Bad antenna? Horrible signal and Wi-Fi - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Am I the only one that has bad signal with this phone? My Wi-Fi cuts out and I barely get signal in places where I got 4 bars on my iPhone. Is there a fix to this?

Having the same issue with my note 3. Seems to have gotten slightly better the past few days, but still poor compared to my note 2. Thinking about taking it back to Verizon this week. Anyone know how the return/exchange process works? If I exchange it and still have problems then what are my options? Or if I return it do I get my upgrade back? Can I then repurchase it and have another 14 days to test and potentially return it?

This is my only complaint about my phone. No problems on WiFi, but 4G reception is inconsistent and I often find the phone switching to 3G in places my Note 2 wouldn't. In that situation, I can use Tellinfo to force LTE only and I often have reception. The only problem with this is in places where 3G would actually be appropriate, I obviously then have no service.
This leads me to conclude (and hope) that it's a software/modem firmware issue rather than a hardware issue--the device is switching to 3G when staying on LTE would be appropriate. As such, we might hope for a fix.

I am almost certain there is a restocking fee but they may waive that/it may not apply if you are dealing with a defective device.

I have an ac router with 2 channels I sit 3 ft. From it and get poor connection errors and it's slow when it does work. I have Fios as well.
There has to be bad drivers or radio.

I have same exact problem. Except I'm using century link

My first N3 had great WiFi & signal strength, build date 10/2, but had a crooked camera.. I've since had 2 replacements both with WiFi & signal issues, same 10/6 build date.. I will be searching Best Buy for an earlier build date or perhaps one from a more recent batch within the past week if that's even possible.

Hmm interesting. Thanks for this info I will probably go to Verizon Wednesday for a replacement or to at least test signal strength side by side with another device

I have luckily had vast improvements. Reception has been much better my note 3 compared to my s3. No more dropped calls. Always have a 3g or 4g signal as where I never had. Always on wifi at this location but finally sending out pics with ease.... This has definitely been some thick icing on the cake. I love it

I had the same problem with my wifi (slow link speed "5mbps" even tho I had great signal) I solved the problem by changing the channel on my wireless router from channel 11 to channel 10 now I have awesome Internet speed "75mbps" compared to what I had before. Try it, it might help you guys' problem also.

Mine has a build date of 10/02. I'm hoping this is just a software issue. The signal is not horrible by any means. But it seems to be slightly worse than my note 2. I had a few dropped calls the first few days I owned it(never had one with my note 2) and areas where I would at the very worst have 1 bar of 1x I now have no signal(fades in and out constantly). Sometimes I even struggle to send texts in areas that it was never an issue with the note 2. Now you've got me scared that I'll get an even worse one if I exchange it. Did you get your replacements through Verizon? How painful is the process? Also any experience getting Samsung to fix an issue like this under warranty? I'm not sure what my best option is but I only have two more days before my 14 day exchange period runs out. Fwark.

Not sure of the build date of my first Note 3 , but my second Note 3 has a build date of 10/2 and both have wifi stability issues

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=46632006&postcount=20

Tested my note 3 tonight side by side with my girlfriend's S4 and they had about the same signal strength(note was about 10dBm worse at first but quickly adjusted and was actually better for a short period). But after watching them for about 10 minutes they seemed to be almost identical. My signal seems to be a bit better more recently than it was previously(did a soft reset last night and cleared cache as well). The only time the poor performance is really noticeable is in my living room at home where I now have no service 90% of the time making it very hard to send texts and mms. Previously with my note 2 I had at least one bar of 1x most of the time and rarely lost service completely. Hoping this will improve with a software update. I don't plan on taking mine back since it seems likely to get the same or worse performance from a replacement

My wifi is strong 50mbps, its the 4g thats my issue this radio sucks compared to my 3 year old droid bionic.

I wonder how much of the signal issues has to do with the power management. The radio and s800 provide

I am in downtown San Francisco and at best have only 1 bar showing on 4G. I spoke to VZW service, the rep told me it's counter intuitive: yes San Francisco is saturated as best as VZW can as far as LTE is concerned, but because there are so many people using LTE in such a small area, connectivity is virtually "0".
Is this horse manure?

Signal loss

Hey guys, long time lurker infrequent poster. I recently got my nexus (loving it by the way) but there is 1 thing that I have noticed that kind of bugs me. Noticed everytime I'm connected to my data connection my signal bars go down considerably. (No data i get full bars 95%of the time, with hspa or hspa+ im lucky to get even 1) This will happen whether i disable my data in the settings, or connect to wifi.
I am kind of new to the whole unlocked device idea having to add the APN settings and what not, and I definitely did not have this problem with my last two devices. (Galaxy S i9000, Galaxy Nexus) if anyone has some insight that'd be great, I'm going to head down to my carrier store tomorrow, to see if they might be able to help me ( chances are probably not they're pretty useless)

Are you using a new carrier, for you? T-mobile maybe? Are you indoors?
The nexus 4 generally has very good reception, unless their is so,ethi g wrong with the device.
If your a new t-mobile customer building penetration can be low compared to other carriers.
Outside, inside, happens everywhere. And I'm on Bell. Same plan, same carrier as my last two phones.

