Flashing red light of Death! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey xda'ers my nexus 4 just crapped out with the flashing red light of death. I've read it's just a dead battery and I should let it charge overnight. My situation was I am currently using slim bean 4.3 and was flashing between kernels, went from faux to semaphore to hells core and on hells I ran antutu and after that my phone went into a coma. I had a full battery when flashing so I'm at a loss as to why the flashing indicates a deader than dead battery. Any help appreciated.

Try this before anything else:
Plug in the factory charger to the wall and to your device for 1 minute. Wait to see if a battery charging symbol appears on screen. If it does then press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds. If the aforementioned battery icon doesn't appear then plug your device in again but this time for one hour. After one hour of charging disconnect the cable then quickly reconnect it after waiting one second. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds. The device should power on, if not repeat the last sequence of steps but substitute the one hour of charging with 10hrs of charging (overnight).
I hope it works for you, Report back and give an update!

Thanks dude I'll give it a try. I did see the battery icon with the charge symbol in it for a second when I plugged it in. I'll follow your steps and see where that gets me. And really, can the battery suddenly just drain like that? I mean I had 98% or more. I think I have a haunted phone. Thanks again.

Edit: ok just tried powering it on and I got to the Google boot screen then death again. I'll let it sit overnight then try again. Thanks for the guidance Sir.

While its very strange and very uncommon, it can happen. It could be the result of something seemingly unrelated too, its hard to say. I've had it happen to me once with another device. Good luck with the charging though! I'm more than happy to help

If it's boots up with 0% battery I think that you should try to use another battery and to see if it was a battery problem.

Oops..Yes my bad, so take it to service center and tell them to change your battery.

Well I let it sit overnight charging and the red light still flashing. I can get the phone to Google boot screen then nothing. Screen goes black and back to the flashing. I can't get onto fastboot mode or recovery mode to flash to stock no button combos work. So I guess either I send it back to LG or maybe send it to josh(conexxion2005 on xda) and see if he can help. Thanks guys for all the help guys but I think I'm dead in the water. I do have a tiny T6 torx for my Oakley sunglasses I think will work on the phone I'm tempted to take it apart myself to look at things.

The last thing you can do [and the only which fix this kind of problem] is turn off device, open the back case [2 screws], remove the battery flex cable and put it back.
Now try...before you RMA it.

I'm gonna try that but now I just realised that my T6 torx isn't small enough to get the screw's out. I'll take it to work and try to mess with it there. Seeing as my device is rooted and various other they'll surely not warranty it. But I'll try not to @#$% it up any further.

I wouldnt worry about rooting etc with regard to warranty. You can return in to stock in about 5 minutes with fastboot

From what I understand, as the battery is well- cheap and crap if you run a benchmark and the system draws a lot of power it can knock itself out due to the voltages or something.

Phone got hot and won't turn ON anymore

Yo folks,
My bro's PLAY is on 2.3.3 [the latest update available here] which I had updated via SEUS. Today, after gaming a bit my bro told me that the battery dropped to 13% from well over 60-70%. Also, the phone was pretty hot...
I pulled the battery out and let it sit for over an hour. I then plugged in the battery, and now the Phone won't start - it just shows the blinking RED Led. Nothing on screen whatsoever. I don't think it's powering on at all.
Any idea what to do next, i'm pretty stumped
p.s. Phone is on stock firmware, unrooted.
well u could try another battery in there if thats possible
the xperia x10 has the same battery
so if u cant find some one with the same phone
u can use one of those

Thanks.. I actually have a X10 myself, but it's with my bro atm.. and i've come at another place earlier today for a couple of days with his PLAY.
I've plugged it in and it's still showing the blinking RED led. I'll wait and see what happens..
AFAIK the blinking red Light indicates the Battery is completley drained and does not have enought juice to turn the device on .. let it charge up a bit and see if it turns over.. then give the device a FULL charge .

Yeah... I have it hooked up to a charger for 2 hours now, still only blinking red led and not powering up.
Does it take that long?

Thanks.. did that now, but nothing happened - phone did not start up.
It's been hooked up to the wall charger for a little more than 2.5 hours now. Still only the steadily blinking red LED [led blinks every 5 seconds].
Any ideas? I'm starting to get worried

Yeah, my bro bought it like 3 months ago.
Only suggestion I have left is to take it to where you bought it and get it replaced under warranty.
If it's from a carrier call them and ask for a replacement mailed to you while it's being fixed cuz you don't want to use a different phone model.

Okay guys, I came back home, and charged the PLAY's battery upto 50% in my X10. So the PLAY now boots up & I also hooked it up to my machine and did a re-install of the 2.3.3 update. Now it's back to original state, with only the market logged in and my bro's contacts restored from SDcard.
However, it still does not charge as normal. It actually is DISCHARGING, instead of charging up when connected to the wall charger. And it still gets hot
Could it be a hardware fault?

