Hey guys,
I'm a long term android guy and I'm trying to figure out what my next phone will be. Right now I've got a Samsung Galaxy S4 sgh-i337 (AT&T variant) which I've had for a while. Don't get me wrong, I love the phone, but recently is been having a SIM card reader error (hardware problem with this model, nothing you can really do about it). Between that and the fact that I can't install custom ROMs besides ones based on the same kernel that comes with the Samsung OS, I'm thinking it's about time to retire this phone. The problem I'm having is that I don't want to spend a ton on a new phone, but I also don't want a piece of junk either. Things that matter to me:
Minimum of a snapdragon 800
Minimum 2GB RAM
Easily ROM-able and long term support
Android Lollipop
Excellent battery life
Good cellular range (S4 always has low bars)
From my research, the G2 hits all of these and I can get a new one (AT&T variant D800) for <$200 which is very appealing! The newer phones (galaxy s5/s6, HTC one M8/M9, LG G3) don't really seem too much better hardware wise than the G2 - no matter what the manufacturers want you to believe - so I've been eyeing this phone for a few weeks.
So tell me people, how does the G2 work on lollipop ROMs? How's the battery life and cell signal? Do you think people will be making ROMs for it for a while? And what should I know about ROMing this phone? (Like bugs, is the kernel/bootloader locked or replaceable on the AT&T D800?) What should I know?
Thanks in advance!
For the money i think you will like the g2. I use to have the att model when the g2 first came out. Now i have the tmobile variant. As long as you read up before rooting flashing custom roms then you shouldnt have a problem. Im totally stock and running lollipop and so far battery life seems the same as kit kat. Gotta give it a few more charges to see how it really does.

Ive also had an galaxy s4 for a year and decided to change my phone. I sold the galaxy s4 and bought an htc one m7 which i liked but not very much. (I prefered galaxy s4 camera quality). I looked for a good decent phone with a better camera than the s4. After 2 weeks, i sold the m7 and bought a LG G2 6 months ago which i still have.
The LG G2 is awsome for its price.
Pros:
Excellent camera,
Excellent battery life (1 full day or 3 if only in pocket)
Fast and still has decent hardware.
Double tap to wake feature,
CloudyG3 Rom (turns G2 to G3)
Cons:
Fat and glossy plastic make it sometimes siplery in hands.
I miss the S4 thickness. G2 + cover more fatness.
NO MICRO SD CARD SLOT!
Conclusion : I miss my galaxy s4 only because of its build quality and its tickness (more premium feeling). I hate on-screen buttons (navbar). the g2 is fragile and bigger. But the specs are awsome and i have a better camera now im looking forward to get a LG G3 or a galaxy S5 but ill just stick with the G2...

Battery life is excellent. I get 3 days from 1 charge. Custom ROMs and Kernels make it even better.
Cell signal is excellent, provided you don't mess with your device's integrity and flash random zip files everyday.

Yes, there will always be an LGG2 community here on XDA with active members. There are already plenty of ROMs to choose from made for the G2 so it's not a question of will there continually be new ROMs made, but what ROMs are currently available now and how well do they perform. I have no doubt new ROMs will be released by developers in the future for the G2.

That thread was extremely informative, thank you!
I've got to give this more thought. My ideal phone would be the Nexus 5 but with better battery life and a better camera. Rumor is that there might be a Nexus 5 2015 refresh later this year, but I'm still not going to want to spend more than ~$300, so I really don't know what I want to do. I feel kind of weird about buying another phone that's 2 years old, but realistically, the new stuff isn't (to my mind, anyway) much better. That extra gig of RAM and slightly faster processor aren't really going to make the phone feel like it's so much better.
I like the oneplus one, but I don't want a 5.5" screen, that's just too big.

Hi
I already own an HTC One but i'd like to get a Snapdragon 800 device and apparently the LG G2 is the best on the market right now. However, it seems like there is limited dev support for the G2, which is a critical issue for me. I plan to root and test new ROMs on the G2 (why else opt for such a powerful device if you don't plan to customize it to pieces) and i would also appreciate CM support and vanilla Android-based ROMs to get rid of the bloatware UI. But why is there a seemingly poor dev interest in this device? Is it due to the device being relatively new? Or is it due to LG's limited opensource support relative to Sony, HTC, etc? I just don't want to look back at this thread a few weeks from now and then regret my decision to buy the G2. Or is the Note 3 a better choice (its dev section is bristling with new ROMs, etc)? But i'd like an easily pocketable phone rather than a phablet or tablet. I also considered the Z1 as my new S800 device but its huge bezels are a turn-off for me. Maybe i should wait? I don't plan on waiting until 2014 though. :cyclops:
Dude forget the Z1 not only the body is huge for a 5'' screen but it's not even a 5'' screen because contrary to G2 the virtual buttons on screen are not transparent so it's like a 4.6'' usable

