ehi guys, just got a N4.
I'm wondering, why root , unlock and install a custorm rom on a Nexus 4, Google?
Just asking what good things i can have.
And if is difficoult to unlock and root to install custom roms on a 4.3.
Thanks everyone

Instruction here if you want to try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018179
If you have to ask why then maybe you don't need root. You might brick your device if you try to install custom rom and do it incorrectly, just try rooting first. You don't exactly "install custom rom on 4.3", but over the entire device itself, wiping out your previous stock Android 4.3.

There is no reason. People just want to do it. Don't over analyze simple things.

You might got that wrong here mate.
Mentioning a few examples, like making full backup of your device system or blocking ads , does it seem like rooting for fun or because someone wants to get more from his device?

This is xda and no need to make a thread to ask that question... Not trying to be rude but there are 100's maybe 1000's of threads and reasons pros and cons that you can look at and draw up your own conclusion. Again no disrespect but the choice is yours and the reason both pro and con are out there.
Check Development and Check Themes and Apps for your good stuff
Good Luck :good:
Rooting is mandatory! For the extra functions for your device! The custom ROM thing! Give it a try! Been using CM since the GNex! But have been using and happy with stock for a while now. But with out exploring what custom ROMs offer, your always going to be wondering what the fuss is about! So give it a try! Once your rooted and a custom recovery is installed. Its as simple as copying a few over to your memory, and flashing. CM and PA are good starts but usually find custom ROMs are more of a drain on battery.

You dont need to be rooted to install a custom rom. (flashing the custom rom will give you root) You just need a custom recovery.

You guys have prob seen a thread like this a million times, but I am getting my nexus 4 soon and I wasn't sure if i should root it or not. I have rooted before (droid x2, galaxy nexus, nexus 7) so I am fairly familiar with how the process works. I will not loose my updates from Google if I root and stay on stock ROM? That's what I would plan on doing anyways if I did. Thanks for the help!

Just Google some of the benefits of having root.. if any of those sound appealing to you then... root it. If not, don't. Buuuut since you've already been rooted with several devices, you should already know if you should root or not. But thanks for making a new thread for this personal decision that you've made 3 times before

In his defense this is a different devices I rooted and flashed rooms on my gs3 and gs2 but have not rooted or anything to this device but the key is yet right now haven't found a huge reason to do so this rom works perfectly for me and I get a days use out of it

I just couldn't stand it no more and rooted after 1 month. Also flashed clockworkmod.
Went to Nightly Mako.
I love the device but feel the new Clockwork mod's blobs folder, unable to access backups so easy, and the dam memory size...
I hesitate and hope Nightlies are flawless. Frankly its awesome. So are is the Stock ROM.
I just prefer CM10.1
ROOT!!
If I were to flash nexus 4 PA would I need to wipe system as well as do a factory reset in recovery? The directions just say factory reset.

You had better gain root... Gaining root denotes a gain not a loss. Unlocking the bootloader means your unbacked data would be lost. So back up data and root and enjoy. And yes you may wipe system I recommend it.

Hello all,
I'm very new to the XDA fourms, and would like to thank everyone for having and keeping such a supportive community for Android based products
I would like to start off saying I just recently purchased a Nexus 4 and I would really like to root it, i'm a complete noob too rooting and have a few questions. I did read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688 and the how too Youtube video. questions below
1. I did see that i can keep the custom rom and just unlock and root my device, but will this allow me to change my cpu speed and such to conserve battery or would i need to install a different kernal and rom?
2. After rooting and unlocking my device and keeping stock rom will i still be able to get OTA updates without reverting back to factory state? or would i have to revert back to factory state DL the OTA update and re-root again?
3. I know that nexus 4 tool kit says Root Stock Jelly Bean builds (upto 4.2.1 JOP40D), can i use this for 4.2.2 or is their a updated Tool kit for 4.2.2? and if their is can someone please provide a link i tried searching for it and couldn't find anything, and preferably from Mr. mskip
I know these questions have probably been asked a million times and i apologies in advance for that. (noob problems )
Also advice and opinions are always extremely welcome :good:

1. CPU control is a function of the kernel. You can keep the stock kernel, but I'd recommend a custom one. More features and capabilities.
2. I may be mistaken, but I believe your OTA will function as long as you are on the stock ROM and kernel with the factory files in place and the stock recovery. That's a lot to sacrifice for an update, especially when they'll be readily available here.
3. Don't use a toolkit. Use the rooting sticky to learn how to do it right.
thank you

Because when one uses a toolkit nothing is learned. If they ever run into a problem they won't know how to fix it. It also makes it more difficult for others to help because they don't understand the terminology.
I wrote more about this last January. That thread is linked in my signature "Dangers of toolkits and one click root methods."

I wouldnt worry about updates.
Devs upload there ROMs with new android updates quickly.
Itll be much easier just to flash custom UPDATED ROMs than ota updates in my opinion.
Franco kernel would be a great start for you as well.

Hey, guys.
I recently purchased a new phone-LG Optimus L5 II e460
I want to change the ROM to something else but I haven't been able to find one that supports it. I looked around Google and found some things that I don't understand.
So, the first one is: What does flashing a KDZ mean?
Second one: Will doing so add something like a support for ROMs?
Third one: If it doesn't, can someone explain to me how to port a ROM to my phone (if possible)?
Flashing a KDZ file is about restoring stock ROM what you already have. First, you have to root your phone and then you need to download ClockWorkMod Recovery. In CWM Recovery you can install custom ROMs. Don't know where to download the custom ROM. You have a new phone.

