Hi
My contracts upgrade date is coming round soon, Ive used the S4 the G2 and so far and Im awaiting the Nexus 5 as an option too. So far the G2 beats the S4 by a mile. So much faster and much nicer in the hand. The screen is insane too but im left with one problem. Software. I absolutely hate the LG skin. So that leads me to my question, after having had a look around I can only see 6 or so different ROMS around for this phone and over 30 for the S4, do you think this will improve with time and with the Nexus 5 being released (as they are very similar phones)?

It's worth looking at the Sony Z1 as well - I tried it, and didn't like it - settled on the G2.
The nexus 5 will obviously have better dev support - but until the phone is officially released its impossible to know if its worth the wait!

Yeh, Ive seen the Z1 around and really don't like it much, I wouldn't say i've had an in-depth look though. Ill be sure to check it out when im near a phone shop again
Im wondering if, because the Nexus 5 is rumored to be similar if not a modified version of the G2 (see the link below) then maybe that will open the G2 up to more ROMS? I just need to be sure that it will have new software available for the next two years.

Having looked through the forums more in depth it seems the Verizon variant has wayyy more ROMS available, any chance of that spreading to the international variant soon?

Well with a CM nightly we're certain to have plenty of roms - I don't think you need to worry about that.
As for the N5 - just wait and see, figure out what's important and if it has them.
Will it have an IR blaster for instance? I'm amazed how handy that has been since I got the G2 - in fact its the only reason I'm not on the CM nightly at the moment (IR blaster not yet working).

One thing the N5 is very likely to have that we (international G2 owners) are missing is the wireless charging option.
having had mine for a few days, using the ir blaster which i set up in 15 mins for all my stuff, everyday....do it, get the G2, everything works like a dream and it is blindingly fast. For instance bbc.co.uk loss 2x faster on my lg g2 than on my new iphone 5s

Yeh thanks for the advice, Im probably going to wait till after the Nexus 5 is released just to be sure but im 90% sold on the G2 it is a truly stunning phone from what ive seen. The only thing I hate is the wireless charging being exclusive to Verizon.. which we don't even have the option to get, here in the UK
I know.. I was gutted when I found out it wasn't available.
One website wrote there will be a case that enables it, but I call BS.. There are no connectors on the exterior of the phone for a case to interface with in order to get the power to the battery (except the USB, which obviously is a no go)!

Its probably just like any other wireless charger kit/case for phones that dont have it. The case its self will connect to the usb port and charge that way.
There is an unofficial one : http://blog.ipanipan.com/post/64212784741/lg-g2-gets-qi-wireless-power just doesn't seem like an elegant solution, I would have thought LG would have come up with a better way of doing this. It isn't like wireless charging hasn't been big news for ages!

Personally I would wait for the Nexus 5 or at least for the announcement of the Nexus. The specs are rumored to be pretty close to that of G2 and if that holds true I would go with that. Nothing beats stock android and quick updates.
Yeh I think I'm going to have to wait for the nexus 5 to be released (fingers crossed for tomorrow) and go from there. I'm just worried like some of my phones in the past the international G2 will be stuck with no one developing for it with the latest stuff like AOKP in a year or so. I've had this with my GW620 It ended with only 2 ROMs having ever been released for it.

I had bought a N4 in January this year and gave it to my cousin last month. Now I'm using her aged Galaxy S and need to upgrade sooner or later.
The N4 still looks to be the best phone for my needs, but I'm also intrigued by the possible N5 in a couple of months.
Shall I get the N4 now or wait for N5 for 2-3 months?

Either way you could probably wait for the N5 come out before you decide on anything because if you get the N4 it'll be cheaper when the N5 is out or get the N5 if you decide you like it.
You can always wait for the next big thing or you can buy right now what you want.

N4 was good but is actually dated now, IMO. These things have very short lives at the top. Get a newly announced phone.

No LTE, a not so great camera, and pretty bad battery do make it a bit dated. The software runs great on the N4. But there are some definite hardware limitations that need to be upgraded.

