal with but I thought titanium backup will be able to solve it with the detach the link from market option but from my experience it's not that useful at this moment, it detached the app but I think play store finds that within a day or two and fixes it and I will find that out when i see an update for pulse news. Then I have to restore the old backup and continue with that annoyance.

I found this app called appguard by srt , it is mostly used to monitor the activities of an app and to find if it's using any unnecessary permissions , and it provides option to disable the permissions, more like the app ops but one little feature it has is that when you put an app to be monitored , it will be detached from the play store and future updates are shown inside the appguard. So I just added the pulse to be monitored and now my problems are solved but not that happy that I had to install an another app to take care of such a small thing. I'm thinking of finding a way to change the signature of the app or make some modification so that play store can't link it to its original app in the play store.
If I don't want to update any one of the apps, what I do is, I run update all, and cancel the update download for that app.

Guide to disable Google play services "internal" services.

Bringing my experiences from G3 to Nexus 6.
With the mods to Google play services on my G3 I was able to increase my battery longevity by a significant amount. This thread is to guide and discuss as to which "services" could be disabled inside the Google play services app using "3Ctoolbox". Disabling certain services prevents Ggoogle play service from running in the background, thus, saving battery.
As a reminder, some of the services can still run after disabling them and even cause a large amount of wakelocks. To solve this, please disable the corresponding tasks in Activities, Providers, and Receivers. For example: disabling update.SystemUpdateService in the Services tab will not disable the service completely, so you must navigate to Receivers tab and disable everything that is related to it there.
Lastly, think ahead while disabling services. If you play games and use "games" app to sync them, then you should not disable anything that deals with games. Same applies to other services.
Update 5/30/15: Google play services version 7.5... here is the list of what services can be safely disabled. Perform at your own risk. I am not responsible for any damages.

If you're going to create a thread to discuss what changes can be made that are helpful and not harmful and have made such changes, would you mind discussing the changes you made in the thread you made for that purpose?
It's not quite a disabling of a service but all I've done with play services is disable location, keep awake, and wake up through app ops. No downsides that I've noticed yet.

well, if you are a ok google user, then there are downsides. if you disable location services, you wont get any info like "traffic home" or "traffic to work"(for example). if you dont use ok google, then disabling locations wont affect you to much.

The services that I have disabled are such things as ads, report services, and wearable services. There are other also, but I want to wait a few days before posting the final list so that other users don't have issues.

I didn't notice any. It could help by lowering the amount of RAM that is being used, but i think this would be in very extreme cases where all the RAM is used. With the way the phone is made, it has more than enough performance in stock form. Disabling services is primarily for battery longevity.

This wake lock is not on any of my lists. Looking at your signature, you are modding your lg g3. I'm pretty sure I had a similar post in the lg g3 forums when I had that phone.

You need full root. Download the app suggested in the first post. Scroll left once you open it, find "application manager", make sure at the bottom it says" system", click on the "apps" on the top bar, scroll to Google play service and click open then details, next scroll right and select services from the top bar.
After doing that, GPS and location stopped working. It cannot stablish my location. Even after enabling all Location services, it still not working.
Restart the phone. None of the things that are disabled in my list will affect the GPS
I have somehow disabled my gmail from notifying me once I have received a new email. I can sync it manually. I just don't get notifications for my gmail like I used to. Does anyone know what I need to reenable through the suggested app in the op? Thanks

Google Now on Kindle Fire (5.3.2.1)

Did I not see many posts about not being able to use Google Now on a non-rooted Fire? Then what's this? Why was I able to see it in Launcher Hijack just fine?

I don't know? It works for me... kinda
Just odds I guess, but did you really have to start a new thread about it?

Did you happen to 'uninstall' Fire Launcher? If so, what method did you use? If you 'uninstall' it, you can use just about any launcher you want. Hijacker works with some launchers, and some it does not. 50/50 chance. It does happen to work rather well with Google Now Launcher.

I actually used a method in a thread on the forum about disabling the fire launcher without root. I'm not using Launcher hijack for it at the moment. If I remove all the items from the "recent" screen, unfortunately it shows fire Launcher. Anything else though, pressing the home button immediately goes to Google Now, without any delay. How would one uninstall it without root? Can it be done just like uninstalling the Amazon apps?
EDIT: After some investigation it seems it WAS Launcher hijack doing it. I assumed it wasn't since I hadn't enabled the accessibility service.

See this post. Be warned though: the recent apps button (square button) has a fit when you uninstall Fire Launcher. You get kicked to lock screen when you swipe all your apps away. So you need to enable widgets. That will also allow shortcuts to be created.
To fix that recent apps button:
1) Download and install Activity Launcher
2) Open Activity Launcher, tap top left and select All Activities.
3) Scroll to System UI and tap it. Long press 'App Switcher' and create a shortcut. Place it as close to the recent apps (the square button) as possible. When you want to swipe close your apps, use that shortcut and you avoid the kick to lock screen. If you just uninstall Fire Launcher without downgrading it, you will break the home button and get parental warnings all over.

*sigh* I mourn until the day this can be rooted so I can flash Fire Nexus on to it.

I wish I could go back in time. Before I knew that 5.3.2.1+ would cause these problems, the day I first got it, it was on an older OS. Not sure which one, but it doesn't matter, it could have been rooted. The next day when I woke up I saw it had updated, but I didn't think much of it. Until I learned that I had made such a big mistake.