I noticed some issues as well, but only on custom ROMs. My only conclusion is that it was something with the APN. I googled and found some APN settings to try, which has really helped me. For me, it was mostly with 3g to hspa switching, it'd toggle back and forth and would time data out. Since I've changed those, works much better. I'm on T-Mobile though.

Very very poor reception with brand new Note 3 in my house.

Just bought a Galaxy Note 3 with Verizon and the signal was pretty good until I got home.
I've been getting 1-2 bars on 4G LTE, (Which is 10-15% of the time). A good 20% I have 3G with 1-2 bars.
The rest of the time I do not even have 3G.
When i have 4G LTE the speedtest is 1.37 down, 0.20 MBps up. When I have 3G its 58 kbps down and 208 kbps up.
Completely baffles me.
Signal strength is -99dBm.
Any suggestions? I'm about to go return it and go back to my Galaxy S3 with US Cellular.
I'm not sure I qualify to post in this thread, but I am in a similar situation.
Bought a Note 3 (SM-N9005) in Europe, Romania, running on Vodafone. I have noticed weird signal variations in places where my old Galaxy S2 had no problem, both at work and at home.
Signal reception would drop from 1-2 bars HSPA+ to no signal at all, when my Note 3 reads as not registered on network.
Signal strength varies from -75 dBm to -110 dBm (when I'm close to no signal at all). I have baseband/build number N9005XXUBMJ1.
Have even contacted local Samsung office and they suggested I simply factory reset my phone to try and fix problem with poor reception.
I have googled this poor reception issue and so far found that people are complaining about it only in the USA. Maybe as time passes and more Note 3 units are sold, more people will report this.
I smell a modem update coming sometime soon because I am also experiencing worse signal than At&t in the Philadelphia area(data and voice) where Verizon holds the market share for towers around here, and there's many of them...

+1 mine hasn't gotten any better and I'm hoping a software update helps a bit. The good news is that it only affects me when I'm in low signal areas like my home(especially downstairs) where I constantly lose service completely and have to wait and hit resend when sending texts. With my thunderbolt and Note 2 I always had at least one bar of 1x or 3g. Disappointing
Sounds like I'm not alone. I didn't see this thread earlier and posted my own. My experience is pretty much what you guys are saying. As long as I'm in a good signal area everything's fine, but when in low signal areas it's in and out, if at all. These are the sane areas where my Note 2, Razr, Bionic, etc. all worked fine for calls and even had data to some degree.

Hi is the Samsung note 3 poor reception a 4.3 issue?
I'm pretty sure that Verizon has improved the reception with the MJE update... I haven't had any issues since then.

MJE fixed the issue and my Note 3 signal is almost as good as my Note 2 was...still sad tho because the Note 3 should be better in every category and its not.
Yeah signal and radio hardware needs improved by Samsung considering they are the biggest phone manufacturers.

Also still have my reception issues and dropped/missed calls. I will likely send it in under warranty sometime next month and temporarily use my old thunderbolt. I would just purchase the Note 4 first but I'm holding out for the Note Edge, hope Verizon gets it by November.

no, i recently brought a note 3 4.4.2 yesterday and i got 2 bars on three network, on my old note 2 i had full bars everywere in the house, i'm going to see if it improves when i go outside.

Weak signal, poor reception, dropped calls

Anyone else having these issues? I've noticed that places I always had at least 1-2 bars with my note 2 I will not have any service with my note 3. Also I have been dropping calls in areas that I never did. Could this be my new sim card or should I exchange my phone? I also feel that my wifi connection stability/range is slightly worse than before.

I hope this is just a first software or sim issue. Or at the very worst a first production run issue. I will likely be bringing mine to Verizon this weekend to test and new sim or exchange if that doesn't make any difference. Annoying.
Idk how much it will help you but I noticed I was in 3G a lot of the time as well. Definitely more than my N2, I switched my preferred network to LTE/CDMA instead of Global and I now have 4GLTE way more. As far as the wifi and phone reception, I myself haven't noticed any huge difference but I did read the international version of the N3 already received 2 updates and they supposedly not only improved the wifi and antenna signals but also battery life. Who knows when we'll see an update though. We are on Verizon.

Tried that and it actually made my signal significantly worse. I switched back to global and my problem seems way worse tonight than any day this week. Can barely hold onto a signal in places that I never had an issue before. Battery pull didn't help at all. I constantly get a message that says I can't send messages and then asks me to retry. Frustrating, will be going to Verizon tomorrow or Friday to return/exchange
Just now noticing this
I wonder if this has anything to do with being rooted? it seems like I just started dropping calls like crazy just today. I do remember getting the sent error on some text messages, though I can't remember if that started befor or after rooting.
Haven't had a single issue with signal or dropping calls. Also my 4G speeds are pretty insane. I'm thinking there are some units with defective radios.

[Q] anybody having weak radio reception?

Coming from a Motorola RAZR, I had LTE and 4G in a lot more locations than the Note3 is getting. Sometimes I even lose signal completely while it's switching towers. My RAZR never had this issue.
Is the antenna just weaker in the Samsungs?