Have you checked the Android Development and carrier specific development forums for the G2 on XDA?
The phone has now been out for a whopping THREE WEEKS. Root, LOKI and TWRP were achieved within FIVE DAYS of release.
Sorry if I sound like Im venting but there are way too many threads questioning the phone because we dont have CM, 4.3, or KitKat yet.
And a lot of people (even me) who have come from a pure AOSP experience (like I have on my Gnex) are pretty darn satisfied with the phone as it is out of the box. Ive installed CleanROM mostly just for the debloating aspect, the UI remains virtually the same as stock.

+1000000 to this. I always chuckle when I see people who are smart enough to check out XDA forums to learn more about the hacking community of their phone of choice but yet don't seem to click on the Android Development carrier sub forums to gauge how Android development is happening. Its like these people expect a CM ROM to show up 2 days after the phone is released or else the hacking developer community is a failure. Threads like this that complain about the lack of Android development should be removed immediately.

Just ignore the working CM10.1 build located in the Android Development subforum for the LG G2, right?
Seriously guys, look around the forums and tell me if you really believe it isnt getting much dev attention.

It's an entitled world these days, my friend.
to OP: Development will pick up. As others have mentioned the phone has been out for only a hot minute. The world wasn't built on impatience and here we are getting impatient over a phone.
There are already a few Roms out. Even if there were 100s of Roms. The miniscule differences are laughable but people rage about a new rom. Just relax and wait. You also have the n5 coming out which should ramp up development.
I was torn between the G2 and a Nexus 5. I am so happy with my stock experience G2, I'm not bothered about the 5 any more. The G2 is a fantastic phone.
Dev activity seems to have doubled in the last week, with more people saying that they are waiting for their phones to arrive.
LG have already posted the source for the current roms. I think they may have learned from the Nexus 4 that a decent dev scene equals a very popular phone.

@op look at the AT&T Note 3 vs the AT&T G2 for example and tell me which one has the most support as of now. The G2 hasnt been out for thaf long and already has all the root, twrp, lokid plus 3 or 4 Roms if im not mistaken. This is great and itll get better with time. Gotta be patient. The G2 out of the box is beast and offers a lot of customization.

Are LG usually good about releasing Sources? I've pre-ordered the G2, but I'm still on the fence about actually wanting the new Nexus.
If devs can put out a decent AOSP/AOKP/etc ROM for this device, I'd rather go with the G2 with it's superior battery.

from what i heard, LG is very late and has a bad rep for ota updates? not too sure though
Dev support really won't be an issue from what I've seen.

Also if the rumors are true and the Nexus 5 is based on the G2 then the dev support will most likely explode even more. Porting KitKat and such to the G2 would be a breeze.

So I have a Nexus 4 at the moment and I'm waiting for the nexus 5. I've been looking at the G2 and i must say it looks amazing, I'm just wondering what the G2 is actually like, is it really worth it? (I know you will be biased as its a g2 forum) I'm not fussed that the Nexus 5 will be cheaper blah blah. I want to know how the G2 is on a daily basis.
Also how's the development side of things for the international? Plenty of support and progress?

Tons of people around here are gonna say it rocks. I'm one of them. Development it good everything else is great
I can only speak to the verizon version, but it is great. I have not had a N4, but it is much much better than the Galaxy nexus. The only thing I have done s fix wi-fi tethering, and participate in the camera mod thread. I do not know what the Nexus 5 camera will be like, but the G2 is pretty close to the top like you said the luminas and the experia Z1 May do better. There is definitely room in the software for some improvements(like 4K recording), I think the hardware is there to support a little better photos, but still great stock.
As I have been saying in other threads I also have solid evidence that the G2 has USB 3.0, but with a funky non standard micro-USB 3.0 connector(backwards compatible to standard micro-USB 2.0). From teardown photos I have seen from nexus 5 it does not have a standard or funky USB 3.0 connector. (Sketch of connector attached) I have not found a funky plug to reach the extra pins and enable USB 3.0.
Like a lot of people I like a lot if the standard features of this phone.
Check the other forums comparing the G2 and Nexus 5, and the things we owners like about the phone as well.
According to rumors the release of the N5 is within a week, so you can just wait and see the confirmed specs.

