You ain't gonna believe this.... - Acer Iconia A500

Wow... what a wild 48 hours... ok, it all started wed night. I came home from working the night shift, where I use my tablet in my truck instead of hauling around my laptop. I noticed it running like a hog so I rebooted it. It was rooted, unlocked, and all that jazz.. been through just about every rom ics and up. Never any real problems... until wed night. It got stuck on the Acer logo. Well, after much reading, and several tool downloads, for the life of me I couldn't get the thing to work. I was thinking it was a hard ware issue. I am expecting a pre paid label from Acer to send it in, even though it was out of warranty. I really had given up. I was using the tdv4 repair tool and it kept hanging a quarter way in. I noticed though, my pc wasn't communicating properly with the tab. I followed the link somewhere in here to Acers site, but originally it threw mw off because it was in German..lol Finally, I gave it one more chance, and found a little flag down at the bottom of the website to change the language... go figure... lol I downloaded and installed the correct drivers, and what do you know... instant success. Now, here's what you are not gonna believe. lol Right at the last moment, after running the tool, I had to hold the power button down for 5 seconds to get it out of apx mode. I have done this hundred's of times, especially while I was putting it into apx mode these past few days trying to fix it. Well, either way, I decided to boot right into recovery, which it did, but right at that moment, the power switch decides to break. No more click. Stuck in recovery, which actually I was overjoyed to see. But, I couldn't reboot or anything since the dam button decides to break, after all that crap I went through to resurrect it.. lol So, I then proceed to You Tube, learn how to crack this thing open with a guitar pick, inspect the power switch, which was barely hanging on. By the grace of God, I was able to click the button one last time to restart it..lol then the internal button decides to fall off.. lol. So, I am up and running Honey Comb, with a broken power button. I guess plugging it up to the charger should at least get it turned on for me. I am thinking of calling Acer back, and I guess modifying my repair ticket to a power button repair.. lol so, moral to the story? Get the dam right drivers so you don't have to put it into apx mode a thousand times. I think I just plain wore it out.. lol but I'm up and running. I just want to thank everyone involved in writing these programs, because I was basically sol. I hope you all find this humorous as well as educating.

Well, you can repair the button/switch by opening up the tablet, but you knew that, refixing the button with a cable tie, glue/epoxy, crack out the soldering iron and actually soldering it in properly - probably do a better job than Acer.:good:

I don't know..I'm kinda glad to jusr have it back..no more flashing roms though. .unless I can get a touch recovery installed...

I had the same problem...So I tried to glue it and stuff....and then I tried to solder it but it short circuited. So I found an old and small mouse that I didn't use.....drilled a hole in my tablet...connected the button to the motherboard with some wires...and use that as a power button...lol.....I'm done with this tablet.....even my power button fell off.....Now I have to glue it back on.......

I took it apart, was kinda fun actually... And took the motherboard and power button to a tech shop. They soldered it back on for 50 bucks, hopefully correctly. I will pick it up Monday when I get back in town and reassemble it, maybe it'll work. I just didn't have the tools to do it correct, would a cost 50 bucks for a super small soldering iron most likely..lol..if that doesn't fix it, I guess I'll be getting a new tab. Thinking about an Asus transformer prime..

Which isn't really new..but much more robust than the a500.

Well, I got the motherboard back, with the resoldered power button and slapped it back in..and its fixed for 50 bucks. Working like a champ. I just need to flash an ICS bootloader and get back up to speed, I'm not too sure about HC..

