yep, thats right unlimited data off their premier website, activated today for $35. with my 25% discount it comes to $26.25 per month, two year contract. I was on the phone with them for 4 hours last thursday beccause I only wanted the plan because I have a Nexus, but it wouldn't check out without buying a phone, then the phone was supposed to have a $100 discount and I couldn't get the discount to show in the cart. Never did, but when i got pissed and told them to send me to cancellation, the clerk gave me a $20 dollar discount for the next three months. Good enough, so i now also own a samsung rugby smart. I talked to about half a dozen ppl there, and they all said there was no unlimited data plan. I had to give them permission to signin to my account and walk them through the process. ---->
They sent an email saying i needed to renew my plan to continue to receive the 25% discount. I followed the link to the upgrade site which started with choosing a phone. I selected smartphone link. off to the right on the next page is the cart where they have phone, accessories and data plans and something else i can't remember. Instead of selecting a phone I selected the data plans first. next page had 4 tabs, one being individual plans. all the way on the bottom is a plan "smartphone personal plan for 4g devices". This is listed as unlimited data. I put it in the cart. I couldn't check out, there was an asterisk next to the phone selection. So i had to select that, and it showed three phones, the rugby, a captivate, and some pantech phone. The rugby had the $100 discount that wouldn't show in the cart, that is when i said send me to cancellations, where I got the monthly relief. Not a hundred bucks, but close enough. i completed the checkout. Phone arrived yesterday, I activated it, and today it shows the plan on my account.
Crazy that nobody at att knew anything about the plan, and were amazed when they saw it. I was even told at one point that it would not be honored. Woo hoo..........
I find the unlimited part hard to bealive the only people that can offer that is Higher up people or if your on Media net otherwise not possible. Also I have heard Reps and people at the store call the 10GB plan Unlimated as most people 99% of the time wont know or use that much anyway
I know its hard to believe. As you can see in the OP all the folks at ATT that signed in to my account and I walked them through the steps couldn't believe it either. I just looked at the site again before reposting, and sure enough it is still showing the SMT personal plan with unlimited data. I haven't used more than 2 gb since I lowered from 4gb almost a year ago, cause i wait till i get to wifi to do large downloads and didn't like paying the outrageous costs for their darn data plans. Its a wait and see if and how it goes in the future. This is not medianet by the way.
Did you have a smart phone with AT&T before? Did you even have AT&T before and what link do I need to go to try this?
Thanks
Dial *DATA#
I have been with att forever, back b4 they became cingular, probably about 30 years. yes, i can remember the "cell" phones that had the giant battery pack attached. I currently have a Nexus b4 this phone. I only bought this phone cause it was the only way to get the plan. Pain in the ass trying to get cwm on it too.
As stated in the op, when I went to upgrade i really only wanted to update the plan because I didn't want to pay for another phone. when i went to the upgrade, it directed me to the phones first, but i skipped and went to data plans first, then when it forced me to buy a phone, it only showed 3 phones. After looking closer at the specs today, the reason it went that way is because the modem in this phone will not handle 4g. UMTS tops. They don't see it being to good for data! The signal indicator in the status bar is kinda neat because it is "4g" moniker but it is only capable of 3g. WTF ATT. Keep in mind the name of the plan is Smart phone plan for 4g devices. Kinda misleading, eh?
So, I haven't put the sim card in my Nexus yet, but hopefully I ain't hosed there. If it doesn't work I'll go to the b&m store and get a new sim. Going to wait till the first billing cycle (14th of the month) before i switch back to the Nexus. Love the fact that it is a rugged water resistant phone, but can't be my daily driver for too long. I'll update after i switch back to my nexus.
couldn't stand the wait. put the sim in my Nexus and it shows hsdpa:8 - good to go there
Did you have to wait until your phone arrived and you activated for the new plan to show up on your account? Did the new unlimited plan automatically replace your old plan?

Our phone company partners with a couple cellular carriers and I find that in each carrier portal unlimited is not truly unlimited, it's just set to something like 999999 MB or it's capped at 2 or 10GB and refreshes when you hit that cap without charge because they will begin to throttle you after what they consider excessive use.
My company actually has some feature phones that they've provisioned with unlimited data due to technical issues. I hope no one discovers the USB modem capability
I have a s4 on unlimited data and want to give the s4 to my wife and get the note 3. I qualify to get the note 3 on Verizon edge. Question is can I swap the phones over similar to what most people do when opening just a normal 2nd line or its not possible because the 25$ for edge is linked to the note 3?
Yes it is possible. All you have to do is swap SIM.

If my wife wanted to upgrade the note 3 would have to be turned back in correct?
I've never turned in a phone at upgrade...

I thought I read somewhere for Verizon edge you have to turn the phone back in.

Only if the phone isn't paid off. You can upgrade your phone after 6 months and you would have to turn the other phone back in.
Why would you want to go with the EDGE program?
I'm not going with it I'm keeping my unlimited plan. I was starting Verizon edge for my wife because it seems like it's a better deal than going with a traditional contract.
Why do you need to keep a phone that's out of date? These devices are getting replaced by faster counterparts every 3-5 months as it is, granted nothing like the note 3 w/ s-pen, but still internal guts wise.
Its only $45-60(depending on conditions,etc) more at the end of 6 months then buying it on a subsidized rate, and I get the latest piece of tech for only tax again....and i'm not in contract anymore, month per month.
So I decided to give a shot,
I lost my unlimited, oh well. My data-whore days are over. I did however 'sweet-talk/complain' my way into a 8gb for the price of 2gb, instead of the 6gb they were going to offer me.
So my bill going from my old unlimited plan , to this new w/ 8gb, only went up $30( ($125.53 p/m) after taxes, no-contract, great LTE coverage, and new toy ever 5-7 months... and only having to pay $40 at the Verizon store and walking out with a new Note 3.
I'm not sure what you're trying to explain. I'm adding Verizon edge as a second line and swapping sim cards with the note 3. They will have to trick me or just completely take away my unlimited before I just gave it up.

