[Q] Nexus S 1st day and its froze, cant unlock - Nexus S General

Hi guys, having a problem with the nexus s that i have just got today.
Installed an app for getting wallpapers, something like FLickir HD wallpapers or something.
Set a wall paper, then browsed on through others.
Phone soft rebooted, and now the screen and bottom buttons are totally unresponsive. No idea why, and no matter how many times i battery pull etc i cant get it sorted.
Any help would be a great help.

Can you get into recovery mode?
Pull battery. Wait 30 seconds. Put battery back in.
Press and hold volume up button, then press hold power on button.
Phone should enter Fastboot mode.
Use volume keys to highlight the recovery option.
Use power button to select it.
Once the phone starts to reboot you'll quickly see a little box pouring an arrow into an android figure, hold the power button, then press hold the volume up key. Timing (on my phone) is important, you need to be holding the power key first, then get the volume up key while the box and arrow are still there.
If you get to the Android and triangle, you might still be able to do the two buttons to get into recovery, but it doesn't work on my phone; some reports on various blogs say it does, though.
Once in Recovery, you should be able to pick the option to factory wipe/reset the phone. This will wipe the ROM space and reset the phone, but it won't touch the sdcard stuff. You'll have to set up the phone again, but that's not too difficult.

Just trying it now. Didnt realise about the 2nd stage of the power button and volume up. Just rebooting now after the reset.
Seems to have worked with the phone setup.
Will all my apps be gone?

Yes, all apps from the Market will be gone.
So will your wifi settings, user accounts, EVERYTHING, except the sdcard contents.
You're basically putting the non-sdcard part of the phone back into the same state it was in when you took the phone new out of the box.
I'd recommend appbrain.com for your phone to have an easy way to reinstall apps if something like this has to be done in the future.

Ah, so much the better! It should just sync up after logging in with his account.
I thought I had to acknowledge I want that feature when I first set up the phone.
Either way, Appbrain still a neat combo of website discovery and phone installation, I find it very useful.

Ive been using app brain and the apps are being re installd.
However some of them that are in my list on the webpage, are not showing up in the app on my device. Any ideas why?

No, not sure, but if they're on your webpage, just click onto their links for the full app description page, then and cancel install if it's there as an option, and then install again.

this happend to me with two phones
Last night after my phone froze after downloading a wallpaper, after an initial pull of the battery the phone booted but the screen was unresponsive to touch, after I tried a hard reboot, with no success, I took it to best buy today and got a replacement. (Phone 1)
I Did system updated asked by the OS after i turned the phone on. (Downloaded update via wifi, and no sym card was in the phone) After Boot it was unresponsive to touch just like the last one. (Phone 2)
I went to Best Buy again and got a 3rd Nexus S. Have not done the system update and the phone is working well....for now
Any thoughts??????

Don't Panic
Okay, so let's get a little more info:
How far into the boot process does it get? You say "sense" doesn't load but you don't say if the phone freezes or if it goes blank or shuts down or what.
Have you installed any new apps, especially right before the phone froze?
Why are you removing the battery instead of hitting the reset button?
If you installed any applications to the microSD card, this may be a cause as well. Try removing the microSD card before turning the phone on and see if that helps. If it does, you will want to remove that program and install it to the phone instead.
I'm thinking that you are a candidate for a Hard Reset. If you can't get your phone to boot, you will have to do this anyway. Problem is, this will delete all of the changes you made to the phone, including all installed apps and contacts. It sucks, but it will probably be necessary.

1. everything loads up until it says htc sense loading.. and it just stays like that forever..i can access the start menu settings/etc but no sense.'
2.no apps have been installed or downloaded anything from emails on the phone in over 4 days.
3. i have hit the reset button, removed the battery..nothing seems to work. even have taken the microsd card out and tried the hard reset still nothing..
is there anyway to reformat the hole phone? im guessing thats my only option correct? (any program i can use to back up my contacts..i have a mac so its got to be mac compatible?)Thanks

The "reformat" option you are thinking of is the Hard Reset.
Check out this vid to see how to try that:

Go to Settings\ Security\ Factory Reset. Then it asks you to type "1234" and hit Yes. That's it. Possimpible.

You might want to try and restart it but take out the SD Card. That happened to me once and I tried that and it launched ( i knew about this because that used to happen to my wing before) it managed to bring sense back but at the end of the story I had to hard reset it and start from scratch!

Solution to the download loops?

