I have it installed on CM6.
Just have to remove the existing copy first...
(I used Root Explorer, and added .bak to the existing filename, so I could restore easily).
Reboot in between removing the old copy, and installing the new...

i am getting frequent force closes. anyone else experiencing it?

Anyone have the APK? I wanna push it to system/app. It won't install from the market for me (and I've already removed the old one, but not the launcher as instructed elsewhere).

Yeah, it's actually useful now! It's basically a big simplified configurable launcher now, which is good for car use, although I still don't get why they desaturate the icons, makes them hard to see. That's exactly what you don't want driving!
Anywho, so you can move icons around, add shortcuts, etc... And when you hit the home button it returns back to Car Home.. so makes it easy for me to put Waze, Gasbuddy, GeOrg etc all in the same place without poking through the launcher to do it.
We'll see how the "auto run on bluetooth" thing works I suppose, but there's that feature. So far I don't see my phone automatically connect to my BT GPS so not sure it'll automatically do anything here, but we'll see. None the less, seems like it might be useful now, wasn't before IMO.

This happens on my Nexus One with Android 2.2.1 stock (FRG83) when I use the QR code from the post above: I get a dialog telling me: "Not found: The requested item could not be found".
When I search on the market with the phrase "car home", I don't see any application from Google.
I'm located in Germany, maybe that is a problem?

To get it to install correctly on CM6...
Uninstall the Google Car Home app via Titanium Backup (I had 2 in Titanium Backup and uninstalled both)
Reboot
Install from Market
Open the Gapps zip file (mine was in /sdcard/clockworkmod/download/mirror.kanged.net/gapps/gapps-hdpi-20100817-signed.zip) with Root Explorer (or similar) and extract the CarHomeLauncher.apk
Install CarHomeLauncher.apk from wherever you extracted it (mine was /sdcard/extracted/)
Enjoy!!!

if you have the google dock you dont need to add the launcher back into it
this is a very nice update. 4 screens to create shortcuts and i think it fixed a problem i was running into with using voice search, i had to speak very loudly when it was docked in the google car dock. it didnt seem like it would pick up my voice very well and now it does. i like how now when its docked it gives you the option when you "exit car dock" it lets you switch back to it from the notification bar. also love being able to access the android menu from the settings now. used to have to close out of the car home completely before.

Thx for the info. It works now. How about street view. I uninstalled it using titanium cuz when I tried downloading from the market it would fail at installation.
Your help is greatly appreciate.

Um, so I take some of it back.. the Automatic screen mode is no more than the current Auto screen, I was hoping it would be um... More for car?? Based on assumed sunlight, not the ambient sensor. So I still have to adjust the brightness in Tasker for navigation.
And the subued icons are just suck, they blend into the background too much.

Wildfire not vibrating when recieving SMS

Hey, I am getting so annoyed by this, and was praying someone could help lol.
My HTC Wildfire is not vibrating when recieving SMS's. I have checked and double checked the usual sms settings, which all show that it is meant to be on.
I have looked around the forums and have found this to be a re-occuring issue, the solution being to download an app called 'Sound manager'. However, I have looked on the android market place and just cannot find it...
If anyone can help me with this I will gladly have their baby's
Hangover
Hello Hangover,
I had exactly the same problem!!
To make it possible to find and install sound manager (plus all other apps that do not appear on the market on our QVGA Wildfire) do the following:
- Install the applications 'Appbrain' and 'Fast Web Installer' on your Phone.
- Go to appbrain.com on your pc and create your account
- Synchronise your Phone and the appbrain account with the Appbrain application on the phone
- Search for Sound Manager on the appbrain website and click install
- This will push the application directly to your phone without going via the Android Market.
- Application will download and install.
That's it!!
Cheers,
Sylvain

this does not seem to be a correct reply.. i dont have a solution .. but i would say if your phone is new get a replacement..Before that make sure you are using default sms app and not handcent sms or some other app.. if u are using some market app.. open the app press menu and check its settings...