I was basically just explain the perks in me IMO.
In your case, you can swap the sims (should be able to), but the Note 3 will never be yours unless you pay outright for it all $700 of it. Even if you are putting your sim into the note 3 from the s4, the contract is written out for the device you get on the upgrade.
Edge is a 0% interest loan basically on the phone, and you can upgrade to a newer phone once you hit $350 paid or 6 months, which ever is first.

I see. So you're adding a second line? Or is the second line your wife's line and its available for the Edge upgrade?
Double post.
I was under the impression you pay the 25$ a month and once you pay the phone off its yours to upgrade or trade. I think you're saying that if I want to upgrade before I pay the phone off I would have the swap the Sims back around since the contract is for the note 3?
Yep I'm adding a second line for my wife. She likes my s4 and I want the note 3.

Just get the Note 3 for your wife and swap SIMs. Don't go with Edge. The Edge program is only available for lines that have upgrades available so you wouldn't be able to put it on your wife's line. If you do the Edge upgrade on your line, you will lose your unlimited data. So you might as well start a new contract with your wife's line and pay subsidized price of the Note 3. You're gonna be locked in for two years anyway for the new line.
I'm a available for a upgrade but I will never use it when I talked to the Verizon rep he said I could start a new line with edge and it will not affect my plan what so ever
I asked for a Verizon forum to be created to discuss issues like this, but while the admins are deciding on that I thought I would post this here for other Verizon Moto X unlimited data plan users to see in the mean time.
The easiest way that has been working to get a subsidized phone using your unlimited data plan's upgrade without losing your UDP is to buy from Best Buy online. Now since Moto Maker uses the Best Buy system, at least one poster on another forum reported it worked using his upgrade on Moto Maker, too. I have not personally used this method but others on another forum have and have posted screen shots showing it worked for them to keep their UDP.
There is a glitch in the Best Buy system (and in Moto Maker since it is the same system) whereby if you use your UDP line's upgrade, it tells you that you are going to lose your UDP but it does not make you select a new plan before checking out. And when you complete the check out it says Keep Current Plan. This appears to be true for all phones except the Droid Maxx. To progress through check out with the Droid Maxx you have to select a new Share/More Everything plan. Why that is no one knows and I suspect this glitch will be fixed eventually for all phones as it has been fixed for the Droid Maxx.
You also need to ship the new subsidized phone to your home to do the activation yourself. Do not ship to the store because many stores will not give you the phone without activating it with the SIM card it shipped with in it. That is the step you want to avoid - you do NOT want to activate the new subsidized phone with the SIM card it shipped with in it. If you do, you will be switched off of your UDP and onto the 2GB data plan. Instead, you want to swap out the SIM card the new phone shipped with and replace it with your current SIM card. If they are different sizes get a SIM card cutter/adapter as needed.
All Verizon 4G LTE phones are shipping with the SIM cards already installed in them. All you have to do is turn them on and they connect to the network and this is all it may take to lose your UDP. So the first thing you should do when you get your new subsidized phone is remove the SIM card it shipped with and throw it out. Do NOT turn on your new subsidized phone before removing the SIM card it shipped with.
So here are the steps:
1) Order a subsidized phone other than the Droid Maxx from Best Buy online using the upgrade on your UDP line, choosing Keep Current Plan and selecting No Change each step of the way, and taking screen shots of the ordering process at each step to document;
2) Ignore the warning that you will lose your UDP;
3) Do NOT select a new plan; choose Keep Current Plan and select No Change at each opportunity throughout the ordering process;
4) Select ship to your home address and do NOT ship to store;
5) Before you check out confirm that it says Keep Current Plan;
6) When your new subsidized phone arrives to your home, do not turn your new subsidized phone on, remove the SIM card that shipped with the phone and throw it out, shut off your current phone and remove the SIM card from your current phone. Then put your current SIM card in your new subsidized phone - get a SIM cutter/adapter as needed if the SIM cards are different sizes;
7) Turn on your new subsidized phone - this should activate the new subsidized phone;
8) Log onto Verizon online and confirm that you still have your UDP on your line; and
9) Keep checking for the next 14 days to make sure you keep your UDP.
Again, I haven't done this myself, but I have read about others doing it on another forum and they posted screen shots. Kicking you off of your UDP appears tied to activating the new subsidized phone using the SIM card that shipped with the phone. My understanding is that this works because you aren't doing that and because the Best Buy system warns you that you will lose your UDP but does not make you select a new plan. The only exception so far is the Droid Maxx, but I am sure in time this glitch will be fixed for all the phones. But for now, from all I have read it is still working.
There has been 1 poster on another forum who claimed the Best Buy Method outlined above did not work for him and he was switched off of his UDP to the 2GB plan. However, he did not do the SIM card switch himself without involving Verizon. He said it didn't work and so he called Verizon and the phone rep did something to make it work and that is when he lost his UDP. Moral of this story - if you are going to do this do NOT involve a Verizon rep or a Best Buy rep for that matter. If it doesn't work for you for some reason, my advice is to return the phone to Best Buy and have your upgrade restored. You may or may not be able to get out of the restocking fee if the phone has never been activated. Whatever you do, do not involve a Verizon or Best Buy CSR in the activation process. Other posters have posted screen shots showing they kept their UDP when they didn't involve a Verizon rep. YMMV.
Also, other posters on the other forum that have made mistakes and not followed the protocol precisely have been able to return their phones to Best Buy, get their upgrade restored and get their UDP back as long as they did it within 14 days.
If you want a Moto X Dev Ed, which you can't get using an upgrade, I suggest you use your upgrade to buy an iPhone 5s and sell it and use the cash from the sale towards purchasing a Moto X Dev Ed. I worked out the math on that in this thread:
Using Your Upgrade to Buy an iPhone 5s to Sell So You Can Buy a Moto X Dev Ed
Transfer UDP Upgrade Method
There is another method that works if you have a family plan and at least one line has a basic phone or a capped data plan on it. This works because you can transfer your upgrade from your UDP line to the basic or capped data plan line and then upgrade and activate the new subsidized phone on that line. Then you switch the new subsidized phone to your UDP line and you will not lose your UDP. I have done this personally so I know it works. If you want a Moto X Dev Ed, since you can't get one using an upgrade, I suggest you get a subsidized iPhone 5s with your upgrade and sell it and use the cash from the sale proceeds to put toward purchasing a Moto X Dev Ed.
