I personally have no issues using the back buttons, But I hear alot of people do, how's your experience?

I have no issues with them being on the back, I do have issues with how they are placed though. I hit volume instead of power all the time.

Which version do you have? The verizon version has slightly smaller keys that I grant you are harder to find. My solution was to get a case, it makes it a world easier to find. Currently Im using a Incipio DualPro, havent had any mispresses since.

+1 (Verizon version) Any problems I had were solved with a case. Its really a non issue IMO. When the side bezel is cut in half again next year more manufactures may be forced to do the same. Who knows, we'll have to wait and see!
Have no issue them. Only time I use the back buttons is when I turn my phone on/off. I like that people can see the light on when your talking on the phone.

Only complaint I have is it's hard to adjust the volume when it's in a car dock.

My solution for that was a volume widget on the lockscreen when its charging.

tl;dr : back buttons are easy to get used to and the benefits far outweigh any negatives.
Wall of text incoming for the bored.
There are times when you can't access the back. There is no perfect way to interact with the phone in every circumstance with any phone but the back buttons in my opinion are a great idea, and what you gain far outweighs the benefits of buttons in the traditional locations. I hope LG sticks to their guns and keeps trying to improve the power and control button locations.
People can and should easily adapt, so if LG can come up with a better system they should go for that. I don't care if dimwits can't learn to push a button in a location that they are new to. LG gambled that people wouldn't be too put off by the change and I'm sure they have lost a number of sales due to that roll of the dice but if the placement of the buttons are what keep you from buying this phone, you don't deserve a phone this good.
Not saying this phone is perfect by any stretch but this is one off the best phones available at this time and has unique features you can't get on any other phone. Knock on, for example, is a killer app, in my opinion. When you go to other devices and start tapping on them expecting them to turn on you know you've discovered something special. Your mind tells you, "this phone is defective", when two taps doesn't turn it on when actually is just a Samsung S4!

My sentiments exactly. I find myself constantly tapping devices now, I even felt the compulsion to program doubletap to turn on with my Linux Netbook(Touchscreen).
I have switched to LMT and removed the buttons.
It's nice to have the added screen real estate and the pie buttons are much more conveniently placed

FWIW, I'm kind of digging the buttons on the back.
I'm liking them, it means you can hold the phone more firmly and on any edge without risk of pressing a button. When I first got it i was having issues feeling the difference between the camera/volume ridge and the power button but now it's pretty easy.
I love them. Lets me easily change volume on music and such while its in my pocket. Sure, you can do it with side buttons too, but still.
I also find it easier to reach these buttons than the traditional sidebuttons.
Only beef I have with them is from leaning against a fender when working on a car. It keeps turning the camera on and taking pocket pictures. Took exactly 100 pocket pictures today. I usually don't have my phone with me when I'm working in the garage but I basically can't now. Just a little annoying.
I think you can change your settings for smemo and camera to off, you could also turn the camera the opposite way in your pants so the buttons are facing the flesh of your leg. I doubt your flesh is hard enough to allow for a button to be pushed very often, if at all. A case would also help with this problem you're having.

I liked the idea of the back buttons, even before I purchased or knew much about the phone. it gives the phone symmetry, physically and visually. I understood the logic behind the design, and even if you can't get used to them, it's definitely NOT A DEAL-BREAKER that so many reviewers emphasize...which is sad.

Nah, I just shouldn't be posting at 3 am in the morning But I actually did have problems reaching the soft keys
I like that the keys are back there. But what I like even more about this phone is that I rarely have to use them. The quirky tap on/off works well enough to be useful, and the buttons on the back are perfect.

I didn't think the back keys were bad when I bought the phone, but they have slowly become very annoying and I would rather have not had them. When in my pocket the phone goes on all the time, when I sit it seems to apply a little pressure on the phone because it's a larger phone, and that presses the power button. Also when I have it in my pocket any light pressure on the volume keys will activate them, it's annoying while at the gym listening to music. Many times when I simply pick it up I'll lightly touch the power button and it turns on, the knock on feature also is kind of easy to accidentally activate just picking the phone up and handling it. It's also impossible to use the keys while the phone is in its car cradle.
Don't get me wrong, I love this phone. I have Cyanogenmod 10.2 on it and overall it's a beast, I definitely love it. But I think the rear buttons were a mistake and it would have crossed over from 99% to 100% if it had regular buttons IMO.
I love them. They feel natural and other phones no longer do.
I even use the power button instead of knock knock sometimes.