Hi Warrior,
Not vibrating when receiving an SMS seems to be quite common on android devices. It's not a hardware fault, no need to return it therefore...
This problem is solved by installing the application Sound Manager and changing the vibration settings in that application. You can uninstall it afterwards again if you don't want to keep it without affecting the vibration behaviour.
www .tech-mania.com/2010/07/fix-htc-evo-4g-vibrating-receiving/
An additional problem on the Wildfire is that you simply can't find the application Sound Manager on the market (probably because of it's QVGA screen).
I described here above a way to find and install this application.
I'll leave it to the original poster to decide if he wants to read more about the solution I suggested and possibly try it afterwards.
I just know it worked for me...
Regards,
Sylvain
Ok buddy Sulvian thats great i thought you were trying to promote appbrain..
By the way ppl can also try to see the settings by opening the msg app pressing the settings and exploring to desired setting...

When I get the install option on the AppBrain app I click it and it says "Not Found. The requested item could not be found."
I've synched the device and it can see the items I want to install and I've tried this on a few different apps and same error keeps coming up. Any suggestions on how to get this to work?

I dont have any of my android phones with me right now till tomorrow.. so try and explore to the correct settings..
TO try what Sulvian said ::
1> Go to market and search Barcode Scanner (make sure it can read 2D barcodes) install it.
2> Run the program and with your camera scan the following code

Yeah... You need BOTH applications for it to work
The appbrain application itself will simply redirect your phone to the official Android Market causing the 'NOT FOUND' message for some apps.
The Fast Web Installer application will circumvent the 'Android Market-step' and send the app directly to your Phone.
I'm glad it worked for you too!

That's indeed the first thing to check...
Although all settings were set correctly on my Wildfire it would still NOT vibrate when receiving an SMS. If you are in the same situation too, try to install the sound manager application with the procedure described above.

Car Cradle Application

I have had the Fascinate now for about 2 weeks and love it. First time on the android operating system and getting used to it. I have had windows mobile before.
The question i got is the Car Cradle Application on android 2.1 that comes on the phone is nice since me and the wife travel alot, but what gets me is that the navigation button in the middle of the screen goes to VZNavigator. I ave google maps installed and trying to find Nav & Go to install on it but i would like to change the button on the car cradle to go to google maps or another navigation app besides VZNavigator any idead how to do that.
Yup. Root, uninstall vz navigator, Bing, and it will default to Google maps
they call me...kick ass
hmm...so I did what you said and my car cradle app FC's whenever I select View Map, Voice Search, and Navigation. How did you get yours to work? I have uninstalled VZNav and bing.
The app still looks for vzw navigator and bing which is why it FC's. Take a CarDock.apk file out of a deodexed 2.1 ese81 build and move it to system/app/ with root explorer. This will give you google car dock. The only glitch I have found is it FC's when you click the contacts button but all the Google stuff works.
I use this one: http://www.appbrain.com/app/car-dock-v2/net.cwfk.ig88.carhome

This app was posted in the vibrant section a while back. It's a samsung app that someone downloaded from the market. I installed google maps prior to installing this and then renamed cardock.apk in the system/apps folder. Install the file and you will another version of the car dock. It looks the same except it doesn't have the home button. The maps and navigation buttons link to google maps. The voice search opens google search. The contacts button opens contacts just like the original dock. The regular search button opens bing in the browser.

It would seem as if the standalone apps they are rolling out will require at least 2.2 as a base. The same with the gmail app.

I checked out the Google car dock app that was just released. Couldn't find it in the market, so I tried to force a push from Appbrain, but it said the app requires 2.2, so no luck. Looks like we're stuck with Vibrant apps for the moment.

I know I am way late to the party but namebrandon at the AndroidCentral forums ripped a working stock car dock app. I moved the old one out and replaced it with the linked CarDock.apk and it works beautifully. Everything routes through google even the text search. Hope this is helpful!
edit: I can't post links cause i'm a noob here. Just search "stock non verizon car dock app" in the fascinate forums at android central and you'll be golden!

[Q] How to restore Samsung Program Monitor Widget in Bonsai 3.0.0 ROM?

2 questions really:
1) How can I restore the Program Monitor widget? I've tried copying the .apk into /system/app from a couple of zips (eb13 stock deodexed, midNIGHT's removed apps) and then rebooting. It never shows up in the list of widgets to add.
2) Why was it removed? If there's a good reason, I'll sure miss it but will learn to live without it.
Thanks!

it was removed because it is considered "bloatware" ie, an unwanted stock application (i'm assuming). You can always download something from the market that is comparable, like the process monitor widget.
If you want the samsung program monitor you will need to be running TouchWiz or TouchWiz GTG. The widget will not work when using any other launcher.
To use it, just copy the SamsungWidget_ProgramMonitor.apk into the /system/app directory. Once you are running a TW launcher, it will appear in the widget list (even though the Samsung Widgets list will be gone, it will show in the regular widget list)