If you are transferring your UDP line's upgrade to a basic phone line, you will have to pick a data plan when you purchase a new subsidized smartphone on the basic phone line. You can later drop that data plan but the only three retailers that will let you do this without charging you a secondary ETF of $400 are Verizon, Best Buy and Costco. So don't buy from any other retailers if you are using a basic phone line to transfer your UDP line's upgrade to. And when you do buy from those three I mentioned, double check that they are still not charging a secondary ETF for downgrading a data plan before 181 days are up. It is hit or miss whether a Best Buy or Costco rep will know how to do the upgrade transfer properly. I have done this once at Best Buy and the rep was very knowledgeable so it worked without a hitch but I have read others have not been so lucky. The safest way is to do it yourself through Verizon online. I avoid the Verizon stores because some of the reps get ticked off that this works and refuse to do it for you. YMMV.
Also, you cannot transfer an upgrade from an UDP line to a line that currently is eligible for its own upgrade. You have to use that line's upgrade first. That is no problem though because you can just then transfer your UDP line's upgrade to that line when you are ready to get a new phone for that line.
Here are the steps if you have a capped data plan line on your family plan and are doing this through Verizon online:
1) Log onto Verizon online and click Shop;
2) You will now see which lines in your family plan are eligible for an upgrade - the CDP line you are going to use to transfer your UDP line's upgrade to cannot be eligible for an upgrade;
3) Select your UDP line and click Transfer on your UDP line and select the CDP line to transfer the UDP line's upgrade to;
4) Purchase a subsidized phone of your choice on the CDP line and have it shipped to your home;
5) When you get the new subsidized phone at your home, turn off the CDP line's current phone and follow the instructions to activate the new subsidized phone on the CDP line - THIS IS A CRITICAL STEP THAT MUST BE DONE;
6) Turn off the new subsidized phone and click My Verizon Activate or Switch a Device to put the CDP line's original phone back on the CDP line by following the directions; and
7) Turn off the phone currently on your UDP line and click My Verizon Activate or Switch a Device to put the new subsidized phone on your UDP line by following the directions.
Steps 6 and 7 also can be done by putting the new subsidized phone's SIM card into the CDP line's original phone after activation and then putting the SIM card from the UDP line's original phone into the new subsidized device if all of the SIM cards are the same size.
If you are using your UDP line's upgrade to get a subsidized iPhone 5s to sell, you stop after Step 6 and then the iPhone 5s is off of your account and available to sell. Remember to take the SIM card out of the iPhone 5s and discard it before you ship your iPhone 5s to its new owner.
Here are the steps if you have a basic phone line on your family plan and are doing this through Verizon online:
1) Log onto Verizon online and click Shop;
2) You will now see which lines in your family plan are eligible for an upgrade - the basic phone line you are going to use to transfer your UDP line's upgrade to cannot be eligible for an upgrade;
3) Select your UDP line and click Transfer on your UDP line and select the basic phone line to transfer the UDP line's upgrade to;
4) Purchase a subsidized phone of your choice on the basic phone line, pick the 2GB data plan and have the new subsidized phone shipped to your home;
5) When you get the new subsidized phone at your home, turn off the basic phone and follow the instructions to activate the new subsidized phone on the now 2GB data plan line - THIS IS A CRITICAL STEP THAT MUST BE DONE;
6) Turn off the new subsidized phone and click My Verizon Activate or Switch a Device to put the basic phone back on the line by following the directions;
7) The 2GB data plan may or may not drop off when you complete Step 6 - if it doesn't, you can block data on the basic phone line and the data plan will drop off or you can call Verizon and tell them to take the data plan off of the basic phone line and they will do it; and
8) Turn off the phone currently on your UDP line and click My Verizon Activate or Switch a Device to put the new subsidized phone on your UDP line by following the directions.
Step 8 also can be done by placing the UDP line's original phone's SIM card into the new subsidized phone if the SIM cards are the same size.
If you are using your UDP line's upgrade to get a subsidized iPhone 5s to sell, you stop after Step 7 and then the iPhone 5s is off of your account and available to sell. Remember to take the SIM card out of the iPhone 5s and discard it before you ship your iPhone 5s to its new owner.
Add A Line Method
If you have a family plan and do not have at least one line that has a basic phone or a capped data plan on it to transfer your upgrade to, you can add a basic phone line and get a subsidized iPhone for that line to sell to recoup the cost of the added line. You can do it if you have an individual plan, too, but it is not cost effective to convert an individual plan to a family plan as selling a subsidized iPhone will not recoup the added cost of a family plan.
You need to have a Verizon basic phone to add to the basic phone line or you can put the ghost ESN on the line. Keep in mind that Verizon prepaid phones can't be used for this unless they have met the requirements to be put on a postpaid account. Also keep in mind that some people claim that putting the ghost ESN on your line yourself is a violation of Verizon's TOS. Other people say Verizon reps will do this for you and it is not a problem. Idk what the correct answer is. The Ghost ESN = 13800000400. NEVER PUT THE GHOST ESN ON AN UDP LINE AS YOU WILL LOSE YOUR UDP IF YOU DO!
Since you will be dropping the data plan on the new line before 181 days to make this cost effective, you can only do this at three retailers - Verizon, Best Buy and Costco - since all other retailers will charge you a secondary ETF of $400 if you downgrade a data plan prior to 181 days. And of course, double check before you add a line that the three retailers still have this policy in place when you are ready to do it.
If you have a special plan, like the any mobile to any mobile for $5 promotion that ran a couple of years ago, you can't add a line online and keep that plan. You will have to call Verizon to add a line or do it in a store. Supposedly Best Buy reps and Costco reps know how to do this, too, but YMMV.
Here are the steps to add a line to your family plan through Verizon online:
1) Buy a used Verizon basic phone off of ebay/craig's list that is eligible for use on a postpaid account (skip this step if you are using the ghost ESN);
2) Log onto Verizon online and click Add a Line;
3) Select the subsidized phone of your choice and pick the 2GB data plan for the new line;
4) When you get the new subsidized phone at your home, follow the instructions to activate the new subsidized phone on the 2GB line - THIS IS A CRITICAL STEP THAT MUST BE DONE;
5) Turn off the new subsidized phone and click My Verizon Activate or Switch a Device to put the used basic phone or ghost ESN on the new line by following the directions;
6) The 2GB data plan may or may not drop off when you complete Step 5 - if it doesn't, you can block data on the basic/ghost phone line and the data plan will drop off or you can call Verizon and tell them to take the data plan off of the basic/ghost phone line and they will do it - caveat emptor if you use the ghost ESN as some people claim that is a violation of your TOS and others say it is not and the reps will do it for you, idk what the correct answer is; and
7) Turn off the phone currently on your UDP line and click My Verizon Activate or Switch a Device to put the new subsidized phone on your UDP line by following the directions.
Now that you have a basic phone line, you can use it to transfer any of your other family plan UDP line upgrades to by following the instructions for doing that in my previous post.
After you have upgraded all of your UDP lines, you will have 1 extra upgrade available and you can use that to buy a subsidized iPhone 5s to sell to recoup the cost of the added line.

