[Q] Wish S4 Came With Training Wheels - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

If you have to push ANY button it isn't "hands free". I'd very much like to be able to wake my brand new Galaxy S4 with just a voice command while driving. Once woken I'd like to open and use S Voice with just voice commands. I'm not COMPLETELY dim. I've managed to build a few computers from parts and passed a bunch of tests that granted me the privilege of putting some fancy letters after my name. But I confess I never thought I'd have to learn how to use a telephone again once I turned 63 years of age. Nor learn to drive. I SWEAR that toilet paper display would have fallen even if I'd not tapped it with my electric geezer mobile. I tried several of those Blue Tooth devices that you put on your visor, but they didn't get it done. Next I replaced my ancient Subaru Outbacks stereo with a new Sony that has Blue Tooth Capabilities, bought an iBolt dock to stick onto my dash to hold the phone, and sometime next week will have four speakers installed to rectify the fact my left drivers door speaker and my right rear passenger speaker were nonfunctional.
But STILL had to push a button to wake the phone up, before trying to speak both clearly and loud enough to overcome the noise level in my 185,000 mile Alaskan Subaru and hope S Voice's voice recognition would work.
I saw an application called Tasker and one called AutoVoice and without looking into the complexity involved bought them. Oops...
I'd like to be able to stick the Galaxy S4 into the fancy (And KickAss) iBolt, start my car, and be able to turn the phone on with a voice command, and then use the S Voice feature built into the device to call my Geriatrician.
So I'd appreciate any help y'all might condescend to supply. From lurking about I do believe this Forum is the Mount Olympus where the Android God's and Goddesse's dwell.

other than tapping the home button twice (default setting I believe) there is no other way afaik

what does the button on you're headset do ???

I put my exec into corporate mode before I started using it for phone calls !!! and now my button does nothing (im not sure if it ever did) I would imagine it is send, end and redial last number !!! is it supposed to work in corp mode, is their anyway to activate it ??
C'mon guys some of you must have pressed the button before !!!
The button on my Bluespoon AX tells my MDA to start the voice dialling app.
Snag is, when it's in my bag, if it gets accidentally pressed, it recognises from nowhere my only voice tag and dials it.
Of course, I don't know this until I get a text later from the contact saying 'Your phone called me again.'
Most annoying so tag removed to stop it.
Bloody thing. But I love my MDA and wouldn't swap it for anything else on the market right now.
I mean the button on the incorparated wired handset !!!! not bluetooth
Press to answer a call, and press to end if I remember right.
I thought as much, mine puts my call on hold if I am already in the middle of a call, and that's all it does it's quite frustrating. I'm getting a new XDA soon anyway (my Mic has packed in) there were a couple of funny issue's with this one, when I first booted it the keyboard lights didn't work, I had to hard reset it to get any joy.
Although using a Magician instead of a Universal I tried my wired headset today myself... does nothing during a call I started. Won't spend money on trying it the other way around now... disappointing.
I hope it fires an event which is not handled yet - so it can be picked up by an application to start Voice Command for instance.

Magic Word for voice commands

on my last phone (sagem) there was a feature that recognised a 'special' word at all times ( an unusual word, not likely to pop up in conversation - mine was hippopotamaus). this then activated the voice command, you spoke the name of the person you wanted to ring etc.
in otherwords it was a voice recogniser without the need to press any buttons at all. it was a great addition, although it did reduce the battery power.
is this kind of application available on the wizard?
I would be very interested in seeing this aswell. I'm sure my old Ericsson had something like this too for answering calls handsfree many years ago.
I had this on my last phone. However, i hardly ever used it because if i forgot to turn it off it would often hear, or think it heard, my magic word in my pocket in noisy environments. Would be handy in the car, a time out to automatically turn it off after it had not been used for a while would be handy too