Hermes hits toilet

OK, it happened. It was powered on, splashed, went under for about 3 seconds and I pulled it out. I immediately pulled the battery and set it out to dry. so now 24 hours later I power it up and .... well the lcd is toast. I can heat everything power up and navigate blindly somewhat. I open the phone and then I hear it dialing numbers randomly.
OK, that is all I can figure out so far. The question is do you guys think it is worth trying to replace the lcd and see if that fixes the majority of the problems or a waste of time?
In the mean time I have ordered a tilt/8925 or whatever they are calling it now.
Ouch...some users say that you need to open it up and clean it with some solution to get rid of the stuff that the water puts on there. I've always been paranoid about that (PDA is the new newpaper in the can...).
Its fairly easy to open, just make sure you download the guides(in wiki under htc service manual). Its a HELL of a lot EASIER if you also have the number 6 torque key... Once you do it you'll see its fairly robust and takes an awful lot of force to break., just follow the steps one at a time and TAKE YOUR TIME cos theres no first prize for flying through the disassembly and finding you forgot to put something back or missed a screw.
Cheers...
Steelpreacher;
Just as a side note; my 8525 has hit water twice! The first time it fell into my garden pond; just barely hit the water when I caught it but it did get wet. After doing 'all the right things', I was in the same boat as you--no lcd; could navigate blindly. Took it apart somewhat and left it open. When I came back to it about 3 weeks later, it was alive and well! Screen was fine and all the keys worked.
If you do buy another phone as I did, keep the other around as a spare and check it again in a month or so. It may surprise you!
I wounder if you use it as toilet paper or what.
Selling?
Would you like to sell it? Coming back from all that damage may be pricy.

RMA Mess

Just a story here, I RMAed my TF about a week and a half ago for like 8 dead pixels (just bought it at the end of August) and just got it back today. Went to go nvflash it so I could have root back, etc etc., and when it booted up (came back at 91%) I noticed it wasn't charging. I tried flashing a custom kernel, still not charging. Thought that was weird, so tried nvflashing again, except nvflashing wouldn't work. Thing was, the nvflash had had some trouble the first time, because I was doing it on my husband's computer (mine like, exploded yesterday, some ArchLinux update did NOT like me) and it kept saying "could not connect to any USB devices." I didn't think much of it when it finally worked because he said his had done that before, but in retrospect, must have been related to the charging problem.
Anyway, at this point I was pretty crabby, because I don't really understand how I RMAed my perfectly functioning TF (with slightly defective screen) and I now have a completely non-functioning TF with a perfect screen. (I guess they fixed the problem?) WTF were they even messing with the USB port for anyway? Anyway, I never was able to nvflash it back to stock, except I did manage to get it to work finally by holding the USB cable at its base next to the TF carefully (and before anyone says it's the cable, tried several, it is not) but then it interrupted halfway through and would not restart, and I'm pretty sure the tablet is a brick. Could someone correct me if I'm wrong - is there a way to restart the nvflash process if it has been interrupted partway through?
Either way, just thought I'd share this nightmare. I'm still pretty irritated with Asus, which is saying something, because I've always been kind of an Asus fangirl.
you did not mention if is still not charging . If so could be the small switch inside. Search for not charging as there are several threads on opening TF and finding switch. If bat gets too low can effect flashing.
The battery was at about 88% when I flashed - now the TF won't do anything at all, including start the nvflash process over again. Terminal just throws an error and says something about not being able to restart because end point was not reached. (Not by the computer) I'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with having enough charge, it just won't connect properly.
Like I said though, doesn't matter much now, because the TF won't do anything. Won't go into APX mode or boot. I assume this is because the nvflash process interrupted halfway through. It won't let me restart it - get the error I mentioned. I assume I'm screwed, but was wondering if anyone knew a way to get it going again. I thought it was pretty impossible to brick a TF (like a Droid X) but I've never seen an nvflash (or an SBF) interrupted halfway through.
Edit: and yeah I have no idea if it'd charge like this or not, but somehow I doubt it Firmware = poof.

do you know which RMA facility it was shipped too? ive heard horror stories about the texas facility. just curious oh and i hope you get it fixed
I have a ASUS G73 notebook that I had to RMA like a year ago for screen problems. It went to some place in Indiana. When I got it back it had an LCD with a deep gouge in it as if someone had taken a knife to it. So yeah who knows what the deal is with the companies ASUS outsources repair to.
Was indeed Texas. Gave them a call and the guy was like "Derp we think something might be wrong with the battery" and had me try turning it on, blah blah. Am shipping it back tomorrow. I don't feel particularly bad, since it wasn't my screwup, and it's not like I was a dumbass and was like I WILL FLASH AT 3% BATTERY LOLZ. There's clearly something messed up somehow with the connectors.
Anyway, I hope that it gets resolved soon. Being without it really sucks for school. I'm sure its just going to get there and they're not going to be able to turn it on either, no matter what they try. Makes me wish I would have just stuck with the dead pixels though, because I suppose if they do replace it, I'll end up with a B9O. :/
Edit: Thanks for commiserating with me anyway, guys - helps me feel a little better!

