Issue with power button? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so I just discovered an issue with my power button.
I tried to take a screenshot but it just won't work anymore. Volume down + power just locks the phone.
Holding down just the power button locks the phone too. I don't get the extended power menu (for reboot, silence/vibrate etc)
Any idea what could be wrong? All this just happened randomly.
I'm still on stock, unrooted, 4.3
I don't want to root/flash it, and I'd prefer not to do a factory reset (backing up and restoring data is annoying) unless there's no other option.

you could download a third party app. Did you press them both together and with equal force? Did you try to reboot it?

I can't reboot it (without a third party app) because I don't get the extended power menu.
I'm a little scared to try a third party app in case it switches off the phone but doesn't switch it on. Then, with my power button not working, I'll be stuck with a paperweight.
I tried pressing them with equal force.

Could be a software glitch? Sometime my volume buttons stops working. After reboot the issue goes away. I am using PA rom 4.3.
Are you rooted? Using custom rom or stock? If rooted, download quick boot (reboot) by sirius applications limited from playstore. It let's you reboot your phone without using power button.

FIXED :
I think it was a software issue.
I held down the power button for 25 seconds or so and that rebooted the phone and now everything's fine.
Thanks guys!

For my part, I don't know what starts the issue. But I can't get the extended power menu with plane mode, silence and co AND turn off the phone either.
I have to do a hard reboot as well and it works again after turning on the phone. But after a while, all starts again and the only one solution is hard reboot!
If you have the same issue as I do, it will happen again... Sorry !

[Q] Quick reboot using buttons?

I saw a thread on this for the Vibrant but that method doesn't seem to work for the Fascinate.
On the G1 you could hold down the call+Menu+hangup and it would reboot.
On the Vibrant you apparently can hold the power button down for 10+ seconds and it reboots.
Anyone know what it is for the Fascinate?
if it takes 10+ seconds to reboot wouldn't it just be faster to turn it off then back on?
well if your phone freezes it's much easier to hit a combo of buttons instead of pulling the battery. and if it freezes u wouldn't be able to reboot normally. plus it's much quicker when you're installing roms as it's an instant reboot and doesn't have to kill everything

if it freezes whats to say the button combo would work either? seems like if the normal shutdown and boot up isnt working your best real option is to remove the battery.
why the hell don't we have a reboot option when we hold the power button down?
Is there a way to add that?

On the G1 if it froze, the button combo did a reset. No need to pull battery I liked that feature a lot.
When I used to have my BlackBerry there was a key combo to reset it. Wish my Fascinate had one too. Then again, I dont usually have to reset my Fascinate as often as I did my BB.

[Q] Nexus S 1st day and its froze, cant unlock

Hi guys, having a problem with the nexus s that i have just got today.
Installed an app for getting wallpapers, something like FLickir HD wallpapers or something.
Set a wall paper, then browsed on through others.
Phone soft rebooted, and now the screen and bottom buttons are totally unresponsive. No idea why, and no matter how many times i battery pull etc i cant get it sorted.
Any help would be a great help.
Can you get into recovery mode?
Pull battery. Wait 30 seconds. Put battery back in.
Press and hold volume up button, then press hold power on button.
Phone should enter Fastboot mode.
Use volume keys to highlight the recovery option.
Use power button to select it.
Once the phone starts to reboot you'll quickly see a little box pouring an arrow into an android figure, hold the power button, then press hold the volume up key. Timing (on my phone) is important, you need to be holding the power key first, then get the volume up key while the box and arrow are still there.
If you get to the Android and triangle, you might still be able to do the two buttons to get into recovery, but it doesn't work on my phone; some reports on various blogs say it does, though.
Once in Recovery, you should be able to pick the option to factory wipe/reset the phone. This will wipe the ROM space and reset the phone, but it won't touch the sdcard stuff. You'll have to set up the phone again, but that's not too difficult.
Just trying it now. Didnt realise about the 2nd stage of the power button and volume up. Just rebooting now after the reset.
Seems to have worked with the phone setup.
Will all my apps be gone?