So was my HTC Incredible.
Thanks Devs. From my VZW G2.
I sold my nexus 4 for this phone as well.
I used the nexus for a few months and tried various roms, but I've never found "it".
"It" is the feeling I get when I buy something that suits me, LG g2, car, wife.
This phone is a keeper, I don't even want or need to flash a custom kernel/rom.
Edit: I was looking for the nexus 5 as well, but the camera/battery is not good enough for me and how I use my phone.
I personally don't see a reason to wait for the Nexus 5 (although I'm kinda waiting too just to see the official announcement before I pull the trigger on getting the G2) considering the G2 is so similar and even has better specs in a few key areas. I fail to see the fascination with Nexus devices considering this is Android and Android lets you do what you want, there are already plenty of closer to Aosp ROMs if you don't like the Lg skin and I'm sure the great developers will work as quickly as possible to get 4.4 onto the G2 once it is released. I could understand being confused about whether to get the G2 or some totally different device from a different manufacturer, but if the Nexus 5 is the main thing you're comparing to, the G2 is a nearly identical LG device with a better battery and camera so why make yourself hold out for the release of a lower spec'd device.

one thing for sure the G2 will be much more comfortable to hold. The shape of the N5 is not very comfortable to hold. My Optimus G was same shape and not comfortable to hold mind you it still is an amazing phone. Also battery on N5 does not look promising.

I am also holding off on the G2 just to see what the Nexus 5 is offering for the following reasons.
1. No one knows if the leaks are 100% accurate, Google could surprise us.
2. I just moved to a new area where my current phone service BLOWS (Sprint). When I get the Nex5 or G2 I want to try both TMO & ATT, the Nex5 will work on both fully but from what I understand the TMO G2 is missing some LTE band (no idea if I need it)
3a. Can't hide the friggin soft keys on the G2 unless you root.
3b. Rooting trips some flag that gives LG an excuse not to fix your phone.
3c. No way to un-trip that flag that I've seen.
If any of my above reasons are wrong forgive me. I'm just going off of info I get in this forum and on Youtube.
Im thinking about swapping my vzw Note 3 for a G2 as it seems like development is much more active on the G2.

Are custom kernels currently flashable on the Verizon LG G2 Variant at this point?

NICE! - At this point with Note 3, it does NOT look too good unfortunately for custom Kernels. I'm loosing faith.
Plus no Knox 0x1 crap to worry about..

Bootloader locked down tight and that Knox crap makes it even more difficult. I think they have safestrap, but I don't think much can be done with the kernel.

On the older firmwares you could use loki, but Sammy didn't like that so the next update patched the Loki exploit. Looks like the fix made its way to other flagship samsung phones likelike the note 3. Its bad, you can't even flash a previous firmware due to qfuse checks so these devices are locked down quite tight.

No that's okay, I'd rather ask here since we are on this topic and and discussion. You see we are on the topic so it's not a mistake to ask about the topic on hand otherwise there is never a need for a Q&A thread on XDA. As long as it pertains to the topic and doesn't skew off. Try again buddy :good:
Verizon Note 3 is currently Safestrap with TWRP only at this point.
with 1 custom rom on the vzw variant and it trips Knox to 0x1 - meaning voided warranty.
Knowing we can flash kernels on the G2 makes it a more attractive option than the Note 3.
I mean the n3 is a BEAST device, but the G2 just feels better in the hand and I dont use spen on it ever.
(although its useful and frequently used on the Note 10.1 2014)
I think a major issue with development right now is the vast number of devices currently on the market vs the amount of good devs to go around.

