Help! Touch buttons on Galaxy S4 are unresponsive! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Suddenly, the touch capacitive buttons "back", and "menu" became unresponsive. I have to press on them multiple times to get them to work. Sometimes I need to press around 10 times to get a response. Phone is in great condition. Wasn't dropped, no water, no issues whatsoever.
Any way to fix?
This "might" be a software issue too, because when I do finally get the buttons to respond, the phone reacts to several presses not just to one. Example: the back button will go back several screens when it finally responds.
Please note: Reboot does not help. Turning completely off and on, doesn't help either. Problem persists.

I have absolutely no idea if you are rooted or not, running a custom rom or on stock touchwiz. I've got nothing to go off of. If it's all stock, return it I guess.

Hey ibex333 I checked into your problem and I would advise going to a Best Buy Samsung Rep and ask them to reflash you firmware saying that your softkeys aren't working. If that doesn't work last chance is to call at&t and ask them to replace your phone saying hardware malfunction. Hope this helps.

I would only do those things as a last result unless you are on MF3 (OP never said). If on MDB or MDL, try a factory reset first or try re-installing the stock MDL firmware through ODIN and then try a factory reset. If it's a hardware issue, the problem will persist and you might not have an option except warranty repair.
If you are already on MF3, then it is OK to try Best Buy or warranty fix / exchange to begin with.

If it's on MF3 lets suppose isn't rooted, a factory reset wouldn't help or what could happen ?

it's the display conector ...had the same problem ...it started with the display going almost black ...i deconcted the display, put it back then the display was going but the capacitive buttons not ...did the same for about 3 times and they get on ...i think some pins didn't made contact well

Screen won't respond when trying to unlock

I just came back to my phone to unlock it, but it wouldn't accept any touch input. I don't think the device had totally locked up, as i could see the signal bars going up and down - plus the physical buttons worked fine.
Has anyone else had this issue? It's getting annoying having to take the back cover off to soft reset more and more frequently!
(I haven't applied any kind of lock screen tweaks btw)
Using the stock T-Mobile UK ROM (1.43)
Thanks

Sorry but my T-Mobile supplied HD2 (on same ROM) has never shown this issue. All OK here. Did the power off (batt out) and reset fix the problem?

I just hit the reset button and it fixed it
Not the first time i've had to reset due to a strange lockup.
Might have to slap a new ROM on soon i think!
Seems to be struggling to get 3G reception (even in areas where my TyTn II was fine) grr!
ive had the phone for about 3 weeks, and used about 3 roms...
i experienced this probelem with the stock rom, and i still do sometiems with custom roms, but not as much as stock.
u should try a custom rom..helps alot.
I've posted about this problem before - it's possible your device is subject to heat problems. Mine did exactly the same thing when it got warm (either in the sun or while charging). Had to put it in the freezer a few times to get the touchscreen to respond again. And the phone worked as if nothing had happened.
Next time it happens, check the temperature of the back of the phone. If it's warm to hot - put it in a plastic bag and into the freezer for a minute or two to cool down, then try again.
I had your problem too many times even after trying cooked ROMs and upgrades/tweaks/hard resets so has gone back for replacement...

went through this for a week. flashed to 5 different ROMS all doing task 29 before I did so and used recommended radios for each build. also did MTTY.
nothing helped.
my only option was to send my phone in to Tmobile for a warranty replacement. so far my replacement is working fine on a cooked rom

Argh! The screen is no longer responsive. What to do?

Just as i said - Argh! The screen is no longer responsive. What to do? I can no longer slide the lock across the screen. i have tried to flash the ROM with the 1.66 official but i cannot because it tells me to unlock the phone. I cant! argh! I've pushed the little red button by the battery a couple of times as well as removed the battery. Any suggestions? The hard buttons allow me to answer a call but that's it. i recently turned on the lock for the phone (today in fact) but I've unlocked it several times since doing so before this happened.
Sounds familiar...
Sounds like it is the same problem I had, as well as a few others on this forum. Even after a hard reset, it still didn't work. According to other people here, the solution is to have the screen swopped out for a new one. I've actually just sent mine in today to get it sorted out.
Just curious - I've got a suspicion that environmental conditions may have a role to play in causing the failure. What is the weather in your area like?
Very nice here today. Sunny, mid 50s(f).
I bought this off of ebay. Do i just send it in to HTC?
Try a hard reset, and if it doesn't help then make sure you have an official ROM and send it to HTC.
a hard reset is the little red button next to the battery, correct? ive done that.
and i cant very well change the ROMs at this point now, can i?

I would really like to wipe it before i sent it in. i dont want all my info, etc going into someones hands i dont know. anyway to do that?
No, that's a soft reset. Hard reset is pressing the red button while holding both volume keys until you get the "Restore factory settings?" prompt (when the device is on), then following the onsceeen instructions. This is what you're looking for to erase everything, including any possible software bug that could have caused the issue.
If the touchscreen still doesn't work then, send it in.

No! A hard reset is:
- Turn phone off
- Press vol up and down at the same time and then press power button (hold vol)
- follow the instructions on the screen
Be aware, that all you data on the phone will get lost. I recommend taking out the SD for that as well. After that u r done. By what you say i assume, that you didnt flash a custom ROM yet, right ?
Thanks! that didnt work either though.
I just want my money back now honestly. This thing, as pretty as it is, is just too much trouble.
Sorry double post...
A faulty device can happen to anybody, just bad luck... can't count how many times it has happened to me as well in the past.
I heard that there is a batch of phones that have a faulty screen, other problems are that without pressing anything the phone still registers clicks, phone doesn't always detect the correct place of where you pressed and the screen not responding.
I have got this on my phone and have arranged a pick up from HTC to pick up my phone for repair, hopefully in a week or two it will come back with a brand new screen that works
Ive had it a couple of months now. Im not sure if i can deal with the lack of apps that my iPhone has, pandora and the like, and the fact that teh HD2 would every so often change time and even date and i cant get weather in places my iPhone can.
In short, i love the HD2 for its specs but i no longer trust it at all.