LTE is easily achievable for someone with technical skills. I also don't really like the battery and the lack of an SD card.
NExus 4 is still a good phone. I got one about six weeks ago and it's great for me.
It all just depends on what you want and how long you are willing to wait. I have no idea when the N5 will be announced, but if you think you can wait for it to come out, then wait. Even if you decide you'd rather go with the N4, then you can get it cheaper when the N5 rolls out. Either way, if you wait you win, you either get the newest device or you get a still pretty good phone on the cheap.
Of course, if you can't wait, you are still getting a pretty good phone in the N4.
In my opinion, in the end either way you come out with a pretty good phone.

LTE only works on band 4 which is rarely used in the US except on T-Mobile. AT&T only use band 4 in a few places. This is not a LTE phone for 99% of people.

I love my N4 but it is lacking in hardware compared to many of the latest phones. I will certainly be updating when the new Nexus comes out later this year.
I'm now on my 3rd nexus 4 because the Sammy s4 and the HTC one just didn't do it for me. After I brought them .
The nexus 4 won't be outdated for a long time. All this jargon about more cores...ghzzzz...ram.... Etc will make nothing any more then what it can already do. The n4 runs like a gem. My battery is lasting more then 22 hours. Screen is perfect. Memory is suffient. Ram is fine. Speed is awesome. Camera is great with some tweeks. Lte runs fine.
The only reason ppl change soon is because of advertisement and bigger numbers mean better ... Comparing my n4 to an s4 I had its so much more smoother and better on most tasks.
Hell even the galaxy nexus is still a cracking phone.
Get the n5 if you feel it will bring more into your life. I can bet most of its features will be portable asap....
Either way a nexus is a great phone.

The biggest gripe about the device is probably the storage. Hardly getting by with the 16gb since I use it for music as well. Have about 1gb of space left which I reserve for downloading roms and whatnot and I barely have any music stored on it. Lack of LTE out of the box was also a pain for a couple months before I decided to go on XDA forums since I am on T-Mobile. If T-Mobile is in your area and you have good coverage, no reason not to switch to them since they don't have contracts and have the cheapest unlimited plan. Either way, just wait for the N5 announcement so you can either get the N5 if you decide that you want better features right out of the box or get the N4 and save a bunch of money.
Grow up.. do a market research and decide for yourself.. seriously.. ppl want everything told to them these days..

What exactly is outdated?!
Two things that You can get "better" with newer phone:
1) FHD screen (why do You need this? N4 screen is HQ allready)
2) More pixels to camera (and as You know - more pixels doesn't mean BETTER camera)
Nexus 4 is great phone but you can think htc one or s4 if you have money to buy them.

My two cents. I knew about the moto x, and possible nexus 5 but I went with the nexus 4 because its well-known inside and out. Pure Google, or nodded Google for us modders, and its half the price(or a quarter of the price through T-Mobile) than the "latest and greatest" which honestly aren't that great. I get in the 20k mark on antutu, only to be beat out by the one and s4. The camera isn't that bad, and its loads better than some of my older phones, and most importantly no skinning or waiting for updates.
The nexus 5 honestly will probably be slightly better but I love my nexus 4. I'd say go for it now as the new phone may have another guarded Qualcomm chip. At least this one isn't so guarded.

Hey Guys, i am a RAZR MAXX owner here and really tempted with LG G2 because of the price here and its technology (mainly the GRAM) and its battery life. However i am put off by the software side though, as it is a bit too cartoonish for me and i really hate those overblown statusbar buttons and some LG history of late ROM update. So.. should i forget about that and take the plunge? I actually am a Sony fan, but their UI is too elegant for me that i will waste my money on my paid icon themes besides the power consumption of the Sony's (esp the screen) is rather high for now so i thought that maybe the LG G2 is the bang of the buck for me.
So to sum it off, here are my concerns:
+ Battery Life
+ Top class chipset
- LG UI (but that's the main point, so i can replace it with my Nova and Icon pack without feeling hesitant rather than with the Sony's UI )
- almost non existent future update from LG (please CMIIW)
Any input will be appreciated

