How to turn on/off thermal throttling? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The point of this thread is to get rid of the micro stutter/ lag that occurs while browsing through the UI (scrolling lists for example). For the majority of people, the solution can apparently be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2479892 .
However, Verizon users got screwed and cannot access the hidden menu to reach the thermal setting.
Is there any work around for this on verizon? I just want a lag free phone and this phone would be perfect...

Sending my 101 back

Well I think I will send my 101 back to TD and go with the SGT instead, the new update is making my 101 unbearable as it freezes often, and honestly I don't thing there is enough interest for someone to work on it and get root and roms out.
Hopefully I'm wrong and someone with the skills required to fix the issues Archos/Google can't seem to get right, will come along and make this the great tablet it could be with the right firmware/os
Try downgrading Voice Search, I had the same problems with my A70 untill I downgraded Voice Search and now its flying. Goto Settings, Applications, Manage Applications and find Voice Search. Click on it and click Uninstall updates, should make your A101 run fine again.
Where is that? All i see is force stop and clear data the other tabs are greyed out.

try to uninstall
you can also install OS Monitor and check for apps with high CPU usage
When I did it it was right of Force Stop, but if it has Uninstall greyed out then Voice Search is not causing the problem for you.

Check Best Buy for the Huawei before getting SGT. It is 300 and said no Contract. Seems like a good device. Hardware buttons are in a strange place but I would say better then these software ones that are unresponsive at times.
Faldiin
I have used a few of the Huawei devices and was surprised at how well designed they are for the price but I would be very concerned about slower clock speed, and Android 2.1, especially for a user that would send a 101 back for not being fast enough.
The OP should take a close look at the apps that you are running on the 101. Something must be slowing it down. If it runs slow out of the box, you could call customer service. My 70 with the firmware update is faster than any other device I have used including iPad and top of the line Android phones.
My 70 gets slowed down by errant background tasks. It still doesn't kill tasks like it should. It kills them based on RAM but sometimes you have something keeping your cpu super busy and it doesn't seem to be smart enough to kill that.
i have alleviated the freezes to some extent, but getting my Epic to tether either via ad-hoc, or usb doesn't seem to work,
root does not seem to be coming anytime soon to the Archo's line, so I'm still debating on whether or not to send it back.

Impressions after a week...