Yes. Once you have activated a phone on your line, the SIM card will be attached to your account for a period of time before it becomes inactivated, could be active for up to 90 days. Now the new owner could reprogram the SIM card for their account, but no way would I trust they could do it right. And if they don't do it right, it will only cause you problems.
If the new owner is on Verizon, all they have to do is go into a corporate store and they will give them a SIM card for free to use if they need one. Or if they call Verizon, they will mail one for free. They can even ask for one online and it will be mailed free. Non-corporate stores charge for SIM cards but corporate stores do not.
If the new owner wants to use the phone on a GSM network, the Verizon SIM card wouldn't work anyhow.
OK I get all of this one question my UDP plan has an eligible upgrade now. I can transfer that to another line and get a new phone and not lose UDP on this line. Also does the line I transfer to have to be eligible for an upgrade. All two of my lines upgraded in the last 8 months can they upgrade again.

I am not sure what you are saying here. If there is an upgrade available on a line, it will say so when you log on to your Verizon account.
Let me explain better what I mean is I have a phone my wife has a phone my daughter has a phone they're all under my name I use my wifes upgrade to get my max i used my daughters upgrade to get my wifes RAZR M. I I use my wifes upgrade in August and signed a two-year contract I use my daughters upgrade in June and signed a two-year contract. My question is if I give one of those lines my upgrade would I be able to get subsidized phone. Since they're both only about six to eight months into a2 year contract. Can I still use my upgrade on one of their lines.

Yes of course. That is the whole point of this process - you transfer your UDP line's upgrade to a capped data plan line or a basic phone line and the capped data/basic phone line cannot be eligible for its own upgrade when you do the transfer. You must first activate the new phone on the capped data or basic phone line, then switch the new phone to your UDP line.
After you do this, your UDP line's contract will be extended 2 years.
Got it so after activation on the capped line my UDP line keeps unlimited but I get stuck in a 2 year contract again. Sounds good I didn't think I would be able to ever use this upgrade again I have been sitting on it over 6 months. I may just wait and see what is up all the manufacturers sleeves and just get a new phone. I love my maxx but this locked boot loader is a pita. Or I may get a new phone sell it and my maxx and buy a Dev maxx. Thanks for the info when I checked with Verizon they told me if I switched my upgrade to another line this line would lose unlimited. I guess they are trying to keep these work around to a minimum and lie to the customers. That is great customer support. If they don't want us to do this then close the loop holes. Don't lie about it that is just shameful.

And getting "stuck" in a Verizon truly, unthrottled, unlimited data plan is bad? You can sell your line for about $300 on ebay if you want out of your contract. And probably more as fewer and fewer of these contracts remain.

Some of them actually believe that. I did 2 upgrade transfers during the holidays to a basic phone line that I added to my account just for transfers. Still have UDP on both of my smartphone lines.

The problem with not activating it is that your account will show pending activation on it until you activate the device. That blocks you from doing some things on your account until that gets lifted. Some on other forums have claimed that the pending activation eventually goes away on its own without having to actually activate the device on your account. I am guessing you could probably call up Verizon, tell them you gave the phone as a gift to another person before you activated it (which you are allowed to do) and have the pending activation removed. But I would remove the SIM card that shipped with the device because that is still linked to your account even if you don't activate the SIM card.
If you want to sell a device without activating it, I would call Verizon and ask what will happen. Don't mention UDP. Just ask them if you use an upgrade and give the phone away as a gift to a person for use on another account, what would happen to the pending activation on your line?
All Verizon cares about after they ship you a subsidized phone is that you don't break your contract with them because they recoup the subsidy in the monthly wireless charges. It is your right to gift or sell your subsidized phone as you see fit. I would just tell them it is a gift simply because I would not want them to ask me any more questions.
ETA - I called and the CSR I spoke with said you have to activate the phone on the line you used the upgrade on to remove the pending activation hold from your line. I call bs on that because what would they do if the phone got lost by FedEx - they have to have a way to do it.
Just don't sell the phone with the SIM card it came with in it. Take the SIM card it came with out and throw it away.

