voiding warranty - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

I just learned through Samsung Chat that if you FLASH your device with anything, you void your warranty. Even their official JB.

So by Samsung Chat logic, that includes OTA and their favorite support "suggestion" KIES..... Don't think so. From everything I've read, really depends on region, the support center willingness (some have successfully reported warranty repair on fully rooted and customised devices) and (un)enforced local consumer laws. It's really "hit and miss".

I have been informed (not personally confirmed) that the P6800 JB 4.1.2 MD3 firmware does not have a flash counter.....
In any case, all my ICS & JB kernels are Triangle Away app compatible, and able to reset if need be.
We all know that in almost every case, any "damage" caused by flashing is actually the result of GUI (general user incompetence). Failure to research, read, prepare and follow guides/instructions properly are the main cause. Not the act of flashing.

As I said, can be really "hit & miss".... consumer laws/protection aren't always enforced either, if there are indeed any at all ....
Edit: GUI could also mean Gross User Incompetence too lol.
We've all done silly things, misread and GUI, just hope the results aren't too bad and recoverable...

[Q] unlock bootloader void xp warranty?

Hi fellows,
So far I find the common way to unlock bootloader is to require an unlock code from sony by providing IMEI no. And we will be warned that it will void warranty.
However, I am confused that so many fellows use custom rom. So is it ture that those fellows just simply don't care the warranty or they still have it?
I know there might be some other threads talked about this, but i just havent find the answer.
I do not know what the situation is in your country, but here, sony isn't responsible for my warranty. They cant void it.
Still, i haven't seen anyone brick their play permanently yet. so the risk is low and the gain high.

i meant, for sony, if i understand well, we need to request unlock code from sony by giving the imei of device. i guess they may have record of this?
or is there any easier way to unlock bootloader? i am new to xp, and my previous anroid device doesnt have bootloader lock.
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
Well, lets look at it objectively.
They say: "Warning! If you perform this step, you will unlock the boot loader and which may void your warranty."
correct me if i'm wrong here, but that doesn't sound like you just lost your warranty. It sounds like sony wanting to make you think you did.
I suppose that if you completely fry it by over-clocking to far, or mistakes flashing, thats your risk. but say a screen or button that stops working should always be under warranty, regardless of your bootloader.
When Sony published the bootloader unlocking page, they let things clear. Unlocking the bootloader per se doesn't void your warranty, installing custom software (such as rooting and custom ROM) will do.

Samsung working on eMMC hardbrick fix...or not ?

Does anybody know what Samsung is doing about hardbrick issue ?
Latest news from Daniel Hillenbrand was on Jun 8 (He contacted Samsung and:
Patches will be out in form of new official ROMs and also sourcecode releases after testing, which might take some time

Even secure erase is not 100% guaranteed to cause damage. It turns out it will only cause damage when the eMMC is in a certain specific state. I don’t want any details, but after reading all the threads, information from Ken Sumrall and posts on Samsung official support forums, I think that they don’t want to admit, that there’s a problem with their eMMC chips. I know that it is almost impossible to recreate brickbug situation on stock devices - so there is no problem for Samsung at all (custom rom - not their problem) .
I just don’t know what to think – Samsung is currently Rolling-out the Official ICS 4.0.4 Update for Galaxy S2 and we all know, that each of them contains unsecure kernel (all they need to do is disable emmc_cap_erase, right? )
I may be wrong, maybe fix is a lot more complex than just disabling emmc_cap_erase in kernel, but this is the difference between secure and unsecure kernel…so why they didn’t ? Everyone knows about eMMC bug, but Samsung is rolling out new updates and don’t care…
Its Simple They moved on .......
They dont want to spend their time and energy on this phone instead they are thinking about s4 or galaxy note 2
No, they are not. It's so simple to fix hardbrick bug... But Samsung is not interested at all, and seems that it's a computer working on the builds, not real people, since they still releasing this crap. Samsung super fail.
They just don't care and why should they?
The stock Firmwares are noobproof, but if some geeks from XDA D) flash custom Roms its already not their business because a usual customer never even get accidentally into a recovery where he could wipe the phone.
So, they say users fault. Why invest $$$ for a few people who already figured out themselves how to avoid that bug on an "old" device.
Business.Simple as that.

I think there is a fix - I heard a couple XDA members saying that they've got a PIT file to fix the problem. Though all it does is make a new /data partition, and you lose a bit of your space (8GB instead of 11GB)

new samsung galaxy s3

Hello everyone.
I have just bought a new samsung galaxy s3 from china. I want to unlock it and install the newest firmware, all at the beginning before i start installing applications and changing settings the way i want them. For start the phone is sim locked and in Cyprus, where i live, i have to unlock it. The only procedures i saw up to now includes root of the phone which automatically means void of warranty. I don't really mind of it but is there any way to do it without this result? How about changing the phone CSC, is that going to help or this has nothing to do with radio?
I also want to install jelly beans but iam not really sure if the official rom for this model is on the market. Any help and any links would be appreciated!
Thanks!