A lot of us have had the device for at least week now so it would be a good time to post impressions after a bit more hands on time. I’ll start...
10 days in I’m still glad I got it but there are plenty of things that could be improved. I’ve been on HTC phones (Desire, Desire Z) before this running at different times standard HTC Sense ROMs as well as various versions of Cyanogen Mod and AOSP based ROMs. My views after 2 weeks of use:
* Loving the fact that Samsung appears to be treating this almost like a developer phone (ala Nexus) in terms of open bootloader, availability of source code etc. I’ve said my goodbyes to HTC precisely because of this.
* Based on the frequency of updates Samsung also appears to be focused on addressing issues. They are one if the first out of the gates for Gingerbread updates to their existing devices so I’m hoping they continue to focus on delivering on the latest versions of Android.
* Touchwiz is not as invasive as HTC’s Sense. It improves on stock android in many ways. My first Samsung phone so I can’t really speak of improvements over previous versions of Samsung ROMs but so far I don’t hate TouchWiz but I do find that they seem to take a lot of inspiration from Apple even when the standard Android implementation is better in some cases (I didn’t hate HTC Sense either but I did find it too far from stock for my liking). Having said that there are some totally brain dead decisions that Samsung appear to have taken which I just don’t get:
1) Default home screen on the left instead of the middle. Why copy Apple on this one when Android’s default makes so much more sense. I love having frequently used apps with a swipe to the right and an agenda widget on the left so I can get to both with a single swipe. Now I have to pick one.
2) Fixed icons at the bottom. I understand Phone and Apps being fixed but not messaging and contacts. I’d like to change those - hell, even Apple lets you change those. *** NEVERMIND *** See posts below. It CAN be edited.
3) Lock screen - talk about making something worse - this one takes the cake. Thank god for widget locker.
4) Dialer logs - I don’t want my SMS messages to show up on my phone dialer logs. There is no option to just view all calls without the rest of the stuff cluttering it up. (Yes I know I can switch to Dialer One but apart from this one major issue I actually like the default Samsung dialer).
* Wireless - Everything wireless about this phone has issues. May be a function of how thin it is but my experience so far:
1) Phone - Much improved after the latest firmware updates but data connection can take a while to latch on when moving out of WiFi coverage and sometimes just drops out for 5-10 minutes at a time for no apparent reason (even when the phone shows five bars in a strong signal area).
2) Bluetooth - The headset I have is not working well at all. Quality seems fine but every few seconds drops out or gets noisy for a second or so. The same headset works perfectly well with the HTC devices as well as with an iPhone.
3) GPS - Sometimes flawless but lock time is definitely a lot slower than the HTC devices. It also has a tendancy to lose lock a lot easier than the HTC devices. Other times it jumps around all over the place before getting a lock. Lots of weird behaviour here.
4) WiFi - Where other phones get weak coverage this one gets none. If you have strong WiFi signals everywhere you use the device this is not an issue. 5 Ghz also performs significantly worse than 2 Ghz.
* Battery life - It appears this phone has only 2 gears. A low gear for phone / SMS / push mail / browsing where battery life is excellent but then kicks into hyper-turbo mode if you use Flash video, games or anything taxing where it burns through battery life in no time. You can easily get through a whole day with power to spare if you stick to only the basic activities but best to use everything else while plugged in.
The reality is even with all these issues, I couldn’t give this device up. The power and speed coupled with the slim form factor and gorgeous screen are just too damn impressive and all the problems pale in significance. I might have had buyers remorse if the HTC Sensation was coming with an open bootloader and a slimmer profile but at the moment I don’t see anything that compares. I’m just hoping Samsung can fix some of the problems I’ve listed in software.
Regarding fixed items at the bottom: you can edit them from within the applications screen.

Nice honest and informative post. Most of the issues will hopefully be fixable once we start getting some custom ROMs I'm hoping. Or hopefully fixes direct from Samsung in regards to GPS, WiFi, and 3G. I guess time will tell.

Very puzzling that Sammy would have issues in key connectivity areas on such a high profile phone. Wonder if they''re all antenna related? As you say, hopefully not, and it's all solvable with SW.

C'mon guys - it's not that hard to reorder your homescreens...
Just pinch zoom (helicopter mode) longpress & drag.....

The issue isn't re-ordering. It's changing the default home screen from the left (on TouchWiz) to the middle (As on stock Android / Sense etc)

After my first day with this phone I switched to the the ADW Launcher, Samsung really didn't think the TouchWiz launcher through - not only the default homescreen being on the left, but also the fact that Apps in the drawer aren't sorted alphabetically.
I used to own the Samsung Galaxy Vibrant. It's disturbing that Samsung is still not getting the GPS working right!

I'm on the latest firmware but it's still pretty buggy...
I've tried switching to launcher pro but I still get crash reboots and loss of sound.
Last night I entered the pin and the phone just reboots.
I also loose the clicks on the pin screen. When this happens you have to reboot go get audio back...I tried playing an mp4 video with no sound when it was in this state and it just said unable to play. Of course it worked fine after a reboot...
So pretty buggy at the moment
mine has no bugs or what so ever, after 2 weeks of used i can never compare it to other phones performance either android or iOS,i used both before but this one is simply way above them..
no built in stock music widget was a dissapointment for me as well as the horrible lock screen style and the lag during wakeup..apart from that this phone is really amazing..but touchwiz needs some serious thought...

Agreed that this phone is as speedy and steady as the HTC Desire and iPhone 4 that I have owned. The trick to all these phones is that if you play around too much with settings, tweaks, launchers you are likely to get problems.

