So I was browsing the forms and I stumbled across this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620255
I know its not new, but that dev made an app that can create a nandroid backup with out booting into recovery. Does anyone think this would or wouldn't work for a MF3 device with a locked boot loader? I know that even if the backup worked, we still wouldn't be able to flash it, but maybe something can be reversed engineered.
Just trying to get some info on this guys. I didn't see any other post in our forum on the topic.
I didnt read through the thread much but it sounds promising possibly. Even though you couldn't flash it in recovery you MAY be able to use tibu to restore some apps or such with tibu pulling from nandroid backups. Again NOT SURE if this will even work with safestrapped folks but it doesn't sound like it would hurt to try. I do NOT have a safestrapped phone so I have no way of testing.

There would be no point in using TB to pull the apps from a nandroid. It works fine by itself AFAIK. It is actually counter productive because a nandroid uses a ton more space than a TB backup.
The reason this theory would not work is because the phone still will have a blown Qfuse. The device needs a specific encrypted key that seems to be different per device. We do not have that key or access to it. Similar topics have been discussed before.

Thanks. I guess I was thinking since those on safestrap cannot flash a nandroid backup to RESTORE at this point (or am I wrong about this?) that this MAY give them another avenue to get some apps back IF they deleted out something they shouldn't have.

Safestrap has a custom TWRP. It can do partial nandroid backups. System, data, and something I can't think of right now. Not a full nandroid though. Those can be restored as well. However restoring the same things from a regular nandroid to a SSd system will render the slot useless and will require deleting the slot and starting it over.

Cool. Thanks for the info. It is hard to help those on safestrap since I cannot test for myself. Both my S4 came with mdb/MDL so I don't have to deal with it.

I use SS and I have never had OTA MF3 on this device. I use it for testing multiple ROMs and redundancy. You can use it. Even with custom kernels. As long as you never get the OTA.

So I ran this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=915617
and it said that I had no rsa keys, so I went to my first nandroid before I switched to a custom rom nandroid backups, and a wimax.(my phones host ID I think).img existed in the folder. So I restored it.
After it was done I ran the app again, and it said that my keys were still not there. Afterwards, I went back to recovery and went to backup/restore and choose advance restore and checked the things I could restore, wimax wasn't among them, even though the file was there.
So my question: Is there anything I can do to restore them? I do have a backup.
Thanks in advance.
Have you tried using 4G? Maybe it just isn't reporting back correctly. Was your first nandroid done with the recovery the OP posted in the perm root thread where you had to manually backup the wimax keys or did you download rom manager from the market and install your recovery that way which backs them up automatically?
I have tried using 4G, but it doesn't work, I've tried other backups as well to no avail.
And it was with clockworkmod I made my backup, not manually

You could try the 2.2 ruu then reroot, maybe that would fix things don't know if the keys are individual device specific.

Tried it, but my rsa keys are still missing. Anything else to do, I have them backed up with clockwork, it just won't recognize them or restore them.
I wonder if you could push them with adb?

I think I would pm bcnice or someone from the perm root thread who seem knowledgable about such things. I only mention bcnice because in his original root instructions he had us manually back them up so I assume he probably knows how to restore the backups. I have a feeling many people would be willing to help but they probably don't frequent this board too often.
Will it work?
Yes. If it's the same device!

I tried this!!! I do not suggest it!!! Nothing went.. wrong per say.. everything restored nicely and I went on my way, but it had more lag spikes, it had random freezes while screen was off that required a reboot, and biggest of all, it semi corrupted the sdcard partition so it couldn't be accessed, I ended up just wiping my device and starting fresh, works fine now to wipe I suggest locking boot loader and reunlocking to get it really well wiped. For the record my restore was with only data which a Dev deemed safer than a full restore but sadly as he suspected, there were problems. You can I think use titanium backup on non system apps pretty safely though

My answer was as specific as your 'question'. Assuming it is N7 to N7, with both in near identical states (I.e. ROM, apps, wipes etc) then it should work. However, restoring data is usually a hit-miss affair and YMMV.
'Old' and 'new device', as you stated, only make complete sense to you and the many mind readers and/or voyeurs and stalkers

Well we are in the N7 forum, and asking to restore data from a custom rom to a stock device would just be asking for trouble, lol.
yea golden rule, dont load a backup from one device to a replacement of that same device. apps are fine through titanium backup but dont be loading nandroid backups
I do this all the time across my devices .Restore my CUSTOM TI Backup but you need to selectively choose what to restore. This works ONLY With APPS AND APP DATA. NO SYSTEM APPS OR SYSTEM APP DATA. that is how the sd card becomes currupt. Also if you do a FULL BACKUP SAY OF YOUR PHONE. then selective restore some of it to A Say your tablet with apps and app data. THIS WILL ALSO NOT WORK IN YOUR FAVOR.
FROM the old device . do a backup of APPS ONLY no (some apps will work with apps and app data) THEN Restore that on your tablet or new device . Do not make a full backup of the old device then selectivity restore from it to the new device. This can also cause issues on the new device.
Hope this is not to complicated to understand im no writer.
The above is from my own personal experience with TI BACKUP... The above is how i have been doing it for years.. GOOD Luck

