Does the Loki hack result in lowered performance? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Just at the title says. I'm blown away by just how much faster my nexus 4 is then the gs4. I'm stumped.
Does the locked bootloader cause some performance drop?

Loki doesn't have anything to do with that. If anything I would suspect it's the modem file on your phone but I'm not an expert with the modems.

I was under the impression that modems only effected network speeds
Am I wrong?

Lol I was under the impression you were meaning network speeds. I guess I didn't read it clearly enough. But still no about loki, it won't decrease your performance.

Is your gs4 on stock touchwiz? Stock touchwiz is very inefficient when it comes to using the hardware's true potential. Custom touchwiz and aosp based ROMs make a very noticeable difference in speed; paired with a better kernel is even better. Samsung is notorious for locked bootloaders but that doesn't cause performance issues, it's the OS that does.

buttery smooth in what aspect? you are being very vague. I think you may be referring to the overall feel while navigating. Try downloading Task's AOKP, mess around with animations in his settings .

As in, everything opens faster and smoother. A significant amount faster. Not just purely animations.
Example. Open settings while phone is in landscape. (Home screen does not rotate). Numbers are purely for example
Nexus 4 | opens in .25 seconds, no stutter
Galaxy s4 | opens in .40 seconds, animation stutter obvious.
Make sense?

Best best might be to take some video so we can compare.
My S4 on GoldenEye opens Phone in vertical or landscape in well under .25 seconds, nearly instant.

Well the times were just for difference examples. But I will make a video side by side with my nexus 7 . Will post tonight

Scrolling speed seems slow...

I have been using nexus 4 since 2 days now. I am on stock no root. To me it feels as if t scrolling speed is not as smooth as I found it to b on other devices like s3, i5, note etc.
The speed seems slow whether I m scrolling t web pages or inside any app.
Anyone else feel t same....I think its a ROM thing. Kindly suggest for improving t same....
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Yeah same thing I thought the instance I got my n4...scrolling thru xda and pages was laggy...
So I rooted unlocked boot loader and flashed pa3.0 and that problem was fixed...
I still feel like scrolling on my s3 is a bit smoother

It's a ROM from moles. Located in the original development section. You would have to be rooted with unlocked boot loader first.

It's only the two of you.
Sorry.
But seriously, you'll probably not notice after a few weeks using the n4. I can't remember how my previous devices were anymore and just enjoy my n4 stock.
When I got my n4, first thing I noticed is that how fast it was compared to s3 and iphone 5 like.
But if your browser is chrome then I can understand the lag. Try any other browser. Can't be worse than chrome.
Lightning browser is the best one for the noobs.
In terms of apps everything is faster on this phone. You must be doing something wrong.
This is easily the fastest device I've ever used, and I'm just on a rooted stock ROM with a few colour tweaks.
I agree that t phone is much much faster but what I am experiencing is the lag or slow speed when I scroll let's say contacts, xda app, chrome etc. I hope you understand my problem....
And I feel that not everyone is experiencing the same issue.,..
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
My phone is the same way, and the touchscreen can be pretty unresponsive at times. I feel like there's a decent amount of occasional lag when I'm scrolling through home screens or opening the applications. Definitely could be faster, I'm considering an RMA.
I dont think its a hardware issue ....so need not worry bout RMA. Yupp but looking for a software enhancement ......

Is it me or is the s4 laggy compared to the note 2

I have used the phone for 2 days and it just seems more laggy than the note 2. The note 2 is crispy especially when switching between apps.

Yes. I have noticed this as well. Last weekend I purchased a HTC One, the reception was very poor compared to the Note 2, also seemed to have a bit of lag. I took it back immediately.
Then, I outright bought the Galaxy S4 and am debating taking it back because of the lag. I wonder if it has something to do with 1080 vs 720 screen resolution processing?

My best guess the is the s4 software was a rush job. They didn't expect to have to use the snapdragon 600 processor and so they didn't have time to fully optomize it the best they could. The soc is more than powerful enough. However, i think with in the the next month or so an update will completely clear that up. The same thing happened to the s3.

That is true, with an update it will help regulate the system a little better. I do too remember that with the SIII i didnt have it then but i knew a few people who did have it. The lag isnt BAD but i think to much runs in the background and sucks the ram up I feel as if i need a task killer for some of the background crap. Plus with the awesome dev selection coming here and once tweaks start cracking out im sure it will be all gone
What I did was install trickstermod, change the governor from on demand to interactive, up the read ahead from 256 to 1024, change scheduler to deadline, and turn off zram.. and this thing is running like butter. And I'm getting amazing battery life

I see two settings for the CPU Governor... You just changed the one under the General section correct. Or did you also change the Governor setting under the Specific sections as well?
EDIT: NVM the one under Specific section is for the GPU... misread it the first time I looked at the settings.
This seems odd to me. I had an S3 tweaked to optimal performance, and the S4 completely stock still blazes in comparison.
I don't have a single sliver of lag, I go from app to app in a heartbeat, and my roommate has a Note 2 as well and the S4 is still smoother.
Very weird, this is one beast of a phone haha. There is literally nothing better at the moment since it came out so early in the year!
I'm sure any issues you have will disappear in a second once kernel development gets going!