Having Lag & Heat Issues???
Is anyone having lag issue or any heat issues? I guess I have one of the problem notes as mine has extreme lag and heat problems. I have cleared all caches and have also factory reset several times. What's weird is that the lag will come and go, but it's there more often than not. Even scrolling in settings has the jitters.
Any ideas anyone. I might be better off going through the miserable process of exchanging through the mail.
Thanks in advance for any help!
You'll have to boot to safe mode to see if the issue persists. Also, make sure power saving mode isn't on (I've left it on before).

My guess is it has to do with one or multiple of the apps you have installed. There is a 3 step process to fix this issue.
#1 - See if any of the apps you have installed are running rouge. Check, battery usage, RAM usage, and Data Usage to see if you have any bad apps. Uninstall any 3rd party apps that you installed that are running too much. They may just still need updated to be optimized for this new device. Also you can use the "sleep" (doze) feature in battery management to restrict apps that are running TOO much in the background. Also on any apps that are using too much data or RAM check the permissions. If an app does not need access to Data, Media etc to work properly turn off those permissions.
#2 Debloat the device. I like "Package Disabler Pro". Basically if it has Facebook, FB, or ATT in the name you should disable it. Also you can go through an disable any Samsung software you do not use as well. I would be careful about using the "disable all bloatware" button because it is not setup correctly for this new device yet.
#3 Give it some time. It you have a TON of media on a micro EXSD card then it can take a new phone a long time to index and create thumbnails for all of that information. It should speed up i about a day or so once it finishes indexing. this will also effect your battery life till it is completed.

Yeah it will break Samsung Pay though... I think it's related to the UIBCVirtualSiftkey app, but have not confirmed that. Also it does not get nearly all of the bloatware. There is a ton of new AT&T junk it does not disable as well as a bunch of new Facebook crap and Samsung crap.

Definitely. It gave me the perfect opportunity to try out the scroll capture. Let me know if you have any questions. This is what I have disabled so far without any issues. Once I get a full completed list I'll probably do a write up about how to clean up the dock ROM. I think I'm about 70% done with the list.
So far I'm getting about 6.5 hrs of SOT and about 28 his of usage.

I am not positive but I think it's the UIBCVirtualSoftkey if the doesn't fix it. Just enable all of the stuff you disabled and reboot. Then only disable what's on my list. I can confirm is working with my setup.
I'm exchanging mine tomorrow and was hoping for better news but from your experience it sounds like I may have to deal with an expensive piece of crap.

This phone lags a lot especially in Chrome and other scrolling apps.. sometimes switching between apps takes lot of time too...I have been using Samsung phones for quite sometime, but unfortunately this is the phone lagging more than any other phone for me..debloated almost 150 apps, still the same..and it gets hot as well when watching videos...none of this happened for me on Note 5...I think Samsung screwed with Note7 software..when they initially released Grace UX software for Note 5, it was very smooth...but the final Note7 software seems to be laggy...the same apps and setup on Note5 doesn't give me these issues....gonna return and try my luck with new one...but good thing is battery life has been very good for me...easily 5hrs SOT whereas on Note5, I used to get only 3.5 hrs

When the phone is working properly, bloatware should make no noticeable difference and debloating is unnecessary.
My Note 7 usually responds instantly, with no lag, no matter how heavily I'm using it. That's with nothing disabled or debloated. (I'm using the Google Now launcher but everything else is stock/default, with no esoteric apps or settings.)
However, on three occasions in the week I've had the phone, it's gotten into a mode with serious lag while typing. In this mode, even though the characters I type still show up on the screen instantly, I can type 3 or 4 characters with no sound feedback or vibration feedback; then, there will be 3 or 4 delayed clicks and vibrations in rapid succession.
When this serious-lag mode starts, it continues even if I close all apps and put the phone in Airplane mode. It also makes no difference if I turn on power-saving mode, or even maximum power-saving. The only thing I've found that fixes it (for a while) is rebooting.
The intermittent occurrence of the serious-lag problem shows that it's not a matter of the phone being underpowered or overloaded. There's some specific bug that needs to be fixed.
UPDATE: It just happened for a fourth time. And when the serious-lag mode starts, it's not just typing that has a delay with audio feedback. The feedback delay also occurs when I tap on icons, tap on the Back or Recent-apps soft-buttons, etc. There's a delay of up to a second or two between tapping and hearing the feedback.
On the other hand, compute-intensive tasks--such as playing streaming video--work properly even when the phone is in serious-lag mode. So that's further evidence that there is some specific bug, and not a general problem of being underpowered or overloaded.