That's exactly what I was doing. Maybe it's an odex/deodex ish with the apk I have? How can I tell whether the apk is deodexed? (I'm assuming it needs to be for Bonsai?)
Go to the thread for the rom you are running and it should say there if it is odex or not.
As far as the effect it has, couldn't tell you that; I have always switched to GTG then moved the apk over and that's all it has ever required, though I only ran roms on DK28. EB13 shouldn't be any different though.
As far as the program monitor hold down on the home button and when the box showing your last six apps opened click on task.manager at the.bottom of it.

Thanks all for your help. I'm guessing that Bonsai 3.0.0 is de-odexed since a 2.5.x thread said that version was. I've tried both the EB13-stock-deodex-signed and v2.0.1_AppsRemoved zips (midNIGHT's) to no avail. Could there be a pre-req I'm missing?
Let me take one moment to give much props to the devs behind the Bonsai 3.0.0 ROM. They've got lightning in a bottle with this one. IMHO their ROM stands head and shoulders above the rest because installing their ROM will does not require a data wipe!. Seriously, I stayed stock because it took a lot of time to get to where I was really happy with my apps and settings and I didn't want to have to start over. You don't have to with Bonsai. Incredibly fast and stable. Hats off.
Use the sdx stock app removal app. Copy the program monitor app on your sd card in folder sdx/backup. Then open sdx app then go to manage back ups then scroll down and highlight samsung program monitor and press restore. Then it should be there if not re boot phone 1x and it will be there. I do it all the time with this same app and mms app. I hate the bubble messaging. Soooo gayyyy

Thanks for the SDX Removal app idea. It didn't work at the time but I've since updated to Bonsai 3.0.1 and SDX Removal hooked me right up.
This stupid little Program Monitor app probably uses a lot of battery but I don't care, cuz itsaves more than it burns. When it turns red I know something somewhere's using cpu so I fire up OS Monitor and kill that sucker.
Lol I flashed this rom and sdx app wouldn't restore program monitor for me I had to get a .zip of program monitor and flash it in cwm but I'm glad sdx worked for you.

[Solved] Is the a way to change quality of apps on carousel

Just got the KF two days ago and I got it rooted this morning. Now after sideloading some apps from the Android Market, the apps (image Icon) look kinda low quality compared to the ones that came preinstalled on the KF. What's the best way to make them look HQ? It's just a little pet peeve of mine. Thanks in advance for the help.
Update: Please follow this link for a how to guide that will help you make high res app icons for your KF if you choose to sideload. It was put together by tokyostomp.

There is no way you can change the app quality.
You need to use another launcher like Go Launcher Ex.
there is a way it involves editing the apk or the data folder where the icons are stored. i'm currently trying to figure this out as well
Seems to me anything installed from the Amazon market looks great, anything is low res.
There is no way of upscaling the icons because all the kindle is doing in the carousel is blowing them up, i suppose you could edit the actual icon in system/app but theres not easy way of going around that
im pretty sure i have it figured out. it involves swapping out the icon in the apk with a higher rez one. i am trying to get this nailed down but my java is acting up and i can't resign apks to test out my stuff. i'm gonna reinstall java to see if i can get some signers to work
i think i may have figured it out. someone want to post an apk so i can tinker with it
So what are you going to do when the app updates with a new version?
Remodify it each time?
modify the apk again i suppose.

I would strongly suggest just using Go Launcher. The Amazon launcher is brain dead.
hi res icon for newest go launcher
http://www.mediafire.com/?rqhbwhkz556cqmq
hi res icon for dolphin browser
http://www.mediafire.com/?t15x596zuhy5e5u
***********************************************************
if you want to replace icons yourself, heres how to do it
go to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701
and download APK Manager
(You might also need to grab Java JDK)
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
once you have all that, unzip the apks you want to edit. find a icon that you feel is suitable. you will need to resize the icon to 192x192. (i've used 256x256 and it gets cut off)
now browse to the following directory:
res/drawable-mdpi/
this is where the fire looks to grab the icon for display, some programs don't have this folder as they were made for smaller displays.
if thats the case you will have to go to /drawable-hdpi/ instead
the icon for the apk should be somewhere in there (usually named icon.png)
once you got the icon replace all you have to do is zip up your project and sign it. then dropbox/usb/adb to your device
also i have had some problems overwriting already installed programs. what worked for me was uninstalling them then installed the edited apk
some programs are picky though, i tried changing the icon of rootexplorer and got constant fcs

I have Ade ex installed along with the amazon launcher. I like options and if I do come back to the amazon launcher, I still would like my icons looking crisp. Thanks for the advice though.