There has been 1 poster on another forum who claimed the Best Buy Method outlined above did not work for him and he was switched off of his UDP to the 2GB plan. He did not post any screen shots of the ordering process showing he did not select a new plan and that it said Keep Existing Plan nor did he post any screenshots of his account, so there is no way to know if he followed the directions properly. Other posters posted screen shots showing they kept their UDP. YMMV.

This poster has now revealed that he experienced a glitch when he transferred his SIM card to the new phone, called VZW and they "fixed" it.
I'm gonna give it a shot. About time I put my Thunderbolt to rest.
So my girlfriend has an iphone 4 and is eligible for an upgrade. She wants an iphone 5s, despite my prodding for her to move to android.
Is there any way to use the best buy glitch to get her a new iPhone without losing unlimited? I know they use different sims..
Edit: I should probably mention that we are on separate family plans and we (as well as everyone else on my account) has unlimited data and are eligible for upgrade).

Verizon iPhone 4/4S is 3G/EVDO only. The SIM in it was only for GSM "global roaming", and you could operate without it. The iPhone 5S is 4G/LTE and and sim is required for operation and used for LTE connections as wel as roaming.
If I recall correctly, the 3G unlimited data plan was a different feature code, and upgrading a 3G phone to a 4G/LTE phone meant picking a 4G/LTE data plan feature code. Since 4G UDP's are not available you'd need to pick from their currently available 4G/LTE data plans

In the past, when you activated a SIM on your account it was a "once and done" thing. If you switched away to a different SIM on your account, you couldn't re-use it, even for the same line. (i.e. had MicroSIM and Galaxy S4 on account, switched to Nano SIM and iPhone 5. Want to switch back to the GS4, and you can't reuse the MicroSIM from before, you have to get a new one). Has that changed?

Youre correct about the SIMs.
I have 4 lines on my family plan, as of a month ago 3 of them were on 4G and the 4th was still an old Droid 2 Global (3G), ALL WITH UNLIMITED DATA. When I bought my DevEd Moto X, I suddenly had an extra 4G phone laying around, so I decided to try to move that phone to the line with the D2G. I called Verizon and told them that the D2G was acting funny and would like to activate my old Razr Maxx HD on that line until she could figure out what she wanted to use her upgrade on (LOL). It took a little while, but eventually it worked. The Rep found my Razr Maxx HD in the system and replaced the 3G phone with my old 4G phone, I didnt have to switch out the SIM card or anything, she is now using my old phone AND LTE SIM card on a line that previously had a 3G phone / SIM card.
Knowing all that, it seems like it should be possible to use one of our family lines' upgrades to buy an iPhone 5, send it to my girlfriend, have her somehow get a new SIM for it, and activate it on her line without losing unlimited. Crazy, or crazy enough it just might work??

Just checked over there, it appears that he did not just transfer his SIM. He transferred his SIM and then it didn't work and so he called Verizon to get them to activate it and that is when he lost his UDP.
So moral of this story - if it doesn't work with your old SIM, DO NOT CALL VERIZON! Return the phone and your upgrade will be restored. Or you can request a SIM card by phone and see if a completely fresh SIM card will work. To request a SIM card by phone, you call in and say you are having a lot of dropped calls and pulled your SIM card to see if that would help and you damaged it when you did. They will mail you a new one and you can try activating the new SIM card in your old phone and then in your new phone.
I would avoid the stores at all costs unless you know you have customer friendly CSRs.

Like the other poster said, those old SIMs in the iPhone 4/4s series aren't 4G LTE. Do you have any old 4G LTE phones you can put on her line? You can't use any that are currently active on one of your lines because you can't let a UDP line be without a 4G LTE phone on it - it will drop the data plan if you do.
If you can find a spare 4G LTE phone to put on her line, you can reprogram the SIM card in it for her line. If you have a spare 4G LTE phone, let me know and I will type out the steps to reprogram the SIM card.
Went inside best buy mobile today to pick up my pre ordered note 4, and they told me that i had to switch my plan in order to walk out with the phone! The new plan they were trying to get me on would make me pay 800$ for my note and be "off contract". In order to switch to that plan id have to cancel all 5 of my lines, with the ETF fees up in the thousands of dollars. I told him no way and that id call sprint, and ge told me that even if I call i'd still have no choice. Anyone else encounter something similar?

I had something similar happen to me today at the Sprint Store. The clerk insisted that I couldn't keep my plan. I told him to get bent. After a heated exchange, I turned on the phone, had the phone go through the automated activation process and viola, I was activated on my existing plan. He sheepishly mumbled something under his breath and I walked out with my phone.
I'm guessing they only make the sweet commission when they sign you up for a new plan.
I had trouble with keeping my plan at Best Buy as well but the Best Buy Mobile guy called Sprint. I didn't even have to push. He did that on his own. The woman at Sprint wanted to speak to me to get permission to speak with the clerk about my account. They were able to fix it so that I was able to keep my plan. It took a few minutes but didn't seem to be a problem. I have the old Everything Data 450 plan which I've had for a couple of years now. Got it with my Galaxy S3.
When I looked it up on Sprint's website a few days ago, it just said that you had to have an Everything Data plan (or some other type of plan but I can't remember the name) and it didn't specify that you had to have a higher plan. I'm glad I got to keep my plan. It's already more than I need. The plan he was looking to switch me to would've been $90 before taxes. Right now I pay $80.