I took the plunge, coming from an HTC Thunderbolt. LG has already started better than many other manufacturers by releasing a phone with top specs, a current version of the OS (barely behind what is on the Nexus line, not several versions behind like some other new phones when released), and posted the source less than a month after the release. This phone is also easily rootable, the dev's are hard at work on their different projects such as modifications to stock, CM in alpha, etc. Few manufacturers have a great track record when it comes to timely updates or support after the first year, but LG is in the game already with a good start and the dev community should be able to keep this phone updated well past the time when this phone is "older" in the tech world.
I'd say check out the phone, read the reviews, see the support we have already, and base your decision off of that. This is a phone that should easily last me for 2 years or more until I decide to get another one.
G2 is the superior phone & fulfills all your needs. Change the launcher if you don't like the stock one and you're good to go!
Not sure if you are a rooter or not and I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but I'm kind of worried about development for the G2. So if you do like tinkering, just keep the slow start in mind. I love and appreciate the work the devs put into these devices. I do donate, btw. Just wasn't expecting the slow start with available roms. I thought this device's forum was going to explode

As I noticed that you're Indonesian I suggest you to look for a promotion or discount price for g2. I just bought my G2 three days ago at LG G2 Promotion, Central Park, Jakarta.
One of the best deal I've made. Got IDR 1 million cashback (from the original price IDR 6.8mil) and a bluetooth device. As for the phone itself, coming from Nexus 4, I find G2 noticeably faster and smoother out of the box than my N4. I am proud owner of N4 but compared to G2 (stock vs stock), it's way a different world. Only with custom rom and kernel (PA rom and hellscore kernel) my N4 get near the smoothness of G2. Maybe the only thing I miss is that the development here is not as much as Nexus generation devices.

To OP: you don't have to worry about dev for LG. Just sit, relax and this phone will get the ROMs it deserves. If you think LG is bad, think again (I'm looking at YOU, Motorola).
There are so many launchers and icon packs that will replace Lg ui. G2 will also receive 4.4 updates so that will ties your up for a while.
Devs for g2 are doing great works. Root, recoveries, are avaliable. If you are not in to flashing rom you can stop with rooting your phone, and be happy with the things you can do.
Personally I came from nexus device. I flash roms every other weeks to try to get best battery life and smoothness for my phone. With G2 hardwares and battery, I am enjoying stock, forget about flashing and just uses the phone.

First, this is NOT an attack on you personally so please dont take it that way. But what the hell phones did you guys come from that make the dev and forum for this phone slow?! This forum is about to eclipse the size of my last phone that is 2 years old! And that LG phone didn't have anything for several months. This phone already has bootloader bypass and root and a few roms going with more on the way. Maybe it's not as fast as Samsung devices that have millions upon millions of sales in a couple of days, but compared to many phones this is quite quick. Chill, it's coming. My last phone was slow for dev due to small sale base and only one carrier, but we still had official CM and MANY others. There will most certainly be no shortage of development here.

I can only speak to the verizon version, but it is great. I have not had a N4, but it is much much better than the Galaxy nexus. The only thing I have done s fix wi-fi tethering, and participate in the camera mod thread. I do not know what the Nexus 5 camera will be like, but the G2 is pretty close to the top like you said the luminas and the experia Z1 May do better. There is definitely room in the software for some improvements(like 4K recording), I think the hardware is there to support a little better photos, but still great stock.
As I have been saying in other threads I also have solid evidence that the G2 has USB 3.0, but with a funky non standard micro-USB 3.0 connector(backwards compatible to standard micro-USB 2.0). From teardown photos I have seen from nexus 5 it does not have a standard or funky USB 3.0 connector. (Sketch of connector attached) I have not found a funky plug to reach the extra pins and enable USB 3.0.
Like a lot of people I like a lot if the standard features of this phone.
Check the other forums comparing the G2 and Nexus 5, and the things we owners like about the phone as well.
According to rumors the release of the N5 is within a week, so you can just wait and see the confirmed specs.