Some apps are finicky. I tried changing root explorer and it kept fc'ing on me. Maybe I'll figure it out if I keep tinkering with it.
I'll eventually rewrite the guide with more details.
i just noticed something funny. when i longpress and try to add a widget to the desktop in golauncher, the icon is bigger than the rest
bump for pics

Those look sweet brother. Have you been able to put together the noob guide yet for those that are less skilled at coding? Haven't had a chance to play around with it myself, but am looking forward to the venture.

Ah, I tried doing that but was using 256x256 instead of 192x192, and they were being clipped. Will definitely try this later.
Ill probably whip one tomorrow or so. I work weekends so I haven't had the time

How to stop an app from updating?

I don't want the pulse news app to update because of its ui change which I didn't like. So I want to keep using the older version 3.2 , I have a titanium backup of that version. I have the auto update enabled for apps in the play store settings but disabled for the pulse but sometimes it still updates and I have to restore the backup. I'm looking for a way to remove the pulse app from showing up in the installed app list in the play store , I tried detaching the app from play store using titanium backup but it still comes back after a day or two. Is there any other way to stop the app from showing up in the play store - my appp - installed apps and never update in the future?

Well, my response is first and foremost. Don't fight change.. If developers change the UI. They do so with a reason.
Now as a possible solution for your "problem", have you tried removing it in the playstore and then just installing the apk you backed up. Not through titanium backup, but through a filemanager. And then use titanium backup to remove a playstore link.

Well , the app went from useful to useless so I really don't have much choice. I have tried the method you suggested before but initially the app won't be seen in the play store but after two or three days it used to come back and sometimes update itself as I have auto update enabled for the apps. I was thinking of doing some minor modification that would make it impossible for the play store to find and link it to the app in the play store but I only have the thought, don't know any ways to do it.
I had the same initial reaction tot he update. Large tiles for stories, white back ground making the text almost unreadable. I found that in the settings you can reduce the tile size and the text and use a dark theme which made it usable again. Just a though if all else fails.
Disable auto-update in PlayStore settings.
Note: It will enable auto-update every time PlayStore is reinstalled

Hackergnome is spot on. From the pick it looks like all you need to do is ignore it. Update apps one at a time. At the moment they are all being updated for kitkat and ART. Some are buggy after and its taking multiple updates to sort them out. You probably will need to update at some time when dalvic goes. By then they will be sorted out.

its in the settings, but you can only access them while online so create a backup of the ones you want, turn off that feature and then restore the ones that got caught,
detach apps from the market in titanium backup pro

Dark mode and those settings are little breeze but I didn't liked ios type interface with all list at top and the removal of left side quick panel .above all these feeds are not loading up a lot of the time.all such little quirks made me go back.

That's an option but then I will have to update all other apps individually. Now when I have the auto update in play store enabled and auto update for pulse news disabled , only problem is that the pulse news keeps showing that update in the play store and sometimes shows a notification in the notification bar. The pulse won't update when I press the update all when there are other updates instead it shows a warning that the auto update for pulse is off and if I want to update it or not.So the approach is quite functional.

That's true, it's just an annoyance that I have to deal with but I thought titanium backup will be able to solve it with the detach the link from market option but from my experience it's not that useful at this moment, it detached the app but I think play store finds that within a day or two and fixes it and I will find that out when i see an update for pulse news. Then I have to restore the old backup and continue with that annoyance.

I found this app called appguard by srt , it is mostly used to monitor the activities of an app and to find if it's using any unnecessary permissions , and it provides option to disable the permissions, more like the app ops but one little feature it has is that when you put an app to be monitored , it will be detached from the play store and future updates are shown inside the appguard. So I just added the pulse to be monitored and now my problems are solved but not that happy that I had to install an another app to take care of such a small thing. I'm thinking of finding a way to change the signature of the app or make some modification so that play store can't link it to its original app in the play store.
If I don't want to update any one of the apps, what I do is, I run update all, and cancel the update download for that app.