Yes, all apps from the Market will be gone.
So will your wifi settings, user accounts, EVERYTHING, except the sdcard contents.
You're basically putting the non-sdcard part of the phone back into the same state it was in when you took the phone new out of the box.
I'd recommend appbrain.com for your phone to have an easy way to reinstall apps if something like this has to be done in the future.

Ah, so much the better! It should just sync up after logging in with his account.
I thought I had to acknowledge I want that feature when I first set up the phone.
Either way, Appbrain still a neat combo of website discovery and phone installation, I find it very useful.
Ive been using app brain and the apps are being re installd.
However some of them that are in my list on the webpage, are not showing up in the app on my device. Any ideas why?

No, not sure, but if they're on your webpage, just click onto their links for the full app description page, then and cancel install if it's there as an option, and then install again.
this happend to me with two phones
Last night after my phone froze after downloading a wallpaper, after an initial pull of the battery the phone booted but the screen was unresponsive to touch, after I tried a hard reboot, with no success, I took it to best buy today and got a replacement. (Phone 1)
I Did system updated asked by the OS after i turned the phone on. (Downloaded update via wifi, and no sym card was in the phone) After Boot it was unresponsive to touch just like the last one. (Phone 2)
I went to Best Buy again and got a 3rd Nexus S. Have not done the system update and the phone is working well....for now
Any thoughts??????

does not turn on

the phone surely had more than 90% battery.
received a call like an hour back.
the phone does not turn on now.
If plugging it in and resetting it doesn't work, then you need to put your SIM card in to a different phone and start up the RMA process.

Thank You. Its working now.
What did you do to get it working again? And are you rooted and/or on a custom kernel?
thanks!
You have to hold in the power button for a longer than normal time to get it to reboot. Usually about 10 seconds should do it to get it to reboot. Any device without a removable battery, like the Samsung Galaxy Tabs, work the same way.

You should only have to hold in the power button but whatever works is good.
It was probably still turned on but frozen in a bad state - you might have a misbehaving app that you need to look in to. Glad it started working again!

Can you explain more about this? Over the weekend my phone freezes while sleeping and would not wake up, had to reboot every time. I just want to know if this is because of apps or the phone itself.
I did however, uninstalled Nova Launcher, and haven't experience anything since then. Can anyone confirm that it is the apps and not the phone?

[Q] CM10 v.0.9.1 - wake up impossible

G'day and HAPPY NEW YEAR,
I recently installed CM10 and v.0.9.1 made by Koshu and I really find it very nice, however, I have a few small problems, which may be of interest:
- If the tablet goes in Stand-by mode, I cannot wake it up anymore. I Need to press the power button for a quite long time and then it boots up from "Zero". I have also activated "wake up mode by Volume Buttons" but this also did not help. If I press the power button several times within a few seconds it even reboots too.
- Screen rotating doesn't work always. Sometimes the Screen just sticks.
- Have had some "hangings", which disappear after I return to home button.
Did anybody realized similar Problems or en has a solution?
Pleased to hear.
Best Regards
Hartmut

I had this issue to a few days ago but i was still on stock rooted rom.Power button was responding only to long press and even then it did a full restart of the tablet.
When i wanted to do a wipe in recovery i realize that the power button was not working in recovery either.
So it was not a rom related problem for me.
After some time i found the out that the problem was only there when i was charging the tablet.
Somehow one(just one) of my wall sockets is causing this sort of behavior.Maybe something wrong with the socket, do not know. The other sockets are working just fine.
I realized this when i unplugged the charger the problem went away.