Been There Done That
I bought the Note 4 for my fiance` yesterday. We had been shopping around for phones for a while. Many of the sales rep's said the same thing, in that we had to switch plans and we could not buy the phone out right but instead had to make a $30/month payment for 24 months. This was not going to happen. I mean, what about my rebates and the 2 year contract discounts. Finally I called up the HQ corporate store in Reston VA to get the skinny on the situation. They instructed me to go to any corporate store and that they could get me the phone with my discounts and continue to use the plan I have on my phone, the S4. Long story short YES you can keep your old plan, YES you can buy the phone outright and not pay nearly $800 for the device! Now you know and anyone who says otherwise should win the employee of the month award.
PS The employees at sprint whom I have worked with at both HQ and other corporate locations are extremely knowledgeable and go out of there way to make sure you are happy with their service. One employee sat and entertained my son while the other explained how to best utilize the phones features while yet another went of to find an assortment of accessories. I felt like I was a celebrity. And they did this for every customer. It doesn't get much better than that.
Pre-order thru BB picked up yesterday no issues upgraded my line. Traded a old evo 4g got 200$ paid 123$ total for note 4. Can't beat that deal never tried or force me to change plan family 1500 here unlimited data

When I went to pre-order at BB, that's what I was told as well.. They are saying that Sprint is forcing this issue.. I pre-ordered anyway, only because I want the 200 rebate on the old phone. I figured I'd argue the point when I pick it up.
Otherwise, I would have had my phone in hand already from Sprint instead of waiting on BB.
I picked up the note4 from the sprint store yesterday and ended up going with the new plan. They spelled out the two programs and said either are available with pros and cons of both and I ended up going with the "new" plan. Did I make a mistake ? Its still unlimited data and seemed to be mostly the same ?
So now you are paying 720 for the phone... Good deal?

Monthly Charges, See below
Sprint Keep Existing Plan
With 2-year contract extension
Maybe you have 1 line and thats how? In mine case I got 4 lines and they cannot do anything to my plan because 3 lines have no change
I had the same issue in a sprint retail store. Im going to call tomarrow to try and get the plan back because i did not take that 720 dollar plan.

the two new plans we offered now says in small writing, your plan can be throttled while watching a movie to 1 megabyte per second and people with other plans have priority over data than you do.
I tried to add a second line to my account which I have the 450 data unlimited plan and they said that they had to go into a new plan you have two phones I stated about the new rules of being throttled me act like you didn't know anything about it and would not look it up.
I don't watch alot of video over cell. So I'm fine with switching over. I can see for people who are using 10+ gigs a month that being a problem.
It's not just video. You get on the web at peak times, guess who gets bumped first. The peeps with the new plans. It might not matter to some. I live out in the boonies and have only one tower to connect to and sucks during peak. But Sprints my only choice, unless back to satillite.........NOT
I ended up getting my way by calling sprint in the best buy store to keep my existing plan, but he told me sprint was going to make me switch one way or another sooner than later.
Again that's not a bad thing. I don't get kicked off data. I just don't get priority data service. That's no different then other unlimited plans.
My data usage is somewhere between 1-2 gigs a month. I don't see it being that big of a deal. If its not your only source of net.
Plan Change
I was told by Sprint rep that I would have to change plans if I upgraded through them. One Sprint rep told me other retailers such as BB could do the upgrade without changing plans. Both BB stores I talked to confirmed this. I had no problem when getting mine.
I pre-ordered two at BB and picked them up Friday. The guy during pre-order didn't have a problem with me keeping my plan and neither did the guy I picked them up from. Seems like it is hit or miss on knowledgeable versus not knowledgeable employees in both sprint and BB. It also sounds like someone us perpetuating something false to lots of people making it worse.

I had the same issue, but at a Sprint corporate store! They kept telling me that we would have to call Sprint customer care and get their permission for us to keep our current plan (the grandfathered in 1500 Everything data plan). We called customer care from home, and they said they will put something on our account that says we wouldn't have to change our plan. When I went back to pre-order it, they told us we would have to call customer care in store in order to get this change approved. After a bunch of arguing everything was handled and I pre-ordered the phone (about 2 weeks ago). Friday comes, and that store never got the phone in. I was going out of town so I was a bit upset that I wasn't going to have my new phone. Saturday I went to a Sprint store where I was at for the weekend and they had Note 4's in-stock. While purchasing we weren't told we had to change our plan at all, and it was a very smooth process. The $80 that Samsung would send me 1-2 months from now for pre-ordering the phone was irrelevant at this point.
TLDR- One store said we had to change our plan and would not budge, Other store didn't even bring up changing our plan.
Now that we are starting to see a bunch of folks get their phones, I'm creating a thread for those of us with unlimited data to discuss if we lost our plan or not and if the extra data plan on the dummy line was able to be removed.
my dumb line had an available upgrade that I used to get the note 4. I did get a notice saying I would have to keep the data plan for the duration of the contract.
However, I did the upgrade online with an online customer service rep who assured me multiple times that I could move the note 4 to my unlimited data line, put the dumb phone back on the dummy line, and drop the data. I was very specific with what I wanted to do, and she was sure I could do it. I kept the transcript of the chat and she also told me if I had any problem that I could reference the chat and she would also put notes in my account about it.
Of course she could be full of crap, but I'll find out on thursday.