Curious, do these typing lags occur on the hangouts app?!?! It seems to be the ONLY app on my Note 5 (and all the other phones I've used) that has a VERY NOTICEABLE KEYBOARD LAG, especially with Samsung Stock keyboard. This happens even with other keyboards, but is WORST with samsung keyboard.....

No, the problem I'm seeing is unrelated to any app or keyboard. When my phone is in serious-lag mode, the problem occurs across the board. When it's not in lag-mode (which it usually isn't), then there's no lag in any app, including Hangouts.

Phone lagging need help

Hey guys so I currently have the att lg v20 h910 model I believe and I'm having some issues I'm sure theres a bunch of threads on this already but thought i would just ask. So it's lagging pretty bad In my opinion I love the phone and the specs but I do not understand why it's lagging for what i paid. Coming from mostly iPhones and jailbreaking I'm not really used to android but I damn well love the fact that I can do everything on stock android that I cant do on a stock iPhone basically the Android can do more at stock than basically a jailbroken iPhone can do which is crazy. So the lag I'm experiencing is mostly in YouTube app basically the video will pause but the sound keeps playing so the video is actually playing but the picture that's on the screen is paused and camera which is extremely laggy sometimes I'll open the camera app and it will be shaky and when I move the camera around its blurry and looks like straight up pixels lol looks laggy when moving the camera. sometimes it can be on the home screen randomly sometimes it flys which is weird I don't have alot of apps on here also and I currently do not have a SD card I know this sounds stupid to you guys but remember I'm coming from iPhone... So does a SD card improve performance? Does it get rid of the lag or something? I also would like to note I don't mind rooting as long as it fixes the freaking lag.. Also my device is not a bad apple out of the bunch I actually got a replacement of the same phone from att they logged into my phone and saw the lag sent me the same device and they new device was doing the exact same thing the old device was so I sent back the new one and kept the old bc I have all my apps up here. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I just want to enjoy my phone =(. And sorry for the long post.
Settings/Developer Options/Tick on "Force GPU Rendering" this should make this beast smoother/snappier" If root available try L Speed/Entropy/fstrim apps found on Play Store! LG V20 & LG G5 are snappy beasts, well optimised with Snapdragon 820 processor and is better than Samsung.
No SD card doesn't slow or lag a powerful phone like the amazing V20, I have tons of storage since I use a 128 GB micro SD and no issues.
What class is your sdcard (if any)? I've found that a slow sdcard can have some terrible effects on performance, in fact this has been an excuse to remove external memory support on some phones by the developers because they tend to be significantly slower than the internal memory.
I have Spotify and the storage set to external on a class 10 cars and there is noticeable lag in the program compared to other programs. It lags just as much as it did on my v10 other programs do not exhibit this behavior.
Also as much as I hate Apple they make some incredibly fast processors and in general their processors are faster than Qualcomm's processors. Still in day to day operations this shouldn't be noticeable and there shouldn't be lag on the v20 as you're describing.
I am running non-rooted and do not experience this lag. If you want to try force GPU rendering you have to enable developer options you can do this by:
- going to settings, go to about phone
- tap software version, tap build number (7 times I believe) you'll be told developer mode enabled or something to that extent
- now go back to settings you'll have a new developer option available
- scroll down until you find "Force GPU rendering", put a check, this may or may not smooth out your performance.
The theory is that this will force the GPU to take on more tasks freeing up the CPU for other tasks, essentially they share the load more.
Welcome to android, you'll be floored by the amount of stuff you can do on android that you can't do on iOS. You should check out some of the 3rd party launchers if you want some more customization to the look of android. I recommend ADW launcher 2.0, Action Launcher or Nova.

