GPS Locking Issue - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone have problems locking to the GPS? GPS Test tells me I have 25 satellites in view but only 3 to 5 are in use. I can never get a good lock in Google Maps. Navigation is pretty much useless. I am testing with a clear view of the sky.

I had the same problem, but mine was caused by a custom ROM and some xposed mods that didn't play well together. I had to do a factory reset and walk around for a couple minutes for the first lock. Then after that it got a fixed locked every time, really fast.

I do. You're the only person I've seen comment on it other than myself. I was getting pretty convinced that it was just my phone that was weak on GPS. I have to be outside to get a lock most of the time. If it's cloudy I'll only get 8 or 9 out of 17 or so.
I rarely get a lock while in my house, it's hit or miss while in a car, and not at all when in my office. I tried faster fix but that didn't help any. The on'y other phone I've owned that was this weak on GPS was my Galaxy Nexus.

I have also been having this issue. The only thing that seems to help is by enabling the Google location services, for some reason that helps the gps . However it has a negative impact on the battery. At first I though it was the custom rom but I did a full unroot and reset, and the problem persists.

I'm having the same issue on my d803 at the begging I thought it was a faulty device the one I got because I tried a factory reset and it didn't help. I tested with a Nexus 7 and a Galaxy s4 next to it and they got a lock immediately. After exchanging the phone I still have the same issue. I don't know if it is just software or also hardware related. Hopefully LG will release an update for the issue.

I'm a plumber. I use my GPS every day. My gps seems weak also. It takes a while to lock on and then its gets confused while I'm using it. I hope we can find a fix.

I use GPS regularly. With most phones I have trouble in central London but today for first time I used my g2 and it was perfect and locked quickly

Had the same issue on the Verizon variant. No matter what I tried to do while on a custom rom I couldn't get a lock in Maps or GPS Test. So I had to restore back to stock. Deleting all my internal storage in the process. Finally was able to get GPS working on this thing. I was about to exchange the device before I did this.

There have been other threads about this in the Q&A section. It seems limited to the Verizon version, but I pretty much experience the same issues as everyone here. Compass is sometimes off by 30 degrees and GPS lock takes a while. I do occasionally get placed on neighboring streets when in a downtown city area as well due to the lock accuracy.

Ya I'm having big issues too, my phone will say it has my location but have like no satellites, and gps info doesn't say it until i have lik 8+ sattellites and even then sometimes google maps doesn't show a complete lock, though I have gotton that a few times. Half the time though it just takes foerever , and i'm on verizon

Im having problems here as well. I will eventually get a lock, but will get a notification saying GPS signal lost in the middle of navigating with Google Maps. Was trying to figure out if its a Verizon phone issue or I just have a bad GPS antenna...

Same issue here. GPS checker app doesn't help much. Running Malladus. Might factory reset later on. Everytime I check GPS at work I'm several blocks in another direction from my location.

I have also noticed that it has trouble figuring out which way I am heading. Lets say my google maps has me going north, my arrow might be going north but it pointed West. Seems all screwed up.

I had the same issue. Downloaded GPS status from the play store, ran it, and now I get lock in seconds.

For me, it's not necessarily a lock issue, it's that I will have a lock and then it will tell me gps signal lost.

Since this seems mostly to be on the Verizon model has anyone compared the GPS.conf file with another to see the differences? Maybe this can be an easy fix.

I called Verizon today about my GPS. They said its a known issue with Verizon lg g2. They said the first batch may have been defective. They are sending me a new one.

I've experienced the same issue with my T-mobile G2. Only way to get a solid GPS lock is to turn on google location services. Even then the lock is "fuzzy" and accuracy is 30-80 feet.

New Evo GPS Drivers

Has anyone tried using the new EVO GPS Drivers? I'm curious is this will help us out at all. Its supposed to work with all AOSP roms I'm pretty sure. I just flshed it and will try it out later.

I think the better question is does the EVO and the Shift have the same GPS chip. Remember for the most part they're different phones.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
I actually flashed them on to my shift without knowing and they worked great. Got 9/9 satellites in GPS status in less than 30 seconds, but now my GPS is acting wonky, really hard to get a lock and lucky if I get 1 satellite. It would be really nice if we could get a developer to port those drivers to speedy.
what tells you that that driver is better than the one the shift already have?
evo and the shift are the same in name only.

Just read the threads. People are enjoying a vast improvement in GPS performance with those drivers. I PMed Galandy to see if he can help with Speedy.