Answering calls when open and Speakerphone mic volume

Hi,
Is there anything that can be done to improve the mic volume when on speaker phone - I have had complaints when more than a foot or so away that people can't hear me.
I have the phone open on my desk most of the time and am just trying to work out the best way to deal with calls as they come in. At the moment unplugging the USB and then flipping the screen and then trying to answer the call seems a bit ham fisted and I keep on loosing calls
I personally never use my MDA Pro as a conventional phone. I find it too bulky. My own method is to always use a bluetooth headset.
If I was in your situation, I would have the Universal open on my desk, with the bluetooth headset lying beside it. When the phone rings, simply put on the bluetooth headset, press the call receive button on it, and away you go.
You don't really need to flip the screen, just close it and then use the green button to answer the call. Will work fine with the USB connected if you don't mind people looking at you strangely.
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the responses.
I don't have a headset so haven't gone down that route yet. Will they work with Skype and VOIP software etc on the phone?
As for closing and then picking up, I'm wondering if the phone has a problem because I have tried this a couple of times and have lost the calls although I am generally unplugging the USB, closing the phone and then answering - have only had the phone a couple of days so still getting the hang of it.
Hmmm....can it be used when in pda mode to answer and make calls... I have tried this, but I think either my machine's mic & speakers dont work on the inside (screen side) of the clamshell, the other person on the line can't hear, and I hear their voice (distantly), which means it is coming out of the back of the screen, not the front. Its either that or the device just isnt designed to work in this orientation.
Has anyone else tried recieving or making calls with the screen facing out in portrait mode?
Re the Bluetooth headset answering method, great idea, I do this, but I have found that sometimes my o2 blue headset loses the pairing when I press the answer call button, so I lose the call anyway.
Can anyone tell us how it should work, will the recent rom upgrade fix this, is there even a mic and speaker on the inside lid?

The Mic is right next to the power button, so it is as close to your mouth when in PDA mode or closed. Also There are two speakers on the hinged lid, in PDA mode it's the slightly recessed oval shape 10mm from the top dead centre.
I've never discovered a software method of disabling this speaker. Possibly a hardware fault? Might be worth discussing with your handset provider

Voice Talk not doing voice dial when screen is locked

Hi guys,
I have been trying to find answers for this problem ever since i bought my Galaxy S2..but no luck so far.
The problem is trying to voice dial someone while the phone is paired with a bluetooth headset and on standby/screen locked mode. In other words i want to be able to voice dial someone when my galaxy is in the pocket instead of having to unlock the screen and go for voice dial and then say command which negates the whole point of having voice dial.
So far when i press the bluetooth's button, the phone goes - "what would you like to do" and then i try saying ''call (person)" but the phone seems to be doing nothing after that..but when the screen is unlocked and i do the same thing, it actually does dial(no point because if i am able to take the phone out and unlock it, i might as well dial it instead of voice). What really hits me is that the bluetooth actually does trigger the voice talk application and the phone requests me to say what i want to do but after that nothing happens.
Can you guys tell me whats going on? This problem is really making me hate this phone because the phone boasts so many ads about voice dialling but it cannot do a simple voice dial which is possible on ancient phones. Cheers
I've been playing with this for the past couple of days and here's what I've learned. It's complicated because there are multiple settings that effect each other. The phone has to be on to use Voice Talk. It can be locked, but has to be on and active. In other words, Voice Talk won't wake the phone up if it was shut off with the on/off button. Also, the app has to be in the foreground for it to listen. If you go to the home screen or launch another app its no longer active and listening.
Also, similar to the OP, my headset reacts strangely when I use its command button. When I push the button and say "phone command," it says "activating your phones inbuilt calling features," and then says "this feature is not supported on the connected phone." But, after that, Voice Talk is still listening but acts wonky. Instead, I set Voice Talk to Listen Over Bluetooth and I don't have to push anything - I just say Hi Galaxy. OP, I bet your headset's experiencing something similar. Try turning on Listen Over Bluetooth and Wake Up Command and then just say Hi Galaxy to start Voice Talk. I bet it works. Don't forget you can also set Motion to on and then just tap the phone twice (even if its locked) to activate Voice Talk. I'm guessing that uses less battery on both the phone and headset then leaving the Wake Up Command on.
Here's my take on each of the settings:
Listen Over Bluetooth
Has to be on for Voice Talk to work via a headset. If not, you can hear the prompts through the headset but Voice Talk is listening through the phone's built in mic.
Auto-Start Listening
I haven't figured this one out. Either off or on the phone seems to behave the same way. The best I can figure is that Voice Talk starts listening immediately the first time its opened instead of having to tap the button to make it start listening.
Wake Up Command
If Listen Over Bluetooth is active, the Wake Up Command has to be on for Voice Talk to hear Hi Galaxy.
Driving Mode
Is really mislabeled. All it does is announce new e-mail (but not read them) and read text messages.
So that's my take. I'd be interested in everyone else's experiences and if they've learned anything different or better.

Thanks for this detailed reply. I think at some point I have tried these settings but not sure if they were in the exact matching order. I will give it another go with everything set up to the way you have mentioned and see what I get. I am sure I am very close to actually getting it to work though..fingers crossed ..and yes if anyone else have different combinations of settings or ways they got it to actually work from a locked screen, please share it here. Thanks.
BarryH, I did try those exact settings like you had mentioned but still no luck. On triggering the voice talk with bluetooth headset's button, i can hear voice talk say "what would you like to do?" and does not respond to anything i say. (while screen is off).
I am thinking of installing Vlingo and trying to get that to work this way? Not sure if it would make a difference though.