Nice detail there! I'll wait to see if the N5 will be like!! :good:

So I have a Nexus 4 at the moment and I'm waiting for the nexus 5. I've been looking at the G2 and i must say it looks amazing, I'm just wondering what the G2 is actually like, is it really worth it? (I know you will be biased as its a g2 forum) I'm not fussed that the Nexus 5 will be cheaper blah blah. I want to know how the G2 is on a daily basis.
Also how's the development side of things for the international? Plenty of support and progress?

So was my HTC Incredible.
Thanks Devs. From my VZW G2.
I sold my nexus 4 for this phone as well.
I used the nexus for a few months and tried various roms, but I've never found "it".
"It" is the feeling I get when I buy something that suits me, LG g2, car, wife.
This phone is a keeper, I don't even want or need to flash a custom kernel/rom.
Edit: I was looking for the nexus 5 as well, but the camera/battery is not good enough for me and how I use my phone.
I personally don't see a reason to wait for the Nexus 5 (although I'm kinda waiting too just to see the official announcement before I pull the trigger on getting the G2) considering the G2 is so similar and even has better specs in a few key areas. I fail to see the fascination with Nexus devices considering this is Android and Android lets you do what you want, there are already plenty of closer to Aosp ROMs if you don't like the Lg skin and I'm sure the great developers will work as quickly as possible to get 4.4 onto the G2 once it is released. I could understand being confused about whether to get the G2 or some totally different device from a different manufacturer, but if the Nexus 5 is the main thing you're comparing to, the G2 is a nearly identical LG device with a better battery and camera so why make yourself hold out for the release of a lower spec'd device.

one thing for sure the G2 will be much more comfortable to hold. The shape of the N5 is not very comfortable to hold. My Optimus G was same shape and not comfortable to hold mind you it still is an amazing phone. Also battery on N5 does not look promising.
Oh and can i add that its now 12 am nd i still have 50% battery with normal use.....same use nd apps as my old s3 which i used to charge twice daily.....

I am also holding off on the G2 just to see what the Nexus 5 is offering for the following reasons.
1. No one knows if the leaks are 100% accurate, Google could surprise us.
2. I just moved to a new area where my current phone service BLOWS (Sprint). When I get the Nex5 or G2 I want to try both TMO & ATT, the Nex5 will work on both fully but from what I understand the TMO G2 is missing some LTE band (no idea if I need it)
3a. Can't hide the friggin soft keys on the G2 unless you root.
3b. Rooting trips some flag that gives LG an excuse not to fix your phone.
3c. No way to un-trip that flag that I've seen.
If any of my above reasons are wrong forgive me. I'm just going off of info I get in this forum and on Youtube.
Ok I've been debating this for a while talked to a couple people and asked in the nexus 5 threads. Just so I get a complete view id like to ask here as well. I have a 16 GB white nexus 5 in prefect condition and there a 32 GB lg g2 in perfect condition on craigslist that someone wants to trade for nexus 5. The problem is it's at&t but unlocked. Does that matter? Is it exactly the same on the inside as the T-Mobile version? It seems all at&t phones are worth less for some reason. Theyre always cheaper on places like eBay and craigslist. Is there any difference besides the logo? Also what are you guy's opinions on this? I contacted the person and it seems legit and they want to meet in public place so it's safe. Also the lg g2 has bigger battery, and slightly bigger screen and size isnt too different. I'm not worried about updates because of custom ROMs and I'm sure the g2 will get KitKat and at least one more version officially.
Please give me your opinions especially people who have both devices. Oh yeah and also which feels better build and how is g2 without a case? Is it fragile? Or is it solid and can survive falls? I'll probably use a case but would like to know. Thanks and maybe I'll be seeing you guys more later on if I decide to trade

i came from a note 3 to the g2. it has been perfect in every aspect for me including size and by far the most amazing battery life i've ever gotten on any phone. I too arent worried about updates because i only use aosp custom roms. The g2 is a fingerprint magnet so im not gonna lie about that and i wont know how it'll do in a fall but it seems pretty durable and should withstand a fall lets say from 3 feet or less. You wont be dissapointed at all. Hope i answered some of your questions

Alright thanks hoping to hear from a couple others as well. Do you think aosp ROMs will be around for it up to date for at least 2 more years? (I think it will but not sure as I haven't seen how active this section is). Also do you have att or T-Mobile version or any other? And what company do you use. My dad told me using an att phone on T-Mobile makes the data not work as well but I thought they were the same phone so I don't know if that makes sense. Thanks for the answer though. If you like it better than note 3 I'm sure I'll like it.

if battery is important to you then yes. No matter what the Nexus 5 fan boy will say or do, they will not beat that extra mAH, its like saying you can swim faster than michael phelps if you keep training for the rest of your life, genetics was built into him and thats what he was born to do.

