Hi guys, I've recently rooted my i9505, and after trying a few ROMs I've settled on BlackBox. I've never flashed a new kernel before, just stayed with whatever came with the rom, so would it make much difference if I did, and if so, what would people recommend and why?

No probably it won't matter much. Sure there can be a minor difference in your situation, but there is no better kernel.
Some kernels are better optimized than the Samsung stock kernel, but between custom kernels there is not much difference. If you don't understand what the difference is between each kernel, just stay with the one that comes with your rom.

it is like buying something new to replace a good that you have already (and it is working).
you will have to go and check what custom kernels can give you, to see if it raises an eyebrow. from my experience, each kernel has its ups and downs (I did not find a perfect one). you have to try yourself. a kernel that was best for me might be bad for you, depending on what you expect and want.
there are LOTS of benefits a customer kernel can bring!

Hi mate !
The kernel for instance can offer much customization if you're already rooted and on a custom rom, you can change the amplification of the headphone and the speaker of your device, you can overclock / undervolt your device, you can change screen display settings, you can change the i/o scheduler to your personal liking ...etc and much more !
That's why users recommend it, because it can offer what stock kernel can't and won't offer you .

Just in case anyone's interested, I flashed Adam kernel the other day and it didn't really work out. The phone became very juttery and laggy, and I the end I had to restore a nandroid. Glad I gave it a go though.

I'm not much into over clocking or under volting and all that stuff, I just want a smooth kernel, without connection issues, and bug free as possible.
I only usually change I/O and governor's, which is already available on my current kernel and ROM so that's fine.
Any suggestions?

There is no "best kernel", its not a competition. Search in the Development Thread and try them out. Then choose what suits you best in terms of performance/battery.

OK, you obviously took my question out of context, let alone did you even read my question? I did search in the development thread, or else I wouldn't post this question. Out of other peoples user experience, I want to know what kernel was best for them, excluding the over clocking and undervolting features. And BTW, I'm not looking for battery specs as every user is different.
What kernel are you using at the moment? And why is it the best for you?

Oh sorry then I must've misunderstood it.
I am using Francos r51 kernel. Because.. eeerm .. the batterylife is just amazing without sacrificing performance.
These "Best kernel" threads usually get closed. Just giving you fair warning. I'm using Harsh kernel. It's great.
*obligatory there is no best kernel statement*
For 'normal' users I would recommend intersectRaven's kernel. Requires almost no user intervention - you can of course change governor and I/O scheduler - and is easily as fast as stock in performance but with much better batter.
All my opinion of course, yours may differ.
Currently I'm running AOKP with faux which is giving me the best battery life I've ever had. About 5-6 hours of screen on time!

try the motley kernel. its rock solid with great performance and battery life without messing with any settings

If you're a normal user, then why do something abnormal by flashing a custom kernel? There's always a trade-off. You might gain a bit of battery life, but you're more than likely to gain a bit of quirkiness. Furthermore, some kernels like Faux's overwrite system files, whereas other kernels like Franco's use a different ramdisk. This may cause problems if you subsequently flash a kernel that replaces only the zImage (kernel) and which assumes that the ramdisk is stock.

I like this topic, I was actually looking for it.
I'm not an advanced user, I learnt pretty well how certain things about android work (i.e. I've used custom roms since I first started using a smartphone) but I know little to nothing about other stuff, like custom kernels.
Now... let's say that I'm not comfortable messing around too much with aspects of the kernel that I don't fully understand...
- Would you suggest a reasonably simple custom kernel that you believe is better then stock even if you don't mess around with it very much? (to me, and I believe according to iAndropple too, this is not a topic about "the best kernel")
- Would you suggest to stick with stock?
- Should I search for guides on YT or on the Internet so that I can have a better comprehension of how a kernel works, what is relatively safe to tweak and what is not?

I tend to agree with this statement, one has to try and learn, but maybe floepie is right, using a custom kernel is not the same as using a custom rom, and could be dangerous.
I know noobs like myself can be annoying, but I'm just seeking for advice and trying to learn new things here, any answer is welcome.
Thanks for the responses guys, and I'm just getting used to custom kernels, so I just want a low user based kernel, so I can learn my ways from there. I LEARNED how to flash ROMS and ADB stuff, but I didn't learn custom kernels "yet" to a full extent.