If you do what I suggested you don't have to push the command button. The phone will be listening for the "hi galaxy" command all the time.

I noticed the same thing, when paired with my car, the phone does not respond to pressing the button on my parrot if the phone is locked
I disabled the factory lockscreen and now use widget locker instead, problem has gone away

I was thinking of trying this next as I have run out of options..so you say it worked? Then I will get widget locker and see how I go. So let me get this straight - i get widget locker and use the lock screen that comes with that or using widget locker i disable the stock lock? Or I should disable the stock lock from settings and then use widget locker? Cheers
yea disable stock lock in settings and then use widget locker only for lockscreen

Tried this last night and unfortunately its still doing the same thing. On holding the bluetooth headset's button while the phone's screen is off I can hear the phone go "what would you like to do" and right after this i say commands like "call (someone)" but nothing happens. When the phone's screen is on, it actually works when i do the same thing which just surprises me to as why. Also when the screen is off and voice talk not on the front screen the wake up command doesnt work. So again a person has to leave his screen on (without letting the phone go to standby) and leave the voice talk app running for voice dial to work.
And to make things worse the double tapping with motion turned on settings doesnt bring up voice talk when the screen is off..again putting me in the same situation. The only way voice talk work on this phone is when the screen is on so far which isnt really practical in situations you would want to use voice commands..i hope samsung or google brings a better solution to this issue because this phone's got so much boasting about being able to voice command but isnt able to perform what an iphone or old nokia do
If you've got Tasker, you might be able to set something up... I noticed the same problem last night, and yeah, it's totally counter-intuitive...
I'll let y'all know how I go...
BTW - also noticed that while it may listen through my car bluetooth, it certainly doesn't play through it, and it's next to impossible to hear the mousey voice in a moving vehicle muffled in the depths of my pocket anyway...
Stupid half-baked software!

I cant agree more about it being counter-intuitive..and yes its not nice the voice prompts coming through the phone but i remember once somehow the voice prompts did come through the bluetooth headset i dont know how. Like you said something is not letting it operate properly, like blocking it. I havent used this Tasker but have used task manager like apps in the past. So you believe you could try to figure out a fix for this..i appreciate your efforts because I am just lost at the moment. Let me know how you go mate. And I will let you know if I get around this issue too. Thanks mate

Ok i found a way to get this voice dialling to work when the screen is off but not using a bluetooth headset, instead the wired headset for the time being.
So I can trigger voice dial when the phone is in the pocket and voice prompt comes to the headset, i say command and it works . I dont mind it working for the wired headset as that is good enough for the time being while driving. If you need to know how i got this done just give me a buzz. There are two pieces of software that I got to set this up. Cheers.
I just deleted built in vlingo crap and took generic Google voice dialer apk from my nexus s. Plus side you don't have to be connected to net to dial contacts and I can hear reply in headset as well.

Great Use for your Retired EVO

I was responding to a few emails about people retiring their much beloved EVO phones.
I still use mine, and argue for its time it was the BEST phone made. With that said I still use mine as a media player at the gym and on long trips (the kickstand comes in handy on planes) thanks to the removable and swappable batteries.
However, I got a 2nd one and wanted to throw out how to use it as a security/monitor device at home or away.
First, download 3 apps..
A sound detector https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.mvainformatics.android.sounddetector
Security Camera App https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ivuu
VOIP dialer that can act as a NATIVE DIALER and provide a calling service. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.talkatone.android
1. Load Sound Detector.
This app will continue to monitor the area for noise. How loud, and how long the noise happens is up to you. With this app you can also set it to text or call you if the noise level is reached per your settings.
2. Load Alfred.
I like Alfred because it is dead simple and free. It will give you all the main things you want out of a service like take a video and allow 'push to talk' over the system to chat with whomever is on camera (say your kids or wife is still at home, you can just 'pop' in and talk with them and they can hear and talk with you and not have to mess with 'answering the phone'. Alfred also will alert to motion etc if no one is there.
3. Load the VOIP. I recommend this one because it is free AND more importantly will act as a 'native dialer' so the phone will automatically make a call over WiFi (assuming you aren't keeping this this phone as a primary active line and have it in airport mode).
And there you have it. A free security system that will alert you if the smoke detector goes off, someone breaks a window, or ruffles around in your hotel room.
Hope this gives new purpose to a GREAT phone..
Dave