My coworker and I both had to RMA the dock to the TX facility and both docks came back with problems. I sent it back there yet another time but his was sent to CA. The turnaround time was amazing but the quality... not so much. It's on its way back to me though and tomorrow I'll know what they did this time.

Worst (stupid) mistakes you've done with evo

I was watching tv when i noticed my evo wasn charged(even though i plugged it in for like 1hr.) and i though it might be broken charger since its really old, but didnt know the wall port was malfunctioning
so i decided to wipe battery stats and charge it with pc, as im booting into recovery im cleaning my screen, wiping it with my shirt.I got distracted for bit(stupid TV) that when i look down to the phone , it had already booted and since i have touch recovery, lucky me had partitioned sd card accidently!!!!!!
at first i pressed back key then power button cus i had no idea what that meant, but it compleated . so i power on the phone when i found out what partinioned meant by lookin at my homescree , i went into file explorer and everything was gone, F*CKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK. And i have no idea if i can ever get it back DAMNN
so have u guys done something stupid like thatwiht your phone???please share lol , cus i guess i dont want to feel like the only dumbass lol
p.s.
if somone has done something similar and got files back, HELP MEE
I bought one.

Back when GB came out, I unrooted, S-ON'ed, and took the OTA like a lot of people did and lost root for months. In my defense though, this is my first Android phone and it was the first OTA since I had rooted and I didn't know the dangers of taking OTA's and patched bootloaders, etc. Lesson learned.

I have made many mistakes, ive probably bricked my phone a dozen times. I ****ed up my charger port, due to always having it on the charger and then tripping over the cord so many times, so the port no longer works. And I broke all of the hard clips on the exoskeleton on my seideo case.
i kno i can prolly find the files on my pc, but im just tripping over the titaniumbackup folder cus ive used sd recover software but it finds folders with weird names
i still cant believe that out off all the options, i ended up pressing sd partition.
touch recovery doesnt sound so cool after this.. lol
My worst thing was opening this thread.
Lol just kidding. My worst thing was stressing over sprint giving me a refurb when my USB port got loose so I sent it to HTC and got one anyway. they were smart enough to keep my original housing though.

i haven't really done anything terribly stupid with it. i almost dropped it in a puddle once... it slipped out of my hand while i was texting in the rain.. ok well, that's stupid. anyways, as it fell, i kicked it onto the sidewalk before it hit the water. thank god i didn't break the screen, i kicked it really ****ing hard. i was more worried about it getting wet than replacing the screen since thats cheaply fixable. anyways, this phone's been great. the build quality, though not fantastic, is a lot better than my previous smartphones. these things are still new, they're still working out all the kinks i'm sure.

The worst mistakes I've done with my EVO is drop it a few times on accident. And I have a habit of trying to get up while the phone is charging. And accidently trip on the cord and the phone goes flying haha. The only damage to the phone is right next to the sprint logo is a babe scuff mark and the case is chipped a little. Oh and when turning on the phone it makes this clicking noise

Toilet
I dropped mine in a toilet once because I was using it while taking a piss and then tried to zip up my fly with the hand that was holding it. Yeahhh not one of my best moments. Anyways, after a day in rice, it's worked fine ever since.
Worst thing I did with my evo4g is trade it+$60 for a evo3d with the 1.5 hboot. :banghead:
Wiped sd card on accident instead of format/system. Lost my restore points and ...everything else. Luckily i put my pics on the computer every once in a while.
Yea.....
Worse thing I did was, during an alcohol-fueled night out, try to plug my phone into the car charger. (I was in the passenger seat, not driving) This would have been perfectly fine, had the port I was trying to force my plug into not been the mHDMI out port. Now I no longer have HDMI Out as the little white thing on the inside is busted.
Glad I didn't drop my phone in my drink like my bud did that same night lol
Worst thing i did was keep my evo for 2 weeks after i got an et4g cuz i didnt wanna give it up now i dont even wanna touch it it feels so slow and the screen just looks dirty

