Pink gradient on screen

I'm reviewing the Galaxy S4 and have found an issue with my S4 which I'd like to confirm with other owners.
When looking at a completely white screen and especially on lower brightness settings I have a pink gradient at the bottom part of the screen. Here's a picture: http://i.imgur.com/9jhVEnr.jpg
Normally I'd just swap it, but before doing so and knowing how AMOLED screens usually have weird behaviors I'd like to see if anyone is suffering the same issue. I managed to get a screenshot of a YouTube review which seemed to show the same problem: http://i.imgur.com/DhryGwg.png
Anyone else? Is it normal?

no its not normal better to replace the handset

I got my UK vodafone S4 yesterday, and I've noticed the pink tint at the bottom of my screen as well. It's not as noticeable as the OP's, but noticeable none the less.
I let vodafone know this evening, and they'll send me out a replacement when they have stock back in; I'm happy to keep using the handset until then. If you're within your grace period from an upgrade, and have this problem, I recommend letting the provider know about it!

Again man? Same problem with the S3 really tired of samsung Amoleds problems...every single year there is some gradients, black inks and not black blacks...

Just checked and mine doesn't do it, Send it back.

Actually, after looking at it on my laptop it probably is about the same level as Spybreak's (was viewing on my S4 screen originally :laugh.
You can tell it's not a software thing, because if I move the phone with white webpage displayed into horizontal view, the pink tint is at the right side of the browser (bottom of the phone screen).

I finally replaced mine and the new one has no pink tint. So yeah, looks like its just some faulty units

Just realised tonight, while using the phone in bed and rebooting, that the screen has the red pixel on blacks problem as well. Bloody hell Samsung...
Replacement handset screen will be thoroughly tested as soon as I get it!

On a black and background in a pitch black room on low brightness does the black not have a slight pink tint to it? Mine does not sure if I should replace

I don't think so because screen is hardware if software problem then whole screen have pink tint
it is a hardware if you having go and replace it:thumbup:

Damn I have the pink tint at the bottom as well.
I bought it new, without a subscription or anything.
I hope the web-shop will replace it, without having to send it for repair. Because I don't want to wait 3 weeks

This issue plagued my S3 experience (multiple replacements with various degrees of pink and purple gradients). Based on this and other complaints I've been following, I think I may pass on this phone and pick up AMOLED once it has been further developed.

I had slight pink issue on SGS3 (screen bottom and random areas upper) but now I have gradient on top of the display and to go down the tint is dissapearing to about 1/3 of the display. But its not only the white colour which is pinkish on the top third also other colours are shifter from upper side to downside - very annoying I can see it all the time especially on low brightness...
edit: just want to upload some of the photos (only resized, untouched)

I dug up an old SIII pic (not very good, but I have better quality shots somewhere...) and it looks a bit similar to the tint issue with the S4. I wonder what causes this during the manufacturing process?

I have pink gradient at the top of my black s4 too...

Is the pink tint firmware or hardware?

I've got a stupid pink tint at the very bottom of the screen and I've had 2 exchanges of the HTC One before exchanging for the GS4 and the network find it hard to believe I've had 3 faulty devices in a row and wont exchange it. Anyways I canceled my direct debit and told my bank not to allow anything from them until they sort it but It's just bloody annoying.

Can't say whether it is h/w or s/w - I know mine doesn't seem to have it ... or it's not obvious enough if it has
But I would recommend not cancelling the DD as it will probably have consequences on your credit rating. Phone companies don't care about you cancelling it as they will get their £££

Does yours have ghosting? When I scroll up and down in menus I notice like the blue bars on the edges of them it changes to a darker colour, you can see it struggling to keep up, even see the old text through the blue bars.

It's commonly known as screen smearing, and we have a workaround for that

My GNex had the pink, and my S4 whilst not pink had a noticeable difference between the top and bottom of the screen. Darker at the top than the bottom.
Had it exchanged yesterday... new device is perfect, just waiting for Samsung to sort the laggy TouchWiz out.

Yeh they wont exchange mine saying I've had too many....... stop sending me faulty phones then.
Anyways wont pay them anything until they sort it.

Just noticed the purplish smearing on dark menus,
Also pinkish blue when popping in and out of the keyboard

I have the same thing, pink tint at the bottom when viewing under lighter backgrounds, it's pretty bad, gonna take it back to my carrier and try to get it exchanged.

Thanks for the response sir. Yes, I've checked your fix methods, tried the first two, but none of them worked. I think I don't have any smearing issue, rather I've a pink tint at the bottom of my screen. So, the upper 3/4 part of the screen is bright, and lower 1/4 part is dark (pink/purple tint). It seems, its a hardware issue, tho i'm running dead pixels app (from play store), which says, it will take 30mins. It is still running, but I guess replacing phone seems to be the only option.

Yeah, thanks for that. I even flashed latest Russian LP rom just to confirm it wasn't some software issue, but even on this ROM, I'm having pink tint at bottom which looks very bad. Anyway, will take my phone to repair center tomorrow, hope they see it clearly, and replace my phone

How many people have this screen problem?