Does anyone find it annoying that the bootom back, home and search keys do not stay lit up?
I've been looking for a setting that would at least allow it to be dimmed but thats been a no go. I just find it hard to find the buttons with no visual cue nor any physical at that, It almost feels as if Im guessing the location.

Mine don't stay lit up. But coming from a Samsung Fascinate which also has lighting time-out issues, I just sort of waved my hands at it...
They will light back up once you touch one, so you could just run your finger over the search key since that has the least chance of knocking you out of wherever you are...
I never have problems finding the buttons at night. I actually like that they turn off. Makes the phone look cleaner if your using it in the dark.

Agree, I've not had an issue finding them when not lit either. Doesn't bother me at all.
The keys lot staying lit is a Samsung thing. They do the same on the Galaxy S phones like the Epic, Captivate. It was annoying on those phones and yes it is annoying on this phone as well. Yes I agree they should be lit all on the time.

Return policy is 14 days I believe.
I actually love the unlock location. The finger print scanner works terrifically for me.
The screen is great for a pentile and much much much better than the rgbg layout. I only notice any type of aliasing in a few places (battery on notification tray for one.)

How's the location of the volume rockers? How'd you feel about using those to wake the device? I use widgetlocker on my Inspire and I will on the atrix when I pick it up. It allows you to wake the device with any hardware button ("easy wake" in settings). And a nice set of ways to customize your lockscreen. Or you can set it up to look exactly stock, as I've seen the motorola froyo lockscreen as an option.

Yea. Absolutely hate the power button location. Thanks for the heads up on widget locker. Now using my volume buttons to wake. Much better.
I love the placement of the button. If you put the phone upside down in your pocket, then you can wake it up and then swipe your finger to unlock it while you're still taking it from your pocket 8)
Count me in the group that hates how hard it is to press the power button! Really, really don't like how difficult it is and how much pressure it takes to depress that button.
I love the fingerprint scanner functionality, though.

Exactly. It's perfect for me to hold one handed and unlock easily with fingerprint reader. I just got mine this morning, but haven't needed more than a single swipe so far. I find it easier than using the standard slider as I can keep a grip on the phone well while unlocking. I didn't like the thumb stretch to unlock on larger devices as I actually felt like I could drop it.

Actually if it was bought at a COR store the return policy is 30 days with a $35 restocking fee.
I think placement is great, but the force needed is what makes it awkward. Once on, it is so easy to swipe a finger to unlock.
I'm already used to it.
As with everything, mess around with it enough and it will become second nature.
Love the finger print scanner too. That should piss the wife off.

Button does seem awkward. would like it on the side but I guess it would get either the lefty or righty upset (depending on which side you put it). Which it would just turn on with a swipe rather than pressing and swiping. And maybe a click so you know when you've pressed hard enough.
I tried it out in store and loved it. A lot of my VZW friends have the Droid 2, with its tiny, hard-to-press power button, and was concerned I would be forced to throw the phone out the window if I had a button like this. This is easily the softest, easiest, largest on button I've ever seen on a phone.

I like it. I have large hands, and have no problem. I feel the button was placed in the center to allow for index finger swiping of either the right of left hand... pretty good design choice if you ask me. I can see how reaching it while gripping the phone in one hand could be tough if your hands are small though.
EDIT: Not to be an annoying fanboy, but the power button on the inspire irked me a lot. it was almost flush with the body of the phone, and at a slight angle that you almost had to wrap your finger around the top of the device to feel it. The worst part is that it provided NO indication you were actually touching it. It was just a feeling that feels like, "this will NOT work 6 months from now." I know HTC makes great stuff - but I was relieved when I first touched my atrix and felt an ever so slight 'click' from the button.
Thanks for the Widget Locker recommendation, the placement is awful! I have my phone on my desk flat a lot and it will go to sleep, it requires me to pick the phone up wth two hands to unlock it. Its a pain in the arse.
I was curious whether the buttons are easy to trigger by accident.
On my Nexus S and the Focus, there is a subtle upward curve at the bottom of the phone. This small lip seems to prevent a lot of accidental presses of the capacitive buttons.
In my experiences with a completely flat face phone (the HD7), accidentally pressing the capqcitive buttons was extremely common and annoying. I like the looks of the Omnia 7 more than the Focus, but if it leads to similar problems as the HD7 (always pressing the buttons by accident) then I'd rather go with the focus.
For me that's one of the most annoying things about the phone. I hit the search button all the time.. But some say there will be a firmware update to fix that.