Worst thing i've done with my Evo(aside from the standard cycle of breaking/fixing software-wise) would be dropping it off my motorcycle at 40 mph. Thank God for Otterbox cases and riding in the right-hand lane!
Hey,
I got to college early one day and had to take a stop at the rest room, so I put my back pack down and there was this little soap tray on the sink and I put my phone on that. I am taking care of business and I hear my phone drop. I thought nothing of it I was like Il get it out of the sink later. But then I realized it the sink had an auto sensor! I honestly how no idea how on earth it didnt go off when my phone fell in, and I had no idea how the heck I was going to get it out. so I just did a ninja grab and pulled it out and luckily it didnt go off but gosh it scared the crap out of me lol
Stevo
flashed nv items, but you know that already. dont you?
Broke my 4G without a Wimax key backup
:/
All I can say is, be sure to secure your vids and pics before coming home from out of town work and letting your girlfriend mess with your phone.

In the process of trying to help someone fix their device, looking for an ENG build I decided to download and install the Pre-Release ROM for the EVO. The thing had an HBOOT version of 0.68 (which I'd never even heard of before), and it was an nb0 file, not an img file. Me, of course, being completely fearless and looking forward to a challenge decided to try and flash the thing, and guess what? it flashed successfully. I figured that if it wasn't compatible, it would error out, so I was feeling pretty comfortable, until I tried rebooting my bootloader. The device turned on, but nothing. Just a backlit, blank screen. My splash screen was gone. My bootloader was gone. Though, the phone does boot up, and I hear a startup animation sound, and several notification-type sounds. However, the device is no longer recognized by a computer, and thus I can't access adb or fastboot.
So, I'm stuck with a bricked device, waiting & hoping that a refurb becomes available soon. In the meantime, my only device is my old AT&T Tilt 2, which, of course, has no service. I've been specding the last day try to find a way to make phone calls from it using Google Voice, and I've come pretty close actually.
You never realize how much you appreciate your device until you kill it. I just hope no one's been trying to call me . . . .

Shift touchscreen issue.

I noticed tonight that my touchscreen stops working when I slide the keyboard all the way out. It looks like when you slide it, when it gets about 1/2 way, the lights under the touch keys (home, search, etc) turn off, then 3/4 of the way out, they come back on, but you can't touch anything on the screen. No scrolling, no selecting, nothing. When you start to close it, the lights turn off 3/4 of the way open, then 1/2 the way open they turn on and the touch screen starts working again.
I've been watching videos on how to replace the digitizer and they look easy enough for me to do, but is it really the digitizer if it is working when the phone is closed? This sounds more like a loose cable, eight? Anyone else have this happen?
That does sound more like the flex cable

Sounds like it's most likely the Flex Cable. Which is easy enough to change. They usually don't just come loose. Has been know to happen, but it's rare. You can repair it yourself, you just have to have the proper tools. If you do attempt it, be sure to take your time. You can pick the Flex Cable / Tool Kit up on Ebay, or Amazon fairly cheaply.

That's very true. There is a chance you can damage, or even "Brick" the device if you don't know what your doing. I've changed about about five already. The first one took forever, I was so nervous. But after about the third one it was all good . Same with the digitizers, first one is like Ahhh . After about the 10th one it's not that scary. No I do not damage my phone that often. Just know a lot of people who do. That also do not have TEP Insurance.

Ok, in the immortal words of Eminem, "I'm not afraid." Or wasn't, at least. I took it apart tonight and yep, the flex cable is broken. Taking it apart made it worse and I've lost my earpiece. The good news is the touch screen works while the keyboard is slid out... But it doesn't with it in. lol
I did find some on ebay, but does anyone know of a place that sells the sliding mechanism? Mine is pretty sloppy and I'd like to fix that while I have it open to replace the cable.
Your best bet is going to be a damaged Shift. I don't know of any place that sells just the parts. But I would still hunt around on the net. Maybe check Amazon, or Craigslist.

I mean nobody disrespect I am just as intrigued by taking things apart and just as satisfied with self repair as the next tech guy, but you don't even need to have TEP to get a shift with a broken flex cable replaced. This is a warranty issue. By no fault of yours, the phone is broken. Sprint replaces these without push back, I'm on my 3rd shift. Now that you've opened it though, you may be out of luck.