Had a Razr Maxx about 8 months ago, beginning to miss that part too. Can't use wifi because of the unsolvable multicast packet wakelock/drain. In buildings where I used to get 2 bars 4G with the Note 2 its now either 2 bars 3G or 1 bar 1X if I hold the phone at the bottom (where I think the radios might be). Needless to say I pay attention during the entire class period now.
Does anyone know of a good app to refresh the network. I used to use fresh network on my rezound but it force closes on my note 3.

Living on the edge of 3G coverage...when I say edge I mean 5 ft behind my house I would drop signal on most phones. 2 bars and no dropped calls or failed to send texts I would get with the old S4. So im getting great reception.
I spend time in a remote part of north Idaho. I get 1 bar of signal, no 4G, and limited 3G (instead of 1G) when I am lucky. I previously have chosen Moto phones because of the weak signal in that area. I bought a Note 3 fully prepared to return the phone in my 14 day window and swap for the Droid Maxx if necessary. I have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of the radio reception. It is on par with my previous Droid Razr. I have no complaints.
I've noticed my N3 gets poor or no 4g reception where my Note 2 got great 4G. I also noticed it would be on 3g when I know there's 4g in the area I'm in (e.g. highway), and I also found that if I disconnected data manually or made a call and disconnected (which also disconnects 3g), sometimes it would find and connect to 4G.
I hope this gets fixed in a radio update

Signal strength horrible
Just bought a note 3 coming from a droid Bionic and original droid before that. The signal in my building is not great but my Bionic rarely had a problem with 4g. The note 3 is dropping to 3g and I have even seen 1x (haven't seen that in years). Data doesn't work half the time at work and that is an issue. Since I haven't had a Samsung before does anyone think this will be fixed? I did the update yesterday and was hoping that was this fix but nope. I was tossed between the note 3 and the droid maxx( for battery life). I still have a week to switch (for a fee of course) but the phone is awesome. However I can't live with bad reception. Does anyone have a comparison with the droid maxx for reception?
Thanks for the help.

Does the new update fix WiFi issues?

If the stupid "unstable" internet connection thing were to get fixed, I think I would finally have a perfect phone. And please don't say it's my router or that it works fine for you.... The wifi thing is a problem, and this is my second Note 3, and they both do the exact same thing. Everything else works fine with my router setup (FIOS), so to suggest that something needs changed there doesn't make any sense.
So, simply, does the OTA fix the WiFi connectivity problem?

I can't answer that unfortunately. I used to have the same problem at work (they used DLink access points which have problems with Samsung). They just replaced them all with HP hardware and I haven't had the error at all any more.
What I can say is that everything radio seems better for me with this update. I get 2 more bars for cellular reception as well as much better bluetooth clarity.

Service bars are just a visual thing. You have to check the actual reception numbers to see if your cellular reception has improved at all. I have been using my D-Link router with my Note 3 (as well as my previous S3) and the WiFi connection is rock solid. Maybe some of the networking equipment you had at work was older, but Samsung phones and D-Link equipment can connect without issue.

I'm aware that the bars can be played with by the carrier.
I used to lose my call twice on the way to work every day. Today I drove all the way without garble or a dropped call. I think the bars are real this time. I haven't checked the actual DB signal strength before so I don't have a good comparison.

I will not tell you that it's your router, because I don't think it is. However, I will tell you that I think it must have something to do with the software/hardware interface or there is something conflicting in the phone, because I did not have the "unstable" wifi issue on MJ7 at all, and after the update to MJE, I get the error every now and then.
Just my experience.

Fortunately for me, I do have the unlimited data, so I always have the option to just use the LTE signal. If I didn't, I would have had to return the phone or my bill would be through the roof. Everything else works fine with my home WiFi, but the Note 3 gives me the "your internet connection is unstable" message, regardless of my proximity to the router i.e. sitting right next to it!! At this point, with there being 2 or 3 "updates" since the phone was released, I have to say it's looking like a hardware problem. Otherwise where's the fix? BTW this is my 2nd Note 3 as I returned the first one thinking I got a lemon. The new one does the exact same thing. Wifi is a pretty basic function of a phone. If they can't get that right, I may have to think twice before I buy Samsung again. Do they not do any testing?

I asked VZW tech the same question "Don't you people test the device before it gets sold”? Like you sir this makes my 2nd note 3 I bought my first one on the edge program around the first week of NOV of this year. Do you have talk signal bars when your WiFi drops or have you noticed? What I've noticed is that when I lose signal "talk"not "WiFi", then my WiFi drops. I talked to VZW tech yesterday and they said Samsung is aware of the WiFi problem and that Samsung is working on a patch that will fix this problem. I hope Samsung fixes this problem soon because if it doesn't get fixed I will never buy another Samsung device, I'll go back to Nexus.

I found that when we're offshore and I don't have signal mine doesn't give the notice...As soon as I get service again it gives the notice. Our wifi onboard is extremely slow but it doesn't say anything when it's the only option

This instability function is faulty and should be disabled.