That's exactly what used to happen to me with my HD7. When I held the phone part of my thumb would be on the bezel and it would hit the search button. Also, when I held the phone in landscape my finger would also hit it.
With the Nexus S I don't run into this problem because the bottom is curved a bit. I've also played with the Focus a bit and it seems to have this slight curve at the bottom as well.

I bought this beast a couple of days ago and I instantly noticed that the home button was a bit wiggly if I tried hard to make it wiggle. Needless to say I ran to the web and found that may others have been having the same issue but its not a deal breaker in any way. I have come to terms with it and it no longer bothers me.
What I also noticed was that the volume buttons are quite loose and shake quite a bit if I move them around with my finger. I can also hear them rattling a little bit if I shake the phone and if it vibrates there is a slight sound. Is this also standard with all N3's or are my volume rockers a one off case?
I am under a replacement warranty and getting a new piece should be no issue, but if this volume issue is a common one then I wont bother as everything else is working perfectly and I don't want to risk running into different problems with another N3.

Not seen any issues regarding Volume buttons being dodgy, only the home button. (only a small percentage tho) - Guess you just got a lemon unit, it does happen from time to time with any hardware.
I've got no problems on the home button or the volume buttons or the power button. Once you put a case on it you won't notice if it's just minor. But if it's bad, is get it changed. ..?

At first when I learned that the G5 was going to be released without the rear volume keys I was fairly disturbed, it almost made me switch to a different manufacturer. Now, after having used the G5 for a little more than month I think there's a fairly good argument for moving the volume keys once you throw the wide angle camera into the mix.
If you use the wide angle camera your finger or part of your hand would always be in the shot if the volume down key was on the back and used as the shutter. Try it out for yourself, place your finger where the volume keys would be while using the camera - it is possible to get your hand out of the way, but it would be pretty persnickety day to day.
I suppose they could have moved the key cluster further down the phone, but then you lose the ergonomic aspects of it. Conversely, you could move the camera up, but there are likely physical packaging constraints in that direction.
So, I get it LG. Still makes me sad though, maybe on the G6?

The only reason I liked the volume buttons on the back was because I hate seeing them stick out from the side. I know some people have complained about how hard it is to find the buttons by feel but I like the ever so slightly raised buttons on the side.
I really miss the side buttons. Coming from the G3 after 2 years it's hard to get used to again. At least the power button is still on the back.
Coming from a G2 yes I do miss the rear volume buttons, had to disable the shortcut keys for the camera on the G5. Kept taking photos while its placed in the cup holder.
It's hard to re-adapt to keys on the side - similarly once you have knock-on/off it's hard to use a device without it. LG really has some nice ideas, they need to work on execution.
If they had moved the volume rocker to the right side, I would miss them on the back. But since I hold the phone with my left hand most the time, they are perfect on the left.

Not in the slightest. I'd always hit them by accident. Now when I reach back there I know what I'm pressing.

Hate them on the side, but it does make more sense if you use it to take photos , especially with the wide angle lens. I don't like the feeling of the side buttons, but a case solved it completely.
They left the power button on the back, I wish they left the volume keys too.
Took a little getting used to having used the G2 for so long but it dont bother me anymore, at least we have the fingerprint scanner on the back, makes unlocking a breeze, never used to use a lock screen with the G2 just because i was to lazy to input a sequence/pin. With the G5 my finger naturally seems to fall in place with the fingerprint scanner as i pick my device up to support support.

This might be one of my only disappointments in the physical design of this phone. As I am an avid user of emulators (PSX, PSP, Dolphin) I often have my phone mounted on a Gamepad. With the old volume keys, access was much easier. unfortunately, some of the emulators do not provide a reverse landscape option and my volume roller is tucked near the top of the controller, making access a little more difficult. Does it deter my interest in the phone? Hardly, if any. However, I also have a phone mount for my road bike (haven't jumped on board with the GoPro crowd just yet), and this particular mount often reaches the volume down key if I opt to center the phone on the mount. Otherwise, I am fearful of the phone falling out of the mount due to me having to clip closer to the bottom of the phone.
Now that I have vented-- Overall, I am very pleased with the rest of the design, as well as the potential of the modular aspect (confident a PS Vitaesque type controller mount will become available at some point). I am also highly satisfied with the speed and performance, as well as compatibility, with each emulator I have used. Overall 9.5/10 from me. :good:
I fully agree. If there is some reason for not putting them on the back that is related to the camera, please fix it. Never once during the time I owned the G4 did I make any significant, accidental changes to the volume. WIth the G5 it is always happening.
LG....please bring back the rear volume buttons.