I had taken it to the dealer earlier today, but unfortunately the Sony Ericsson service center we have in my city was closed today because nobody showed up there due to heavy rains.
I have to go back there tomorrow... let's see.

Well, the phone is at the service centre atm and they have kept the phone + charger [without battery tho].
They're going to reflash it n ****... I have to go back in a few hours to check the status.. wish me luck
Update : It is a hardware fault and I'm getting a replacement in 10-15 days. The service center asked me to leave the phone there and gave me a job sheet. The replacement phone will be sent to the dealer and i'll need to pick it up from him.

My Samsung Galaxy S2 is ded

Hi,
I was right in the middle of a meeting, my SGS2 was on the table and it kept flashing for apparently no reason! By flashing I mean going from sleep mode (dark screen) to lock screen. There was non incoming call or messages, no running application. So, as this was weird to me and it was disturbing every one, I tough it could stop doing this if I restarted it. I made a long press of the on/of key thinking it would reset the system! Since this time the phone turns off to never wake up! Is there something I can do to have it back to life?
Thank you for your help!

When I got home I connected it to the computer, I've wait some times as nothing happened I took it to press the power buton but, it was so hot that I had to drop it to avoid burning! I unpluged it, I put a fan on if and, I removed the battery! after a while I replace the battery and plug it back to the computer, the same thing happend! actually it is pluged to a wall outlet for about half an hour, it's not hot, just a little bit but, stil there,s no sign of life!
BRO!!! SAME AS MEEEEE!! (similar i guess)
In the night after i flash miui v4 and neak kernel v2.0.6 (its old..) i plugged in the power and went to sleep. Next morning when i took my phone for my morning news THE PHONE WAS HOTTTTTT (very!) Ok..... i did the usual and checked my cpuspy mostly was 500mhz and 200 mhz NO DEEPSLEEP! dafuq? Ok reason found... So i guessed it was the kernel issue and so i flash a newer neak kernel. From there i went to school. Once there i checked my phone and it was warm.... cpuspy states decent deepsleep so i guess its just me but after awhile it got hot again! so i gave in and flash siyah 3.3.2 (used neak in the first place as some games wont work on siyah)(after initial boot from the new kernel there was major batt drain!!! From unplug to me flashing the newer neak kernel i already lost 60% batt wts??!? But after flashing siyah kernel i was left with 14% batt from 40%.... ok never mind i will just UV UC and other power saving stuff which helped a lot on previous days. Those "did" help and yeah all was cool till about 6% when the phone (you can guess right?) got hot.... HOT! So i gave in and powered down the phone..... i pulled the batt and separated the two for awhile. After the main body cooled i replaced the batt and rebooted the phone. After booting the batt was at 4% after seeing the batt level i powered the phone down and left it that way. Not even 1hr later the phone refused to boot.... no buzz no light no screens no nothing! I had to wait a few hours before getting home from school (omg yes it all happened in school zzomg ) now im at home with my charger and all (a different charger this time made sure it worked first) and no matter how i try to boot the phone plugged in with and with out the batt it refused!?!!?! WTS IS THIS BS?!?!
Sorry for the vulgarities and caps peeps...

I know nothing about Android, I'm new to this platform, my first smartphone was the N8, it has been stole, after I had an iPhone 3g I change for galaxy cause it was cheaper than iPhone 4 or 4s, andt it's a beautifull piece of hardware but, for all the rest I was disapointed and I've never liked it so much! I think I'm going to return to samsung to have an other one and when his back, I'm gonna sell it!
I think your usb/charger port is broken.. that is what happend to me. Try to charge the battery with an external charger to see if it turns on. Then get your phone to default (unroot/stock fw) if its working and let it repair. For me it just took 2 hours an i had my phone back for free.

Bricked?

hey guys need some advice
i got my n4 yesterday, had an gnex before.
so i unlocked my phone, rooted and installed cwm..
i flashed xylon rom, trinity kernel any 10, and everything was fine, like it was usual on my gnexus
after a couple of hours i pressed the power button to unlock the screen but nothing happend.
phone seems to be dead now, pressing power button for longer than10 seconds or 40 seconds does nothing anymore.no vibration or anything
when i plug it into charger, the led blinks 12 red, but phone wont turn on even after being plugged for a while.
do you think the device is bricked or something?
no fastboot modus is possible..
i am really ****ed up, now wtf is the quality of that?
used it for 3 hours and its broken?
any idea is welcome..(
Reminds me of the charging issue with CWM a few months back. The fix was to try to get the phone up again using a wall charger and letting it charge for a few hours and dont touch it for like 2 hours. Because we can't take out the battery, we are pretty stuck with what we have. Try to get to recovery and restore your backup if you can ever boot up. GL and let us know if anything changes and if you have fixed it or not.

Same issue with CWM few months ago. A lot of us were running a version of CWM and the batt would not keep a charge and the phone was depleting 1% every 5 mins and it was FAST. So it could be similar to that. Hopefully a dev here can chime in to see if anyone else had an issue. Have you asked the dev for the rom you are using?

