How do I activate a phone on a custom rom - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hello all, I'm looking to find a way to force hands-off activation on a custom ROM.
So far I have tried most of the custom ROMs available for our device but because my carrier is Credo I still can't get 4G to work even if it's supported. I've tried changing APNs and copying the activation.apk from the stock ROM to system but I can't seem to get it working. Any ideas?

Normally on a sprint Roms its ##72786#

Tried it but I have only had it work on the stock sprint ROM. The code does nothing with aosp, cm, carbon, paranoid. Attempted to copy hidden.apk to system to add the feature but was only able to get basic functions and not hands-free activation.

Well of course since those are sprint codes they will only work on touchwiz. That's given.

Well..yes. That was the point of this thread. To get it working on other ROMs.
I'm trying to force my phone to do the hands-free activation(what sprint/credo does) on a custom ROM so I can get 4G working. I have flashed various other ROMs and lost my 4G then subsequently got it back by doing the hands-free activation so I know that's what I need to do.There has to be a way to do it on non-tw,not all sprint/credo phones use touchwiz.

You didn't specify "other Roms" as purely AOSP/CM based. I was under the impression that you meant Roms like Sacs, Triforce, Etc.

My apologies, I wasn`t clear enough.
The ROMs I have used are: triforce, paranoid, google edition, xtremperia, aosp(3 different ROMs) carbon, slim-bean and nowiz.

Why don't you so a backup and just install a tw ROM then do the code later just restore to your original ROM?

Tried that as well but the activation doesn't stick after a flash. I'll get 3G but not 4G. Also tried backing up APNs and doing a restore but no dice.

Forgive me for adding the obvious, but have you tried to update profile and prl via the settings menu? All I have ever done in the past.

Yeah tried that for the TW ROMs but theres's no option on AOSP or CM based ROMs

Did you ever figure this out?

Is the nandroid back up the same thing as making a backup in TWRP recovery? If so, I did that. I also flashed the rooted stock rom and activated my phone. I then restored from the backup I made. Now, I'm back on Google Play Edition ROM and I can now make/receive call/messages, but I cannot get any cellular data! Any ideas on that?

No. Clean flash. Activation is done at Setup. That's why you make the backup, then you can just restore after you activate it.

The Kernal is the VERY core of the Luiux system. It's the heart if you will. It is boss, what you tell it to do, it does. for the good and for the bad. Rooting gives you direct access to the Kernal, called "SU" Super User Access, or in temp. access "sudo" but that's a different story.
This comic explains it a little.

Over-clocking is making the processor work faster than it was designed to work. so our baseline is 1.0Ghrz. With a Kernal that allows for overclocking we can get to speeds like 1.5Ghrz or anywhere in between. gives a smoother, faster overall experience.
OK , so is it worth putting on the phone? Im using stock sense for now then Im going to switch to iced. I jusst cant seem to stick to the other roms. So how would I put a different kerna; and o/c.

Iced Glacier may have an overclocked Kernal already installed into the ROM. I do not know much about Iced Glacier. You'd have to check out that thread.

Cyanogen is a pure AOSP ROM, it doesn't have many bells and whistles and it's not "prettied up" to make it appealing. It's bare bones vanilla android. Like what the Nexus Line and the G2 use.
I have nothing against Iced Glacier, It's a good ROM that is turning some impressive numbers. However i personally prefer the sock look and feel of android.
im thinking of trying it out, anything special I need to know or add?

Not Really. Zinx has done an AMAZING job with this ROM. Just follow their wiki-page and you'll be good to go. It's easy to understand and very straight forward.
just make sure to do a nandroid backup of your current ROM. And save it on the SDcard and on another means of media. You don't want something to go south and not be able to get your phone back to a "stock look".
yeah I know, ive tried eVil HD and Z and its juss not my taste.

To carry applications and data over use Titanium Backup, you can get by with the free one, but i highly suggest the paid version.
the "google addon" or "GAPPS" is the Google Talk/GMail/Google Maps/Market applications. Those are not "open source" like the ROM is so you have to add those on to the end of flashing a ROM.

Couple of questions
Are you perma-rooted?
do you know if s=on or s=off
have you flashed a custom recovery image?
Android Zoom : Titanium Backup can be found here
Make sure you have a barcode scanner for "androidzoom"
Im perma-rooted, Im s=off
what you mean by flashed a custom recovery image? all I've done is ROMS, mods and font.

After you wipe and flash cyanogen, flash the GAPPS. That simple .
Sorry for all the question but i don't want to tell you to process "d" and we've skipped a, b, or c.
No problem I understand . So you mind explaining titan better to me, i have it installed.
EDIT: Another question a little off topic.. Can i use any font I want or only those here on the forum?

What you will want to to is at the bottom of Titanium you will see a "got problems". click on it and down load busybox. fairly quick and small footprint protocol deal. What it does is will back up all of your applications to your SD card. So when you wipe > flash ROM > reboot you can use titanium back up to restore everything.
Click on schedules > edit > and make it "back up applications and user data" then click run.
That will back every thing up
Then when you reboot you can : Got problems > download busy box > applications and restore the ones that have a greenish color "M" next to them.
And it's like you never left.
as far as fonts go i recommend using the ones found Here. Or downloading and using the ones in an applications called "root tools".
Thanks, going to give this a shot now

I followed the link to unlock the bootloader and it says its not available. Is there a method to unlock without the option for Sony website?
As far as I know, no bootloader unlock. Also don't think anyone is working on it. Not sure though.

You can find custom recovery here:

I'm afraid that so far no luck with custom roms because only ones for this device are cm or aspects based wich include custom kernel. We need developers for custom roms with stock kernel.