Please hold for a Verizon Wireless sales representative, we appreciate your patience. Your current estimated wait time is 0 min 24 secs.
I can’t wait to tell you how you can get MORE! Ask me about our new MORE Everything Plans now!*
You are now chatting with 'Ashley H.'
Ashley H.:*Hi and welcome to Verizon Wireless Sales Chat, my name is Ashley. May I have your name, please?
michael:*Michael
Ashley H.:*Hey Michael how can I help you today?
michael:*I want to upgrade my line ending XXXX with a note 4. Can that be done now or do I have to wait until it comes out
Ashley H.:*Do you know if that line has an upgrade available now?
michael:*It does.
Ashley H.:*Wonderful! Then you would be able to pre order it as an upgrade. The current phone stays *active until you activate the new one.
Ashley H.:*And you are not charged anything until the phone ships
michael:*Great. This line is on a separate plan from my other 2 lines. Those lines are on unlimited data plans. Will upgrading this line cause me to lose unlimited data on the other 2
Ashley H.:*It shouldn't, but i can help you through the order to make sure it does not change.
michael:*Ok that would be great. Last question before we get started. I am going to use the new phone on my primary line by simply swapping the sim card. Then I want to put the current phone back on this line and remove the data plan. Will I run into any problems doing that?
Ashley H.:*Well you can swap phones with no problem, but are you trying to have a smartphone on the line without the data package?
michael:*No, I will be adding a non smartphone back to the line that I am using to do the upgrade
michael:*Basically , I want the note 4 on my main line but since this line has an upgrade, I am going this route
Ashley H.:*Ok I hear you, that phone line you are sticking it in, is it a smartphone line already?
michael:*No, it has an old "dumb" phone
Ashley H.:*Ok that is fine then you will not have a proble
Ashley H.:*problem*
michael:*Awesome. I'm ready when you are
Ashley H.:*Great! ok can you please click on the My verizon link in the upper left, and then log out in the upper right?
Ashley H.:*We just need to make sure everything is cleared
Ashley H.:*Then log back in, click on upgrade device, and select the line with the upgrade please. Let me know if that works
michael:*Ok
michael:*Ok I'm there
Ashley H.:*Awesome, ok once you select that line and click next, you can add the phone to cart, make sure you select the color and everything first.
michael:*Ah okay there we go, I'm at the confirm pricing page
Ashley H.:*Did it ask you if it was for an upgrade?
michael:*Yup. And I chose the "dumb" phone , line
Ashley H.:*Great! ok you can go through the plan, features and accessories and click on checkout.
michael:*It's saying that I have a unlimited data on one or more of my accounts and to continue I must select a new plan for all of the lines
Ashley H.:*Ok may I please have your full name and phone number to pull up your account to see if there is something we can do?
michael:*<info given>
Ashley H.:*Thank you and may i please have your billing password to verify?
michael:*XXXXXX
Ashley H.:*Thank you very much. One moment please.
Ashley H.:*Sorry for the delay I am just running a mock order
michael:*No problem
Ashley H.:*Ok on my end I am seeing the option to choose the 2GB for $30 plan is that what you are seeing?
michael:*2gb for 60
Ashley H.:*That makes no sense. Hmm ok one moment please
michael:*Ok
Ashley H.:*Ok i just checked you should see the note. Sorry for the run around! Please click on the Verizon page in the upper left, and then log out for me please
Ashley H.:*And then log back in, select the line again and then on the phone page, scroll down and you should see the Note
michael:*Now I see the 2gb for 30 plan , and others
Ashley H.:*Great! ok you can select the 2GB for $30 one and continue
michael:*There was a pop up that said that I will have to keep the data plan for the duration of the contract regardless the phone on the line. Does that mean if I move the note off the line and put the old dumb phone on i will still have to pay the 30 a month?
Ashley H.:*Not at all, if you are moving a basic phone on that line you are fine I assure you, you can get the data taken off
michael:*Ok
michael:*I'm going to call you if they give me crap about it Ashley!
michael:*Lol
Ashley H.:*Lol you can always keep a copy of this chat so they know what I did say!
Ashley H.:*That is totally ok
Ashley H.:*And I can even make a note on your account about it for them just in case
michael:*Okay I'm at the cart. It all looks good. So the 329 is billed to me when then phone ships?
Ashley H.:*But my sister recently did the same thing and had no issue
Ashley H.:*Correct
michael:*Sweet.
michael:*I appreciate you helping me .
Ashley H.:*Oh you are welcome
Ashley H.:*You can continue to billing and shipping and I will need the confirmation number to post in the note as well about it please
Ashley H.:*Ok it looks like you are all set with that!
Ashley H.:*Is there anything else I can help you with today?
michael:*Yay thank you. Now don't think so.
michael:*Thanks, have a good rest of your day
Ashley H.:*I am coming to the end of my shift, 8 AM here But have a great day as well!
Ashley H.:*Thank you for your business today; I'm glad I was able to help you! At the end of this chat there is an opportunity for you to provide your feedback based on your experience with me today. We would very much appreciate your thoughts. (Keep in mind this is representing the representative and not Verizon as a Whole.)

That loop hole got sealed off on Aug 24.

doesn't matter Verizon will say the rep wasn't familiar with that and they will screw you.
I'm familiar with the documentation stating the loophole was closed. And I still have 15 days to return the device should they not honor what the rep said. I have been a customer for 12 years, hopefully I have a little influence when making my argument