You can always tell them you took it to a third party store to get looked at.
It was out of warranty. I already tried the warranty route.
Anyway, got the cable today, put it in and the jawbone connector for the LCD is jacked up. It won't go all the way in no matter what you do. So I put the old one back in and now the touch screen is completely gone.
My wife called sprint while I was messing with it cause she wanted to see if there were any repair stores that had parts and they offered me an early upgrade. $105 bucks and I get up to a $150 discount as long as I re-up for 2 years. Since I'm pretty happy with Sprint, this is probably a win-win situation for me to do it, so I did.
Now I just have to decide... Moto Photo, Nexus 4g, or Samsung Galaxy 2. Any opinions?
*edit: I use CM7 on my shift and would like to continue to use CM7, I don't NEED CM9, but the option would be nice.

Ok, didn't want to clutter things up and start a new thread so I'm gonna hijack this one. Hope thats ok.
I've been having troubles with my touch sceen the last few weeks and its very sporadic. So first issue it just simply stops responding all together. Like for instance i go to pull notification bar down and it stops part way down and i cant slide it up or down nor do the home back keys work. I have to hit power button to lock then hit power button and unlock then all is fine for awhile. And to be clear i dont have to power it off, just lock it. Another instance I'll be browsing the web and i go to scroll down it starts acting goofy. As if i got 2 fingers on the sceen trying too pinch to zoom when i clearly dont. Another silly thing happens where it acts like some one is remotely using my phone. For instance I unlock my phone and then it just hitting buttons. It's actually made a phone call for me before. Also happens when browsing or anything else.
I run miui build 112300 with sparks patch. I have ran this rom for a very long time so something tells me it aint the rom. I really dont remember what I've installed lately so don't know if an app would be causing this. Something tells me its a hardware issue but i was hoping to get some suggestions before flash something new or worse running the ruu to stock. Also, i dont think it would be the flex cable because it happens mostly without the keyboard out. Plus i rarely use my keyboard, although I'm using it right now.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

If not, time to take it to Sprint.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

The first thing you can try is the latest Radio and Touchscreen Firmware HERE. If that does not work and the screen is still acting strange I would RUU back to Stock Unrooted. See if that resolves the issue. If not it's time to take it back to Sprint.
OK, thanks for the suggestions. Just flashed the new firmware. Like I said it was very sporadic so time will tell. Hopefully this works cause it's been a long time since I rooted my phone and I'd hate to unroot it.

seems like a brick device head over to dev section and look for recovery option for brick device see if it helps
Do this, use a paper clip, press and hold the pinhole reset, then press and hold PWR (both). After 5 seconds, release PRW, then 1 second later release pinhole.
What you should have, is a black display with a lit PWR lite. This is APX mode
Technically, you may get out of this, by running an RUUs, and using the tablet serial number when prompted. My Mate the other day used his on the 501.
If you have to get a real UID, then you will need to learn a little Linux.
Technically, it's about the worst brick you can get, but fortunately the 50x is pretty bullet proof.
I would try by using TD's V4 Rollback. I have it on my server space here http://d-h.st/0x7

Well, if my steps got 0 results, it ain't looking good mate.
You can try Holding PWR, Vol-, and cycle the rotation lock switch left and right several times until you see text about "erasing user data" appear on the display.
If you don't get any response, then it's a hardware issue. Because the previous 2 tricks should get a response out of the tab.
You should probably pop the back cover off, and check for loose connections or obvious signs of damage. Could be some bonehead plugged in the wrong charger, and cooked some componants.
You can find lots of you tube video breakdown for the 500 and 501. They're pretty much the same as far as taking apart.
If you get no results, then looks like E-Bay for parts. Pretty good market for them.
Sorry I couldn't help you more.

OK everyone. Who cares I have fixed my tablet. All by myself lol.. well I took your advice and I popped it open and looked over everything I took off the battery and "checked" it. I smelled for anything burned or like a bad smell ( don't judge me ) I keep looking nothing. Well I see that the power button is slightly off a 90°angle which its supposed to be.. well the darn thing was broken it had Broke off the circuit board. A little superglue and some hot glue... everything works...and flawlessly i might say. Thank you very much ..