installed apps . (APPS THAT WAS not part of the rom)this will work just fine to backup and restore.. Even most will restore app data.
The problem comes when restore apps from one device to another where the app when it installs sets itself for the device type . Then restored to a different device type.. The issue with system apps is it could replace some system settings or files during the restore and currupt data or apps.
I just RMA my nexus device.
Used the command "adb backup -apk shared all"
That backed up my entire device and I didn't have to be rooted or have my boot loader unlocked.
Typed in "adb restore backup.ab" on my new device and was right where I left off.
You need the latest android SDK on you PC and you also need to run those commands as administrator.
I have an "adb backup" file from a stock, first-gen Nexus 7 16GB that was damaged. We replaced it with a second-gen Nexus 7 32GB, which has been rooted without touching the bootloader. We're having trouble getting the games to recognize their data when we restore them piecemeal, so I'm wondering if it would be safe to restore the adb backup from the old device to the new device? Are there enough differences to cause problems? If it fails, will I still be able to simply do a factory reset and get the new N7 back to factory specs? We've only had the new one a few days.
Hi all,
I was hoping someone could shed sime light to my situation. I have a rogers S4 and I rooted it via motochopper and it worked fine. Restored all my apps from Titanium backuoband all was well.
This morning my phone then got stuck at the samsung boot screen and I had to wipe data via the stock recovery to get iy working again...
Can anyone tell me why this is happening? This is thr 3rd time this has happened

My guess would be the titanium backup. As it can mess things up, once in a while.

I would blame TB mess ups more on old data being restored that causes problems, than TB itself.
OP... Are your app backups from a different ROM? If so, then I would try restoring without data. Or fresh app installs.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda premium
are you restoring system apps? or just user apps? if you are restoring system apps or something like the messaging storage, will normally cause problems in TB.
best to just connect to wifi and download all the apps again from playstore.
What I would do is odin back to stock do not restore anything for a day or 2, and monitor it. If it never does it again, then it was your backup, keep in mind some apps that worked on the G3, may not work on the G4.
Yes, this is Titanium, it happenned to me too, remember that doing that is like copying everything in the C: Program Files of a PC, formating the computer and restoring that folder, it might work, but you might end up in a lot of trouble overtime since the OS installs different part everywhere. Use Carbon aka Helium, its a much cleaner way to go
I was restoring apps (with data) and the backups were from older ROMs I used in my nexus 4. I am currently trying a non-rooted method for a few days and see if this problem reoccurs

cool
Bout to get my nexus 4, will be dropped off by UPS tomorow. And i have a few questions, if anyone will be kind enough to answer.
Would it be a smart idea to unlock the bootloader and root it with TWRP recovery like the second i take it out of the box so that way i dont have to back anything up?
And then, when i decide to switch to a non stock ROM i will just need Titanium backup to backup my stuff and then im good to go?
Also, one more question, since nexus's dont have SD cards, wont my titanium backups get wiped when i flash a rom?
Thanks
1) Yes it would probably be a good idea to unlock and root right away. That's what I done with my Nexus 7. I didn't install recovery though because I wasn't interested in custom ROMs. If you're going to be flashing things right away then yes install the recovery aswell.
2) Titanium Backup will do that perfectly for you but you could always just make the backup through recovery. As you said you'll be using TWRP it means you can restore data separately from a backup anyway.
3) You don't need to worry about backups being wiped because they're stored in the internal SD. It's essentially just space to make sure important things can still be safe even if you factory reset.
Hope that helps

Btw I would recommend Helium instead of Titanium Backup for backing up your stuff. Works much more efficiently, at least for me. Helium backs up everything, apps and app data, launcher, WiFi settings, user dictionary, launcher setup, and all your SMS data. I really like it and I've fully replaced Titanium Backup with it.

Instead of titanium backup use go backup pro and save it to the cloud

After you root & unlock the device I strongly suggest you play around with the phone for a few days and see how battery is and its performance as well. After those few days if you want you could just install any rom or kernel you want. You'll thank me later. Lol

thank you all so much! I really appreciate the answers. I will look into all three of those options for backing up my data! Thank you. and the internal sd card thing makes perfect sense so thank you for that explanation. You all have a good day!

I just rooted my Note 3 and I can't find a CWM Recovery for the AT&T version. I've seen ones for N900, but I doubt that it's for the AT&T variant.
And Is there a way to flash custom roms without a recovery like CWM?
No to all of the above. There is an AT&T specific forum for all AT&T related Dev but you'll notice no recoveries and no ROMs yet, only root methods for now.
Your phone has a locked bootloader. That's why..you don't have custom recovery..

Bingo. It's a bit different but as long as I can backup I don't care and TiBackup isn't the same and frankly I don't like it at all. There's always issues with titanium so I quit using it long ago.

I feel like they both have their place. TWRP/CWM image files only restore the whole system. That means you cant even restore the backup to a different model phone. (I use this between warranty replacements of the same make/model)
TWRP also lets me make a backup of the system "as it is"... so if an update is forced to me, I can always just restore a backup to get back to the last one. IT also covers me if I change a setting that screws things up. Especially with SafeStrap .... I can always keep myself running on a virtual partition and just back it up / restore that one to stock as necessary to bail myself out.
TiBu allows me to back up any single file or app, and restore it (AND ALL IT'S DATA) on any android phone what so ever. No reboots, no touching any other files. Sometimes that app isnt ready to work on that new model ... or sometimes system apps cant be restored ...... but otherwise, it is invaluable to get my setup onto the next/upgraded phone with as little setup as is necessary. IT also lets me save older versions of my apps and restore them as necessary. Plus incremental backups means even if my phone and sd card eat **** (lost the phone and not able to recover it), I will have my apps backed up on dropbox. All I need is a new physical Note3+sd card, 2 hours to restore everything, and I'm back in business
I am a paid user of both TWRP and TiBu for this reason
The downside of these apps? They both require you to root. That means you technically void the warranty on your phone. However, there are plenty of methods available to remove all traces .. so in the end, if you care enough to spend the time, you can transform this phone between stock/unrooted/normal/warranty in effect and modified/rooted/customized/warranty void. At will