Lol, You sir made my day! And for that you have received my thanks :highfive:
I find it hilarious that some guy made a post in this section "complaining" about the "lack" of dev support
for the G2 when i pop in the vzw variant section and see like 10 roms currently available and ability to flash kernels,
Go check out the verizon note 3 original development forum, there are count them 2... yes TWO lousy threads
with like 900 posts and 850 of them are people nagging and whining about progress.. lol

I think people are forgetting that we have 7 variants of the G2 and because of that the dev support is pretty fragmented. One carrier has 3 roms another carrier thread has 12 roms. Its really more of a hit and miss. The dev support is not lacking in the least bit, at all. Its just the G2 has way too many variants so naturally the dev supports is going to be a bit scattered here and there.
Plus the G2 and Note3 are basically the same phone.
Why I picked the G2 over the Note3:
- No built in Wireless Charging. The Note 3 has a Wireless Charging backplate addon, but it adds thickness and prevents usage of the Feather cases.
- Too damn big. I really loved the Note3 and I wanted to buy it, but it destroys my hands. It's so top heavy that 1 handed use is impossible.
- No dev support. Biggest bummer. I initially thought it was due to being new, but found it was locked down tight. I heard there will be a developer edition that is unlocked if you want to pay full price for the device.
- I thought the SPen would be useful but thinking I'd probably end up on custom roms (or probably not with no dev) that the SPen would probably become useless.
- Note 3 was $200 more then the G2.
As far as Dev Support, lots are just preparing for 4.4. There are some big changes in 4.4 that are giving everyone fits. The devices that are currently getting ports are buggy and have graphical glitches. Plus most of the work is already done with them just branching off older custom roms/kernels.
Lots of dev groups don't have solid 4.4 setups yet or are not even finished with 4.3. AOKP is going to start from scratch. CM11 is just starting up. There isn't a whole lot of reason to start development on 4.3 roms when 4.4 was coming out. Now that 4.4 has been out, the devs want to get a stable build before adding devices to the mix.
Several of the CM and AOKP guys have G2s. The kernels are the important thing. If we can backport the N5 kernels then we'll have a long and updated lifespan.

^ Hearing this from one of our recognized developers adds credence to what im reading elsewhere. This is pretty ugly, could this be what the future holds for all flagship devices or any device in gerenal, and not just those named Samsung. Clearly OEM manufacturers are trying to inhibit the ability to modify what really belongs to the buyer in the end.

AGREED! 10000% Brotha.
I love the note 3 as well, but have the same beef with it too.
Its a weird phenomenon with the Note 3 when your holding it outside and a gust of wind comes
it feels like its going to sail right out of your hand, lol..
I thought I would use all the touchwiz stuff. but I havent touched any of it, again spen makes perfect sense on the 10.1 2014 tablet.
but it just dosent pan out well for me, my handwriting sucks as i have been typing since I was 6yrs old, the LAST thing I want to do is pick up a pen and start writing. on my credit card receipts its just a scribble,
I used spen 2 times, to cut out faces of people and enlarge them. and the novelty wore off.
The only beef i can find with the G2 is VZW,.. of course they just HAD to have thier own special variant with that tramp stamp and special back.
but thats easily overlooked as all i need is a good GLASS screen protector and i run the back naked.
Size.
The screen on the g2 is almost as big at the note 3, but just that c-hair small enough to fit your hand its right at that limit.

Yes the glass screen protectors have black/white areas that cover up the front logos. Look in the Accessories forum for the glass sp thread.

I am currently looking to sell my Note 3 for the G2 because I took at look at the development section here compared to the Verizon Note 3 and quite frankly...im EXTREMELY JEALOUS haha. Anyway if I sell my Note 3 and buy a G2 off contract will I be able to install custom recovery? Because I can't seem to find an up to date thread on the topic. Sorry if I'm not searching correctly. I believe the Verizon G2 just got the kit kat update if I'm not mistaken and I don't know if that will hinder the ability to do that. Again sorry for being ignorant I just want AOSP again so badly and the Note 3 has to be a jerk off and have a locked bootloader with no work around so yea lol. Thanks in advance!
I wouldn't! Come on. You've got a bigger screen, removable battery, expandable storage, and slightly better specs. It's a popular phone, let the dev community build up - it will build up, trust me on that.
While those may be true. I desire a pure stock android experience. One that can be had on the G2. Numerous devs have continually said the bootloader will more than likely never be unlocked. That means horrible touchwiz nonsense forever! Literally the only thing I would miss would be the expandable storage. The difference in specs will be 100% unnoticeable. Ill just have to put my music on google music but that's no biggie considering I have Unlimited data on Verizon.