Alright thanks battery is a big part but not major. I would like a bigger battery but it's not really needed. But the bigger battery, camera, and slightly bigger screen together are convincing.
But does anyone know about the T-Mobile/at&t "issue" I described? If that's not an actual problem then I think I'll trade.
Also do you guys think this is legit? It seems a little too good doesn't it? Especially since the other phone is 32 GB while mine is 16 GB. They claim there is no issues and it's in perfect condition. Are there any specific things I should look for because they said I could try it out and make sure everything is working.

its hard to predict how the developer support will be 2 years...
when you look for newest android stay with n5.
first i think the g2 is even more value (overall it feels more like an 600€+ phone) for the dollar euro than the n5. i got mine for 379€, the N5 would be 349€ and 399€ in stores here.
i absolutly love the tiny bezel. the screen just pops right out. compared to its display size, the device is relativ small and can be operated with one hand.
yes it is an fingerprint magnet. iam thinking of getting protection just because of that fact. until now i have kept it naked and even dropped it twice. i got lucky and it didnt land on the screen. but it did skid face first on the bathroom floor: got lucky, no scrachtes.
batterylife is really, really good. i also kinda like the lg stock rom. after optimization and heavy debloating and some mods to the notification bar and other xposed goodies i can resist flashing aosp. with the samsung device it was aosp day one always.
the ois camera, 24hz 192kbits audio playback and hardwarebutton on the back sets the phone apart from other phones. knockon/off also is a really nice feature i dont want to miss ever again.
after some getting used to the camera and the ips screen (came from amoled) it is a keeper for me. at least until the end of this year:good:

Thanks a lot. Yeah android version isn't too much of an issue. As long as theres at least one ROM with latest version like pa or cm or omni or slim. Any of those are great and hopefully they will support for a long time.
Now if anyone knows anything about at/tmobile "issues" I mentioned please tell me. Sorry for asking so much but that's really the main thing holding me back so far.
Sent from my white LG Nexus 5
If what I was saying didn't make sense about the issues I meant data compatibility. This explains it a little better. That's what I'm worried about because I use lycamobile which runs on T-Mobile towers. So will this issue be there if I get the at&t lg g2? https://t-mobile.jive-mobile.com/#jive-discussion?content=/api/core/v2/discussions/37961

Ok I got this one answered by looking in development thread and noticing that most ROMs show d800/801/etc so most support all versions
Now last question is the compatibility for data
Sent from my white LG Nexus 5
Can't speak on the rom/flashing aspect since I don't care about that stuff anymore...And while I do miss the build of the N5 (I dunno it just feels nice to hold) the G2 is soooo much better in obvious ways such as display and battery life. Battery life alone is the greatest reason to switch and was the reason I did so. There are also other reasons for the switch that you can read about or you may already know about...The built in remote control is nice to have and can help alleviate boredom if you're somewhere else
Ok thanks. I know the g2 is better in most ways but soft ware. The thing I need confirmation on is if anyone using an unlocked att d801 g2 with other companies like tmobile has data fully working. I heard it has issues sometimes. Or does it work alright as long as apns are correct?

Thanks I think I'm going to. I might trade but there's lots of brand new ones for 300-350. Where did you sell yours? Mine is in perfect condition because of the case and screen protector since first day and I'll be seelling those with it so I'd hope to get at least 350 (I have the 16 GB)

i sold mine on craigslist, here in the Seattle area, i had the 32gb model.
OK I've been convinced that I really want a g2 (maybe not right now). But I don't want to trade it. My nexus 5 is pretty amazing so I don't want to trade for a used phone. But if I can sell it for enough to buy a new g2 I'm going to. I'll have to tell the guy that I'm not going to trade. I feel kind of bad because he was pretty nice and waited for me to decide. But the phone doesn't come with all original stuff and I don't really feel confident in a phone used by someone else no matter how well I test it. I got the nexus 5 brand new and after a small RMA annoyance I got a fully working perfect one. So if I have a chance to get a new one I'll hopefully get it.