If you put the phone on lower brightness or auto-brightness, do you see faint vertical and horizontal "streaks" of discoloration or shading? It's especially apparent in the dark, and on grey backgrounds. My phone has this exact problem, and I tried taking it to a Verizon store to exchange it and they refused, because the two S4's on display had similar issues (although less apparent). So either this is a very common problem on the S4 or I'm just incredibly unlucky. Would like to hear from other Galaxy S4 owners to see how widespread this really is.

My issue isn't smearing, it's permanent, faint vertical and horizontal streaks or lines.

Strange, my S4 doesn't has.. But my old GNexus had vertical lines visible only with white or green background.
I think is lucky.. If you can, change it or ask to technical assistance Samsung for display change..

I didn't get a 1-1. Went to the service centre. First time it was an issue with the sound crackling but somehow they changed the screen when they shouldn't (and I still hate them for it).
The replaced screen had a greenish blotch in the middle, so back it went.
Third had two dead pixels so I sent it back.
Fourth they replaced on the spot for it had a big piece of dust inside the screen.
Fifth has a small speck of dust under the screen which they refused to change for me in the end.
Still quite a bummer that five screens later I still ended up with a less-than-perfect screen. But I just gave up and it doesn't affect me too much nowadays.

That's unfortunate. I haven't experience that on mine and hopefully never will. Possibly just a faulty device.

Yup, I have this issue too on my international S4 (GT-I9500). This only happens with grey. The screen tests for red, green and blue are perfect. And they're only usually visible in the dark. Best way to show them the problem is to search 'solid grey' on Google Images, save one of them and show them the image on full screen in the dark. After seeing that, it'll be pretty much impossible to deny that it is a problem. I took it to service and got a screen replacement under warranty, but it didn't help. Still has those stupid lines. Most apparent in the dark on solid gray. I'm taking it back to the store on Monday, if they replace the handset and that fixes it, I'll get back to you.

I think this is another variant of the smudges that are apparent in amoled screens sometimes. Search Google for lines in amoled displays or something similar. There's loads of threads talking about the same thing.
At any rate, it seems to just be luck of the draw as to how bad it is, or if you even get it at all.
At least, if you have them, they don't worsen over time, and any phones that are made with amoled screens can get them. I have two lines myself. I've just gotten used to it really. Don't see them now, unless I look hard for them.

Top half of screen is dark

Hi all
I just bought a S4, and I noticed I had the purple smearing issue. I have now updated to the latest BMF8 rom which really solved the problem. But now I notice one issue, when I display a pure white background or a Grey background, I notice the top half of the screen is darker (pink tint) than the lower part which id yellowish...
it is the same no matter what screen brightness I set.. the top half is darker than the bottom... is anyone having this issue? my S3 does not have this problem...

looking at my screen shots, they dont show when viewing on a monitor, so it is the LCD screen of the phone which is faulty...

Are you talking about a slight whitish tone on the top diaognal half of your screen and the lower half has this pinkish or purplelish tone on white or bage bg? Try taking a picture maybe?

I have updated the first post with screen shots. I dont know if you can see it but as I said, the whole top half is darker thsn the lower half.

I have just been to the Samsung kiosk in my home town... showed the phone to one of the reps and he confirmed the screen was darker on the top half... hopefully this gets changed tomorrow when I go to the phone shop...

yess...i had it too..i think it's just software problems n will be fixed soon with software updates...my s4 is international version i9500 N XUBMEA baseband

To me it looks like a hardware issue because when I make a screen grab and view the image on my S3 and computer, the captured images look ok ..
Im waiting for a replacement phone anyway.

No i meant top and bottom are the same... no tint

I think all GS4 phones have a slight purple tint issue, it's just the way the display is built.

If its in black also then its not gonna be good.. u should give to service for change ur device or c

I'm hoping Samsung comes out with a fix for the pink tint.
I seem to recall that the s2 had issues with yellow tint on the left side and Samsung came out with a kernel update that fixed it.

I had same problem what @nm8 had. I sent my phone to warranty but only thing they did was a software update (what I did three times before sending it to there). Of course that didn't help, after I got my phone back it was even worse. I wrote petition to the shop from where I bought phone. Yesterday they announced to me that Samsung after-sales service will buy my phone back.
Right now I don't know that is this phone worth of buying again (would buy 32 GB version now). It's one of the most expensive phones in the market so I would like to get nearly perfect screen...

There is no perfect screen.. better to stop trying to get unless u loss ur hope and waiste ur timer..

So i noticed about a week ago when I bring up a black or grey background there was a red smudge in the pixels about two inches long. Finally got around to contacting Asus and i have to send it in now.
Just curious, does anyone else have this?
you can see it next to storage and battery

I do, only noticeable when the screen is all black.. Never really bothered me..

I don't remember where, but I've seen something similar to this on another device. I'm guessing there's electronics pressed against the screen in those areas, creating an effect sort of like when you push on an LCD screen with your finger.