But it appears that your gps is acting up now right? So maybe the phone the drivers are made for gets improved GPS not so much every phone because like ronoverdrive said the only thing the evo and shift have in common is name, internals are totally different

I've never had issues with my GPS.
IT would be nice if there would be an update for the shift GPS drivers, mine always shows me like a block away from my actual location its frustrating as hell. Its the only drawback I have had switching from a Transform to the Shift.

Yeah I'm sure. Because the other drivers flash something.supersonic.so and the rom wouldn't use that on shift it would use the speedy.so library.

Our GPS like many Android phones are not pure GPS units and are actually Assisted GPS (AGPS). Rough location is first acquired from the network tower's or WiFi address's geo-location while the GPS attempts to get a satellite lock for a more refined location lock. This network dependence is why you can almost always get a fast lock on your phone and not on dedicated GPS units.
Well i had not openen maps or anything since my last flash and with no network on and no wifi on my gps still found me within 3 meters

Ok so I have to ask. Why do you say "turn off the setting for use WiFi Networks" ? I'm not saying your wrong I just want to here your logic. Because, any time Google Maps or Navigation has any issues locking on a location. The recommended thing to do is Turn On WiFi . Here's some interesting reading for you:

Because it turns off the Network Assist and forces your phone to get a true GPS lock instead of just timing out. Network Assist is needed for when you can't get a location lock or to speed up the process. As far as Google Maps is concerned a rough location is better then no location when a narrow location GPS lock is taking a long time to acquire.

Very true, and I'd like to keep wifi assist off if possible but it seems that it just doesn't work that way. I think that might have been the problem I was experiencing was due to having wifi off.

The thing is I was able to get a GPS lock indoors in my house with 9/9 satellites. Don't remember if Wifi assist was on or off. But I'm trying it in the office right now with wifi assist on and can't get 1 satellite with wifi assist on.

Are you on the stock ROM? If not, that might be the issue (because of the modifications made to it something could've gone wrong in that specific ROM.) You could also attempt to use Phone Info from the play store if it simply just doesn't work in the dialer. There's not many people that have issues doing this, so it could be that you might just have to reset your phone if all else fails.
doesnt force close on me.

Just Tried it again on CFX SR1 W/ brixked 0.6 and got an FC. I got it stock as well.
But from what ive heard you will not kick into HSPA+ mode until you put a strain on your conection. IE: Idling/web browsing/facebook will not bring you up to HSPA:15 (you can check you HSPA Channel in the settings--->about phone--->Status and then look at mobile Network Type). Knowing that i live in a well covered area i was upset that i couldnt get full 42mbps. But as my research and expereince has shown i can get it, just only when its necessary.
NOW, im not a wireless tech, im not even a rocket scientist, but i have done alot of reasearch and the data matches my hypothesis so ill lay it out for everyone to tear apart.
HSPA+ 42M works by using a Dual Carrier signal, which of course uses a bit more power than a single carrier. So even if you have a perfect -0dbm signal strength, you will only see HSPA:10 [ aka 21mbps ] in your network type. BUT, if you put a load on your connection ( in my case i took a multi hundred meg file into dropbox and then downloaded it) you will see the speeds increase signifigantly past the first little bit of data transfer, and if your are quick about it or cook up some sort of widget or overlay you can see the phone kick up to "high gear" and use the HSPA:15 channel.
i have also seen this in effect with larger apps. For instance the Ingress update that i got earlier today downloaded in these steps: 756k - 1.3Mb - 3.5mb installing. in ~ 10 seconds.
tl;dr Phone idles in low speed mode, goes to high speed when needed.
So if you want to test for yourself and have a bit of data left on your account (in 3 test i burned ~ 250MB) start a big download and then quickly switch to a view of the network type.

Well no one has a solution or an actual idea about what the problem is so I guess we will just be waiting x amount of time for a fix. Maybe a ROM dev can look into this and fix the issue because it'd be really nice to use the new 1900mhz bands. Can someone do a log cat and see what the issue is? No laptop ATM.

I really dislike how the Nexus 4 can't do simple things well

Such as staying connected to my WiFi, or my cellular data connection, or being able to reliably turn Bluetooth on and off. Seriously, these are the things that should just work. On every other phone I've ever owned I've never had a problem with any of these things, let alone all three.
Overall I like the N4 and the positives outweigh the negatives and I plan to keep it for quite a while. But I sure hope these basic things will be corrected in an update soon.
I can help you with that. There is a app that will make you life very easy, it's called "power toggles"

If so, ROM/kernel?
Also, what errors are you exactly getting? Or you can provide a logcat.

Seemed like phone was having issues staying connected to network, but it cleared up, so I'm guessing it was T-Mobile's issue.