I doubt it. Try reading the warranty card that came with your phone. It states that the warranty is valid only in the country of purchase, AND with a proof of purchase (such as invoice, fiscal document, whatever).
Besides, since your model was bought in China, it may not be a GT-I9300, but a variant (such as GT-I9300T, or any other letter after the "9300"). That info will be under the battery, in the labels in its compartment.
If - and only if - your phone is not exactly a GT-I9300 (w/o any letter after that), flashing an I9300 ROM or kernel to it may brick the phone.
Before doing anything to your phone, read a lot fo stuff in these forums, to minimize your chance of bricking your phone, and get a greater understanding of what and why you'll be doing to your phone.
Anyhow, forget about your phone's warranty: a rooted phone is a lot better than a stock phone.
Thank you very much i will keep that in mind. As far as i know it is GT-I9300 and for the warranty i haven't read it yet but i will.
Ok i finally recieved my phone but when i opened it i was really sad to find out that the software was completely chinese! So i tried to download the SGS CSC selector app to install a european csc but the only way to download it is by google market, something that i am unable to do since there is not even the google play app in the phone!! All About KNOX (discussions, questions, new information etc.)

from mj2 rom release (leak, pre official) there is knox integrated in system and shows one counter in download mode like Official bit = 0
so i made this thread for our beloved note 2 's newer firmwares knox issues and informations.
you can also contribute to help people of note 2 community worldwide and solving this issue.
hope i can update this thread as soon as i can.
and all the info for knox for now can be found in below sites.
Wiki knox
Reasearch thread from s4 forum
Samsung.com
all about knox from samsung
samsungknox.com
and i know theres knox research thread for s4 but i think its reasonable to have for note 2 too bcoz its very diff device and here local help can be available other then asking on s4's thread.
As far as I know there is a specific chip on the motherboard where knox increments the flashing.
1st of all since this is a "feature" that came with the note 3, I think we are kind of safe since that specific cip was not integrated on the mb. I'm not sure that even the s4 has one.
Non the less the counter some how could be emulated in the bootloader and thus tricking us in thinking that knox is emplemented.
Some more experienced people sooner or later will figure it up.
My advice is that if you still have warranty think twice before flashing.

u are right to wait.
but knox is integrated in all kernels, framework and bootloaders. so it may rise a flag as in s4 and note 3 roots, downgrading and etc.
they have this since one exact month and theres no way they can reset it and they got warranty voided.
and s4 doesnt have this kind of efuse chip on mb but still they have all flags i think.

I don't have any problems with KNOX. I mean almost.
I have done more than 3 factory resets since i'm using 4.3
The only problem i have with KNOX (i like it) is that after i install it
my Note start to tell me after update on some basic apps
"External StorageSpace left 1.55 MB".
Without KNOX i don't have this massage.

The current firmware mi6 doesn't have knox integrated, it is just an app but in the new pre official leak mj2 has knox integrated into the bootloader.. Which is hard to bypass as the firmware won't boot with any older bootloader thus there will be knox counter raise on flashing custom recovery or rooting the device.. I haven't still got into details myself but there should be a way of downgrading to older boot and firmware for claiming warranty.. And I guess the s4 community will probably get some work around as they are in deeper problems with official 4.3 has realese for them. It's just a matter of waiting and watching now.

hey guys, are there any limitations in flashing after updating to FW containing Knox? I mean, i don't care if it sets knox flag to 1, i already don't have any warranty. I'm just asking because people everywhere are speaking only about warranty when it comes to Knox. But are there any other restrictions like missing possibility of downgrade, or unability of flashing custom ROMs?

Look here http://omegadroid.co/wanted-knox-void-warranty-0x1/ for instance and KNOX cannot be reset atm. You can root with Towelroot without tripipng KNOX but flashing a kernel or custom recovery will set KNOX on 0x1. Yes, tripping KNOX will void warranty in some regions depending on local laws. In the EU it doesn`t unless the oem can prove that rooting was the cause of the defect.

Knox doesn't matter to most people. Samsung will, particularly in North America disavow a warranty if Knox is tripped. But most people don't deal with Samsung for warranty issues. They deal with their carrier and most carriers don't care about Knox. And stronger consumer protection legislation in the EU means that your warranty rights cannot be summarily dismissed. You signature suggests that you may be in the EU in which case it isn't likely an issue for you. Do a forum search to see how your carrier, which you neglected to name, handles warranty claims.
A forum search would have given you better answers to all of your questions. You would find threads demonstrating that Knox can be reset. But it has only been demonstrated in limited and experimental conditions so far. It's not yet clear how widely that could be applied and isn't likely to be easily accessible to you anytime soon. A custom recovery, custom kernel or some older root methods will trip Knox.
If you are unwilling to trip Knox, then use towel root which shouldn't increment Knox and Safestrap to run your ROM. It's a lot more cumbersome and limits your choices. But you pick your poison and drink it.

Towelroot uses an exploit so it won't trip your KNOX counter.
Using regular root on the GS5 trips KNOX.
But as stated above, flashing a custom recovery, kernel or ROM will trip KNOX regardless.
