wireless tether speeds faster on tethered device.. - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so idk how, but it seems as if when i tether my nexus 7 to my g2, I'll get like double the speed every time.
my g2 will struggle to hit around 10 to 12 mbps on 4g, whereas my nexus 7 will shoot immediately up to 20 mbps. my phone has never hit that high, but the tethered device easily does. same server, same everything.
how is that even possible? lol

[Q] crappy wifi performance?

I seem to only get about 200kb/s via wifi on internal networks -- other people seeing the same thing?
mine is working good here...10mb per second...
mine is fast 14.6 download 4 up
14 down consistently which is better than some of my laptops get
Mine is super fast compare to both my modded n1 and g2. Usually the phones do 4 gbps down and 1.something, the xoom doubles
The speed: 9 down and 4 up.

Download speeds are quick and speed tests match my Dell laptop.
No issues here...

i always find that when speeds let down or connectivity problem arise then reset. I reset modem, router, and laptop and then all is good in the world.
Yeah, my xoom's wifi is dropping its connections to my wireless router. I will reset everything on my home network. But I still think something is wrong. I will also try a tether from my galaxy s 4g to see if I get the same loss of connection. I will respond in the next day or two on what happens.

Yeah my xoom will only load half of sites, no matter how long I wait. Wont load facebook or engadget at all. Xda works fine though.

Well, I said I would respond in the next day or two. Well, I've downloaded speedyest.net app from my tetherred phone while my wireless network was resetting. From tether: 2.60mb dl .60mb ul. From wireless network: 17.9mb dl and 2.9mb ul. No connection drops now. Things seem to be fine since resetting network and leaving it off for 10+ minutes.
Mine is working fine...way better than with 3g. Not sure about the signal of verizon in my area, my galaxy tab from tmo is faster.
I got 20M down and 1M up on my wi-fi. My Droid X can barely get 6M down and 1M up.
Not quite the same issue - my speed is fine - but I've noticed the Xoom gets 1-2 less bars of signal on WiFi in the same location than my iPhone or iPad.
It's also quite variable - depending on the orientation of the device, I watch the WiFi signal meter go up and down from 4 bars to 0, and even drop the connection. Meanwhile, my iPad is perfectly happy.
I have also noticed it's worse on 802.11n 5GHz vs 2.4GHz.
What else other than speed test.net app? Lol.
Here's a tip on how to increase your wifi performance. Not by much but it helps:
Use an aluminum foil sheet. Put the sheet behind the router and point it to where you usually use your device.
My ps3 read 92 percent, a 24 percent bump. The router is located in the living room where it has to travel through 2 walls to get to my room. My nexus and the xoom read 3 bars constantly vs 2 bars before.

2.3.5 Update - 3G Test Results! (Nexus S 4G)

My girlfriend and I both have Nexus S 4G's so I decided to update mine and leave hers at 2.3.4 until I ran some tests. Here is what I concluded after about an hour of testing at home:
Signal strength was improved by around 10db
3G download speeds were 60% faster
3G upload speeds were 40% faster
It's important to note that the Speedtest.net app does not work properly on the Nexus S 4G. To get accurate results, you should use the Speakeasy Speed Test through your phone's web browser, or, tether your computer to your phone and run any speed test from your computer.
I haven't had a chance to test 4G but I am anticipating a big improvement.
Marco
PS. Sorry for the crappy photos taken on my old Evo 4G
It's impossible to rate 3G speed performance increases based off a radio update accurately. Sprints 3G network is such a pile of crap you could get 1mb a second one minute
and this garbage the next.
I tested it a few times over an hour period and got the same results. Beyond that I don't have the time to waste running further tests.
Sorry to hear you get crappy speeds.
did you do any testing on wifi signal strength?
I was getting 2.6 mbps dl at home before update. 60% of that would be crazy. Im on miui atm and idk if im going to update if it blocks tether.

I didn't test Wifi and unfortunately I just updated her phone to 2.3.5!
Most importantly, how is the signal acquisition? One severe problem I faced is that signal is extremely patchy in areas that should not be patchy at all
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
i know it stuffed all sorts of baby unicorns into 4g speeds, previously id average 1.4 down and up.. now i get 2.6 down and 1.7 up
I installed the update via this forum and I have zero signal bars and my airave is 20 feet away if that. My wifi signal indicator jumps around from weak to strong but is mainly weak. I don't know what the deal is, I'm not trying to scare anyone. Its just annoying me.
Is there anyway I can remove this update? I've never done any kind of rooting on my nexus s 4G

Do you have the older airave that is only 1x data? If so, it's displaying the 3G bars when not using 1x (either sms or call). You'll never miss a call due to signal if that's the case. It used to be that way for me when I had the older unit (just got the newer 3G airave, and now it's full bars all of the time).