Return button not working/off

I just got my phone back from Samsung and they replaced the board due to bad internal SD....now..this new phone is working great....BUT
The return button (right of main physical button) turns off and doesnt want to work.
It seems like it gets stuck as pressing the main home button will take a screen shot.
Is this a known issue?
It stops working...then a few min. later it works again for a bit. Rebooting doesnt help it. You just have to wait it out.
Any way to calibrate it?
Send it back to samsung?
My currently dead i9000M did this. Usually only when you pressed Home and Return really quickly.

Really? WTF!
I thought it was just my phone...and this phone just came back from repair!
I just called samsung and told them about the issue. They told me to call the repair shop in Montreal tomorrow and tell them about it as they need to close off my old ticket so a new ticket can be reopened.
WTF..they dont do extensive testing of the phone before shipping it out to customers!
I get the same as well. When running the authorized Bell/Samsung ROM's (JK3, JK4 and JL4) I see it quite often.
Now that I am using a custom ROM based on JPY, it occurs less frequently. I can't seem to duplicate the steps it takes for the issue to arise.
As @rmanaudio mentioned, once this occurs and you press the "Home" button, a screenshot is taken.
I'd be interested to know if the new device that you receive has this issue fixed.
is this the problem that occurs for you in this thread?

Let me know if this fixes the issue for you too,
I had the same issue and after doing this I haven't seen the problem in a number of days.
This may or may not work, I have found this menu on my own and don't know if it will solve anything

Touchscreen does not work

hello, recently my phone's touchscreen does not work. Only when I initially turn it on, it will work until I turn off the screen or if someone calls, I am able to answer then the touchscreen works. Other than that, if I power on the screen, I cannot unlock it at all. I am currently using NAND version of Android on my phone and it have been perfectly fine for weeks. Does anyone have any clue? I have already tried to load a different version of the rom but still the same problem is occurring.
Could be a hardware problem. Send it back for repair.

Sent from my HTC HD2 using Tapatalk
Try turning on your screen with the other buttons beside the red end call one.
This happened to me, however, eventually, it stopped working whenever i pressed any of the other buttons to turn on the screen for touch to work also, so it's best to send it for repair while you still can.
For all of you having issues with screen freeze, here is my take. (Before I waste any of your time, I just want to say that I finally had to send it to HTC for repair) This is NOT a software issue but a hardware issue.
I have been flashing roms ever since HTC 8225 came out. I don't want to sound like an expert, but I am an above average user.
I have been using my HD2 for over a year. Then the screen started freezing out of the blue after it locks. Then I had to reboot it and it worked as long as it didn't lock.
Then I figures out that it started working when i awoke the phone by pressing the "BACK" button. So I kept doing that for a while till that stopped working. Then I figures out that if I tilt the phone sideways, almost like changing the screen to landscape, brought it back to upright position, and pressed the back button, it unlocked. However, this also stopped working after few days.
(I also tried to flash many different roms to make sure that this is not a software problem)
Finally the touchscreen stopped working altogether.
Then I called HTC to see if I was still under warranty. I thought I was way past the warranty period but HTC said that I was under the warranty. So I send in the phone for repair and it is on the way back from repair. I didn’t have to pay anything since it was still under warranty.
If your phone is under warranty, send it in for repair as soon as possible. Even if it works for a little while, it needs to be fixed.
I just wrote what I have learned by trying different things. When I flashed factory roms and the screen is totally unresponsive, I concluded that it is a hardware issue.
If you know better, share it with the community!
Thanks for the response everyone.
I have tried to turn on the phone using any other button but the red button and it works. But as most of you already experienced, it will probably get worse. I don't think my phone is under warrantee anymore so is there a repair kit for this?
I have worked on a handful of HTC phones but the HD2 is different. You need to use a soldering iron to remove the touch screen connection. I personally don’t like to deal with stuff like that! As far as a kit, I am not sure. There are videos on youtune which can walk you through changing the screen. Then again, I am not sure what needs to be changed. Is it the screen? Is it the digitizer or something else? Keep searching... Good Luck!
digitizer broken, send the HD2 for repair
Obviously, if you phone still falls into warranty period, reflash original stock WM
good luck

My soft buttons just suddenly stop working, can't seem to fix them.

What I have tried so far:
Restarting the phone.
Removing the battery.
clearing the cache.
factory resetting it.
using the *#2663# trick
(the phone's touch key FW is0x0e)
(the part's touch key FW is 0x00)
about to try:
flashing a fresh new base ROM.
I don't think this was a hardware problem because it just died when I was in the middle of using it. Any suggestions anyone?
Currently on an android 4.4.4
Anyone?
It sounds like you've tried everything that can be done software-wise. I think it's service centre time.

This.
If you already flashed a stock rom without getting them working, seems like a hardware problem for me. Flash a stock rom and take it to any Samsung Service Centre. Good luck with that!

I kind of don't think it is, because I just managed to press the back button and both the back and the recent apps button lit up and worked for a whole 2 seconds. they were still lit even when they stopped working, until I placed the phone to sleep.
And flashing it does not work (although I have that DM-verify problem)
P.S. this phone might be partially rooted, any way to fix that?

The fact that they intermittently work doesn't mean there isn't a hardware issue.
You should flash a stock ROM which will remove root and send it back to service.
Time for some on-screen buttons! ?