Battery pull, reinstall of app, clear cache; there are various options to remedy your issue. Try all of the suggested routes and see if it helps. Good luck.
Just pointing out he said he has no SD card...
The only lag I have experienced was with my stock messaging app. Typing lag was driving me crazy. Didn't seem to matter which keyboard I used.
I don't know if it's because I don't delete my texts or what but I switched to the Textra messaging app and the lag seems to be gone. (and I like the app better too!)
What you're experiencing definitely doesn't sound "normal".
You shouldn't have to change settings to get a smooth running phone.
It's strange that the replacement showed the same lag. Did you install any apps before testing for lag?
Seems like there could be an app causing this. I'm not really qualified to help except to say it's just not "normal" so I hope you can get it figured out!
Hey guys sorry for late message so yeah I sadly don't have a SD card I feel like I don't really need one I don't use that much data I can add that I use Spotify as well and I have over 2k songs easy I listen to alot of music lol. But I don't think that should make a huge difference in the speed maybe it does idk for sure though. So another extremely noob question can I root with no SD card? If so I'll probaly do it and use a different rom or something hopefully that will help. So enabling developer options with gpu rendering did not help sadly its basically the same performance seems like it. And yes I'm loving the android experience so far but I can say atm iPhone had way better performance as in speed and what not but hopefully if I can get this beast working right I'll be satisfied.

Yeah im thinking it could be a app on the phone but idk for sure and not really I actually tried it with factory reset a couple of weeks ago it was about the same experience... At just stock..
Alright guys quick update i actually just got my device rooted took like 2 freaking hours i kept running into issues anyways in the end it did get rooted but its basically acting the same... For instance when the phone cut on finally and finally starting to add all the information to setup my phone the menus were so laggy that it took me 10 mins just get through the setup process... and then on top of that i went into developer options and it froze up and had to reset settings application. I know that it said to do another adb reboot recovery after it finally started back for the first time into android and i did that... but its still extremely slow. And throughout out the setting up the phone process i naturally did not recover the apps from my old phone i wish there was a way to setup the phone just like it was before i rooted it.... I also would like to know what would be best option as far as mods and roms go... I have to have wifi calling as i have no signal in my house which is retarted... so wifi calling has to be on... thats about all i care about i dont need fm radio, or any of that other stuff. (edit) well i recently found out that i screwed up lol i rooted with dirty santa and i thought the wifi calling would only be screwed up with a custom rom boy was i wrong so the wifi calling doesnt work with rooting =( well im going to download the factory rom and reset it again lol.

Android 10 stable UI lag

Hi,
I've noticed a UI lag when switching between apps or transitioning from an open app to home screen. This didn't happen in the Android 10 beta rom. Anybody have the same issue? I clean flashed the stable android 10.
I can confirm this issue in the stable release. But I would like to add that this lag was already in the beta release and is in my testing not app specific. I would clear the cache and make a reboot.
Go into developer options and disable the three animation types. Everything runs MUCH faster with them off.