What do you consider to be "lag"? The S4 does lag. That's all there is to it. Not as much as my EVO LTE does but it still does. Especially compared to the HTC One. But I'd rather have a little lag as opposed to the negatives with HTC, Sense, and the One.

I'm sure you know all about my phone.
My phone doesn't stutter in the slightest, it does not ever freeze up even for a second, everything opens and close immediately, multi tasking works flawlessly, there is literally nothing on it that doesn't work flawlessly. It has a processor that's already excessively powerful for just a phone.
As other people have said, some people may be having lag solely due to software, and the consensus is that the latest firmware updates took care of the minor issues people were having. I've had an android phone from every generation starting with the G1 and I can say that my phone, the one in my hand, does not lag at all, while all others had plenty of lag decreasing exponentially through generations.
I am running AOSP though, and not the stock TW though and have been since it came out, so I can't give a respectable opinion on the current state of the stock rom.

Weird. I noticed lag on the display model at Sprint, on my brothers S4 right after he purchased his, and on mine right after purchasing my S4. My brother also claims his device doesn't lag the slightest bit but it clearly did while I was testing his out. Maybe some of us are super-human and can detect a higher FPS in the 'ol noggin. Lol. Who knows.

Is it a good idea to buy one?

I'm stuck with this or a S3.
Do you guys recommend me one Galaxy Nexus?

I had the galaxy nexus. It was okay but I definitely felt the old hardware in day to day performance. I would go for the nexus 4. It's pretty much future proof of 2 years or so. As for custom rom there are really good ones here.

I was mainly deciding between a Nexus 4 and a used S3 (since they can be had for 200$), I ended up getting a Nexus 4 from the carrier due to the monthly payment of 17$ for 24 months (basically for the 16GB model which I could have gotten direct from google for 350$, I'm paying bout ~60 interest for basically a loan when you think bout it).
Namely for two reasons.
1) It's nearly impossible to hard-brick, and just as easy to unlock (though an S3 wouldn't be that difficult either)
2) Google will continue to provide OS updates for it at the very least for the next 2 maybe 3 years if you want AOSP or any roms based on AOSP.
Reasons I considered the S3:
- Longer battery life (both phones have a 2100mAh battery, but the S3's battery can be user-replaced)
- Can be had decently lower price used (~200-250 since the S4 is out now)
- Has a microSD slot, so could pop in a 64GB micro-SD card
- higher megapixel user-side camera (1.9MP vs 1.3MP)
- will support USB-OTG (Nexus4 will not and it's not capable of it on the hardware level).
I'm somewhat new to the Nexus4 itself, but so far with the custom rom SlimBean I've had zero lag, and short of google wallet (probably rom related, I resolved it with titanium backup), I haven't had a problem yet.
to me nexus devices are the only ones that i have ever had where i don't need to use a custom rom its already stock and using custom ones generally add features which i for don't really use or want.
easy to root, and with a custom kernel its truly an amzaing device.
having said that if you want smooth, this is about as smooth as any other device out atm HOWEVER android is going to get a massive speed (and potentially battery) boost with the next android version due to changes in the UX rendering system and limiting draw calls.
so the nexus 4 can only get better imo.
but if you can hold out till novemeber maybe wait for the the new nexus and a hardware boost (and probably a 1080p screen)

Stock on Google devices are about as slimmed down as you can get of any stock devices, I know plenty of people who are happy with stock-rooted.
Custom roms can do a lot of things not just speed.

Photo Lag?

Hi
Does anyone have the problem of extreme choppyness and lag when zooming into a photo in the gallery and panning around?
It also seems to happen in quickpic too, and it's very strange indeed. Also quite embaressing when showing your mates a photo and its lagging like hell.
This isn't a problem on the HTC Evo 3d and One S, and tbh any other recent phone I've had. Seems to be Samsung specific and it has persisted on different roms. I'm currently stock 4.1.2 rooted.
Any suggestions? It seems ridiculous how Samsung have not corrected this.

Yeah I am sure it is Samsung/the rom. I've done nothing much at all on my rooted phone and this also occurs after a fresh non rooted wipe and also on the 4.1.1 rom. Rooted or unrooted, and fresh from a wipe.
This does not happen on my HTC ONE S or any other HTC Android phone I have had. Rooted or unrooted. The gallery app in general is laggy as hell too but I'll put that down to how many photos I have.
The lag I'm refering to is related to when you pan around a zoomed photo which was taken with the phone camera. And this also applies to non-stock gallery apps.
Will not be taking any responsibility here whatsoever and fully lay the blame at Samsung's door.