Hey guys,
I'm a long term android guy and I'm trying to figure out what my next phone will be. Right now I've got a Samsung Galaxy S4 sgh-i337 (AT&T variant) which I've had for a while. Don't get me wrong, I love the phone, but recently is been having a SIM card reader error (hardware problem with this model, nothing you can really do about it). Between that and the fact that I can't install custom ROMs besides ones based on the same kernel that comes with the Samsung OS, I'm thinking it's about time to retire this phone. The problem I'm having is that I don't want to spend a ton on a new phone, but I also don't want a piece of junk either. Things that matter to me:
Minimum of a snapdragon 800
Minimum 2GB RAM
Easily ROM-able and long term support
Android Lollipop
Excellent battery life
Good cellular range (S4 always has low bars)
From my research, the G2 hits all of these and I can get a new one (AT&T variant D800) for <$200 which is very appealing! The newer phones (galaxy s5/s6, HTC one M8/M9, LG G3) don't really seem too much better hardware wise than the G2 - no matter what the manufacturers want you to believe - so I've been eyeing this phone for a few weeks.
So tell me people, how does the G2 work on lollipop ROMs? How's the battery life and cell signal? Do you think people will be making ROMs for it for a while? And what should I know about ROMing this phone? (Like bugs, is the kernel/bootloader locked or replaceable on the AT&T D800?) What should I know?
Thanks in advance!
For the money i think you will like the g2. I use to have the att model when the g2 first came out. Now i have the tmobile variant. As long as you read up before rooting flashing custom roms then you shouldnt have a problem. Im totally stock and running lollipop and so far battery life seems the same as kit kat. Gotta give it a few more charges to see how it really does.

Ive also had an galaxy s4 for a year and decided to change my phone. I sold the galaxy s4 and bought an htc one m7 which i liked but not very much. (I prefered galaxy s4 camera quality). I looked for a good decent phone with a better camera than the s4. After 2 weeks, i sold the m7 and bought a LG G2 6 months ago which i still have.
The LG G2 is awsome for its price.
Pros:
Excellent camera,
Excellent battery life (1 full day or 3 if only in pocket)
Fast and still has decent hardware.
Double tap to wake feature,
CloudyG3 Rom (turns G2 to G3)
Cons:
Fat and glossy plastic make it sometimes siplery in hands.
I miss the S4 thickness. G2 + cover more fatness.
NO MICRO SD CARD SLOT!
Conclusion : I miss my galaxy s4 only because of its build quality and its tickness (more premium feeling). I hate on-screen buttons (navbar). the g2 is fragile and bigger. But the specs are awsome and i have a better camera now im looking forward to get a LG G3 or a galaxy S5 but ill just stick with the G2...

Battery life is excellent. I get 3 days from 1 charge. Custom ROMs and Kernels make it even better.
Cell signal is excellent, provided you don't mess with your device's integrity and flash random zip files everyday.

Yes, there will always be an LGG2 community here on XDA with active members. There are already plenty of ROMs to choose from made for the G2 so it's not a question of will there continually be new ROMs made, but what ROMs are currently available now and how well do they perform. I have no doubt new ROMs will be released by developers in the future for the G2.

That thread was extremely informative, thank you!
I've got to give this more thought. My ideal phone would be the Nexus 5 but with better battery life and a better camera. Rumor is that there might be a Nexus 5 2015 refresh later this year, but I'm still not going to want to spend more than ~$300, so I really don't know what I want to do. I feel kind of weird about buying another phone that's 2 years old, but realistically, the new stuff isn't (to my mind, anyway) much better. That extra gig of RAM and slightly faster processor aren't really going to make the phone feel like it's so much better.
I like the oneplus one, but I don't want a 5.5" screen, that's just too big.