3G signal has become worse for me on the new Radio. I'm now stuck on 1X in my home when I used to be decent 3G.
This sucks.
I'm running rooted 2.3.5 with Matrix 4.0 kernel.
Before update:
WIFI was 4.9 down 4.3 up
4G was 3.6 down 1.5 up
3G was 325 kps down 100 up
After Update:
WIFI is 7.2 down 1.5 up
4G is 4.5 down 1.5 up
3G is 550kps down 100 up
I ran each test a few times.

My 3G speeds before were around 100kbps before the update, and around that now. Sprint is the worst carrier in the whole damn planet. I just check my Evo and it has around 300kbps tops... pathetic. Sprint if you are reading this, you ****ing SUCK
I just got 2.16 megs on my airwave. I used the speakeasy test. Before I could hardly get .8 mbps.

Why is that the case?
2.3.4
3G 300kbps-1000kbps depending on location
4G max 5.5Mbps
Wifi max 6Mbps
2.3.5
3G 500kbps-1200kbps depending on location
4G max 7.5Mbps (!!!)
Wifi max 8Mbps
It seems like to me that one person says it helps and then the next says it sucks so I think I'm just going to leave well enough for now because i have mine on Boost and really don't feel like setting up data and mms again...wouldn't be hard but from the looks of things it really doesn't look like its worth it.

Improving Wi-Fi Performance

Just wondering if anyone has any tips for potentially improving Wi-Fi on my Nexus 7. Compared to the various Android phones I've used, the Nexus seems to drop speeds dramatically. In an area where my phones would register a signal around -55dBm and maintain a good link speed, the Nexus is around -62dBm and link speeds drop to less than 5Mbps.
I'm using an 802.11n router and have it set to a channel with minimal interference. 11 in my case.

Also, wait more than 15 mins before you bump your thread next time

I felt the Wifi range was a bit less too, than my GS2. Only at times, however.
just got my N4 and when connecting to my Galaxy nexus hotspot it gets very poor speeds even though the GN will get very good speeds. I connected my N7 to the same hotspot and get good speeds.
for example
N4 connected to GN gets an average of about 1-3mbps
GN will get 9+ easily
N7 connected to GN gets 5+ easily.
My N4 won't even connect to a wireless network at my girlfriends that is configured exactly the same way my home one is with the same SSID and password. Connects fine at my house but not my gfs. all my other devices connnect to both just fine. N4 won't even detect the network at my GFs

My property is 100 feet by 180 feet and the router is pretty much smack dap in the middle of it in my house and I can connect to my wifi outside anywhere on my property without a problem. Might be you have a weak router if your having problems. Connecting to TMobiles network is another thing.
wifi weak
I am facing similar issues with wifi on Nexus 4.
I am having only 1/5 bars in comparison to my old Nokia N9 which shows 4/5. Both on 5 Ghz, I tried using different router , still Nexus 4 seems weaker to me.
Mine is weaker than any past device. My N10 doesn't fair much better. Solved it with a wireless repeater.

Yeah that didn't work for me. This happened on fresh stock out of box android and even after I flashed another ROM. It connects to all other wireless just fine though. Probably an issue with that router but that's quite odd if that is the case. I mean, it doesn't even SEE the network at all.
Probably your area is swamped with other networks. I've noticed where I am there are like 50 networks, It can never quite find my router in all the mess...
At my house though I can only see 2-3 networks and it works perfectly. This is probably software related.
I'm having a similar but different issue with my wifi.
No only was my wifi signal pretty weak, it seems that my phone's wifi is no longer working. I noticed that the wifi on my device would not work at all (it won't even turn on) whenever I restarted my nexus 4 and got a "Process System isn't responding" message. The only times in which my wifi was working, was when I didn't get that message. The bad part now is, I seem to be getting that message on all my reboots.
I've tried wiping cache, dalvik cache, fixing permissions, and factory resets.
Any advice?
I have a rooted stock, with clockworkmod recovery. (rooted using efrant's method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312)

Slow WiFi speed - 4.3 in general

Just got my N7 2013 today, and it dawned on me that there seems to be a huge WiFi issue in 4.3. I have a 20 Mbps connection at home, an ASUS RT-N66u router, and my N4 and both N7s are constantly testing at around 2 - 6 Mbps. I used to be able to get the full 20 Mbps.
I tried doing a factory reset on the router, rebooted the modem, changed channels, changed frequencies, switched back to an older ASUS RT-N16 router and nothing seems to work.
Anyone else experiencing similar problems? It's incredibly frustrating.