Don't bet on it. When it comes to VZW, they don't honor customer loyalty.
To the OP, this SAME exact thing happened to me. I was told by vzw chat I could remove the data plan and even upgraded at a local corporate store and the manager removed the data plan from the dumbphone line. Next month the data plan was back on the dumbphone line and the dispute started. It took over a month for them to finally agree to remove the data but as others have referenced it definitely was implemented on August 24th... Good luck but I would honestly just cancel the order now
I have been a customer for 12 years, hopefully I have a little influence when making my argument...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!
I RECORDED VZW reps blatantly lying and even posted clips.
Never ever believe anything a vzw rep tells you.
Verizon is the Honeybadger of Wireless carriers
ive generally had good experiences with customer service with reguard to getting things done outside the "normal" scope. I am certainly not claiming that becuase of this chat record im going to instantly get it removed. The point of this thread is to give people a place to discuss their situation, what worked or didnt work for them, and a general status on how keeping unimited data, and/or removing the data from a dummy line works out. I would like to get more reponses from people who are actually trying to keep their unlimited plan while using a subsidy upgrade. There are legitimate reasons a customer may choose to remove a smartphone from a line and replace it with a non-smartphone. In these cases I cannot see the carrier enforcing the customer to keep a data plan they cannot use. Im not saying they won't, but from a purley buisness standpoint, it wouldnt make much sense to do so.
in either case, over the next few days, I hope more people chime in once they get their phone on their success or failure of accomplishing this. If it comes down to it, I will just return/repurchase the phone at retail but hopefully it wont come to that. I plan on giving them a call later today just to discuss the matter and get a better idea on what to expect. If anything, it gives me more tools in my toolbox when it comes time to make my case.
wow thanks for the heads up about the situation. I can confirmed that is the case now if upgrading a basic "dumb" phone, you are forced to keep the 2GB data plan. FYI, I had to go through two reps till someone knew about it. Most of them don't know about forcing us to keep the 2GB data plan and I asked them to double check before I proceed upgrading my basic phone.
Thank you Verizon for screwing over your customers once again and I can finally leave. In my area Tmobile and Verizon coverage are almost the same but Verizon just has a slight edge in mountain areas. No way I'm gonna pay full price on a phone on a subsidized plan.
So I just called and asked some clarifying questions. I informed the rep what what my intention was, specifically. I said I want to put the Sim card I have now into the note 4, and then re-activate the older, dumbphone, on the line the note 4 was orderd on. I told her my concern was that I would either lose unlimited data, or, I would be stuck with a $30 a month data plan I wont be using.
I told her about the article stating that customers would be required to keep a data plan on a line that was used for a subsidy upgrade. She was not aware of this at all, and said "if thats true then Im gonna need retraining!" She put me on hold and consulted a supervisor.
She came back and informed me that the requirement is , if you are going to keep a smartphone on a line, it must have a data plan. If you do not have a smartphone, or, you add a non-smartphone to the line, then of course the plan can be changed. In fact, she said that a data plan CANNOT be attatched to a line that does not have a compatible phone (read: smartphone).
Just to make myself feel better, I asked to speak to the supervisor. he got on the line and confirmed what the rep had told me. I asked him "So I will be able to keep my unlimited data plan if I swap sims?" - yes , "and I will be able to remove the data from the dumy line?" - yes
Just to cover my bases, I called back and got another call center, I asked the same series of questions and presented the same data. The rep again said he had no heard of making customers keep data on lines that were used to upgrade to a smartphone, and then removed. Again he spoke to a supervisor, confirmed that I would be able to do what I am looking to do without a problem. I again asked to speak to said supervisor, who again confirmed what the rep had told me.
Though this may not work out in the end, at this point, Im not seeing how placing the note 4 on my main unlimited line, and returning the dumb phone to the dummy line, and remvoving data is not going to pan out as expected. Unless when they go to actually make the changes, their system prevents it, leaving me to make a case with the supervisor if needed.
Has anyone else lost their unlimited data, or been forced to keep the data plan AFTER moving a dumb phone back to dummy line?
That's the thing, either there is some inadequate training or it's possible to remove the $30 data plan. You can check this article and see a screenshot about Mandatory Disclosure.

At this point I'm fed up with Verizon with loop holes trying to keep unlimited data, late firmware updates, and locking/crippling the phones.
I don't know about the whole dumb phone loop hole, but I am going to try a similar tactic to keep my unlimited. I have two smartphones on my plan. Mine has unlimited data and my wife's has the 2gb plan. My phone is eligible for an upgrade, but her's isn't until Jan. '15. I transferred my upgrade to her line and pre-ordered the Note 4. My plan is to activate it on her line and then switch it over to my line (putting her phone back on her line afterward). Then in Jan she can upgrade normally. I'm hoping this will work and I keep my Unlimited.
So now I have a question because I have never switched smartphones on my account. When I activate the new Note 4 which SIM card should be in the phone when I do it? Should the new card that comes with the phone be in it? Or should I put her's or mine in it? Then when I switch the Note to my line, do I put my SIM card from my current phone in it?
My thought is that I activate with the new SIM in the Note 4 leaving her SIM in her current phone. When I switch the Note to my line I put my SIM in it. Then re-activate her phone with her original SIM back on her line. Does this sound right?
Any help would be appreciated.

I plan on doing the EXACT same thing. I'm going to go ahead and activate the note 4 with the new sim on the 2gb line. Then after its activated I'll swap my sim from the unlimited line into the note 4. I'm doing it this way just so Verizon can see the note was originally activated on the 2gb line (line that used the upgrade)

Well it's good to know someone else thinks this will work. Let's hope so! :fingers-crossed:

I've spoken to Verizon and they've confirmed this will work. I was tempted to just order thru Verizon so it would go smoothly but I couldn't pass up the $200 offer at best buy. Hopefully bestbuy doesn't give me a hard time. Worst case scenario I'll have them activate and leave the note 4 on the 2gb line and I'll swap it myself when I get home. Hopefully my note will be available this week, I'll let you know how it goes.

I ordered mine through Verizon. I traded in my old Samsung Nexus that has been sitting in a drawer every since I got the S3. I got $12 for that so I will get $188 back through the Samsung rebate. The plus side of going through Best Buy is you get it right then as opposed to having to wait. But since Best Buy is 30 miles away from me I figure I make out by not spending gas money
I'm glad to hear VZW told you this would work though. Hopefully if I run into problems doing it myself online I'll be able to call and have them do it without any run-around.

You can do this no problem. You're able to swap devices at any time.
Agreed, the Sandman method will work fine. I move devices around between lines all the time. The new bit that is the problem is just to make sure you are paying data on the lines upgrades happen on, and you are, so all good...
Awesome