I have, and while it does suppress animations, it actually feels less polished. And anyway, it does not resolve the UI lag which is really visible when using th app switcher. It's dropping below like 10fps. As if some gfx acceleration was disabled or the phone was completely overwhelmed
Anyone found a fix? I experience the lag every once in a while, though it's prevalent enough to be annoying.
I am having this literally every time i use the alt-tab like feature. Oneplus managed to **** up the one thing (butter smooth) Google has been bragging about for several versions ???
A simple fix would be toh format device once, as I have clean flashed and I don't face any lags

doesn't change a thing. (and am wondering it would. This feature is supposed to make smoothness (even) better, not worse)
Turn off auto brightness .. maybe it can help
I have been reading up on the A10 stable release posts and I saw a lot of people mentioning the issue that you are talking about here.
Many of them suggested a full format. So basically setting up your device as a new device.
I cannot confirm if this works for everyone but a lot of people are saying that after a fresh install they are not facing any issues.
All of the points mentioned above are just what I read from xda and op forum posts. I personally have not made the switch yet and probably wont be doing so soon.
Hey guys. I encountered the same problem on my Nokia 9. Not quite sure why this error doesn't get noticed by more people.
I think I fixed it for me though.
In my case it seemed that the OLED always on screen (which shows notifications and the time) was the problem in my case. It would always show that there are notifications even if there weren't any and that started adding up. So while the rest of my phone ran buttery smooth, the notification bar and lockscreen began looking like a Diashow. 2-5 fps sometimes. What I think is happening is that all these notifications are buggy and the always on screen can't get rid of them.
So my fix was turning that off and then restarting my phone. Since that everything runs smooth again.
If there is another thread I should post this to please tell me but I only found this one.
Hope it helped.

I think the issue is just : it's a ****show of awful coding, optimisation and non-existent testing. If manufacturers' programmers put in half the effort debugging their software we as "powerusers" at xda/reddit/... put twisting our brains in and out trying find correlating explanations and workarounds as to why we get UI lags or other absurd bugs (like 5GHz wifi not working anymore) on the 10th ****ing iteration of Android, we wouldn't have all of this. It all boils down to the general idea that because it is consumer grade product, quality check is just a non-subject. Apparent quality is just enough at product launch, and further updates (if they do get round to releasing them) can brake everything without manufacturers being held accountable.
The update showed up on my phone on the 25th, but, I'm NOT updating. 9 is too damn stable for me, & I don't see any "features" in 10 that will benefit me.
After reading all this i am not going to update to 10. Yet happy with 9.17.
Tmob unbranded dual sim op6t.
Narrowed down some parameters
I have the OnePlus 6, and have similar issues, that include swapping apps being slow, but not just the swapping of apps, any app that has typing in it, seems to DIE when I start typing. Maybe this is a google keyboard issue or something? I notice the issue most in the Microsoft Teams mobile app. It also tends to only happen when at least 2 apps are open, if it's on it's own, it seems to do fine.
This might just be coincidence but I went into dev settings and turned on "strict mode" and now I can't get it to lag like it previously did.
I just looked at my running services (dev options > running services) and saw that my Bluetooth was using 2.2GB of ram, and youtube was 1.7GB of that. I toggled bluetooth off, then back on and it reset this. I have not modified the strict mode setting above... still have not had any lag, will update this thread if I do get more lag.

Lagging issue I've seen many reporting in xda on the stock rom OOS 10.3.0. But 5GHz is working as expected. I can confirm it because I'm using 5GHz WiFI now and then

After a night/day of normal testing with this, where I would normally have issues, I have not had and of the lag I mentioned above. This seems to have fixed some things. So, I would suggest that you first check to see what running processes are using all the ram, and then turn on strict mode in dev settings, if that doesn't solve your issues. I also have Ram Boost option turned off.
I experience the FPS drop quite often after the update. It's especially noticable when scrolling pages, switching between apps, pulling down the upper panel. The slowness seems to disappear temporarily after closing all apps. But I can't say that some particular app causes the lag.
UPD: A simple test to recreate the problem. I push the square button to switch between apps. Start swiping finger left-right and watch the animation smoothness. After 5-10 seconds comes the wave of low FPS, which lasts for a couple of seconds. Then the process repeats. The slowness doesn't seem to depend on some exact apps that are open.
UPD2: Well, I've just found out that the problem isn't constant throughout the day. There must be some connection to applications running in the background or something like this.
