MMS Auto-Retrieve With Data Turned Off - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed that MMS messages won't automatically retrieve when I have my data connection turned off. I tend to leave it off whenever I'm connected to WiFi at home to save on battery. Yes, the setting to retrieve is on for both regular and roaming.
First question: is this something by design to not temp enable the data connection to retrieve the message? Pretty sure my Incredible and Rezound both would enable and disable as needed.
Second: is there a benefit to battery life having data off when connected to WiFi or does the phone not waste any juice on it even though the icon is displayed? I know the Incredible and Rezound weren't efficient about multiple connections.

Noob question about data setting

Hi guys,
Got my HD yesterday...love it x100000. My first android so im still getting to grips with it all but what a fantastic phone.
Anyway my question is just about the data connection set up. I was just looking through the settings making sure everything is how I like it and I stumbled across this:
Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile Networks and at the bottom there is an option which says 'Enable always-on mobile data'.
What is this and what does it mean? It says it uses more power on some mobile networks so do I turn it on or turn it off?
I have a wifi and mobile network widget on my home screen cause I like to be able to turn them on and off quickly.
If someone could just explain to me exactly what this setting is and whether I need it on or off.
Thanks a lot
This is your 3g connection. You should switch it off when you're not using it as it's a battery drainer. The always on option is good if you're waiting for a lstge ota update ir something similar and you have an unlimited data cobtract.

I see, but the thing is if I have Enable always-on data yet I have a mobile network widget on my home screen and I turn it off what is actually on?
I have sort of interpreted this always-on setting as:
If you have you mobile (3g) network turned on and have the always-on setting on, then when your phone goes into sleep mode the 3g connection is maintained and apps can still sync whilst your phone is locked/sleeping.
If you have your mobile network (3g) turned on but have the always-on setting turned off then whenever you lock your phone and it goes into sleep mode it is no longer connected to the 3g network and apps and stuff cannot sync (unless you're on wifi obviously). And as soon as you unlock the phone it will reconnect to the 3g network.
And turning the mobile network off from the widget or in settings overrides the always on setting.
Like I said this is only my interpretation of this setting...I've searched google and found almost nothing concrete about it just some opinions and I have searched through the full user manual for the desire HD and this setting has no mention.
So what do you think? Anyone else have any knowledge of this setting?
im not sure about this but i think it means that it doesnt connect, disconnect, connect again whenever you open or close the internet. its always connected, but not always active, so its faster to start up. its like leaving your wifi on all the time. theres always a connection but its not always passing data.
i leave mine always on because it doesnt eat much battery and it makes connecting over 3g much faster.

[REQ] app that stops DATA when being connected to Wifi

hi,
the data (3g/2g) is taking alot of my battery life..
i'm looking for someting like "setting profiles" that is running as a service and while being connected to wifi its automatically disabling the data (Data enabled)
and returning it to enabled when there is no wifi connection...
i didn't see in setting profiles option to set profile without data....
when you connect to wifi, android OS turns of the 3g data connection already.

As far as I know, Android turns off data when on wifi automatically without any additional software

Turns off, or just uses the WiFi preferentially? There's a difference, though operationally perhaps irrelevant.
My NS frequently shows BOTH the WiFi connected and the Edge signal indicator while I'm at home. Both green.

it turns it off. the 3g data session is terminated once you connect to wifi, and when you turn off wifi, the 3g data connection is re-established.
Agreed, it turns OFF the the 3g data. Notice that when you get on WiFi, that the wifi icon appears, and the 3g icon DISAPPEARS. This is because it's disabling the 3g since it has access to a wifi connection
this has been the default since as far as i've used Android

Does the DroidX bridge network connections?

If I have just my cell radio enabled, then I enable the WiFi - does the phone disable the data on the cell radio, or leave both enabled?
If both are enabled, then is it bridged or not? In other words, when I have my WiFi on, will I get the speed of my WifI + Cell service?
If the data connection is not bridged, then it seems pretty silly to have WiFi options on location apps, like Latitude, since this means that if you lose the WiFi connection, the phone will not know to switch back to the cell data connection.
No when wifi is enabled the phone has no use for 3g so it disables it until u turn wifi off. Oh and I use an app called quick settings from the market cause u can manually turn off everything with it and makes ur battery last way longer too

<<<<<<<Check mail every hour over GPRS or WiFi

What app would enable wifi first and if unsuccessful gprs than check for mail every hour.Of course to disable the connection after certain period of time.
Thank you
c4
Try Tasker, you can schedule all kinds of things with it.
Thank you for your reply.I tried tasker but it does not have this function or maybe I could not find it.
Wanted to do first wifi check to see if WIFI is near and collect the mail if WiFi is not near to automaticaly switch GPRS and collect mail. Turn off GPRS
Why? Your phone already looks for open wifi spots or spots you already logged in to. If it can't find any, it switches to your mobile internet connection. And it drops the connection after a while automatically..

Just set tasker to turn on wifi and mobile data every hour and turn them off again after a couple of minutes. If you have your mail set to sync automatically it will check for mail when a data connection becomes available, wifi first then mobile data.
As above though, not sure why you would want to do this. You could just change your sync schedule to hourly and the phone will connect automatically.

turn off data when on wifi?

Will I save battery to turn off data when I am on wifi? Is there any toggle that will turn on wifi and turn off data at the same time?

Um, you could use Tasker...
But technically Mobile Data is disabled when you have an Active WiFi Connection..
Its still functions for MMS and such though. (I think, maybe it downloads those via the WiFi Connection also, have not looked into it before)
But yeah, Not really going to save any battery, since mobile data should not be used anyways when you have an active wifi connection
When you are on WiFi, the cell towers will never get used for data. You will still be connected to them for receiving phone calls, but that should not be a big battery drain. The phone battery has enough power to keep stay in standby mode for a week. The WiFi data will take many more times the amount of power.

It will save some battery. You want to look into an app named Tasker. You can basically write rules that perform this and many other tasks. There is a bit of a learning curve to the app though.
Data connection is automatically disabled when you are using WiFi. If you are connected through WiFi, you will notice that there is no G or H or anything on the signal bars.