[Q] Data Connection in CM7

cyanogenmod prl update

hello
First off, I have modded with cyanogenmod quite some time ago.
I have kept that up date (cause of their nice update program), but I have never updated the carrier roaming lists (PRL?). My coverage seems to be crappy and I think it just may have to do with my newbishness.
I am running Cyanogenmod 11-20141112-SNAPSHOT-M12-jflte
Sprint PRL = 55018
is there a retard guide for me to easily update.... any suggestions or links would be great. I have spent over an hour searching google, but I am obviously using the wrong keywords and I am getting frustrated. I keep stumbling across other models / mods and I am fearful of breaking something....
Thanks for your time

sorry for being a pain, but as I dont do this often...
if I flash the zip here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257503
this will put me back to TouchWIz original (plus root)
then I will follow the rest of the steps
(sorry for being dense, I was incorrectly thinking that I would loose the ability to use clockworkmod recovery / restore functions once I flashed the touchwiz rom and I would have to root before I could restore cyanogen, but that is firmware not ROM..... )
Its late and I have been up forever...
Thanks
I need some help.
Using Clockworkmod recovery V 6.0.4.7.
Tried using http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-rooted-stock-roms/ >>>> "Download Galaxy S4 rooted Stock ROM Sprint SPH-L720 Latest MF9 "
checked the filesize and the md5 sum, all good.
WHen I tried to use CWM to install zip from SDcard1 it gave me an error (missing 4 of 5) and aborted the installation.
I tried to search somewhere else to find a .zip that would bring the Sprint SPH-L720 back to stock, however they all seem to not have .zip for CWM recovery however make use of ODIN (which i cannot use as I dont have a windows computer, I use linux)
I want to go back to stock to update the prl before going to cyanogenmod 12.1
any suggestions ?
thanks
qu1nn
Rough night here.
somehow I lost clockworkmod recovery and ended up being still rooted with stock mf9 recovery, but I still had cyanogenmod 11 working; I recovered by installing clockworkmod application; > model > flash clockworkmod recovery > shutdown.
In the midst of that fiasco I say this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2296167
which implies that keeping the PRL as up to date is not so required.....
so I bailed after several different attempts to install a ROM that would allow me to do a prl update.
I flashed the latest cyanogenmod nightly 12.1 and I am off and running.
qu1nn

Any ROMs out there for a unlocked bootloader rather then SafeStrap?

Is there anything out there that will work flashed with a real recovery rather then just SafeStrap?
With the recent bootloader unlock, I'm curious whats currently available? and what might actually work, will anything we currently have work?
Or does everything have to be customized to work now that we have a true bootloader unlock?
I would like to toast this thread, I should have responded to the post under me, but forgot to check for one.

I'm just got around to trying Jasmine I've been flashing everything under the sun all night, CM13, Dirty Unicorns, and now Jasmine but
a bunch of other stuff also.
I'm having trouble connecting to my 4G LTE data on all of them including Jasmine,
is there some modem firmware I should be flashing over these ROMs after installation?
A couple ROMs did include firmware flashing instructions but I wasn't sure if that was relevant
if coming from OF1 to a unlocked bootloader and then flashing a custom ROM.
Too be fair though its hard to pick out which instructions are relevant when the bootloader
is unlocked and you have a real recovery, and which doesn't apply to us, since the instructions
usually aren't written with that in mind. =/
I've never seen this before with ROMs on other phones.
Anyone having issues with non-Verizon server providers especially MVNO's like Straight Talk (Verizon)?
Thanks for the info that its working for most people and should be working, I wonder
what my issue with it is then.
I've been trying to enter in a custom Access Point Name on a bunch of the ROMs, unfortunately Jasmine's seems to be greyed
out and I can't add a custom one.
Cellular phone calls are working, but data is not though Dirty Unicorns did have 1X data working but that is the best
I've come up with so far.
I just need to deliver something usable on this phone so my uncle can wait for a CM release that mostly works.
We were worried about a update being shipped out on the stock ROM updating over the bootloader unlock,
so we went ahead and tried some of the custom ROMs everyone has have generally positive results with.
After a long time playing around with it I accidentally formatted my TWRP backup of the stock ROM not paying
enough attention, which I should have backed up to a real hard drive.
I originally came to this trying to get hotspot working since he's on a MVNO the stock Verizon Note 3 ROM
won't hotspot or tether, and he has no other options for a little internet access out in the boonies.
Now I'm in a odd situation having to deliver something that works well enough for him to wait it out for a
CM release.
And don't know if flashing stock will lock the bootloader again or if I should flash it with Odin or if I can flash a stock
image with TWRP and where to get one for that.
I would prefer not to have to do that though.

Jasmine rom 6.1 works perfectly just download and flash the zip in twrp. Don't forget to do a full wipe like in the picture below.

In the Jasmine installation instructions should I be following anything related to the developer edition?
FLASH lk_hltevzw-v6.4.zip in recovery after flashing the Jasmine ROM image?
And in our situation should I be flashing the firmware with Odin after the install as per the Developer Edition instructions?
Or just flashing Jasmine and rebooting?

No disregard the instructions about the kernel if your bootloader is from the 0F1 firmware update. A custom kernel needing to be flashed was only for developer editions because the bootloader was unable to be upgraded without locking the device. Hence tweaks to the kernel were needed to run the rom with no issues. It doesn't apply to you if you unlocked your 0F1 bootloader.

Got any ideas for someone who has successfully flashed Jasmine before but then went
and tried a bunch of ROMs to see if they would work but then when I was done
went back to flash Jasmine and now it infinitely boots never stops after flash?
[Solved]
Weird I cannot get Jasmine to boot without flashing the kernel, but I can get her
to boot with it.
I'm really thinking I need a clean slate on this.