I'm having the exact same issues. When attempting to browse the play store I constantly get the " cannot connect to the play store" and I have to hot retry several times before I can continue. This happens every 10 minutes or so and it's driving me crazy. Also when skiing any type of downloading on my Wi-Fi I get awful speeds. I'm talking an hour to download a podcast but it only taking my iPhone 5 approx 10 minutes to download the same podcast. Something is definitely wrong however I bought this phone from someone else so I can't RMA it so think I'm screwed.

You might want to try a different channel or something with your router if you are seeing disconnections a lot. Also is this happening on multiple wifi connections or just on your home one? With Bluetooth I don't really use it so cannot comment on it.

For here the WiFi signal until it looks good on the phone, but no data transfer occurs. From what I've been reading this is happening to many people. I think google should be manifested.
If hardware problem until I change the router, but at least tell me what works. They are anxious to get the phone's SD reader to avoid confusion and leave this problem in WiFi. Just missing they release the next nexus without WiFi to avoid this kind of problem.

Seemed like phone was having issues staying connected to network, but it cleared up, so I'm guessing it was T-Mobile's issue.
Also, with Franco kernel and custom color settings and volume boost, this phone is near perfect.

I'm having the exact same problem with the connection having issues every two minutes, making games hard to play with connection errors. Are you certain it's a T-Mobile issue?

I have T-Mobile and my signal is rock steady. Call support and see if they are working on a tower in your area.

Blue data bars, still no Internet.

It's as simple as it sounds - my data bars are full strength and blue, but trying to open web pages or the Play Store yield a "connection timed out" error for everything. Streaming music, trying to sync my gmail, nothing works. But my data bars are blue.
I'm on stock everything, rooted with cwm (but I don't think that would affect the radio at all). I even reflashed the stock radio file from the Google factory image. Still no dice.
Anybody got a fix for this?

I would like to look into any possible solution before giving up and trying to RMA it.
I had this issue all day everyday. Showed 4g but nothing. Never found a solution. Called Google, explained the situation. They didn't even attempt to troubleshoot. Just sent new phone so I assume there may be no fix. Have not had a problem since. Check your Sim card first though.

That's interesting. It didn't start giving me issues until today (this is the third day I've owned it) so perhaps it is indeed a dud. I'll give a new sim card a shot tomorrow when I go to work.
Where / what number did you call to get in contact with Google?
This has happened to me on occasion. I toggle airplane mode on and off, and then data comes back. It doesn't happen too often, though.

Ok, I'll give that a shot. If that works I'll give it another day or two before RMA-ing it, I'd prefer to not have to deal with issues like that if I'm well within the exchange policy, ya know

My problem with Gmaps is the need for it to use data.
Is definitely GPS and not data lost?
Maybe try navfree, only uses GPS after it downloads required maps?

It's not a data issue, I can surf and check email just fine. Speedtest.net results are fast.
This happened again when I was in LA.
And the pointer thing never points in the direction the car is actually moving.
Gmaps thinks that I'm drifting my car when I'm driving normal!
Only ever when I enter a lengthy tunnel.
Never just randomly for no apparent reason.
The arrow going backwards or sideways, on the other hand....
Every device I own (which is a lot, about 13) does that. In every navigational app. It's a hilarious bug. (the Police disagreed on the hilarity of it when they pulled us over because I was sitting with my back towards the road (as a passenger.). "Blame Google, they said we were going backwards!")
My location services also tends to pick out random locations to display in other apps as my current location.
Awkward conversations in Facebook as a consequence: "What the hell are you doing in the arse end of Serbia?" "I'm in Vienna." "Not according to Facebook." "It's lying." "Or you are. What're you up to?" "That's moderately disturbing."
I don't use Google maps much. Roaming is a nightmare on a continent where there's a border every 400-600km. Mostly use MapsWithMe. I don't require a route planner, I can read a map. As a bonus, it doesnt require the locations permission for Gapps.
I used to use NavFree, but it couldn't distinguish between a country road, theme park ride and bicycle lane. (That was interesting.) And then they made the maps free for only a year, so I moved on to a better app.

Not sure how long ago you used navfree but it's been good for me so far and I didn't see anything about free for only 1yr?
I'll check outl mapswithme but the free version looks a bit too lite.
I have the same issue since the latest update. I am straggling to get a gps lock. Also have the issue with the pointer always facing north. i think Samsung tried to fix the AT&T gps issue and scr*** everyone else
What are you all on,JB or KK?
Not having the issue,
Kitkat DBT XXUENB7/XXUENB1/DBTENB2
Maps version 7.7.0 (I have auto update fully disabled. Don't fix what isn't broken is my motto.)