Might I suggest you wait for the Galaxy S5 or the LG G3? We're a month away from their launch.
Edit: Well, maybe more than a month but it's not far away. Also, the Nexus 6 might be perfect for you. There are rumors about a possible June launch.
You are kidding right
Your are kidding Right ? Note 3 vs G2. I have the Tmobile LG-G2 rooted and coming from a galaxy S3 I miss it. I only did it because I had EMMC failure and my S3 motherboard died on my S3. So I just got this G2 for $450.00. I could not paid $700 for a Note 3 phone that is crazy . Oh yea I know what your thinking . But you could have paid it broken down on monthly payments. (still $750 BUCKS) Don't get me wrong This LG-G2 is GREAT , but 32Gigs internal memory come on. There is something special about having internal vs ext-sd memory . That my friend is that is SUCKS! the tmobile version does not have ext-sd slot, If it did then this phone would still only be 3 stars, The sound is low even with all the mods out there . what I am trying to tell you is Keep that Note 3 Rooted and Flash a new ROM on it .
Dang....After a bunch of g2 owners telling me this i will be holding out for something else. Haha. I guess my fun with running aosp and flashing kernels is sadly at an end I don't want to accept it! And I KNOW the s5 is going to be even more locked down. God knows if the verizon variant will even get root. I hate that they are doing this. It's ruining part of the reason I love android. The development and the community. Every phone I've owned up until this one has had a vast community on here where things were constantly getting made and developed. New roms new kernels. Now, I can look at the android development section, and then look at it a month later, and nothing will have changed. Makes me a little sad.
Not sure where you heard that the bootloader would *never* be unlocked - I wouldn't place bets on that. I'd definitely suggest that you either wait for the bootloader to get unlocked (I'm already seeing 4.4.2 ROMs on the note 3 xda, can't be too long) or you wait for the Galaxy S5. If it were me, I'd keep that Note 3 and do whatever possible to make the interface stock-like - use Nova Launcher, stuff like that - until your phone eventually sees some good AOSP goodies ported over.
I Didn't know where to put this thread so I am simply putting it here in general tab.
Do you guys think upgrading to LG v10 is a good idea?
thing sounds really cool except the processor (snappy 808) which is kinda making me think that its just not the time. Especially now that I know exynos chips are providing way better performance but I really like the features and all. Always have been a power user but ended up buying crappy devices. Every device had its down point somehow. Lg g3 has 2k too much for processor scenes and like that.
I don't want Knox so I don't wanna go down Samsung road if there is no development. After all XDA is what keeps devices newer even after 4 years :')
How many of you think/are considering that upgrading is a good idea?
They should wait with "Premium" device for new Snapdragons. Or atleast use 810 v2.0
That's why im waiting for 2016 flagships
Imagine how good the G5 will be, that's my next phone
The best time to upgrade to a newer device is at the beginning of a year. If you're thinking about buying a new device now, manufacturers are going to release their premium flagship devices in about 4 months.
This means that you'll be happy with a new phone now, but you'll want to swap it in 4 months. If you wait, you'll at least get a whole year on a really nice premium device, or if you're like me, 2 years so the upgrade actually feels like a big leap forward
Geme geme
Just Pre-Ordered the V10, Got the G3 on DAY 1 as well, so this will be a Leap Forward me...LOL

Knox is already in Lollipop..at least parts of it. Knox doesn't stop root or development. Locked bootloaders and DM-verity are what is killing Samsung Development. When the 2 biggest carriers in the US lock down their devices so as to make permanent root as of yet impossible, developers will leave for something else. Marshmallow will be even tougher. If you want a future proof device then you should look at Nexus devices. Otherwise wait and see how root and development turn out for the G5.
My lg g3 sucks at lollipop due to minor transition lags in notif tray and stuff, which i dont like. I will leave Lg asap
I am confuse about V10 position.
It is not a PRO like G PRO 2.
It is not a LG G5.
I will wait for LG G5.
I am waiting for lg v10.. This phone is the best phone till now
Exactly , it's a good idea ....indeed
It's upgrate the camera , memory, processor and the screen ...

I would like to check this one out but I have to wait on my company to test and approve the phone before I can request it (corporations...). My G3 is more stable, fast, and usable than ever on XenonHD 5.1.1...
Pisses me off royally that sprint isn't getting the V10, I want it bad!

Probably wait for the v20 and see what that looks like. G3 is still getting the job done for me.

After i bought my G3 i tested stock rom for about 10 Minutes and in the next 10 Minutes i saw CM booting it up - in my opinion so much better then stock isn´t comparable
But it´s your decision
Skipping this generation. Next year will upgrade

I was thinking seriously about getting the V10, and even went to the AT&T store to check one out. But considering the $700.00 price tag to buy one outright, I think I'll get the 32GB Moto X Pure Edition instead.