I currently am running liquidsmooth 3.2. I just found out that the thread for that ROM has been closed as per OP's request. I would like to switch to a different ROM but based on current choices, I don't know which one would be the best for a daily driver in terms of stability and performance. You advice would greatly appreciated.
Carbon rom is made by many off the devs from Liquid
Bionic Rom is pretty stable , basically stock with bionic patches for krait.
Paranoidandroid ROM is the way to go!

Xylon ROM is one of the most stable roms out there. I would say any of the big name roms in the Original development section are pretty stable. Codefire, Xenon, anything else that isn't in beta.
I love Rasbeanjelly and MMuzzy myself.

Basically any rom is good enough for a daily driver on this phone, I know its a Douchy answer but with a nexus its basically your opinion its not like we are using Roms on the next update with major bugs to be worked on lol

If you want something close to stock with some nice additions that add to the ROM I highly recommend MMuzzy. It's stock with the addition of clear all button for recently opened apps, T9 dialer, customizable quick settings, enhanced power menu and the addition to determine between H and H+ speeds. Other than that it is stock. But a good start for a first time ROM.

Rasbeanjelly is cool for me. But many roms are good dd if you test drive and fine tune!
yesterday i brought new nexus 4 after trading my galaxy s3
i rooted my nexus installed recovery
flashed franko kernel
and installed paranoid rom
now the phone heats up too much even on normal whatsapp chatting
i tried to underclock it from setcpu but still heating is there
later i thought may b my phone doesnt handle paranoid or franco kernal
then i flashed modaco rom
but unfortunately swipe to wake doesnt work
i have still not tested the heating problem
can anyone guide me on setcpu setting or which rom / kernal to try
i am more interested in swipe to wake function
I have similar issues with a lot of Franco releases, some apps like fun run make the phone super hot. I use Motleys kernel, overall way snappier, and battery life is just as good. It's in android original development. As far as rom I use cm10 kang one by trailblazers that's built from linaro tool chain with bionic commits, it is faster than stock cm10 for sure. Try it, both kernel and ROM are built on linaro, good combo.

I know that it did, a lot of odd issues have been happening, so he took it out I'm pretty sure it is back in though. If not, I know matrix kernel has it.

There is only a couple mods that I want in my Rom
-Performance/Battery Tweaks
-Linaro (possibly, not quite sure of it's advantages)
- Extended Power menu (preferably with an option to boot into recovery on the main power menu)
-720p Recording (I can apply this mod myself if needd)
-No sound modifications (for instance the clicking/tapping difference in Purity ROM)
- Battery Tweals/Conservation

Or pretty much just going back to stock, I am not familiar with Linaro at all, so any recommendations would be helpful. From what I have read, all it is is optimized libraries and code fixes, but since installing Purity ROM, my battery life seems horid. I am waiting for the battery life to die so I can recharge it to 100% before I make a judgement on that though.
Just flash and play. Only you can decide what is right for you. Please do not depend on us to choose.

Unfortunately, the best way to go is to flash cm and then you'll see the difference(s)! Don't forget to do a nandroid backup first though.

There's no real reason to use CM on a Nexus phone, other than for since variety. Stock plus xposed lets you do everything a custom ROM does.
CM is really made for phones burdened with terrible manufacturers skins.

Don't listen to this post , if it was true then no dev would release a rom here. There are plenty of roms that offer a lot more then exposed + modules. Even stock roms offer ART runtime which isn't possible with exposed. Try a few and ask questions on the rom in question thread as most people hear are more then happy to help.

I don't have the exact numbers, but quite a few roms are based on CM. Take CM out of the mix, and there will be only be a few roms to choose from.

htc dream and htc magic, first devices with cm support had "nexus like" stock rom. So i guess that CM roms are still good for nexus devices
I reverted back to stock, the reasons for this are the battery drain with CM 11 M2 and the camera issue and the crashing, two of these I also experienced with CM 10.2. I am currently running franco kernel with the Dalvik/Bionic optimization and until now the battery life and performance have been like never before!
let me tell you someting buddy. the battery has several charging cycles ,wich means that over time it will not be as new.this is main reason for the bad battery life.

I don't have any of these issues on CM. The phone drains under 2% an hour while sleeping.

good for everyone that enjoys CM, I do not think I will be returning to it, going to stick with PA for the near future if any rom is going to be flashed. I tested the battery life compared to recent usage, not that this matters anymore.