Try different cables, chargers, outlets and also try plugging it into a computer to see if anything starts charging.

So it seems to be dead
Let it charge for a few hours. I had the same issue (blinking red led) and it turned out the battery was just completely depleted, even though I was sure the battery was at ~50% when I last turned it off. The blinking red led by itself does not mean the phone is dead in any case.

how many hours should i charge then?
Without the phone being plugged into a power supply, try holding the power button down for 30 seconds, release and then a second or two later try turning it on.
I really hope this works for you.
P.s. if that doesn't seem to work, try holding doing the same procedure but then try to enter recovery mode after the 30 seconds (holding power button + volume up and down all together)

[Q] Battery problems (phone won't turn on or charge)

So about a week or two ago my phone randomly shut itself off. I'm not sure exactly what happened but I just locked it and slid it in my pocket and an hour or so later I checked it and it wouldn't turn on, yet I could feel the gpu/processor getting extremely hot after a minute or so of failed attempts. Also the trackpad would flash red, which I had never noticed before. Prior to this I had been noticing my battery was draining quicker.
So when I try to charge it will charge itself for approximately a minute or so and then the orange LED will go out, again the processor/gpu gets very hot. After about an hour if I come back the phone will feel cold again as if It had been off and the phone won't turn on. I was able to buy a new battery today, because I read it could be related to a dead battery. This new battery boots to the familiar HTC mytouch4g intro (which is good, considering the old battery doesn't even power on), but then will shut off immediately after that or occasionally just get stuck at that screen. I can boot into recovery but then it says low battery voltage. I tried to do a factory reset but it just takes me back to the bootscreen again and shuts off.
I'm not sure what to do, as I've bricked a previous phone before and this doesn't really seem similar. I'm thinking about leaving the phone on charge, even though the orange LED is off with the hopes that it will charge. Anyone else have similar experience to this?

Sorry about the long response time. Unfortunately now my phone will not turn on with either battery, so I couldn't flash the img. I think it could be possible that my phone is not actually charging the battery and both of them have died. I'm not entirely sure, I'm going to charge it overnight and hope for the best.

My Nexus 7 is doomed...

A few weeks ago, i flashed a stock rom on my wifi nexus. I was happy with it until last week. Charging became incredibly slow - 30% over 8 hours. I threw it in my bag and wheb i got home 8 hours later, the battery was depleted completely. I couldn't turn it on. I plugged it in over night and it stayed at zero percent. I booted into recovery and reflashed my stock rom abd wiped my data. Still didn't charge. I tried going into my bootloader and hitting power off and then plugging in, but it still wouldn't charge. I can't flash my backup because it's on my card that i lost, and even if i had it, i wouldn't be able to keep it on long enough to flash it. ADB won't run on my pc and i don't know how to use the program anyway. What can i do to save my device? Please help.....

Not the average flasher knows how to tear apart a device - including myself. Anyways, this thing won't power up at all? You tried leaving it plugged in and booted into bootloader? If so, sounds like a hardware issue or the battery is defective.
I would be willing to bet that your battery connection came loose. Start at your USB port with a thin piece of plastic, such as a guitar pic. Work your way around the device and remove the back.

It's not too difficult. iFixit has a good tutorial on it. http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+Nexus+7+Battery/9895/1

Sounds like my device... only I even can't get into the bootloader nothing... Someone suggested that the battery got so far depleted that it will nor recharge.
However seems you at least can run the bootloader... for me it just stays black ..... nothing nopes nadda

I heard that was a good site. I'm more scared of screwing up any hardware than doing the actually tearing apart.
I can boot for like 30 seconds and then it shuts off. I've tried the solutions in the thread link above; however, i still think it is a software issue. I've used other roms that had really slow charging, but i was able to switch to another one before the battery got depleted. So i think my best bet is to somehow get a new rom on my device somehow. ADB won't run on my computer. It just flashes a command prompt on the screen for like half a second and closes.

What kernel are you on? The kernel is what does the charging operations.

I had a similar situation in that after the battery died, I got it to the point where I could boot up, but after a screen timeout, it would be dead again. Finally, I got it booted again (while plugged into power) and immediately went to developer options and checked the Stay Awake, never sleep while charging. Keeping the screen awake kept the N7 on and it charged up.
Funny my Galaxy Nexus started doing this crap on me too after I updated the rom and kernel. The phone and battery are only 2 months old replaced in April.
Occasionally it won't take a charge. I have to **** with the battery, removing it several times. Then all of a sudden it starts charging again after 10-15 resets.
Haven't had a problem in a while. Typically hits me like every 2 weeks.
No problem on N7 though but it happens. First thing is to change your kernel and rom to something else. If still draining, flash stock and relock, unlock, relock, wipe. Boot, upgrade to 4.2.2 and test.