Has anyone found a solution to the download loops? I'm sick of them now as I cannot use any purchased apps..
I purchase apps from the store and they get stuck in a download loop.
There has to be a solution for this. I've tried clearing the cache etc for the market, download and gmail AND have rebooted and cleared the dalvik cache etc to find nothing works...
Sometimes cancel the download then hit install again..this wor for me...let it alone then..for big ones I do this and leave it alone..for smaller files as soon as I hit install..it already downloaded just did not install for some reason.
Happens to me often. If it gets hung up hit the back button and go to my apps in market go to the bottom of your apps on the left where it shows apps waiting to install and click on it. accept the permissions and install works every time for me

Not for me. I've tried clearing all the cache's, even booting into CWM and clearing the cache and dalvik.
Still nothing..
If you click install and nothing happens, power the tablet off (hold in the power button til the menu pops up, then select to power off). When you restart and go back into market, the app will install correctly.
*Don't* cancel and try again. While this will usually, eventually work, it will also often result in apps not appearing in the My Apps list, or appearing as uninstalled when they're already installed.
If the powering off trick doesn't work, you've probably already upset market to the point where it is corrupted by doing repeat installs. I had the exact same problem myself, and after wiping my tablet and starting from scratch, all is fine with the powering off method. I still get ~50% of my app installs doing nothing initially, but 100% (20-ish apps) have then correctly installed after a power cycle.
All this said, it is a really, *really* annoying bug that I hope Google fixes soon.

Didn't work. However I upgraded to Prime 1.5 and all my problems went away

[Q] Some apps have started closing immediately on opening

Earlier today, a few apps on my Nexus 7 have just started closing within one or two seconds of opening them.
Google Search Bar, Facebook and Catch Note all close within a couple of seconds after opening them. I have used them fairly frequently for the last few weeks with no problems. Other apps, such as Twitter, Chrome and some games all work fine.
I have turned my device on and off a couple of times, but the problem still persists. Any ideas?
The problem is still occurring for me.
Gmail, Calendar etc... all also closing within a second or two of opening. Is this a common problem?
Is your N7 all stock or do you have a custom rom?...custom kernel?
You really need to provide some information in order to get help.
I haven't seen it in the OP so: Reinstall them

I haven't rooted my Nexus, or anything like that, it's all stock.
I just uninstalled Facebook, then downloaded it again. It seems to be working. Other apps still have the same problem. I assume that I have to do the same for all other apps - but is that even possible for apps such as Gmail, Calendar and the Search Bar?
Uninstalling and re-downloading hasn't worked as I had hoped.
It seems to have worked for Facebook. But I did the same for Catch Notes, and although it worked for a minute or so when setting it up, after creating a test note, it force-closed, I opened the app up again, and the old problem of closing within 2 seconds happened.
Other apps such as Gmail, I uninstalled, 'updated' again, and nothing changed, still closes immediately. There is no error message, it just returns to the home screen.
I thought that Task Killer might have been a problem, but I uninstalled that, restarted the Nexus, and the problem persists. Actually, when I turned off my Nexus, and tried to turn it back on, it was stuck on the 'coloured X' screen for a few minutes, I had to hold the power button down, and turn it on again. I'm starting to worry about my Nexus now.
Update:
A couple of other odd ones.
Google Drive doesn't even open. When clicking on the icon, the normal shading effect happens, but nothing else, no window even for a second.
Google Calendar opens, and just has a white screen, as if it is ready to load the calendar, but nothing loads. It doesn't close, just remains on the white screen, which can't be backed out of without pressing the home button.
Have you tried doing a cold-boot on the device? Maybe another app running in the background is causing conflicts. Where there any recent apps that you've downloaded?

I have just followed the instructions for a 'cold-boot' and now my Nexus can't get beyond the 'X' screen...
I have held the power button down a number of times, and tried turning it on again - but the 'X' continues to be displayed for over 20 minutes.
Just managed to turn my device on - but the problem still exists.
I didn't download any new apps that seem to have caused this problem. Though I think an app might have force closed and the Nexus displayed an error message such as "android/Google system stopped working" (probably different) and my home screen went blank for a while. Everything reappeared though after a short while. It could have stemmed from that.
Sorry about another bump, but i'm wondering if anybody has any more ideas before I go for a factory reset?
Edit: Actually, I think that I have found the cause of the problem. I just opened a game (Let's Golf 3) that I was playing before the problem started and after a few seconds, a message popped up saying "Unfortunately, Launcher has stopped". When I press OK, it returns after a few seconds.
I pressed the sleep button, and my Nexus turned off. Now trying to turn it on again, having some problems getting past the 'X' screen again. If I finally get in, should I uninstall the game? Any other solutions to this problem?
If your N7 can boot up, go the isolate & identify routines - disable/uninstall or freeze the golf game - do a normal shutdown/restart.
If normal functionality is back, you've just found the source. Not a gamer myself except for Angry Birds ... , but from the Play Store description, it access & make changes to system & protocol, etc. as you should contact/email golf's tech support for resolution. Otherwise, take a look of any background running apps or widgets, newly added or updated.