I have the very same problem since I did the first install of the CM10 KOSHU ROM (8.1).
It isn't relative to the button hardware; it works perfectly during normal operation and with the original firmware, and it happens also when disconnected from the charger.
If I leave the tablet without using it for a longer time it remains stuck into a screen-off-impossible-to-wake state and the only way out is to reset (stylus push into the reset hole) or long power button press to force off and reboot.
It sometimes reboots without any reason.
The WiFi setting is "always on", as suggested by the Koshu ROM thread.
Hi,
in fact, both bugs appear to my device with v0.9.0 and 0,9.1, not with 0.8.1.
0.8.1 works perfectly to me, except the known issues with WiFi and Tethering.
I hope, Koshu will recover soo from New Years Party ...

I hope he didn't destroy too much brain cells during the Party, it would be a great loss without his excellent modding work .
By the way, I tried the wifi tethering today and it was functioning perfectly (given that you switch off the wpa protection before you try to connect to the tablet) on the 0.91 ROM.

No sound on lollipop?

Fixed problem by wiping cache from stock recovery
Anyone else flash factory image and now has no sound what soever? Completely clean factory image flash and no headphone or speaker sound. Only vibrations. Made sure everything was up all the way and tested on YouTube and play music and notification sounds. I saw one other person post they had the issue. So is it anyone who flashed factory image or everyone?

I have sound, but the button works backwards.
I was just coming in to ask the same question - no sound at all on my N10 on 5.0 factory image. Strange. Makes it really useful as an alarm clock, eh?
Fixed it. If you have the issue reboot into stock recovery and wipe cache. Works after that.
No sound on Nexus10 after upgrading to lollipop
I have the same problem as others with no sound from nexus 10 since installing lollipop.
I don't understand how you can do, what has been posted. Please can someone tell/explain how to do it.

I've tried following these instructions several times so far. Each time I get to the point where I'm pressing the power button to enter recovery, the screen goes blank for about a minute, and a "No command" message is displayed, along with a picture of a dead android robot on its back. The only thing I can do at that point is to hold down the power button until it reboots normally. I never see any option to wipe cache. Suggestions?

Mine did exactly same. Sounds worked after boot though..
My N10 with Android 5.0.1 will always cut off audio if I power it on with a headset plugged in. I just unplug the headset then reboot and wait until the desktop is displayed before using the headset. That's never failed yet.

When You see screen with android on his back (and triangle/exclamation mark), just one more step: hold Power button and tap Volume Up once before releasing the Power. A list of items should now appear at the screen. Now, you can wipe the cache partition (~10 minutes to complete).

I need help. I wiped out the cache partition following the above instruction but unfortunately, still no sound. The only way I have sound is via my bluetooth speakers. Any idea what I can do next?
I ran into this problem a couple days ago when booting after a recharge, with 5.0.1. No sound coming out of my Nexus 10, no matter what I did. Simply rebooting the tablet fixed it.
Just restart phone
All I had to do was turn my phone off and on. Running Nexus 4 on Lollipop.
Cause of the Sound Issue...
This is what we know based on several trial and error tests. The issue occurs when you have the tablet plugged into a charger and unplug it. Not sure why the issue is caused this way but each time it happens that was the case.
Solution...
After charging your Nexus 10 you will have to reboot the device once to get the sound back. You could go in and clear cache although its generally easier for most people to just restart the device. Have noticed best results when the tablet is on then turned off and back on again as opposed to just turning it on from a dead state.
I know this is annoying and more of a temporary solution but it will get your sound back just the same until Google pushes out an update to fix the underlying issue. It is annoying having to reboot the device each time you put it on the charger but for the time being it works.
Hope this helps.

For me it also kills the front mic but the back one works. The solution of restarting fixes sound and mic for me.
So its not just me. Good.

Reboot With NO Attached Devices
Try rebooting your Nexus 10 with all connections to external devices detached and off. This means NO power supply, NO bluetooth, NO HDMI cable, NO headphones, etc.
You may need to do this a few times. This worked for me when no other remedy worked, and I tried everything.