Hey man.
Welcome to the LG family! Congratulations on your purchase. I've done a little bit of research for your phone, and unfortunately came to the conclusion that your phone is only capable of being rooted. Unlocking your boot loader, installing a custom recovery and ROM is not possible yet. Even though you might not like your current stock ROM, you can always change it by rooting your phone and installing a couple of applications or tweaks that will definitely let you adjust your phone to your own liking. You can root your phone by following this small guide.
If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask!

Definitely, as long as there's a few developers out there willing to work for this phone!
Few Mods though..

You can always customize the ROM to your needs!
Just download Xposed FrameWork and the modules required for your need and Voila!

What is cyanogenmod? Do I need it?
Thanks for everyone who helps out!
Download rom manager from play store and use it to flash a custom recovery.. It should be simple
After that you can flash cyanogenmod which is a ROM that changes your phones interface to almost stock android with some added features

As far as I know the ATT S5 has a locked boot loader and hence cannot use custom recoveries or ROMs. For now you are stuck with the ROM you have. You are able to modify your ROM now though.

Two things you should consider..
First of all, if you install a custom kernel/recovery, it will void your warranty (this is called as tripping the KNOX flag). Currently, this is something that you cannot fix by yourself and if your phone breaks Samsung may or may not fix it. But that doesn't actually matter since your phone is on ATT and that one is bootloader locked anyway (which means that currently you cannot flash that recovery anyway).
Second thing is that currently CM11 is pretty broken and some features like GPS and Camera aren't working. It will take some time before people manage to iron out all the bugs and even then it might not be perfect.
My advice is that you should first try to get familiar with the phone and then start thinking about modifying it since you aren't used to Android phones. While rooting might give you some functionality you normally wouldn't have, it's not really something that you'll absolutely need. Even out of the box Android is still way more capable and customizable than iOS and most of that stuff doesn't need rooting.
Dear XDA-Dev members,
I'm sorry in advance for my English, but I'll try my best.
For a long time, I never really wanted to root my phone, mainly because of the risks. That all changed lately and now I'm willing to root it, especially for the extra possibilities. I've been searching for a while now and found many different methods of rooting and a lot of definitions I'm not really aware of. So I got a few questions and I hope someone is willing to help me with this.
What exactly do definitions like, ROM, Stock ROM, flashing, whiping and root-related definitions mean? I guess it's some important knowledge for when I want to root my phone.
How do I know what builds are suitable for my phone? I recently updated to Android Lollipop and wish to keep that. I noticed a lot of functions are missing (Samsung???).
What exactly is the XPosed Framework and its modules I've been reading about?
Which method would be the easiest to use for rooting for the first time?
... And for installing a custom Android build?
My current installed apps/games/launcher (Apex), will these be gone? Or can they be restored?
Are there any other important things I need to know?
I don't have an external SD card yet, but I really need to get one, as my internal storage is getting kinda full.
At last, I've included my device information here: imgur.com/a/eKm1F (can't post the link directly due to XDA's anti-spam-thingy)
I really hope someone is willing to help me. Thank you in advance!
Start by reading this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2419762
- What exactly do definitions like, ROM, Stock ROM, flashing, whiping and root-related definitions mean? Can be easily found by a simple google search
- What exactly is the XPosed Framework and its modules I've been reading about? Can also be found by a simple search.
- How do I know what builds are suitable for my phone? I recently updated to Android Lollipop and wish to keep that. I noticed a lot of functions are missing (Samsung???). Every up to date custom rom is based Lollipop. And no there are no functions missing.
- For rooting you should use cf auto-root i9505. Type it in the search bar in the right corner of your screen.
- For installing custom roms you need a custom recovery. Use Philz of TWRP.
Last tip. Start reading and just do it. You can't destroy your phone.
Thank you. But once again, how do I know what custom rom is suitable for my device?
I'll read all the links posted.

Everyone rom that's in the I9505 section.
Xpose is not available to lollipop yet.
Check the most popular Roms and start from there.
If u are already at Lolipoo , You'll probably need to update the bootloader to the same of the rom u intent to flash.
U must learn how to use ODIN. U could easy flash a pre rooted rom from ODIN.
Roms, bootloaders, modems and kernel is what u can change.
Bootloader only if needed, modem also.
Roms and kernels I do keep up to date.
Start with Imperium ROM maybe.
Flash by ODIN a recovery, like TWRP, reboot recovery, wipe everything and flash the rom.
Pretty simple but u must read a lot to not get lost in the way.
Welcome

Xposed is available for Android 5.0.1 but is still being tested and refined.
Before attempting to do ANYTHING, install Wanam EFS Backup and back up the IMEI. Losing the IMEI is not fun.
Other than that, start reading and stop asking what the best ROM is. The best ROM is the one that meets your needs.

Yes.
Look in the Xposed thread.
I don't use Xposed on my S4 as the ROM I use has built-in virtually everything I would have used Xposed for. Xposed for my Android 2.3.7 device is a different story. I need it there for the Master Key fix, since I no longer update the custom ROM I made for the device.