Thanks for the help.
I couldn't get my N7 to boot up, so I finally gave in and did a hard reset (by holding power + volume down, Recovery Mode, then wipe data etc...) but my N7 still won't boot up
I have wiped it twice, and rebooted it, yet it is constantly stuck on the 'X' screen. What on earth can I do?

You will need to download the factory image, unlock your bootloader, and flash it. There is a guide on this forum, it might be stickied.

I was hoping there was going to be a resolution to this other than a "flash to stock" suggestion... My Nexus started doing this exact same thing this past Sunday when it ran out of power completely and needed to be recharged. After it powered back up from charging the following apps quit working altogether or just started quitting once it appears they try to access data: Netflix, Currents, Zillow, Gmail, HBO Go, Press (though Google RSS Reader works), NVision, TegraZone and a couple others. I have done the reboot thing as well and almost had this thing brick again (stuck at X), but I managed to clear the data cache from the fastboot menu and it started up again. I'm now at the point where I'm troubleshooting individual apps but the clear data/cache, uninstall - reinstall process isn't working for any of the broken apps. This is now the 4th time I will be facing a 'flash to stock' situation as it appears that I've had every problem that leads to this 'fix'. I'll try a couple more things (mostly deleting and clearing everything) but I'm really frustrated with how many times I've had to flash this damn thing. sigh.

Phone optimizes after every reboot.

Why is my phone optimizing after every time I restart my phone. I'm getting tired of this. Why is it doing this? This is a stock rom. It comes up as a black screen with a white dialogue box that's says Android is starting...optimizing apps. Can someone help me stop this? This has been going on for about 3 days.
Did you do anything to your phone when it started, or did it happen out of the blue?

I suggest that as soon as it is up and running you straight away do a full back up with a product like "wondershare trans mobile" This will give you a full backup of all your data, apps, contacts and SMS etc.
When you have done that it's time to do a full factory reset using the Volume Down Button while pressing the Power Button this will show you the bootloader use the Volume UP & Down to select factory reset. then press the power button to select start.
When it reboots you can connect to your USB to your pc and copy back your contacts sms etc.
I hope that helps
Keep us posted as to how you do>

Freeze at wake up, system UI not responding

Dear forum users,
I'm the proud owner of a 6t, but it is starting to become a nightmare.
This started on June, with Android 9. I had the phone freezing at wake up (screen stays black, even when I get my op6t in hand, not responding to power button). After some time ranging from 1s to 30s, the phone will wake up and execute every action I may have done (multiple power button press etc).
I tried to do a wipe cache and data with no success.
Did a factory reset followed by a Google account restore (apps and all) that let me with a day fine, but it came back.
Then I did a factory reset with manual restoration, app by app. Everything fine till now (writing this the phone hanged till home button press (yeah I use the evil navbar)).
I did the same procedure, but for unknown reason, I only got a day off. I'm trying right now safe mode.
This time it happened right after a strange popup poping in a baby care app, asking me to select customized Gads to continue using the app.
I've posted on their support site too, but I'm willing to know what would you think about this.
Usually the freeze happens on wake up.
Screen will stay entirely black. No heating, no battery drain.
As the phone is a year from the buy order, I might ask for a refund or exchange, but it seems to me that the issue is with my Google account. Cause if I reinstall slowly app by app, I'm pretty sure this would go **** someone else phone, as for the first time.
I'm running oos 10.3.0 OTA
Thanks for reading to this line.
Found out this comes from end of trial week with no ads (accepting ads) from baby daycare app from drilly apps.

I was going to say that it sounds like you are getting pop ups from an app.
Glad you figured it out :good:

I was unaware of the secure mode, which is so fine to test if non system app is a source of problem without any factory reset or uninstall.
For those who also aren't just long press power off popup button.