I think my router is struggling with the competition between the 3 Android devices. I somehow got it so that the N7 2013 on the 5 GHz channel can get a full 20 and the N4 on the 2.4 GHz channel can only get 15 but that's also with the other N7 tablet off. I have no idea what's going on... *confused*

I'm noticing the same issue. Can't get over 3Mbps with this nexus 7. My HTC one pulls 90-100 consistently though sitting right beside the nexus 7. And my old nexus 7 pulls 40-50.

I've got an ASUS RT-N56u and had some wifi issues with the N7. I was initially getting only around 4-5 mbps when I normally get around 20 mbps. So I toggled wifi on and off and it jumped back up to 20 mbps. I checked again after a few hours and it was down to 4 mbps again until I toggled wifi again.
So I tried setting the wifi frequency band in the N7 advanced wifi settings to 2.4 ghz instead of Auto and haven't had any problems since.
I'm noticing a huge difference with web browsing compared to the original Nexus 7.
What I do notice on both 1st and 2nd gen unit is if I'm using my blue tooth ear piece (jawbone era), it sometimes slows down my browsing and especially stream like Youtube. If I turn off the blue tooth ear piece, things are back to normal. It doesn't happen all the time with the 2nd gen but 90% of the time on the 1st gen.
4.3 WiFi speed seems vastly improved from what I've seen on N7 2013 at a Staples as well as on my N4. (Though the Staples floor model was riding on 5 GHz band)
Im Having the same issue. Nexus 7 slow Wifi

So I got my new Nexus 7, and Im having the exact same issue. Any device I have can pull 20-30mbps on speedtest from my home internet, but my New Nexus 7 only gets like 4-5mbps. Its still stock and unrooted.
Normally it wouldn't be a big issue. But streaming HD video at that rate will be choppy, and on this nice screen i want to see the clarity.
I can do a test from my Nexus 7, get 5mbps, right after do one from my GS4 and get 22. Is it the radio?

Ok I just tried that as well and went into advanced. Set it to 2.4ghz only instead of Auto. It got slightly better.
Then I turned it to Keep wifi on during sleep only when plugged in, and unchecked let Google always scan for networks.
My speed just got up to the high teens, 14-17mbps. Still my other devices are getting 20+, but this is a huge improvement from the 4-5mbps I was getting moments ago. hope this might work for others as well :victory:
I have both the 2012 and 2013 Nexus 7 and I can say that the 2013 model performs significantly better with my router (RT-AC66U). The 2013 model peaks at 150 Mbps (theoretical) and I've pulled 100 Mbps down on it in SpeedTest. The OG Nexus 7 maxes out at 65 Mbps. The range seems similar between the two.
I'm having the same issue with mine as well.
I just got my new 2013 Nexus 7 today as well, and have the same slow wifi issue. All my other devices connect and get around 20Mbps, but when I try my brand new nexus7, only get around 4-5? I tried toggling all the above options, but no dice, still same slow speed!
Anyone have any ideas? Is this related to the 4.3 update? Or is it a hardware issue?

I have the same router but with the R at the end since I bought it from Best Buy. Anyway, what firmware version are you using on yours? Also, did you have the auto-channel enabled for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands?
I'm on a 60Mbps connection and getting about 20 through 3 or 4 walls. about 50 to 60 next to the router.
Just got the Nexus 7 (2013) today, running 4.3.
I am having a different issue. My setup is as follows:
- RT-N66U as main router: device IP:192.168.1.1; DHCP: on; IP starting: 192.168.1.3
- EA-N66 as an AP: device IP: 192.168.1.2; AP mode; Default gateway: 192.168.1.1; Static DNS: same as N66U
Both devices transmit over 5 GHz, same SSIDs, same password. All my devices hop between the router and the AP when I am moving between rooms, based on the signal strength.
The Nexus 7 however, only sees the AP. When running Wifi Analyzer on my galaxy Nexus, I see both MAC ids for the two devices. The Nexus 7 only sees and connects to the AP.
Any idea what could be causing this? It has to be something with 4.2.3 :silly:
I noticed it to when tethering the N7 to my Nexus 4 on LTE. Exchanged it due to excessive screen bleed but haven't opened the new one to check WiFi speeds since I'm not sure I want to keep it at all (will just sell it or gift it).

I see now what the problem is. My Nexus 7 v2 doesn't see 5 GHz networks that are transmitting above ch 48. Since I had my router on ch 161 and AP on ch 36, the Nexus 7 would only see my AP.
Any solutions?
